When I was younger I never had a problem with starting. Being consistent and finishing however, was a different story. I made a list of all the thing I haven't completed and working on them. It feels amazing and actually quite addictive.

I just started crying half way through this...I have a 8-month old, I used to be so fit and do yoga every day. I feel so weak now, exhausted every second...I find it hard to imagine getting back into a fitness routine. It was so helpful for my mental health disorder. You're video reminded me of that feeling of starting out and also gave me some hope that no matter how long it takes, I can always get back into it. thank you

This is such a powerful statement: "Being free of self-judgment made this thing a whole lot easier, and a lot more enjoyable as well." Thank you for making this video and sharing it with us. It's very inspiring and makes me want to give yoga another go. I always gave up too soon (too difficult, too stiff, can't do this, and all that BS that I catch myself saying all day). It's time to just start doing a routine and not beat myself up about it because it's not perfect. Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm going for 1% improvement at a time and enjoying the journey instead of focusing on only the destination. 🙏

It's very important that you start with asanas and videos for beginners that you can do. With a slow practice the joy comes from itself and with every move it can be the best thing. Wish you all the best! 😊

    • @hycicle
      @hycicle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Love your comment. The key is in enjoying the process. Forget about how we do compared to others, or even compared to when we were younger and fitter. Just have fun! When you have fun and keep going, improvement is a natural by-product. This applies to everything and not just yoga. Hope you're having alot of fun in everything you do :)

It’s so inspiring to see that you have progressed alone in ashtanga yoga, one of the most difficult styles of yoga. When I open a video for beginners in ashtanga it’s always written “Attention, practice this sequence with a experienced teacher “. But not all of us can go directly to a school. So I think that you are so brave girl!

No one talks about the physical pain in the beginning. It hurts so bad. When I started, I would mostly just lay there cause even that hurt. But,,, determination won! I wanted to be healthy again, and a few short days later, I started feeling better it showed in my body and on and off my mat. Keep going it gets better

I also stopped yoga after my daughter was born and I am now getting back to it 5 years later. I am enjoying the journey but I still have a long way to go before I feel I am improving. I suffer from depression and did yoga quite religiously during spring/first few months of summer last year, and honestly felt great despite being very stiff/weak but things ended up catching up with me. I had several big dips and I couldn't force myself to find the will to do it again. But this video made me remember how good it felt and how great it was for me. I might try to do 100 Days challenge too, thank you so much for the reminder that sometimes you just need to show up.

    • @hycicle

Couple months after this video was posted I lost my mother. I spent the last 5 months of her life by her side 24x7 and 12 days before she passed away I had to leave and missed her passing. I have not been practicing like I did in this video ever since. For a while I fought against it and felt bad about it. But I realized by doing that I am turning something wonderful into another shackle, so I decided to honor where I was in life and just do my best. I do shorter and easier practices now and less consistently, as the focus of my life shifted so did my practice. I hope you too can find peace with what is while you continue to do your best and love yourself.

This was so insightful and beautiful. It really hit home in a lot of ways for me. I’ve had this vision of myself for the majority of my life that I haven’t been actualizing because I’m not the dancer I used to be, or I have old car accident junk. But I know that if I just showed up and practiced consistently, a lot of my chronic pain would probably dissipate.
One of the biggest challenges I have is breaking all the way through to the other side without self-sabotaging. I beat myself down before I’ve truly begun and then I beat myself up for quitting. It’s become a viscous cycle that I know I’m going to have to overcome if I want real progress in my life.
So thank you for the reminders of the little things and that half the practice really is just showing up for yourself. Also, thank you for your candor.
I wish you lots of success with your TH-cam channel. You have a new subscriber here. ❤️

I am so happy to know that this video helped in some way. We are our harshest critics. I suffered a lot from self-judgment and self-sabotage in many areas of life. Looking back I hurt myself and people closest to me. But life is a school and we are here to learn. We are all fellow students and we can always share notes with each other. And this is what this channel is about!

Hi! I stumbled on your video last night and it really spoke to me. I used to love yoga, though I never managed to hold a daily practice for very long, but still, I always came back to it and enjoyed it so much. But like you, having kids brought an end to many elements of my previous life and when I needed yoga most I stopped practising. Your message is so motivating because I share your inhibitions about getting back to yoga, and I really appreciate you showing how hard it was yet you continued. One thing that differs is I realised I have not been visualising my ideal self any more, even in my fantasies I stopped seeing myself as fit, strong, motivated, disciplined, and the kind of person who prioritises what is good and right for them and believes in themself. Ouch! Anyway, that was the most powerful take away for me and something I am going to consciously work on now. So, THANK YOU for this video and for sharing, you have really struck a chord with me and I’m very grateful for that wake-up call. 😊
P.S. I got up early this morning to do yoga

I watched this video in September 2021 as I was convincing myself to begin a daily yoga practice and show up for that first studio class. Been going 4 times a week and trying to do at least 10 minutes at home on the other 3 days for about 8 months now. It is really uncomfortable in the beginning, to feel lost and just plain ole bad at it. I felt so self conscious and almost quit, but I met some awesome women who are in their 60s and 70s and have been practicing longer than I've been alive, and that inspired me to keep showing up. I recently told one of my favorite yoga teachers, "Thank you, you've helped me fall in love with yoga." and she said, "Yoga has fallen in love with you."

I probably have 10 minutes worth of footage where I tried awkwardly to say hello, because it actually feels really weird talking into a phone / camera. I'm learning that nonjudgment, a fous on the current action rather than the outcome, and alignment with my highest self are keys to self-improvement and discipline. I did Laruga's Ashtanga video today and was wobbling, pausing and catching my breath while watching the poses I can't do right now. How you looked when you started was me this afternoon. I felt energized and inspired but a part of me was frustrated with myself for not pushing harder, for stopping and whining at certain points in the video. What you shared on this video a year ago was exactly what I needed to hear right in this moment. I remembered that I showed up today on my mat and I can show up again tomorrow and the day after, and the day after. That's what matters. Thank you for sharing your journey. 💜

2 years ago, i started doing yoga at home solo from one of my nan's yoga books. I made some good progress
then i had a relapse with my health, i cant remember why or to what degree, but i have a long history of self-sabotage, which is kinda key as to why i became bedbound in the first place nearly ten years ago aged 31.
I can now drive short distances, ready to actually join a class cognitively and mentally, but because ive hurt a knee ligament, ive not even been doing my daily walks last 3 months and i never did get back into yoga. This time, im going to goto my local leisure centre and do yoga classes and hopefully i'll make some mates there too!
I've previously found it difficult to push through perfectionism and physical pain/stiffness, yoga, walking and horse riding have been the only activities ive done voluntarily and kept up for more than 3 months, ive learned to go slow and not push my body too fast too soon, so i have minimal lactic acid and thus minimal resistence to continuing over the years

I have to agree with @Ishbelable, visualization (and positive, hopeful thinking) is KEY to a dedicated yoga practice that last for life. Along with great intstructors. Good for you, The Yanza Bird...your changes are internal, as well as external, calm (Zen), The Yanza Bird, strong, positive, beautiful and confident. That is what Ashtanga Yoga is all about..namaste!
