If I were the pilot I'd go on the intercom and go 'Sorry about the hard landing folks. Good news is this city has some of the best chiropractors in the nation so if your spine went through the seat like mine did, we can carpool to the nearest doctor's office but I call shotgun.'
Every time our flight lands on 25R, its very bumpy. I was on a US Airways flight from Oakland. Pilot landed halfway down that runway before slamming it in the runway. Scariest landing of my life and my dads a pilot. So happy to get off that plane!
that comment about the spoilers going all the way up then splitting at 8:22...LOL....I think the spoilers got scared....LOL....this is such a cool video...
yeah and the 14's are almost bursting are you into the minos or the carters? i am more into the carters because they land alot softer on the 30 footers but i can go with a mino on 80 footer. i agree with what youre saying though man.
June 23, 2009: I arrived in Phoenix around noon, the temp was a scorching-hot 110 degrees. We didn't have a sink issue; instead, we had a major crosswind right before touchdown. Direct from left, the A320 was blown over hard, the pilot kicked in full rudder but the right main touched down in the dirt. Looking as straight-down as possible, there was zero runway to be seen, just dirt. We eventually crept back over, taking out a few lights in the process.
Being a resident of Phoenix and flying in frequently, I did think that your approach into PHX was a little high and he tried to compensate. Glad you made it in one piece.
Backseat pilot right here. It's actually frowned upon to practice landings under -100 fpm. Mainly due to the fact that it's obviously better to set it down rather than going for a greaser. -200fpm is still a good landing lol
Amazing. You tube posters never fails me. There always seem so many "experts" with a few "adults" . Hey guys, unless you are rated in this airplane, you are only guessing. Have a nice day folks.
@trollydodger the word 'barometric' should ring a bell. A barometric altimeter depends on air pressure which changes throughout the day/week/year, hence you need to set the right pressure setting in the Kollman's window to get the right altitude. A radio altimeter sends out a signal to the ground that bounces back to the aircraft indicating precise height above the surface. This is independent of the pressure outside and independent of the pressure setting in the Kollman's window as well.
I always thought 25R was closed to landings until recently I was listening to ATIS and 25R was the only runway open but it was around 2a. With no type of instrument aid 25R becomes visual or RNAV so its not as easy to land on as 25L & 26 can be. Im guessing its open around noon sometimes as well. Great ViD!
@TroubledTeTeman It uses the barometric altimeter which sends out signals to the ground and they bounce back to the aircraft. This determines the height AGL. It shows up on the bottom of the PFD just under the artificial horizon. To determine the right altitude, the barometric altimeter must be set to the correct atmospheric pressure.
Nice video. The inserted vid comments are helpful to an amateur like me. Even the flight attendant seemed a bit flustered after that one. Can they "catch flak" for making comments like she did during the roll-out? She was humorous, for sure.
Meaning, there could have been some wind shear or CAT painting on their radarscopes. Positive contact with the ground is eminently desirable in such instances.
My uncle is a captain for British Airways and said that a lot of hard landings without a flare are due to the GPWS being at the incorrect pressure setting, as it does use the barometric altimeter, which results in the GPWS calling out e.g. "30", just before you touch down, making you think your higher than you actually are, making you not flare in time, slamming the nosegear and maingear into the runway at the same time. This fault is down the the pilots or the atc giving them the wrong pressure
well i remember seeing the ground coming at me about 4 times the speed this one. i'm a bit of an airplane nerd so i could tell that didn't look right. i was just looking out of the window. not even looking back at the horiz. stabiliser. i looked at the shadow of the plane and it was speeding towards us! i'm pretty sure the pilots were flaring though.
i'm a Australian and we were flying from Tucson from san diago the plane was wobbling around everywhere and was very hard landing the first thing the cabin crew said was "well.. were here.."
once i was onboard on landing at heathow on a a340 or 747 i forgot. i saw the ground coming to me way faster than usural so i acturally did the brace position. and guess what? the ground effect came and the plane (not the pilots) made the softest landing i have ever experienced. lol
True but I don't think that there was sand on the runway because you can hear the thrust-reversers on very high which wouldn't be o n that high there was sand because of sand ingestion into the engine.
After watching numerous episodes of Mayday, I just hope that the Captain noted this landing in the logbook. Maintenance needs to check the landing gear after such a hard landing.
He did flair you can't forget to flair that would break the front landing gear. It is generally only a couple of degrees of nose up attitude its not like you think it is. Also its not easy to land a an airliner and there could have been factors you don't know about ex. fuel imbalance crosswind or the parking gate was close to the beginning of the runway so he wanted to get it down and stop it so there was a short taxi.
This is like Korean Air Lines Boeing 737-800 bound for Ulsan. The pilot seem to slam the plane purposely. At least you guys had a flight attendant that humored you a bit. Our KAL Flight was so gloomy.
Andrew Kim I see. The domestic ones are the worst. Very fast landing and then a sudden brake. The only KAL flight which never sucked was the Incheon to Manila flight on the Boeing 747-400. The passengers were clapping for the smooth flight. On their Boeing 737s, everyone was screaming.
Same thing when I was on Korean air Hk to Incheon. The pilot just seemed to want to speed the plane by slamming it hard on the runway and get off work asap.
....relevant data. that landing looked a little harder than the average crunch but still nothing to wet your diaper over. they're not all going to be greasers but keep in mind that comfort doesn't equal safe. the opposite is often true.
Wow, nice to see that the "big boys" do'em, too! I made one of those, in a two-seat, carbon fiber airplane, at Lake Tahoe. Check the video out at my channel...
pilots don't forget to flare. And the aircraft did not stall rather it could have been a hard landing for many reasons such as a downdraft, or coming in a bit fast or high and having to make adjustments to land on the runway just right and not float down the runway and risk running out of runway.
keep in mind that the plot that spends time pumping the yoke for a greaser is also usually flying over a lot of runway. on speed, on slope, on centerline, with a touchdown at ref + zero (not stalled holy crap) at the 1000 mark. all that plus a perfect round-out to a smooth landing is rare in the best conditions even with a radar altimeter. get the weight on the wheels asap so the pax can live to bitch about it on TH-cam. you must be chuck yeager to critique a guy from row 30 without all the re
Jeez, I think someone owes that runway an apology.
Lol
1949crewchief boy he slammed the plane down
@@CJetsPlanespotting gkap
That's that B738(or 9) boys.... beautiful plane. On that note, early maintenance here we come...
What a sweetheart of a flight attendant! Pleasant employees sure make things better!
You gotta luv the annoucement, 'well, we're here', LOL
"Well we are here" HAHAHAHAHAHA
Lol i know XD
well, dayum, that WAS a hard landing! Good vid, dude, and I liked the notes you put in on the vid, as well.
Gotta love the kids laughing in the background! lol
Love the laughing kids 😁 you could hit the water with everyone screaming and they'd be laughing 😁😁
If I were the pilot I'd go on the intercom and go 'Sorry about the hard landing folks. Good news is this city has some of the best chiropractors in the nation so if your spine went through the seat like mine did, we can carpool to the nearest doctor's office but I call shotgun.'
+The Red Viper i"m dead that was funny
Your not an airline pilot i can tell from that comment..
Naltron he said If I was a pilot

@drewax11 I 100% agree. (what airline do you fly for)

Thank you for flying Alaska Airlines.
How could you see the PAPI lights?
@khalilovH where did you learn that?
You walked out of that plane with some great footage! Thanks for sharing this one.
Being a resident of Phoenix and flying in frequently, I did think that your approach into PHX was a little high and he tried to compensate. Glad you made it in one piece.
@nathanthepilot What does the co-pilot have to do with a hard landing? Captain's don't have hard landings?
@Coaljet What flare, it was just driven on.
When does the "hard landing" start.
Backseat pilot right here. It's actually frowned upon to practice landings under -100 fpm. Mainly due to the fact that it's obviously better to set it down rather than going for a greaser. -200fpm is still a good landing lol

Aren't you supposed to turn off all electronic devices during takeoff and landing?
Nice vid! I have never seen the spoilers do that on a 737 before. They went al the way up,then they split at 8:22. Huh, wierd.

hahahahahha, i think my bags fell off the plane XD
EPIC!!!!!!
did you fly over gilbert?
Nice video. The inserted vid comments are helpful to an amateur like me. Even the flight attendant seemed a bit flustered after that one. Can they "catch flak" for making comments like she did during the roll-out? She was humorous, for sure.
Hi thanks for that video, Iha a landing similar to this in Chicago. That is scary when they do this. Thanks again.
How can you guess the vertical speed from the back of the plane? LOL
great narration. Nice video.
@khalilovH ??? Is that right?
Meaning, there could have been some wind shear or CAT painting on their radarscopes. Positive contact with the ground is eminently desirable in such instances.
@superman797
I didn't knew that it was a type rating... It seems like a flight...
Flaring: aint nobody got time for that!
A good landing is one you can walk away from. A great landing is one where you can reuse the plane afterwards.
"well, we are here" lol
IS THIS IN AZ CUZ I LIVE IN AZ!
They must have been wishing for a full mechanical inspection prior to the next flight.
That was a hard landing, but it was a good landing. Remember, a good landing is one that you could walk away from

I love arriving in Sky Harbor from the Northwest.
well i remember seeing the ground coming at me about 4 times the speed this one. i'm a bit of an airplane nerd so i could tell that didn't look right. i was just looking out of the window. not even looking back at the horiz. stabiliser. i looked at the shadow of the plane and it was speeding towards us! i'm pretty sure the pilots were flaring though.
"Too high, Too high" NOPE, NOT TODAY!!! (dives)
Your in Phoenix most likely went though a micro burst. Or a thermal on the threshold of the runway and the pilot tried to compensate
@corkaviation what do you mean by that?!
That flight attendant really likes her job!
Just love the flight attendant comment. :D
uhhhh, desert in alaska?
i'm a Australian and we were flying from Tucson from san diago the plane was wobbling around everywhere and was very hard landing the first thing the cabin crew said was "well.. were here.."
did the landing hurt your back?
Why do you "guess" the first officer did the landing.
once i was onboard on landing at heathow on a a340 or 747 i forgot. i saw the ground coming to me way faster than usural so i acturally did the brace position. and guess what? the ground effect came and the plane (not the pilots) made the softest landing i have ever experienced. lol
I'm new to PPL, but..what are you talking about?
True but I don't think that there was sand on the runway because you can hear the thrust-reversers on very high which wouldn't be o n that high there was sand because of sand ingestion into the engine.
wtf is the approach 100 knots? lol very fast descent
@corkaviation you cant say that all 737's come to fast in, it depends on the pilot and what he does! you can just slow the plane down....
@PilotGleb all stalls are uncontrolled haha
i wonder how it feels like going in a hard landing i hope i get one
Flight Attendant: We are now touchdo.. Aooooch, holy cow... Yup, this was a very hard landing by Alaska Airlines.
Good landing :)
Well, you know that saying! A safe landing is a landing that you can walk away from! LOL
Same happen to me I think it's normal to be too high I was flying Ryanair to LONDON STANSTED ;) and I was see 4 white lights ;)
I thought the 737NG was equipped with autoland? .. lol I guess that's me.. the 737-400's we have don't have it.. maybe the NG's do? Idk :S
dang u guys were comin in real fast
9:30 APU start, when i was 12 in 2011, i got to start it on an SWA B737, N447WN.
yes. on the landing you could tell he couldnt flare or anything he just went straight down and almost drove into the runway
This must be Ryanair’s Alaska livery
After watching numerous episodes of Mayday, I just hope that the Captain noted this landing in the logbook. Maintenance needs to check the landing gear after such a hard landing.
This wasn't at Deer Valley
OMG that looked like fun- that's one way to wake up everyone before arrival...bet somebody 's fragile luggage got damaged...

Josh Miller what a run-on sentence
This is like Korean Air Lines Boeing 737-800 bound for Ulsan. The pilot seem to slam the plane purposely. At least you guys had a flight attendant that humored you a bit. Our KAL Flight was so gloomy.
It was like that for me for all kal flights

@sean2015
That's precisely what happened and it's common at Phoenix, Las Vegas or even Palm Springs.
@khalilovH i think he ment it in a way like skipping the video
Any landing you walk away from is a good landing
they say a good landing is one that you can walk away from, a great landing is one where you can use the plane again :P
i was there two weeks ago at night there was hardly any aircraft there
maybe they did it for a show? :/
a show on how not to land a plane and how to hurt your back
Dude why the first officer? It is possible that the captain had a bad day
maxed out the shocks on that landing
maybe it was from the electrical device you had left on
....relevant data. that landing looked a little harder than the average crunch but still nothing to wet your diaper over. they're not all going to be greasers but keep in mind that comfort doesn't equal safe. the opposite is often true.
Lollipop well were here. That WA great

nice vid defo hard landing

It's the process of letting the airplane 'Float' above the runway until it slows enough to drop onto the asphalt. Makes for softer landing.
haha I love the flight attendant lol
looked like he added power to flare up or something!
almost everything up to -300 is a good landing, starts to be hard around -500, lol
Sometimes you want a hard landing like that. The guys up front know what they are doing.
keep in mind that the plot that spends time pumping the yoke for a greaser is also usually flying over a lot of runway. on speed, on slope, on centerline, with a touchdown at ref + zero (not stalled holy crap) at the 1000 mark. all that plus a perfect round-out to a smooth landing is rare in the best conditions even with a radar altimeter. get the weight on the wheels asap so the pax can live to bitch about it on TH-cam. you must be chuck yeager to critique a guy from row 30 without all the re

Feels like a roller coaster.
