Question ~ curious what your lineage taught regarding Horse Stance foot-placement.
Asked because my Tao Sifu in Northern Shaolin allowed freedom for his students liberty to experiment. Some of us had toes "pointed" downstage (forward) during forms (kata) while some preferred to "splay feet slightly outward" due to his/her own skeletal alignment.
I've perused katas (on yüütōōb) as we all have, and most seem quite strict about toes facing perpendicular to downstage (front/forward).
I respect of course any teacher's lineage regarding aforementioned, but always felt relieved that my Tao Sifu (retired) allowed us liberty in this area, to not point toes perpendicular, perhaps for my own skeletal alignment. It just felt correct for my own body.
I've trialed different lineages throughput the years and some teachers abhor any deviation.

I can't recall ever using horse stance in Meibukan Goju-Ryu. Always sumo, which feels much better for me as well. My ankles are not very forgiving. 😂

@@TheKarateShrimp very true! The Sumo foot placement is much more forgiving on the ankles.
