He is. We see him here in Kona every few months. (He's got a house at the 4 Seasons) Ran into him at Target once. Super genuine dude. ..which didn't surprise me at all. Been following him since '91. I honestly don't trust anyone who dislikes Dave. Lol
That's the thing. Typically, when one gets that famous, they can't help but let their ego get to them when everyone around them is telling them how amazing they are. Once in a while, however, a genuine person like Grohl makes it big and there's nothing that can change them from being a truly good person once they figure out fame. Pretty interesting. As many times as he's heard how amazing his records are, that "Thanks, man!" was truly sincere.
+hashdealer88 Orrrr... You're jaded and that's just what he likes to write now. Dave is the LAST person on earth to "keep the mansion going". ..especially by sacrificing his ideal of good music. Are you new here? Lol He's the most humble and down to earth person ever. He really IS that happy and approachable. I don't like a lot of their new stuff either, but I can guarantee 1,000% that he stands fully behind all of it ..and that's all that matters. One of many examples: Their first "anthem" smash hit "Best of You" wasn't even originally going on the record. He had no perception of its hit-worthiness at all. He had shelved it...
How those people kept it together the entire time like it was just another day, is beyond me. I'd be on the floor like Wayne and Garth praying to these guys! RIP T.H.
I would have said "no way" 221 times. I dont get how this guy is so calm. Just the thought of seeing the actual moniey wrench and my hero tapes make me want to cry. Not fair.
Lol probably, there testing the reaction to see what the average joe on the street thinks... that’s one of the best parts of being a muso and making original music, seeing the reaction and they wouldn’t always be able to see someone they don’t know react to it live in front of them!! All that hard work, emotion and time u put in, to see what people are gonna think or feel, awesome thing for them to watch they would of enjoyed that part with them!!!
Yeah, but that guy had NO reaction. How? When I first heard Bridget Burning it made me sit up and smile after which it moved into my brain permanently😅
I've been watching this video for years and years dreaming of being able to take a tour. The history and talent displayed in this studio absolutely blows my mind. The Foo Fighters are now 25 years old. They're absolutely responsible for the amazing friends and family I have today.
I am happy Dave is successful with Foo Fighters. He has proved that he was not only a shadow. He was really a star put behind. Now he is in front, and it is the right time he is in front.
Honestly I'm not so sure it won't be the end of the band.. they've been around 25 years and I just don't know if I can see them getting a new drummer and going on. They might have somebody fill in to do some more shows but I'm not so sure they'll make any more music...
Worst case scenario the Foos are done but rest assured Dave will never stop making music. Give him a year or two and he'll be working on something again. I don't claim to know him or his thought process but if he's anything like me then eventually music becomes the medicine for grief
aaaaaaaaaaaand fast forward a year, just bought the cd, im sure Josh will do the business for the band, its just that connection that Dave had with Taylor that we won't see again :/
Damn, having such a huge success, they are still totally down to earth. Just such nice people. Many People would say "Don´t touch ANYTHING! These things are so expensive!" While Dave lets them get comfy in there. Also he seems to be a really cool guy. And btw, i envy them for a that big studio. Its so damn huge!
I think part of what made Dave the well rounded guy he is was the experience of Nirvana's rapid success and Kurt's suicide. Dave was in the middle of all the success with Nirvana but said in a couple interviews, he got to hide behind the drums and wasn't noticed so much. Kurt was in the spotlight under constant scrutiny being torn to shreds by the media. He was not even treated like a human anymore. I believe the pressure to be perfect was overwhelming and that's what lead to his suicide. Dave got to closely witness this phenomenon at a very young age which gave him a wisdom beyond his years and has fueled Foo Fighters success like crazy. He truly is an awesome down to earth guy.
Dave pulls out the damn Monkey Wrench master tape and just hands it to him, like that shit isn't worth $600,000+ lol. Would be crazy to hold such a piece of history in your hands. Every recording your hear of that song, COMES from that tape itself.
These guys don’t deserve to being going through what’s going on right now. 😢 I personally know how nice of a guy Dave is, I just wish Taylor was still here.
7:35 Thanks Dave! I really cannot listen to most newer music that is engineered to 100%. That makes it all sound alike. Thanks for still making music the old fashioned way with character.
David was a neighbor if ours for few years. His beach house was around the corner from ours. We met by chance when his dog was chasing mine around on the beach. He was this scruffy guy Tien 501s cut into shorts with a classic smiley t-shirt. He is a genuine guy with a personality unmatched. I'm a diehard nirvana fan but never treated Dave like a rock star which I know he appreciated. Just a great neighbor and great guy👍
IKR! I am so jealous! "...when you're a kid and you're playing music, you can't afford gear and then once you start getting money, everyone gives you shit for free." man, that really clicked with me.
4:30 The entire Industry is like that. I work for Hollywood. When you start, you're starving and broke. You then work your way up and ppl give you free shit even if you don't want or need it.
FOO Fighters..HQ ..great behind the scenes into the band and their workings.Dave seems such a nice guy the type that would buy you a drink in a bar and have a chat
I’ve watched this so many times because I’m so fucking jealous of these people. What I would give to chill with Dave and the guys. I would jam with them and it would be AWESOME.
Taylor was sooo cool and seemed so gentle until he smashed the drums making epic music. Tragic loss, thoughts and prayers to his family and the Foo Fighters family. RIP Taylor your talent and treatment of others will be missed.
Great stuff Dave and band and what a lovely studio and warehouse full of gear to manage. Nirvana was a game changer and Dave has done so much stuff with the Foo Fighters and his own stuff ever since. His 20 minute track playing all the instruments proves what a talent he is and it's such a shame that Taylor Hawkins has passed away has he was so good as well. Good luck with your future projects Dave from a 66 year old drummer in the UK.
Daves reaction to the "Nirvana" drum set was kinda awkward @ 4:50. I just cant get a good read on him sometimes when it comes to his time in Nirvana. There are times when he openly talks about his time with Nirvana, but then other times it seems like he wants to distance himself from Nirvana. Why does he not want to acknowledge the Nirvana drum kit?
I don't think his time in Nirvana was all rainbows and kittens. Plus, he probably grew tired of the fame pretty quickly. At some point you would want to move on....
Dave, people use DAW's because we cant afford 1 million + dollars in analog gear, but we still want to rock. It's still equally primitive and punk to record your album on a DIY 400 dollar PC rig and some SM57's.

I love it. Every Foo Fighter interview I watch is the same: Just people talking to people. I had never considered that of all the shows I've played nobody has given me a free mandolin or guitar or anything else. Hell, to get paid is great! I don't suppose that I know these guys just from the interviews but it seems to me that their music reflects the people that they are.
I like tape and small recorders. I love analog. This world and computers are changing fast. I love the music with harsh edges, soft under belly and motion in the wind. Good to see you and bandmates. eleanor g.
No, you're right, there were awkward moments, it's bcuz of the cameras & meeting ppl for the first time, & since it was a contest, it's sort of forced geniality, though Dave always seems pretty cool. It's just hard to feel comfortable & natural when there are cameras watching your every move, makes it awkward as hell. I'm awkward myself, so I recognize it too! I would've asked if we could get rid of the cameras & if I could record my songs if it was me! I wonder if he'd let me record there? Even though I'm a nobody, not established, not a "professional", etc., I have a lot of songs & very little access to equipment. I just don't live in LA though! He's probably too busy anyway, doing all kinds of other projects. I want to record analog, I'm not much into the tech perfection which can make it sound computer generated. Oh well!
The Foo is my all time favorite. They just seem so down to Earth. Generic comment I know. But it’s true. Thanks guys, for making this old rock a little more tolerable with your tunes.
Frances Farmer wait are you trying to really disturb this mind tho LOL!! too many fantasies....way too many fantasies going through my head right now LOLOL!!
So cool that people are still interested in vintage recording techniques and vinyl, they have unique characteristic. I love CD but I really love recording on tap and listening albums on vinyl.
I've gotta say for a mega rich, mega famous rock star he always comes across as a really cool guy and pretty grounded for someone in his position.
He is. We see him here in Kona every few months. (He's got a house at the 4 Seasons) Ran into him at Target once.
