@ One of the best nights of my life was when I got to see "Them Crooked Vultures" in a small club in West Hollywood. Getting to see Dave do his thing on the drums, and also the others in that band, up close and personal was incredible. The only problem I have is that I had a feeling that group was too good to be true and would end up being a one-off project for all of them, even though they claimed they had another album in the pipeline at the time. It's been 9 years!
It's depressing that every time Dave Grohl is interviewed there's a "let's talk about Kurt Cobain's death" moment.

I had no idea she passed away around the same time as Taylor. Man. Losing both of them in such a short period. Dave is such a strong person. Been through a lot. His mother definitely had a hand in that.

Hell yes. Dave is also one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I still have a photo of him putting me in a headlock after a Foo Fighters concert. Got to shoot the shit with him for a few minutes, as well, and he's just... grounded. Doesn't take anything for granted, loves his fans and credits them for his success, and is just a dude I'd genuinely sit around with and chat while we had a beer. That's how he came across.
I don't know man. Grohl took members of a much better band, Sunny Day Real Estate, and treated them like shit. Being a control freak, secretly re-recording drum tracks so the bands drummer is literally no longer on the album is petty, shitty and unacceptable. He's a bad person and a generic musician.

for shows like this, they do pre-interviews so Dave has to sign off on everything they ask, so in this case he knew and approved it.

I really hate people's insistence to ask questions related to Kurt Cobain. Can't they see this topic makes them sad? Just look at Dave's mother and see how her big smile was vanished. I wish people stopped doing this.

You're not going to make the world perfect by ignoring its many harsh and sad realities. He was the drummer in the most popular band in the world for a time. Also a friend of its brilliant frontman whose pain made him choose the path of least resistance in the end. And as authentic as the happiness that Dave and his mum share regarding his success, it is equally appropriate and welcome to see that same authenticity so clearly visible on their faces and in their voices when the subject came around to that dark time in their lives. A pair of really decent folks, mother and son, and Colbert asked a perfectly reasonable question. Support mental health awareness, talk about it, and make governments responsible for providing the massive funding needed to address the most serious social crisis of our lifetime.
Well I'm pretty sure Kurt Cobain's mom was one of the moms she discussed in the book, and she would be the one with the most famous son (other than her own), so dead or alive, he was going to come up
I'm with you Rog. In the context of the interview it was a pertinent and expected question. Sure, out of everyone it hurt, these 2 would be amongst those that hurt the most when it happened but it was within reason.
It is about time people moved on from it. Listen to a Nirvana album and remember him that way, but let the family and band members fully move on.

Dave's Mom died about a week ago, but I just read about it today. So sorry Dave after Taylor and now your dear sweet supportive fun funny Mom. Rest in Peace. Dave dude, sorry man, have a good guy-cry or two or twenty, but as a big Foo fan and respectful human I/we all wish you well, soldier on, take care, be good. Lots of love from all of us.
I remember when Nirvana did "Teen Spirit" on SNL, and i couldn't keep my eyes off of the drummer who was all arms and wild hair flying everywhere. What an amazing talent

I saw the foo fighters perform while he had a broken leg, so he was sitting in this giant "guitar throne." Still put on a hell of a performance, better than most other bands I've seen.

One of the best shows I ever saw was Billy Idol, just after he started to recover from his big accident. He wasn't supposed to tour because of his injuries. But there he was, twice as large as life, hopping around, using a cane just to stay upright. And happy, joyful, pouring out enough energy to power an arena. And super connected to his audience. I have been to other big name shows where the band obviously was too bored for words and would rather be anywhere else but there. That stinks. On ice.

Arlandria is a mix of Arlington and Alexandria, VA... and yes since he grew up in VA, it's probably a reference to both the state and his mother.

All the ingredients for a good, safe and warm childhood, and therefore: future, are right in this very interview. Dave Grohl, you are a lucky man!
John Lennon is a example where this doesn't apply. He did have a shit childhood and did drugs, but he got a bullet to the chest by a psychopath.

I wish it was that simple, but it isn't. Many, many parents are supportive, loving and good - yet it's a crap shoot and some kids just turn out rotten. There are many arguments regarding "heredity vs environment" and yet I might add some other mysterious component that can't be pigeon-holed. There are just as many stories of success from kids with every single thing against them, yet they thrive. Kids with the best of everything - bad to the core, murderers or wife beaters or whatever. Dave developed a great character; some came from his Mom, but the rest came from within him - not luck.
That's true man...my mom never cared for me.. never mind noticed or cared about my talents as all my friends do. But your right. Super important for that support. My mom kicked me out the house for smoking weed at 17. What real mom does that? I'm 36 still fucked from that and my mom still doesn't care.
You can tell a lot about a man by how he treats his mother. Dave Grohl is a God to me! He is just a wonderful musician, human being, father and husband. Love this man and his music!

It's pretty cool watching these interviews of Dave with his mom and seeing how close they are. I lost my mom to cancer in August 2016, that wound still cuts very deep. Dave's relationship with his mom makes me miss my mom even more.

Hey Kate, I'm coming to this late, but I just wanted to tell you that I started in the Rock band business when I was 14 years old as a bass player/singer. It was 1972 and my mum had no choice but to drive me from gig to gig and either listen to the music or go home and let the other guys in the band (who were older than me) drive me home at the end of the gig. She mostly liked to hang around to wait for me, and became a bit of a hero while chatting to crew or spectators. At the time, I felt embarrassed by her hanging around, but it was many years later that I found out that she was loved by everybody that came in contact with her. She treated all the guys in my band like a son and this made my life so much easier. Dave's Mum seems much like my Mum. It's heart-warming!

Dave Grohl is, hands down, one of my top 5 favorite people on the face of this earth. I just love EVERYTHING about him. He is such a class act and has so much integrity, so much raw talent, and he is so incredibly humble. I just love how he walks on stage with his mother, holding her arm and slowly helping her up the steps. SO SWEET!!!!! Ladies, take note. This is a REAL man. His wife is a very lucky woman!!!! I cannot WAIT to see the Foo Fighters play next summer. They are performing at a venue that is literally 3 minutes from my house in July!!!!!

If it does get brought up...you are kinda left thinking 'huh, another one of those Kurt questions he has been asked countless times'
But also...if it doesn't get brought up, its also kinda strange, you're also kinda left thinking 'hmmm, wonder why they didn't mention Kurt' and almost seems deliberate to avoid that topic.
I just think Kurt and the history of Nirvana is obviously a big part of his life, always will be, and is always gonna be made relevant for the rest of Daves life. And atleast a positive...its remembered, hes not just seen as the singer of the Foo Fighters and his involvement with Nirvana/Kurt is just ignored.

In this context though with his Mom there it felt so viscerally enlightening to hear her speak of her experience with Kurt dying as a mother.
I viewed Kurt so differently imaging him from Virgina's perspective and contrasting her with Kurt's mother.
Dave is really, really lucky to have such an amazing Mom. I wish Kurt could have eventually had the same relationship with his Mother.
It's very interesting to hear Dave talk about how if he ever felt overwhelmed he would just go back to Virginia and be with his Mom and his old friends. Kurt didn't really have that.
Kurt to Virginia sounds like the poor little boy down the street being abused and is friends with her son and they tried to help how they could and were inevitably heartbroken by his death.
I would love to hear more of her perspective on the situation as a lucid, caring Mother. I hate hearing Kurt's Mom talk about any of it. She just seems so toxic.
