Nintendo’s poster child has used a lot of odd power-ups over the years, but for this list we’ll be looking at the strangest of them all. They might be weird to “some” but it’s what makes the games unique and memorable. My personal favourite has to be the frog suit because I remember seeing it in the cartoon show and when I got SMB 3 I was so excited to see it 🐸.
Weird doesn't mean bad.
I get the feeling that the narrator here just doesn't like any of the Super Mario games and just thinks the whole franchise is stupid and weird. Why do a video on something you don't like or even care about?

Weird and nostalgic are 2 different subjects. It can be both. You may think it's nostalgic, a lot of people think it's weird. Why many people "hate" it is the controls are tricky.
Weirdness, like or dislike, and nostalgia are 3 categories of adjective.

It's tied to one character [Toadette], turns her into a Peach lookalike, and is the most meme-able powerup afaik.
I think it’s because the memes made it weird and not Nintendo themselves.

I've always contested calling the Poison Mushroom a power-up, and its appearance in Super Mario Maker 2 where it actually chases you has, at least in my mind, cemented my position on it as the correct on. It's an enemy, or at least a trap, disguised as a power-up.

Yeah. Then there are the mini shrooms that make you small and increase your speed and the pitch of Mario’s voice.
I always thought that the Frog Suit was pretty cool. Also the Boo Mushroom brings back so much Nostalgia from playing SMG series.
One I figured would be an honorable mention: The Super Carrot from Super Mario Land 2. You would think giving Mario a rabbit-themed power would allow him to jump higher, like the Frog Suit. Instead, he can flap the ears to fall slower and cross larger gaps. No jump boost, no extra attacks, just slower falling.

It's really a shame it only appeared in one game. Why does Nintendo always have to keep one or several power-ups in one game and forget about it instead of bringing some of them back in future Mario games?
Nah I think the boomerang, frog suit, and shoe r the most underrated.
@@samyb4566 Because they suck at bringing back classic things which made their games more memorable and unique. They've lost their magic touch lately. (I still like them nonetheless)
Shigeru Miyamoto knew that no one outside of Japan understood what the Hell a Tanooki was or why it turned into a statue in Super Mario Bros 3, including us. But he didn't even care because he loved it so much and so did we. Karibu's shoe was just special because of its rarity and we argue over who got to play the level. Why the raccoons fly in Japan is still beyond me 🦝👀
you should look up how exactly they fly. It'll either make you laugh or cringe
Nothing weird at all about these powerups. If Mario wears them they make perfect sense.
Remember, Mario's "adventures" are a result of too many mushrooms, just go with it.

10: The Super Bell & Giga Bell are freaking amazing, cat power gets business done!
8: The Frog Suit should have been a main item in the series and could have improved so many Water Levels.
6: The Tanooki Suit is everything the Super Leaf is and better, plus, the Tanooki stone form can kill some enemies you normally can't, really great!
4: That shoe is freaking awesome, completely crush those spikes!
1: The Weird Mushroom is just funny and surprisingly helpful.

10. Oh yeah, and the cat costume lets you run up walls for a few seconds.

I never really knew about the frog power up until I encountered the game site for Mario fan games. None of the games I played had the power up but while I was scrolling down you do see sprites of Mario just like on a block somewhere and it had him as the tanooki and one as a frog and I looked at that to this day thinking to myself "that can't be a real power up right?" I basically jinxed it
What do you think the old Mario games would have been like if these power ups were there?

Fun Fact: Super Mario Bros 3 was originally supposed to feature a power-up to turn Mario into a Centaur (half-man, half-horse)
"SMB3" almost had a centaur power-up, but it obviously got cut. Imagine Mario as a centaur and then try to tell me the frog suit or super bell are really all that weird.
I've already seen some pretty weird concept art of it... It's not as cool you'd think!

10. Super Bell: Red cat mario is more weird than gold is the colour of royal cat mario and giga cat mario.
9. Boo Mushroom I like the vanish cap better but at least mario can add flying to invisibility and intangibility.
8. Frog Suit: Nah I prefer the penguin suit, oh well amphibian skills for my hero mario.
7. Power Flower: I have no issue with this power up but I admit the wing is my favourite flight power up.
6. Tanooki Suit: Thanks to this power ups evolution I have no issue with it at all.
5. Gold Flower: What are you talking about? A power up like is brilliant for charity and you dont even have to rob the rich.
4. Goomba Shoe: Definitely weird thanks to mario's ultra hammer we no longer need this power up.
3. Pal Pill: eh I dont talk the paper mario series still cant believe they cancelled the mario+luigi series.
2. Spring Mushroom: I like to believe mario can jump sky high without any aid or power ups.
1. Weird Mushroom: Absolute abnormality no one likes this mushroom.
Number 9 is one of my favorite power-ups. :3
Hey the frog suit, tandoori suit, and golden mushroom powerups may be weird but they're still pretty cool.and useful imo.

I dont know what you mean by weird. The cat suit and there are worlds where you need this power. Its not random that has no reason of being there. Most of these have good uses in the games.

The spring mushroom is a level diminisher and the poison mushroom (that is much more accurate) is a power down item.

Well I think the Super Bell, the Tanooki Suit, the Frog Suit, and the Blue Shell are not weird power-ups. They actually represent Nintendo's creativity.
I can't remember when I first saw goomba shoe as a power up actually I think it was Super Mario maker but I was just like "first of all what's a mushroom looking enemy doing in a shoe second of all why does he have to ride that?" And then I thought about it and I was like "maybe...... maybe because it's supposed to be a reference to fungi in your shoes???" You know sometimes mushrooms can grow in your shoes? Basically that. But then I said wait doesn't that mean Mario should be like affected by that in some way?

Okay I get it so the DS version power flower I get that wario turns into metal, Luigi turns invisible, Yoshi can breathe fire (which makes sense) But why does Mario inflate? like that's just weird AF. Couldn't they have just given him the wing cap so that it more or less emulates the Caps from the original? 🤦🤦
I Actually like the boo mushroom. So it doesn't mask you from the boos but rather attracts them more. I suppose that makes sense I mean think about it if you were a boo and a random dude who looks like Mario who's also a boo appears around you, aren't you going to investigate it? Or I have a better analogy. Put it this way it's like Danny phantom entered the ghost zone all the ghosts are going to be looking at him and for him

All power-ups are weird.
I'm surprised that there was no mention of how the Tanuki Suit was the only power-up that could kill the Rotodisc enemies in Mario Bros 3. It's easily the most functional outfit within the game.
The hammer suit can kill em too I think it's been an while since I played smb3
It's just the tanuki statue. I can easily remember that, because of how unique it is. The hammer suit can kill boos and thwomps.
