damn right! used to spend lots of time in the supermarket and gas station magazine section looking for codes in NP and GamePro as well as a few other mags. us poor kids could barley afford the system and games let alone paying for codes every time a new game came out!
Believe it or not, World 7-4 from Mario 3 was one of my personal favorites. It was challenging. Swimming while autoscrolling, going through a field of electrified jellyfish, with Big Berthas and Bloopers floating around...just good times.
Same here World 7 on Mario 3 was hard I got the game on my Wii and am still stuck on world 7 I passed it once but when I was done playing it I accidentally didn’t save it to World 8 in it put me back to World 7.
The Special worlds from Super Mario World, anyone else remembers what happens after you beat those levels? I just wish they do that again with the new Mario games it was so dope.
There are so many memorable Super Mario levels that you were going to miss some no matter what. Another very memorable level that comes to mind is the tower level in world 5 of SMB3. That level has always had a really mysterious and mystical vibe going for it. The area with the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling is pretty much unforgettable.
What we used to do was to buy the Mario play books from Nintendo. It Showed you all the levels layouts and tricks. That's what we did before the internet hahaha! I had one for Super Mario Bros 3 😄👍

Mario 3 was the only game I remember actually going to the store and getting it new. As for the books well, we always got them in the swapmeets where there was always guys that sold them cheap along with video games as well. Believe me, my folks were cheap asses when it came to video games. Just getting the Nintendo Game System took a lot out of begging out of this 8 year old boy back in 1988 hahaha! So Yeah, not a rich little kid growing up. I also had friends that had the books & would borrow them from.
I loved the sunken ghost ship in Super Mario World for that EPIC fall to the bottom. Another one of my favorites is 7-4 from Super Mario 3. This is the one where you're running across an entire level of those muncher plants and the ONLY way through is to keep collecting star after star to make yourself invincible.
Personally, the most memorable 2D Mario level for me is World 7-7 from Super Mario Bros 3. In that level, you had to keep catching the invincibility stars as you ran across those damn chomping crops coming out of the pipes. It was so freaking challenging, which is why I remember it so well.

Did you know: Super Mario Bros 2 was not originally a Mario game. It was under a different name with different characters but reskinned when it was going to be released outside of Japan because it seemed more like a Mario game than anythign else (which is why its so weird)
TheBlunderman bob Actually Super Mario Brothers 2 was originally made with Super Mario characters, but in Japan Doki Doki Panic characters replaced the original Super Mario characters, yet in the United States they kept the original Mario characters knowing that America had no clue what Doki Doki Panic was. I would have listed as n°1 the Bowser´s castle from Super Mario Bros 3, that is a masterpiece of architecture with many creative rooms, obstacles and different roads you can take according to how equipped you are, and also because of the amazing final battle against Bowser in which you have to make him dig his own tomb by making him jumping against you on the bridge floor, or just simply by shooting him fire balls if you are equipped with a flower, or another very interesting possibility: shooting just FIVE hammers at him if you arrive there as a Hammer Brother Mario :)
Some other levels I would have picked: From SMB1: 1-2: Your first trip into and out of a pipe if you didn't know about the shortcut in 1-1. Also marked the first secret area with the Warp Zone past the exit pipe and also the entrance to the famous "World -1". 2-3: Run! Just run! 8-4: A fitting finale with the ultimate pipe maze (at least for that game). Go the wrong way and it's back to start for you! It really made you use your brain to reach the final Bowser and finally see Peach at the end instead of yet ANOTHER Toad. From The Lost Levels (SMB2 Japan): 7-3: Riding the wind after bouncing miles into the air off green springboards from platform to platform. Good times! B-4: Plays tricks on you by making you think you're in a never-ending maze and every possible route is wrong. From SMB3: The Angry Sun level: Run away from the sun! World 4 Fortress: Two words: Hidden Quarter. 7-5: Maybe it's just because of most of the games that my parents would play with me and my brother were puzzle games or games with puzzles in them (like Zelda), but I've always liked levels that made you use your brain. And this one did so without being overly difficult (World 8 Fortress, anyone?). From SMW: Funky: Those coins at the end of the level. Enough said. From Yoshi's Island: 6-7: I usually love levels that constantly keep you on your toes, and this one is no exception. Extra 2: See above.
We figured out everything from Super Mario World WITHOUT the internet because we weren't lazy kids...we actually WORKED using the trial and error method! To be honest, it takes YEARS of practice to beat the "Fast Boat" in Mario Bros 3 World 8 without the use of a P-Wing...

Super Mario Bros World 1-1 was my first introduction not only to Mario, but to a video game. At the age of 4 on the regular NES back in 1989. Nostalgia galore.
I was playing Yoshi's Island on a road trip once on my Game Boy, and like every annoying little brother, I had my volume up without headphones. Once everybody heard that crying, that's when they told me to shut up.
There is a big difference between baby bowser and bowser jr. Baby bowser (seen in the yoshi's island games) is bowser when he was younger and bowser jr is his son
This brought me back to my childhood! Thank you! :) I was actually playing Yoshi's Island around Thanksgiving, and that was when I noticed "hey! You can get high in this game!" Not that I do drugs myself, but I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.
You should have included the tower level in World 5 of SMB3. It was a classic bridging the two halves of the two levels, which was definitely a new thing as far as Mario levels go. Again, as you mentioned, there was lots of groundbreaking stuff in SMB3, but that was definitely unique. :-)
Also Front Door from Super Mario World and Wario's castle from Super Mario Land 2 should've been on here. Front Door was the most magical house of horrors while Wario's Castle was infuriating as hell, but it was SOOO satisfying after you beat it!
Though lots of us know can tell when it's mario all stars and original NES versions of the game, you guys should've stuck to the originals, just for those new generations that still don't know about the snes port of the classic games
One of my personal favorites is the first lava level in Super Mario World. Don't remember the exact name but I think its in world 3. In side the cave/mountain.
There was one ghost house level in super mario world (SNES), in bowser's land I think, where there was a key hole at the top of a tall room that you needed a feather to get to, but was surrounded by blocks except an opening that was way was too small for you to enter as big mario. You had to hit a block that opened up a string of coins whose path would change depending on certain conditions, then hit a pow block and get up to the entrance and run/duck to get by, either that or fly and then duck and manage to land in the crack, then jump (while ducked) until you wedge yourself into the room. It was hard as balls to do but felt so great to do.
Completely agree with number one. I recently played that world on my 3DS without the P Wing, and I honestly felt like a boss after I finally beat it. It's a great level!
The Sunken Ghost Ship is the only ghost level in Super Mario World that Yoshi will enter. SMB3's 5-3 is the only level you get to use Kuribo's Shoe. Why?

I agree with Number 1 but you should've included World 5-3 because it includes in my opinion the second best power up in the 2D Mario games (my favorite is the Super Star).
+Kyo Baby Bowser is the past version of Bowser when he was a baby he first appeared in Yoshi's Island. Bowser Jr. is Bowser's son and he first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine
Personally, I would have put ten stages all from Super Merio 3 in this top ten list. That game is simply awesome!! (and I must say there are too many stages from Super Mario World here, which is a too overrated game, funny but too overrated)
Level 1-1 of New Super Mario Bros. (the one for the DS). That game brought 2D Mario games back from the dead. Level 1-1 in particular is memorable as it felt like the classic first level but with better graphics and because it let you use for the first time the mega mushroom.

What about the abandoned World 7 fortress on SMB3? You know, first room full of bricks and a hidden P-block? Great way to stockpile lives that you'll no doubt need for that World 8 Airship.
1-1 should be number 1 IMO, solely because it's the most famous level in any game ever, even with what's probably the most recognizable video game theme ever. Would've also liked to see 1-2 at least in the honorable mentions. But good picks either way :)
SMB3 World 5-9 should at least get a mention. Vertical scrolling platform hopping with fire chomps (two, but that's more than enough) giving chase. One wrong move sends you falling to your doom. As the years turned in to decades, it has since become my favorite stage in the game.
On world 6-6 for the Wii, I had no problem getting through it because I had a mini mushroom saved from previous levels, so I just used that and ran across the level, took about 40 seconds to do it, so that's nice
I would've liked you guys to use footage from the NES version of SMB1, instead of the all stars SNES version. Especially when world 1-1 came up. It's and iconic level with an iconic theme and I thought the SNES footage you guys used really took away from it.
The first Goomba in World 1-1 in the original SMB has probably caused more deaths in any video game than any other villain ever.

You should have included the tower level in World 5 of SMB3. It was a classic bridging the two halves of the two levels, which was definitely a new thing as far as Mario levels go. Again, as you mentioned, there was lots of groundbreaking stuff in SMB3, but that was definitely unique. :-)

Also Front Door from Super Mario World and Wario's castle from Super Mario Land 2 should've been on here. Front Door was the most magical house of horrors while Wario's Castle was infuriating as hell, but it was SOOO satisfying after you beat it!
Though lots of us know can tell when it's mario all stars and original NES versions of the game, you guys should've stuck to the originals, just for those new generations that still don't know about the snes port of the classic games

One of my personal favorites is the first lava level in Super Mario World. Don't remember the exact name but I think its in world 3. In side the cave/mountain.

There was one ghost house level in super mario world (SNES), in bowser's land I think, where there was a key hole at the top of a tall room that you needed a feather to get to, but was surrounded by blocks except an opening that was way was too small for you to enter as big mario. You had to hit a block that opened up a string of coins whose path would change depending on certain conditions, then hit a pow block and get up to the entrance and run/duck to get by, either that or fly and then duck and manage to land in the crack, then jump (while ducked) until you wedge yourself into the room. It was hard as balls to do but felt so great to do.

Completely agree with number one. I recently played that world on my 3DS without the P Wing, and I honestly felt like a boss after I finally beat it. It's a great level!

The Sunken Ghost Ship is the only ghost level in Super Mario World that Yoshi will enter. SMB3's 5-3 is the only level you get to use Kuribo's Shoe. Why?
About Kuribo's shoe, I guess that the creators didn't want to banalize such a power-up. Maybe they tought it too OP
Another tip for Vanilla Secret 3, if you get the halfway point and die, the puffer doesn't reappear making completing the level much easier

I agree with Number 1 but you should've included World 5-3 because it includes in my opinion the second best power up in the 2D Mario games (my favorite is the Super Star).

Personally, I would have put ten stages all from Super Merio 3 in this top ten list. That game is simply awesome!! (and I must say there are too many stages from Super Mario World here, which is a too overrated game, funny but too overrated)

Level 1-1 of New Super Mario Bros. (the one for the DS). That game brought 2D Mario games back from the dead.
Level 1-1 in particular is memorable as it felt like the classic first level but with better graphics and because it let you use for the first time the mega mushroom.

1-1 should be number 1 IMO, solely because it's the most famous level in any game ever, even with what's probably the most recognizable video game theme ever. Would've also liked to see 1-2 at least in the honorable mentions. But good picks either way :)

Yoshi's island is a masterpiece. I don't know how it doesn't make it into more of these lists.

You forgot WORLD 7 in SMB 3. Any stages from that world is phenomenal. The music is really good too.
SMB3 World 5-9 should at least get a mention. Vertical scrolling platform hopping with fire chomps (two, but that's more than enough) giving chase. One wrong move sends you falling to your doom. As the years turned in to decades, it has since become my favorite stage in the game.
On world 6-6 for the Wii, I had no problem getting through it because I had a mini mushroom saved from previous levels, so I just used that and ran across the level, took about 40 seconds to do it, so that's nice
I would've liked you guys to use footage from the NES version of SMB1, instead of the all stars SNES version. Especially when world 1-1 came up. It's and iconic level with an iconic theme and I thought the SNES footage you guys used really took away from it.
I like how Sunken Ghost Ship is the only haunted level in the game where Yoshi doesn't stay behind.
