Building a MASSIVE Entertainment Center

- This basement living room has been something we've wanted to tackle for a year or so now. We finally bit the bullet and started planning out our built in entertainment center. With an 85in TV and such a large wall I knew right away that this entertainment center was going to be massive. After measuring out the space and coming up with a plan we settled on a 15 foot long unit with lower cabinets and bookcases surrounding the TV. This will end up being the perfect place to store blankets, toys and board games. Time to go get lots of plywood!

Where did you get your rug?
Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included th-cam.com/users/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
Mrs Rogue Engineer was key to this job being a success. You are blessed with a Good Wife.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Honestly that’s the case with most of our projects.
GOOD WIFE
We've been talking about building one in our basement. I love the look of this one. We live in your area, so I'll keep the door guys in mind. They did a great job on them. Cool video, thanks!
Awesome book that gives you step-by-step photos th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt and directions to make every day project. I can see myself making a few of these projects and giving them as housewarming and holiday gifts!
very nice!!!!! the spacing and measurements are top notch considering it's such a massive built-in!
Wow, this is exactly the help I needed for a project that I’m working on! The explicit details were a big help. 😃
Having the right tools makes all the difference.
I like this build a lot.
But a tip from my experience, when you glue boards together, it increases the strength of the bond if you spread the glue evenly onto both surfaces. This way your glue gets pressed into every nook and cranny better.
Clamping it, for some reason, (explained in another video I saw) it increases the strength even more.
Hope this helps.
Strong Work!
Thanks for sharing this amazing piece of art!
Finally! Someone who mentions the cost of plywood!!
It's googleable, as it's different in different regions! Try it out!!
Beautiful work !
Great work man!!!
Man that turned out awesome!!!
Thanks Bill
Great work! Finished product turned out awesome!
Thank you!
This looks stunning. Great work.
That is beautiful. Best one I’ve seen.
I love your work! thanks
Best looking I saw so far .. so clean look
Form✔️Fit✔️Function✔️ great teamwork and resulant effort!!
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you
Nice job! Most of the drawer faces I've used in the past were independently screwed from the back of the drawer box front using short screws in two to four places, in addition to the handle holding, and that was for small drawers.
Great job guys. I need to build something just like this for my daughter’s basement.
Very nice job, u are very talented and God blessed your beautiful family
Also a Michigan native! Living in Macomb. Great build!
Looks great! Well done
Thank you!
That is a BOSS build...
Thanks man!
That’s pretty sweet!

You make it look so easy!! Turned out beautiful 💕
Great job
Great! U make everything look so easy but I know it is hard work.. I wish u could post diy wooden baroque/decorative fame for bookcase... Thank you!
Great video!! Bought a copy of the plans
Awesome! Thank you!
Well done. This is really nice.
Omg I love this I which when I own my home I wish I can have this same project done like yours I love it .
Will need to share this with my wife and she if I can get het to buy into me doing something similar in my basement! Nice job!
Thanks!
build-iful work as always!
This project is perfect to me as I'm planning exactly the same project on a wall that's about the same length at 14.5 feet. I was also going make 4 drawers in the middle but flank them with 2 cabinets on each side (4 doors total per side) but having seen your video I think doing what you did, with 1 cabinet with 2 doors on each side would definitely look better.
That's perfect!
I built a very similar entertainment center in our house, but I wish I had done a few things differently. 1) I wish I had built in an open space below the center counter for a center channel speaker. Instead, it's sitting on the counter below the TV. While this works, it's a bit large and imposing (and doesn't go over well w/ my family). 2) I wish I had built up the upper center shelf (spanning the two bookcases) to support more weight. We use it as record storage, and obviously they weight a ton. And while it's quite strong, I'm a bit nervous to add many more than we currently have in there (i.e. ~2/3's full or ~100lbs). 3) I wish I had cut and installed outlets in the base/side of each bookcase.
Looks great. You may have an issue with your floor however as the large unit built on top of it will restrict its movement. It’s better to cut the floor out below the unit and leave a 10mm gap to allow for expansion which is covered by the trim along the bottom.
It's LVP so it won't be an issue
@@rogueengineer LVP doesn’t expand due to changes in temperature?
@@deanmartin7593 very very minimally and this unit is not secured to the floor so it wouldn't prevent it from moving
Thanx for the content!!!! Awesome job man!!!!
Glad you liked it!
So nice 👍 thanks
Thank you!
It just amazing 👏
I want this!
excellent work, congratulations.👏👏
Just Wow!!!
nice job
Love this
Your house is like my dream! :D Love your style!
Thank you!!
Very nice, now all you need is a bigger TV!
Freaking amazing build.
Your website plans are amazing! :)
Found it!
Top....👍🏻👍🏻
I'm having trouble with project quotes, I've built large cabinetry for most of my life, but it's always been for family or myself and smaller projects for outside the family so money has never really been an issue until now. This project is a wall entertainment center about 126 " x 23.5" x 8'. It's going to hold a large screen TV two huge side speakers two bottom base speakers and four doors on the bottom with two of those doors having pull out drawers, using birch plywood and poplar trim. I've seen in store prices range from 1,000 to 5,000 with non-solid wood structure so I haven't found any pattern to price projects, I did see that cabinet makers in Texas make about $20 an hour which seems like it should be double that, so I'm just unsure of the method to come up with a reasonable quote.
I wish i had your skills. Very nice
Im almost done building mine. I went with 3 openings instead of 4. I have everything screwed in and I just finished wood filling the whole thing so all that's left for me is paint
Nice video
Two questions if I may please. 1) Was MDF an option and if not, why if possible please? I'm going to be building something similar but was unsure of plywood vs MDF. Only because I thought MDF was easier to prep and looked smoother than plywood but that's not the case looking at your brilliant example. 2) why did you choose not to add a back to the shelves? What will stop those shelves sagging so to speak? Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
This is awesome, I would totally pay you to come build ours if you didn’t live in Michigan lol
We're getting ready to build cabinets around our television right now. Did you put audio visual components in those cupboards or drawers? We're looking for some build instructions on Incorporating outlets inside the cabinets, how to hide the cords, And how to dissipate the heat.
Great build as usual and thank you for the inspiration. I would love to have something like this in the living room so I will start my wood working career by building this (hopefully everything goes smoothly) lol
lol!
Love the walnut coffee table also. Where is the couch from? Looking for this color to complete the look.
Thats so beautiful ❤, I wish I could have one of those at home. But unfortunately we live in a tiny apartment 😢
Great build! Simple, clean, elegant. Awesome work, sir! These measurements are *almost* identical to something I'd like to have in my home - but I can re-measure/re-configure the model I just bought from your blog (I hope). Question: I'm working with slightly less space, about 13 feet wide/9.5 feet high, and the depth is cut off on the left side by a lower window sill for only about 14-15 inches until you hit the window's moulding. Otherwise, the depth of the drawers/cabinets would only be about 14-15 inches, which is maybe a bit too small for something this scale? The standard depth is 20-24 inches. Any ideas for a workaround? Still worth it?
You could make the cabinets on the outsides shallower and have the ones in the middle be a little deeper. I’ve seen that done before and it looks good
Curious how high the base top is? Doesn't seem to be full countertop which, IMO, is a huge difference.
That looks great! Wish you could do something with ours?
Did I spot the Bible Project coffee table book in one of the shots?? I love mine! Awesome vid BTW
Thanks and you sure did! They are soo cool!
So beautiful! Question how much would something like this cost?
I think on his blog it says about 1k if you do it yourself. I contacted a local guy in NY, told me about 3,500 installed. I have 0 woodworking skills and 0 equipment, that’s why I quoted someone to do it for me.
Going to be building this in a few days! Just wondering what you mean (in the blog post) when you say "if against a wall, install L-shaped panel to side of cabinet" for allowing the door to open. I get that if the door edge is right up against the wall, it won't open... just wondering what exactly the L-shaped panel would look like and where it would go?
Also you didn't mention how much 1x2 and 1x4 trim would be required.. I'm guessing I can just calculate that based on the number of shelves, etc.
GREAT TUTORIAL / PLAN / GUIDE!!!
Yes, a little description of how you trimmed the wall side would be nice. I'm guessing you had one side of the L presenting a flush face with the cabinet doors to the wall and the other side of the L runs along the side of the cabinet so you could screw it from the inside of the cabinet? I was a little disappointed that your PDF plans didn't touch on some of the more complicated parts like finishing and trim. Thanks for posting, definitely got some good ideas for the built-in bookcase I'm working on.
I see you installed the cabinets directly on top of what looks like vinyl flooring? You're not supposed to do that but I really don't want to have to cut my vinyl flooring to install my cabinets.
Absolutely beautiful. I just bought the design and am going to attempt. What is the paint color? Sorry if I missed it
I really liked your design, but please can you tell me any way to hide all cable management of tv , like for tv power cable, soundbar , wifi router
Fabulous job and team work. High spec finish which I like. It’s given me some inspiration for our living room. We are in a bungalow and need our living room updating. Our conundrum is we have a wide chimney breast with two good sized alcoves. I envision built in units similar to yours but one side above base unit I want the 50” TV on an extendable tilting bracket that goes flush against the wall when not in use with the cables hidden so it looks aesthetically pleasing. I know what I would like….just don’t know how. Do you have any examples of such a project? Thank you for sharing 👍🏻🛠🧰
How much did this cost in material? And what tools do you need to do this project other than a nail gun and a table saw?
If you’re going to do all that work, you might as well use some nice under mount soft-close drawer slides.
I wanted to but I already had these slides.
Loved this!. Thanks for posting. quick questions. where do you put the sound bar and the subwoofer?
I noticed you have listed two different plywood types. Paint ready and pre finished but from different stores. Does it take 10 sheets or 5 total? What’s the difference between the finishes?
Can you please elaborate on the filler panel (if against the wall)? I don't quite get it. The cabinet box that sits along the wall will have a side panel (3/4" thick) and then the door can be mounted on that right? What is the L shaped fillter you are talking about?
I hit subscribe because you said Pontiac, MI. Woot woot. 😉. The build looks great though.
Thanks for the sub!
On the countertop, how do you get the 1x2 to blend into the plywood top so when you paint you don’t see any line?
Basement?! Dayum…
Wow impressive. Any plans to visit Niagara Falls? I'd love you to build me one.
Hard to tell from the video, was the face frame of the bookshelves ripped down 3/4” ply?
If doing a job like this, should carpet be ripped up or just place frame on top of it?
Holllld up, this is your BASEMENT?? Sheesh.
This is a really nice, well documented build. I'm struggling with my own similar design but I really want the center of the TV at eye level (42" from the floor). My rough calculations based on your measurements is that center of your 85" TV is around 55" from the floor. I'm curious as to whether the height of the TV was a design consideration. Thanks for all of the detail.
so what height did you end up using? I'm starting to plan mine out now
Stupid question, how are you attaching the book case assembly to the wall without using visible brackets?
Good job. I am in the process of building one, but I am sorry my videos are in spanish
Que?
@@newdudum jaja
what did this whole thing cost to build?
Where did you buy the doors from again?
Elliott Woodworking in Pontiac, MI. He's a local guy I use and is quick but you can also just google custom cabinet doors and there are a lot of options.
@@rogueengineer Cool man, be good if you could feature his business on the description and in your website. I'm planning to use your plans to build something similar in my bonus room.
Keep it up.
