This is a stunning Billy Bookcase hack! The crown molding and library ladder add to the charm and sophistication of the project. You and the "crew" really out did yourselves. Thanks for detailing it for all of us would be Billy Bookcase hackers!
This is gorgeous! You literally get to be Belle from Beauty & The Beast, and I’m freaking jealous! I like how the paint gives the room a dark academia feel. This now needs to be a legit reading room with a wingback chair and everything!
This is by far the best IKEA built-in project I've seen on TH-cam so far! Super smart to have the supports, prime and paint before assembly, reinforce the back with MDF, etc. All amazing tips.
This is absolutely gorgeous and everything I've been looking for. I recently purchased my own home and wanted floor to ceiling sheling for my office. This video made it such a reality for me! Congratulations to the whole family! 🎉❤
This is absolutely gorgeous! 💝 I think it was smart to incorporate the Billy bookshelves and further customize it. This looks like a library you see in manors and rich grand-daddy caves. I’ve been eyeing the Billy bookcases to customize, and now you’ve inspired me. It’s so awesome seeing women build affordable, yet expensive looking custom DIY projects. Good work!
lol omg I love your dad. not only for all he did but he's hilarious for putting on the waist trainer/belt Idk if that was for support or a joke but it made me laugh so thank you, & amazing work
This looks amazing! I do wonder though how much benefit do you think you get from using the Billy bookcases? With this much additional material and customization being done it seems like at some point it would be easier and not cost much more to just build the shelves too. I don't know if this particular project is at *that* point, and maybe I'm wrong about the cost since lumber is pretty pricy. Just curious how this project stacks up with materials, customization concerns, and cost looking at using Billy bookcases vs just making custom built ins from scratch.
This is amazing - totally want to recreate this whole thing for my new basement bar back, complete with sliding ladder to reach those expensive top shelf bottles lol ... thanks so much for detailing and sharing this out for everyone!
This project was amazing, I have all Ikea furniture and of course the billy bookcases, thanks for this great idea. I was amazed and now need to embellish mine. 😍
yessss do it! I know there are many who don't like IKEA furniture, but it's accessible to many people price-wise, so I really love to do hacks when I can to show what's possible with their pieces
Wow!! and even with the sliding ladder installed! This is so beautiful! great job and your dad is so awesome to fly all the way over to help you with this, go DAD!
This is soooo well timed. We’ve had the bookcases sat waiting to be started for a couple of months as we are doing a fitted bookcase and no word of a lie we’re going to paint them railings to match our staircase 😂
This is by far the best Ikea hack I've come across! I'm gonna copy your hack to the letter! Thank you so much for this; it really takes all the stress out of it for us 😉
Great job! I'm having a chuckle at the happy family vibes between you guys as you carry out the project. My sis, dad and me would be at thermo nuclear level by 15 minutes in!
Wow! That project turned out really really well. Thanks for the in depth walk through. I have been wanting to do something like this in my den for a bit now. Thanks for the inspiration !
Oh this looks AMAZING. I've been brainstorming and thinking of ways to create a bookshelf situation with a rolling ladder (because my gf has a ton of books and I just like the look of a case with a rolling ladder) and this will definitely give me some ideas.
That is one exquisite library Thank you for sharing I especially like the color you chose. I am planning on doing a home theater with cabinets underneath for storage space. And to hide the surround sound.
Honestly, you made this look so accessible. I've had plans for a library wall but was paralyzed on where to begin. I feel like I could totally do this!
Excellent job, we just moved into a new home with 10 ft ceilings and was trying to figure out what to do for bookshelves. We will be following your video and doing something very similar! Great Video!
after you did it all, did you wonder if building it from scratch would just be easier? (eg. not having to fill in the shelf holes, add shelf front plates)
Likely not easier only because I’d have to make 24 shelf cuts and definitely more expensive- I’m sure people a bit more skilled than me at ripping down shelves could do this easier but for me this was the best method
You guys did an amazing job! When I do this for my house I think that I am going to install library lights at the top of each book case. Hopefully I can find a tutorial as in depth as this one!
These look so good! Would you share the height of your shelving? I like the look of your spacing. And would you share if you permanently screwed in each shelf board. I’m inspired to duplicate this finished look. Thank you for the detailed video.
Absolutely love it. I have a wall in my den roughly the same size at 12’ tall and want to do built ins all the way up. ❤ my sister and I make a team just like the two of you. Same energy!!! I’ll share your channel with her because we are seriously about updating our own houses OURSELVES!! ❤🙌 Keep up the fabulous work! You’ve got a great father!
I love how genuine you and Krystle are! So cute and fun! This built in came out great, it is really interesting how this cabinets can be used to make a bigger piece.
Wow I’m so glad I discovered your channel. I have a huge library room in my house with four Billy book cases as well as 8 Kallax record shelf’s that I’ve been going crazy to figure out building a base so it’s not just on the floor. This has me understanding how to strengthen and get both of them up higher. Thanks so much y’all rock.I’m talking about expanding because I also need shelves for close to 1000 dvds, 1500 records and now even one more Billy totaling 5.
Love this project! I cant wait to make my own. I was wondering how it was holding up? I use really heavy books so I've always been worried about bowing with cheap wood. (Happened with my old bookcase)
Watching in uk this is absolutely stunning so well made. Im starting built in bookcases for my living room billy bookcase ones with glass doors on top panels on bottom and putting some pole wrap on them all black with gold hardwear. However ive never picked up a drill or any tool before but i like a challenge 😂
These look great! Curious if you did a comparison of buying lumber and building them without the IKEA units? You customized so much, I'm wondering if you "just" built them without buying from IKEA if it would have been even better.
Curious how the thicker (3/4"?) MDF backing affected the depth with the base & wall supports especially if the added top extensions have the regular thin Ikea backing board?? Did you have to rejog anything?
going for black paint definitely looks exclusive but the pain of having to do maintenance removing visible dust. white colour camouflage it. great work anyway. planning to buy billy bookcase too but still considering the default colour
Maybe I missed it but would you please share your spacing for the shelves? I love the look of them being different from level to level and am struggling planning for what I'll need! Amazing work! Definitely did the changing out the back of the cabinets trick once I saw how noticeable the trifold lines are!!
Really nicely done! I'm no stranger to Ikea hacks, but this one really impressed me. It would have been great if you had given the overall cost in materials for the project. Just to get a comparison of fully custom built-in vs. your hack. Thanks for sharing!
Probably bc her flooring was not totally level, & by building up a base it made sure that the bookcases were even without having to use shims. That’s only my guess though. I think I think it looks fantastic. I have two questions: 1. Did you add the base at the bottom just to add height or is their another purpose for that? 2. Now that you added trim, are the shelves no longer adjustable? If not, would there be a way to keep them adjustable?
1) we added the base to have a level space to place the bookshelves AND to add some height. We were able to add more height by adding on the optional ikea billy toppers too. 2) if you wanted to keep the shelves moveable - when you go to add the trim across the front, cut them just a hair shorter across and nail them in just to the front of the shelves! I'm not following the base execution. Can you help? I see the 1x4 then the baseboard. But magically a white piece is above it and it all lines up? Where did the base of the bookshelves team piece come from? Is it baseboard or 1x8?
I just priced semi custom cabinetry for a 15ft wall that would be similar to your project (with cabinet doors on bottom part), and it was 10k!!! I am going to price out this, but with sweat equity, i am sure it will be much more affordable! Thanks for the video...
Not really, I guess the general structure gets a bit sturdier if the whole molding is screwed onto each individual bookcase and not become as "floppy" over time as a singular Billy shelf might, but then again unless you put the books right on the edge so they will be supported by the 1x2 and the shelf itself it'll still go hanging if you don't just put 10 books and a vase on each shelf. If you want to support the shelf for higher duty I'd rather screw the extra 1x2 underneath the shelf alongside the middle if the longer side so it can't move downwards as much and then make sure you always position the wood so the center of what used to be the tree (rings getting smaller) is on the outside of where you screw it against, cuz otherwise it will just bulge over time just like the unsupported shelf would

Awww thank you babe! I'm telling ya its the Railings paint color by Farrow and Ball its so rich
I admire people who can visualize projects like this so much, I could build it but I'd never be able to come up with the plan myself
Funny I’m just the opposite I can dream it up but I can’t build it
STUNNING..I need to do this when my husband and I buy a house!
Yassss gal
How has it never occurred to me to colour match a Farrow & Ball paint? Genius.
it's my fav life hack honestly

My thoughts, exactly.
Exactly. But then they wouldn't rack up the views from people searching "Ikea Hack".
And why would you bother replacing the backing panels? The bracing and mounting make it sturdy enough, why not just paint the wall behind?
I agree
I was thinking same, esp when she HAD to bring two extra peops....👎😏

What a beautiful vintage bookcase you have built here Peony and Honey. Just amazing work and results.
Aww thank you
This is soooo well timed. We’ve had the bookcases sat waiting to be started for a couple of months as we are doing a fitted bookcase and no word of a lie we’re going to paint them railings to match our staircase 😂
Omg it was kismet! Railings is such a bomb color too! Good luck with your project!
Love live love the break down of costs. Aaaand the build off course.
Price transparency is super important to me! Thanks for noticing gal

Wow this turned out amazing ! Time consuming for sure, but soooo worth it in the end !!!
Thank you so much Wendy
Great job, Erika (and team)! It's beautiful! ❤

i have to say this is by far the best Billy Bookcase install i have ever seen. the supports you installed were sooo on point..love the look
Aww thanks you so much! That means a lot! We really tried to make it super structurally sound to last for years to come
Wow! That project turned out really really well. Thanks for the in depth walk through. I have been wanting to do something like this in my den for a bit now. Thanks for the inspiration !

You definitely could do this babe
I am so going to do something like this once I have a place I can settle down for the long term. It looks awesome.

Finally just finished mine and it looks so good! Thank you for the inspiration and detailed build!
quick tip for when priming with bin. you can tint it to the color you are using. did this for a black room i was painting.
Wow most incredible how to video, awesome team work and soooo beautiful!
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! We just built our own built-in bookshelves, and we used your video as a reference quite a bit!

Personnaly, I take the small ones of 16 inches, no more 32" for me because of the bowing.
it was very beautifully done just watch how your standing behind the power saw if it kicks back its you it hits always to the side

We saved time and money (hundreds) by going with the ikea units

That turned out absolutely perfect!
Curious how the thicker (3/4"?) MDF backing affected the depth with the base & wall supports especially if the added top extensions have the regular thin Ikea backing board?? Did you have to rejog anything?
I didn’t put the backing board it comes with on the top extensions either

You pretty mcuh built an entire bookshelf around the Billy bookcases. Do you mind explaining why you even used them?
Cheaper than buying all the lumber....
Psh I would do it to just save time. After building all of that, saving another 100s of steps to achieve a similar look, is a plus I think

It is fantastic looking, thank you for showing us the process. Can you please share the formula of your paint color - thank you!
great inspiration...omg love the space it creates!
I would fill every space with books, so pretty!
love the ladder too!
Thanks so much babe - i thought i had a lot of books but omg i need more. Lol
i have watched some of these built in billy, but why the base? is it just for the height or for other reason?
Probably bc her flooring was not totally level, & by building up a base it made sure that the bookcases were even without having to use shims. That’s only my guess though. I think building a base makes it easier to have a chunkier look which makes it look like a real built in too, bc you can add the moulding & base boards.
Gorgeous...absolutely love it!
awww thank you
Excellent work and very creative design!!. The color you selected really pops and brings the room to life. Great video and showing all the steps which is really helpful and inspirational!!...bravo and thanks for sharing!!!👏
I think I think it looks fantastic. I have two questions:
Thanks for your feedback and questions i appreciate you and hope this helps! ❤❤ Erika
What paint color did you use? Turned out beautiful.
looks very nice, well done.
Oh definitely will be less! Mine cost under $3k
@@PeonyandHoney
Don't forget the price of the sandwiches I hope you made for your dad. :)
Great video, awesome bookshelf!!
Well done. Don't give IKEA any credit. They did about 2% of the work here. Congrats on your new space.
Haha thank you so much
Amazing project nice work. We love Ikea hacks!
16:00 Does the 1x2 trim added to the shelves also give them more support?
Not really, I guess the general structure gets a bit sturdier if the whole molding is screwed onto each individual bookcase and not become as "floppy" over time as a singular Billy shelf might, but then again unless you put the books right on the edge so they will be supported by the 1x2 and the shelf itself it'll still go hanging if you don't just put 10 books and a vase on each shelf. If you want to support the shelf for higher duty I'd rather screw the extra 1x2 underneath the shelf alongside the middle if the longer side so it can't move downwards as much and then make sure you always position the wood so the center of what used to be the tree (rings getting smaller) is on the outside of where you screw it against, cuz otherwise it will just bulge over time just like the unsupported shelf would
@MaVyvy Thanks. I'm trying to build a bookshelf that will support very heavy books. Think of a law office bookshelf.
If you add a harder wood, like oak or maple, it will add quite a bit more support. The pine does add some, but it's a very soft wood.
Totally loving it!! Great job! I'm hoping to make one in a couple weeks but using the window door options.
i love the finish on the paint,
Doing this project right now and loving this video. Very useful. Thank you!
Beautiful! At any point during the process did you think you could have built the bookcase from scratch?
Oh you have a wonderful father and new best friend
