I love that after Pearl gets impaled, even when she knows she's taking an extended cloud nap, her immediate concern is telling Steven it's going to be okay.
17:23 It's not just the ribbon. Her tights and tutu are a different color too. Also, I just love how Steven cares for the gem like it's an egg while Pearl's regenerating. It's so cute.
Normally it doesn't take a long for a gem to regenerate but Pearl being the perfectionist that she is took this as an opportunity to better customize her form while Steven had to wait 2 weeks🤣
When I was in college, our theatre program did a production of Peter Pan, and I was one of the pirates. There's a part of the show where the pirates are tied up on the ship, while Peter and Captain Hook were sword fighting. Me and the guy I was "tied" to a barrel with, we were both big fans of Steven Universe. We were supposed to adlib cheers for the captain during this scene...so, during every performance, at the exact same time, we both shouted "PARRY, PARRY, THRUST!!!"
The time it takes for a Gem to regenerate is very relative, but it isn't usually this long. There's a very common theory that says the reason for Pearl to take two weeks to regenerate is because her gem was using her energy to keep the Holo-Pearl active. And a little fun fact: every time a Gem regenerates, they can choose to come back with a different form (usually changing their hairstyle or outfit, which are part of their bodies), and that change of form affects fusions too, so next time you see Opal, for exemple, she'll have a slightly different outfit. Also, Onion is a menace
Makes sense. She only reformed after holopearl was destroyed. Also, I think she might just generally take longer to reform because she's a perfectionist.
Fun not spoiler related fact: Apparently they changed pearls form, not just to show this part of gems, but the fact pearls old translucent tutu was hard to animate. So they made it a solid color instead for this form. Edit: Also just so your aware, it wouldn't take a gem as long as pearl to regenerate everytime.

Not sure if you noticed, but the show sometimes uses the "regenerating their physical forms" as an excuse to update how the gems look. So here we got a Pearl costume change.

Fun Fact: The fight choreography for Pearl vs Clone is copied directly from an episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena - a very famous and influential lesbian love story anime. This was an intentional homage that the creator of the show pointed out specifically given how much of an influence Utena was for them.

Have you seen Revolutionary Girl Utena? Several of the swordfighting animation shots in this episode are directly referencing shots from the Utena anime. She-Ra references the show as well. If you haven’t I would highly recommend it! (though perhaps with a small amount of research on its topics as it does delve into some heavy and potentially triggering subject matter) If you can handle its darker aspects and you like both She-Ra and Steven Universe I think you’ll end up really liking it. At the very least, I’d love to see you react to its opening sequence! It’s got sword fighting and it’s very, very gay.
Onion Trade: Mosco, do not question Onion. You will never understand and you will never get answers. We still don't understand. Steven the Sword Fighter: You got to the regeneration episode! This was the biggest mind blow in the fandom during the early season 1 days. It was just so unexpected. No one expected to see someone get stabbed with a sword and all she says is "Whoopsie daisy"!

They really just stabbed someone on screen, huh. Honestly what I love about the episode, is that it shows how affected by it Steven really is, despite it never being talked about directly. Two weeks later, and he's still having flashbacks when watching lonely blade (poor boy was on the verge of crying). (Also we get more angy steven and adorable steven-)

Love this show, and it's so awesome to see you react to it! As a representative for Gen Z, I can assure you that Onion's antics are beyond us all. In terms of how long it took Pearl to regenerate, the fact that her energy was being used to maintain the Holo-Pearl is definitely a factor but how long it took is also almost definitely also related to how particular she is. As you noticed, she had a different form when she came back and it is likely that she spent a lot of time not only to regain the energy to come back, but also took a lot of time "perfecting" her form.
I love that after Pearl gets impaled, even when she knows she's taking an extended cloud nap, her immediate concern is telling Steven it's going to be okay.

i've always headcanoned that the reason pearl took so long to regenerate is because her gem projection thing was still active and using her "power"
the sword fighting episode is truly so good and one of the most memorable early episodes of steven universe. it's the first instance i remember going "oh sh*t, this is getting real"
also something something revolutionary girl utena (highly recommend)
I love Greg i imagine he just trusts that the gems can take better care of him than a guy who lives in a van
Love that Mosco used "poofed" as a verb to describe what happened, and that's actually the term the show starts using later! :D
We’re almost to two of my favorite episodes of the show!
I love those two episodes too.
