As someone who has been deeply influenced by the TV adaptation of *Journey to the West* since childhood, my generation has long hoped for a game that could truly bring to life the hero Sun Wukong, who holds a special place in our hearts. Since August 2020, countless Chinese people like me have been eagerly awaiting the official release of *Black Myth: Wukong*. The *Journey to the West* is filled with classical Chinese language and ancient expressions, which can indeed pose some challenges for those unfamiliar with the story's background. However, I hope that this game will help more people understand the true essence of Chinese culture. I encourage everyone to support Game Science in this endeavor.

Chinese mythology mainly revolves around the struggle between Taoism and Buddhism. Sun Wukong's 72 transformations and other abilities were taught by Bodhi Patriarch of Taoism. Taoism used Wukong as a pawn to resist Buddhism, but was finally conquered by Tathagata Buddha. In order to consolidate his position, Tathagata Buddha used Wukong to purge some people in Buddhism, and thus the story of Journey to the West came into being. On the surface, it seems to be an inspirational story of Wukong's enlightenment, but in fact it is a power struggle among the upper class, alluding to the political darkness of China at that time. This is why Journey to the West can become one of the four great masterpieces of China.

Very inspired point of view! Respect! However, I personally think it is slightly hypered the relationship between Taosim and Buddism. Yes, they have clashes and conflicts here and there, but taosim even at its prime is not a national or common belief amtong the public. Unlike Buddsim where the rulers kept promoting and spread out across ancient China. Taosim is like a hidden gem with a much smaller population to practice and follow. I think Wukong is the perfect example to reflect the fusion of Taosim, Buddism, and Confucianism.

There is an often overlooked conversation between Laozi and Guanyin in chapter six of the original novel. Laozi claims that he is the founder of Buddhism and Guanyin didn’t refute. Some people in ancient China held such believe. Laozi who was the founder of Taoism, traveled to India and established Buddhism there, according to the legend. This is of course non sense but a reflection of Taoists animosity toward Buddhism at the time. Buddhism being a foreign religion, became dominate teaching after reaching China and marginalized the local Taoism.

An important point is: it's not just a struggle between Taoism and Buddhism, but also one of overcoming one's ego, passions and insatiable desires - the causes of human suffering that keep man in the cycle of Samsara.

Journey to the West is a great work, not only because of its rich and interesting plot. In fact, behind the scenes, it reflects the struggle between Buddhism and Taoism, as well as the author's satire on politics. In the original book, many monsters are actually pets or mounts of gods, and these gods "accidentally" let them fall from heaven to earth and control different areas, which is why when Sun Wukong defeats many monsters, there are often gods to take over the monsters. The main task of the four-person team is not actually to reach the end, but to reshape the division of forces on the journey. The author does not describe grand scenes such as wars, but indirectly reflects the competition between religions through the connection of small stories. Children and adults read, and different ages will have different understandings, which is why it has become a masterpiece.

The fact so many people are here because of Black Myth: Wukong just shows how impactful a game can be on people. It’s gotten so many people more interested in Chinese mythology, something that’s been overshadowed by other mythologies in the west. We all know Zeus, Odin, Ra, etc. People may have heard of Wukong, but now they’re learning his story and the other interesting characters around him and those engrained in Chinese and Asian culture.

There are many hidden meanings of the novel:
    1. it is indeed a superhero novel from 1500s in China.
    2. Wukong is a metaphor of the writer himself, the transition from a free willed and capable young man , strive hard to become a servant in the official administration system (unlike western blood based social structure, China had a channel for bottom level, especially scholars to climb the social structure )
    3. it was also a book full of sarcasm mocking the religious battle between the local religion Taois, the 2 imported religion Buddhism and Persian Zoroastrianism) and how those religions integrated.

      Anymore hidden meanings?

    • @zhijingchen4563

@Ttyumbra there are many hidden meanings up to audience's imaginations.
      E.g.
      1. The final part of the book introduced yellow eyebrow who is quite powerful, and he pretended to be Tathagata Buddha.
But he was actually a servant of Maitreya Buddha. And his final punishment was not death, but to be sent back to Maitreya. This leads to conspiracy about the hidden political fights within Buddhism.
      2. There are several example appears in later parts of the book that, powerful Yaoguai not being punished, due to their relationships with powerful figures in Taoism and Buddhism. But the Yaoguai without strong backgrounds gets harsh punishments for lighter crimes.
      3. Wukong calls Bajie " you dummies" "pig" in the early stage, prior to the encounter of the ”6 ear macaque" who appear to be the same looking as Wukong, who also seem to have learned the similar skills as Wukong. It raises question : who taught him the skills and why?
After the death of 6 ear macaque, Wukong in the book never called the piggie "dummy" anymore, but calling the name "bajie"
      4. The Tang Monk has 4 disciples : Wukong the wild monkey to whom Buddha wants show englightment, Waking(Bajie) the boar who used to be a god in Taoism system, and Wujing who used to be a servant in the celestial court(Taoism), plus a horse who was transformed from a dragon . Why did Jade emperor allows these 3 non Buddhism figures to join this journey along with Wukong, and whether was sent to spy.
      5. Why Jade emperor did not request stronger Taoism gods( from his own religion) to control the monkey, but turned to Buddha.
      6. Those above were inteprrtsted from conspiracy angle, and these are just a few of the many. But they are also a lot of analysis from traditional perspective that are worthy to learn. Such as : who is the Tang Monk, the endings of the 4 disciples , each Yaohuai's origins. Who saved the Tang Monk when he was a child.

    • @Lip-wg1xe

@@TtyumbraThe final metaphor is to satirise the government and the emperor. The satire of religion can be said directly, and there is no need to write a book implicitly. If a person speaks out his dissatisfaction with the government and the emperor, he and his family will be punished, so it is necessary to write this book full of metaphors to create characters corresponding to people and political struggles, power relations, and corruption in reality.

I just found that the Journey to the West and Lord of the Rings resemble to each other a lot. Both are a fellowship journey to somewhere, while one was to fetch Buddhist scriptures and the other was to destroy the ring. The most important characters in both books are the most vulnerable member in the team. Both of them are very kind-hearted, innocent, sometimes so naive that can even be easily tricked to turn against their own fellowships. Despite the other team members were so powerful that they could’ve made journeys a lot easier, they had to protect their most important character march to the destination.

The difference is, no matter how many times you read the Lord of the Rings, the good are still the good and the evil are still evil. In the Journey of the West, Gods are Gods when you read it at 10, Gods are Demons when you read it at 20, and Gods & Demons are all just Humans when you read it at 30. At the end of this Journey you do indeed achieve peace with the world, but not a magical world you imagined at 10.

Lord of the Rings is so focused on the sin of the greed for power and trying to destroy it while struggling with the temptation whilst Journey to the West is a story of enlightenment where you find yourself feeling like you've gained some wisdom by the end. An almost 500-year-old story inspired by the journey of an actual monk is hard to compare with one that is barely 100 years old

This is the best summary I’ve ever seen, and kept me glued to the television eagerly awaiting each new chapter. I also really liked the stylistic art that you chose to accompany the videos as it helps keep track of the content. After finishing the series and truly enjoying the videogame Black Myth: Wukong, it made me wonder if there are other pieces of Chinese literature that extend the story of Sun Wukong. Do you know if he appears elsewhere? I have heard there is a side story novel Xiyoubu about Wukong that takes place between chapters 61 and 62, and it would be great if you could do a summary of that novel as well. Is there anything else?

From birth to death, Sun Wukong never bowed to the gods and Buddhas in the heavens. It was Tang's unconditional compassion, kindness and integrity that tamed and transformed him. His life was an embodiment of resistance to power, and self discipline on a path of right-doings to achieve the greater good. He has been fighting all his life, therefore he was also called the Fighting Victory Buddha. Interestingly enough, there is a very profound Chinese religious outlook here since ancient times. Don’t believe in heavens, don’t believe in hell, don’t believe in God nor Buddha, believe in yourself. This is fully manifested on how modern Chinese carry themselves in many field and occasion. They are definitely the most hard working people in the world.

From the creation of the world by Pangu in the 4,000-year-old *Classic of Mountains and Seas* (*Shan Hai Jing*), to the deification of various gods in *Fengshen Yanyi* (*The Investiture of the Gods*), and to the journey to obtain the true scriptures through 81 trials in *Journey to the West*, there is a top-down lineage. After thousands of years of development, this system has integrated the philosophical thoughts of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

As much as I appreciate the summarized telling of the story there are very essential details that are not included. The Jingubang was a pillar that held the ocean together. The dragon King did not offer this to Sun Wukong. He simply took it and demanded more treasures. The dragon King called on his brothers and they each presented a different set of armour. They are the ones who reported Sun Wukong to the heavenly court. Still, overall great video.
