Meet the progenitor of all brash, impulsive, superpowerful anime characters! Sun Wukong, the Monkey King and Great Sage, was the most impulsive of them all!
"Wreaking havoc in heaven is so much fun it should be illegal!" -Monkey, probably
I might cover something else before continuing with part two of The Journey To The West. It's kind of a doozy, and I'm having a lot of trouble convincing myself to cut some parts out. Watch out for Don Quixote in the meantime.

Wukong is not that powerful In fact, the Jade Emperor didn't pay much attention to this monkey. In the original book, Wukong was defeated by the Jade Emperor's bodyguard after hitting the "Nantian Gate". The Jade Emperor knew about this and ordered the Buddha to solve the monkey. From the Buddha's dialogue I learned that the Jade Emperor was the superior leader of the Buddha. At that time, the three worlds were all ruled by the Jade Emperor, so he had a lot of things to do and didn't have time to pay attention to the monkeys.

    • @jacktorrance7735

@@user-qm7rf3qf6k well it's not just "bodyguards". it was an entire department of thunder deities while thunder is considered to be one of the ultimate means of destruction in Taoism myths. basically, it's an elite troop of professional army of heaven, not to mention the troop also include Heavenly Officer Wang, who was super popular and considered to be one of the strongest deities in combat at the time of the book.
and this heavenly special force couldn't defeat Wukong either - all the entire troop managed was to surround him in combat and stop him from getting away, the original text also described how all those thunder deities surrounding him were fought off by his stick and were "unable to get anywhere close to him".
also, Wukong actually hit Nantian Gate from inside the heaven palace, so it was not like he tried to get in the palace and was stopped outside the gate, but in fact it was him fighting all his way out of the palace and causing enormous rampage in the process. and the Jade Emperor did not just "know" about this, he was "alarmed""shocked" according to the description in original text.
regarding how he became this strong, let's not forget it only took him couple of years from knowing absolutely nothing about Taoist magical power, to achieving immortality and being able to beat essentially like 95% of deities. so well, overall speaking, I'd argue he actually just is that strong.

    • @rachelciel3330
      @rachelciel3330 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@@user-qm7rf3qf6k By bodyguards, you mean an entire army. The Jade Emperor just didn't leave his throne because he's cocky and the personified of 'emperor'. In China, it's shameful for emperor to use his own hands to solve a brute problem. So be the emperor or the guards, they didn't want the emperor to leave his throne. Even then, the entire army had troubles dealing with Sun Wukong, only when Erlang Shen arrived did they finally push back Sun Wukong and Erlang Shen was Jade Emperor's most powerful officer. The very officer that is known in legend as 'Greatest warrior god of heaven'.
Keep in mind, it needs an entire army to wear Sun Wukong down and Erlang Shen to come for them to have the possibility to beat back Sun Wukong. The most fearful thing is, Sun Wukong actually became stronger in his desperation to outmatch Erlang Shen in the battle Buddha was a 'guest' at that time, since there was a gathering in Jade Palace. Jade Emperor expressed his concern and Buddha went to 'see' Sun Wukong. You don't get it. Buddha is all about 'mercy to all creatures' so he went to see this so-called brute demon that created havoc in heaven to talk him down and let him be enlightened. Even if Jade Emperor didn't say anything, once Buddha knew there's a 'demon' wreaking havoc, he would go there anyway to preach. Sun Wukong didn't want to hear Buddha, at this point, he was cocky, an entire army was held back by him and he could go toe-to-toe against Heaven's greatest warrior (and Wukong was CONFIDENT af he could outmatch Erlang Shen if the battle continues).
Buddha basically said "Aight, words can't change you it seems, I'll use force." and trapped Sun Wukong under a mountain. At that moment, Wukong could see the vast difference in strength between him and Buddha and became humbled, but it was too late and Buddha just told him to 'wait here'.
And You can't take chinese dialogues literally. If you see any sort of "Such and such asked me to come" there's 70% chance it's not literally what happened and they just said that to give face to the host (usually 'such and such.) Since it is impolite for outsider to make a move in another's territory, so outsiders (guest, in Buddha's case) had to say ""Such and such mentioned this to me" or "I will act to share burdens with such and such" to first show respect to the host of the place as though saying "I have to make a move, but I will tell others I'm doing it for you so you don't lose prestige in your own territory." Manners are big things in China. In the book, both Jade Emperor and Buddha are 'entities' of the same status.
In fact, Journey to the West is said to be geared towards buddhism and shit on taoism since Sun Wukong, the important protag, could wipe the floor with so many heaven's officials.

The mentioning of him have 72 lifes is probably an instance where his junior fellow apprentice/underclassmen in their journey to the west, 猪八戒, commented on this ability, where he said "with such 72 transformations, he is now having 72 different lives." Which is a metaphor, saying that with this ability, he can turn into 72 different beings and live 72 different lifes. This shouldn't be taken literally as it was never mentioned again ever, in the novel.
In fact, his other fellow junior apprentice/underclassmen, 沙僧, also commented on this ability using the same format, saying that "with such 72 transformations, he is now having 72 different heads." Which he doesn't, and shouldn't be taken literally, it's actually a metaphor on how he can have 72 different faces and appearances.

It's not exactly what you described but there is lego monkie kid. Which is hilarious and takes place in modern day, wukong takes on a delivery boy from his favorite noodle place to be his aprentice basically. The animation (2D) is good but my favorite part is the voice acting. It's great and whoever writes the dialouge needs a raise. The whole cast just sounds like they have untreated adhd and drank 3 redbulls.
They kind of form a band in one episode (it's like in ninjago where the prize is a magic artifact they need) and we find out that wukong, that the San wukong has fucking stage fright. So he just kinda stands there with a fucking gong looking like he's about to combust and the characters are like your kidding us right you're joking you're going to say gotcha any second and pull of a sick guitar solo and even wukong himself is like I know it doesn't make any fucking sense just go along with it and that alone made that episode funny to me. There's a lot of funny moments with him like when hes taking pupblic transport and wearing his own merch not to mention playing a game about himself and watching movies he actually acted in. There's just so much little stuff that fucking hilarious but I don't really wanna spoiler. And man this comment got looooooong.

Also, if you don’t know, Sun Wukong got cooked in the Furnace of the Eight sigil, the smoke of the Furnace made him gain the ability to look through any disguise easily, one can speculate that the “layer” became that.

You know, rewatching this I've come to the conclusion that they should've just made Wukong train Heaven's army. Like he easily whooped their best soldiers, and he was technically a king, so he should've been able teach Heaven's army to be able to handle problems like him. It would've kept him distracted, entertained, and NOT in a position where he could've become more immortal. It probably could've even forced him to learn to be more patient and other very useful things that would've mellowed him out.

You can't tame neutral chaos, it will always seek more.
One of the points I think it was trying to get across to people seeing as how it's an ode to Buddhist ideals, constant insatiable desires vs. striving for more emptiness at least when it comes to the physical world and it's goals is what causes people to become this chaotic, irresponsible, reckless, carless and destructive, and it's a powerful impulse desire, one only a person can decide within themselves to control, hence why the deities couldn't control it only stop it for a time, because it was up to the person (idealized as the Buddha and it's higher thinking the guy who pushed wukong back for awhile and the deities themselves in some fashion explaining the complexity of the humans inward self) to let go of these desires and to bury them back into the place from where they're born (this is why sun wukong was born from a rock and at the end was in a manner of speaking killed or trapped or subdued under/inside a rock, parallel themes).

Sun Wukong is my all time favorite fictional and mythological figure. I grew up with the Chinese classic Journey to The West 1986 show. Everything about him and his story is amazing! I’m glad you guys have made a whole series to summarize his story!
I love looking into Sun Wukong lore and how he’s made such a big impact on the general media. He inspired Shounen anime/manga troupes and abilities, such as Dragon Ball’s Son Goku with his power pole and nimbus, Luffy’s silly yet headstrong personality, and Naruto’s shadow clone jutsu. The most well known being Son Goku, who was heavily inspired by him. From Goku’s saiyan/ape side, to his urge to fight strong opponents, he still has some aspects/influence from Sun Wukong that remains. His name, Son Goku, is literally just the Japanese translation of Sun Wukong, and the general story, or more specifically characters, was meant to somewhat resemble or reflect The Journey To The West, just like how Oolong closely resembles Pigsy and how Tien has a third eye like Erleng. Dragon Ball went to inspire a lot of future animes and is seen to be one of the most influential animes of all time due to that. I’m glad to see how Sun Wukong technically made a pretty decent mark on today’s anime culture and community, but most people don’t even know that or don’t even know who he is in general.
Recently it seems that he’s become more popular, even in the West. I think your channel: Overly Sarcastic Productions, and your video series retelling/summarizing Journey To The West and Sun Wukong really got people talking about him. In general he’s become way more relevant than before.
    =================================
I would like to list all the recent things that he’s been included in!:
    • There’s the new game coming out called Black Myth: Wukong
    • The Lego animated series called Lego Monkie Kid, and there is more seasons to come. (As pointed out to me by @n0t stxrrzz !!, the 4th Season recently came out but only in China for now) Now the 4th Season Special is out!
    • God of Highschool’s Jin Mori is a version of Sun Wukong. The Webtoon series ended sadly, but it was a great story!
    • Death Battle’s recent video with Sun Wukong vs. Hercules
    • DC releasing a new superhero based on Sun Wukong/the monkey king called The Monkey Prince
    • There is a Netflix original series based on the Journey to The West called “The New Legends of Monkey” that was released in 2018. It only has 2 seasons
    • Smash Legends released Wukong as a new legend
    • A game called Black Desert has a new upcoming character/class called Wukong with his abilities. Sadly I think it’s exclusive to China only.
    • The short fan animation film called Legend: A Dragon Ball Tale has Goku transforming into a super saiyan that reflects Sun Wukong and is referred to as “the savior of heaven.”
    • Soul Knight has a New Years Spring Festival Seasonal Event that features new character skins based on Journey to The West characters. The Sun Wukong skin is actually the Six Eared Macaque and has a cool detail to distinguish it. The cloning ability for the character is changed to where a monkey pops out and transforms into a clone of one of the other main characters.
    • Marvel/Disney followed DC in their footsteps and made a show called “American Born Asian” that has Sun Wukong in the show. I haven’t watched it yet, but I think the main character gets Sun Wukong’s staff, and maybe even his power. Kind of like MK in Lego Monkie Kid.
    • The year of the monkey is coming in 2028. I’m hoping Brawl Stars creates a character or at least a skin or pin that’s related to Sun Wukong!
He’s just everywhere now, and I think your channel had a big part in all of that.
    =================================
I love seeing people being introduced and more interested in Sun Wukong. It’s good to see that he truly lives up to the tales of him gaining multiple immortalities, as it seems his tale and legend never truly dies and sometimes spikes in popularity.
I learned a lot from your Journey to The West series. Your story telling style is so unique and entertaining, and your drawings/animatics are so cool! The quality of these videos are like gold! It must take a lot to make these videos, so you deserve to take breaks and take as much time as you need. I’m willing to wait for however long it takes because it’s completely worth it! Thank you for giving me more insight on him! I appreciate everything you guys do!
    _____________________________________
[Edit]: I’m just going to keep updating the list of Sun Wukong being featured or referenced in things or just being more relevant in general. It will be listed inside the box that has equal signs boxing it in. I’m glad to see that his popularity is still growing even past the initial point of when I made this comment! I just want to put it into perspective of how much your videos have impacted Sun Wukong’s popularity and how awesome that is. I am truly thankful for all that you do and have done!
    ------------------------
[Edit]: I’ve changed the list into a bulleted list so it’s easier to see each individual thing. I also added new things to the list and taken some input from the replies of this comment.
    --------------------
[Edit]: I’ve made a separate comment to list all of the recent Sun Wukong related things. This comment is getting too long, and I don’t expect everyone to be able to read all of this 😅 I will still continue to add to this one in case people are just more used to this list, but just know that there is a shorter one out there.

OK I cannot get over how Sun Wukong is just living his best live reacting to everything everyone else does. Like, the spontaneous existential crisis is the impetus for everything, its bc of that that he leaves and comes back strong enough to defeat the demon king, which leads to the need for an army and a weapon which leads to the dragons fearing him which leads to the complaints which leads to them trying to get him under control in the least well thought out way possible which leads via reactions and bad decisions on both parts to a literal war with heaven. He didn't do anything to get himself kidnapped to the afterlife but he turned it into an advantage when it happened to him, just like how the Heavenly Beauocracys attempts to control him backfired and made him stronger and more disdainful of them. Ans all of that is the reason he reached the point of wanting to overthrow the Jade Emperor, he was excited to be invited to heaven at first! It's just...so hilarious and interesting how everyone reacting to him and him reacting to their reactions escalated so much!
Like, I've heard of the Monkey King and JTTW before but a TV show got me interested and the fandom recommended this series to me, so seeing the charactwr that i only really know from that one depiction in the show, which is a frigging kids action comedy, and finding out that the irresponsible, largely self-centered, goofily delightful disaster is believably the same character from this ancient text is freaking incredible 🤣

      2:39 He's immortal
3:03 However many times Wukong gets immortal, times it by 72, so is now 72 times immortal
      4:51 Now he's 144 times immortal
7:05 He's started eating the peaches...
7:11 ...and he is now 259344 times immortal (3600 peaches, each giving immortality times 72 as each time he gains immortality, the 72 earthly transformations mean that you have to kill the immortal Wukong 72 times, plus the 144 ways he is already immortal)
7:35 He's now 259416+ times immortal. I only added 72 as it never says HOW much of the wine can make you immortal, but the plus sign is to show that if, let's say, the amount of juice a peach of immortality has makes you immortal just 1 time, the fact that Wukong stole a LOT of wine (I'm estimating hundreds of thousands of big ceramic vases of the wine or more) it may have made him immortal by more than 259416 ways. How ever, it is said that Wukong gets easily drunk and just one cup of wine can make him drunk, so it could just be 259416 ways Wukong is currently immortal.
7:59 Now Wukong is 1339416+ ways immortal. Let's say that each gourd holds 750 grams worth of pills. Each of those pills weighs around 0.25g (taken from the average weight of Japanese pills as I couldn't find China's average pill weight) 750/0.25=3000. From 7:53 there are at least 5 gourds (there are most likely WAY more). 3000*5=15000 pills at LEAST in all, giving Wukong 15000 ways he becomes immortal as each pill grants immortality. Times those 15000 ways by 72 (the earthly transformations thing), he gets 1080000 as his total amount of ways he gets immortal for at LEAST eating 5 gourds worth of pills. Plus that onto his already ludicrously numerous ways he is already immortal, you get 1339416+ ways Wukong is immortal
10:04 Now get the 1339416 ways Wukong is already immortal, and from here on out times any way he now gets immortal by 72 and then by at least 3000 or so as in Chinese mythology that is roughly how long an immortal being's life is length by when a new method of immortality is obtained, and Wukong has now achieved the achievement immortal on immortal, so Wukong is now 1555416 times immortal. No wait-
He is now 401846000+ immortal. Times his previous count by 3000 before you add this count. Also he now has red eyes
Later video: Wukong has achieved full TRUE immortality, so the answer to how many ways Wukong attains immortality, is YES

Anyone else find it fascinating that both Son Goku (who is based off the Monkey King) and Monkey D. Luffy (who is an homage to Goku) have both now developed divine attributes that make them ridiculously powerful? Goku’s now has divine ki and his Ultra Instinct seems like something a character in Journey to the West would pull off through meditation or divine shenanigans. And Luffy’s latest transformation gives him abilities and hijinks that seem very reminiscent of the original Monkey King’s antics.
I just love how both of these characters have kind of “returned to the source” in a sense by both achieving divine attributes in different ways. Just seems kind of right, you know?

This is why "The Journey to the West" is powerful pro-Confucian propaganda too--it makes the Jade King, one of the Confucian demi-gods, into the ultimate reasonable good guy. Whereas in Greek and Roman mythology the god-kings were sort of assholes, the god-kings in Chinese mythology never were assholes. It was always the human kings (or wild monkey kings) who destroyed the perfection of creation.

@@Luboman411 lmao this is just so not true. This book was banned in China long ago (in Ming dynasty when it was written around jiajing or wanli either way a lot of political retardation most significantly the great debate on naming ancestors, comparable to the modern society) because it was against Confucian ideas. The heaven king and his palace was the embodiment of all Confucian ideologies, and the author of the book mocks that the society by getting sun wukong to defeat them. Initially, to prevent wukong from defeating him, the heaven king bureaucratically offers him a role as the master of the horse of the heavens. Wukong was very happy to have this role, but after discovering that the role held no real power and was a fake title, (the book mocks the governing body, in that most officials do nothing and many roles were only in titles) he became angry and started rampaging around the heaven palace. The author further suggests that the entire government was useless by suggesting that a low ranking monkey can defeat everyone in the heaven palace to an extent that the heaven emperor had to call in Buddha to help, a diety from a different religion. The book insinuates that the government suppresses the people by using caging methods (trapping wukong in a pot) and even invoking Buddha to crush him under a mountain. Furthermore, the book advocates a carefree lifestyle as wukong as lived. The style of management was criticized because it implies that the society is like the heaven palace where everyone suppressed wukong for their own benefits, where as the master of wukong xuanzang and Buddha guided him, though with discipline and control, but also allowed him to venture and face troubles so that he knows troubles and stay away from them. The Buddha and wukong basically depicts an ideal political system for the author where Buddha is the government and wukong is the governed.
