Some more advice from a successful solo who's also terrible at gun play: 1) Keep a paper and pen handy, or a text document. I write down every square that a heli goes down in, squares of big bases or bases whos players are giving you a hard time. This is helpful for when you feel like simply roaming for pvp or decayed bases, as you'll know where some stuff is. I used to write down squares I was downed in, but with the new map death icon, saves some space. Also good if you plan on staying on a server for a while to keep a list of trustworthy and not players. I know people often change their steam names, but this has paid dividends when looking for certain items to trade for. 2) Practice gunplay on aiming servers. It really does help, even if you're bad at it, to have some understanding of each gun's recoil, and it'll help you find one you prefer. 3) Doorcamping works. People will talk shit, but all is fair in love, war, and Rust. If you've been doorcamped before, gotta adjust your base build to take that option away. 4) Get good at farming good. @Willjum mentioned the snow biome as the best for nodes. This is true, but on every map, in every biome, there spots where nodes are far more likely to spawn. I'd write those down for the wipe. As for scrap, nothing beats the ocean still. I like the kayak, and if anything this has made the ocean waaaaay less populated early on in wipe, with the only other boats I've seen being a duo going to rig, and a group that took the rhib off cargo. Don't forget the Outpost's resource exchange vendor. 4500 stone=15000 wood. Don't forget to tap your jackhammer to save durability. 5) Plant farming is still very profitable. You can still do the Cloth to scrap vendor. It's been nerfed, but as a solo you often have more cloth than to know what to do with. Tea is so incredibly useful that I'm shocked more solos don't invest a bit of base space for it. Not only are the buffs great at saving you time, you can sell the tea for a decent prices, be it sulfur or scrap. 6) If you do have big clan neighbors, talking can really help. On the car update, I made a small garage, and a 6 person clan happened to move in within sniper range. I got killed twice coming over, but eventually I got a word in to say, hey I'm your little solo neighbor, just farming some BPs, I don't keep more than TC and I'm not planning on getting above tier 2, so could y'all play nice for me maybe? Not only did this work, I joined them for the next wipe, was good fun. Dialogue and politeness can get you far more in this game than steady aim sometimes. Solo is all about balancing risk vs reward. I mean the whole game is, but as a solo, your risk is typically everything you're carrying, and maybe even your vehicle or horse. So the name of the game is to limit that risk while maximizing that reward. @Willjum really nailed it with the "return every 10-15 minutes to drop" rule. The logic is, if you make 6 trips with smaller amounts of items, and you die once, you've lost 1/6 of what you were doing. If you do 3 trips full inventory, and die once, you've lost 1/3, and you're pissed because it was full inventory. Never assume you'll just win it back, because it's just you. Play smart and you'll at least carve yourself out a spot. LOVE the content Willjum, keep it coming!
My question is, how do people hop in expecting to get jackhammer, I have played for a while and hardly ever come across one, people make it seem so easy to get or I’m just missing something.
One tip that I use. When farming wood, don't cut the tree all the way down. Get 4 or 5 trees on the verge of falling. Basically one or two hits away. Then when you are ready take them all down and dip. When a tree falls it makes a lot of noise, so this eliminates the odds of someone hearing and countering you.

I recently got back into Rust and decided to try and live out a peaceful life in a snowy mountain as a hermit. Then I watched this video and it affirmed all the reasons for where I put my base. In the snow away from spawns, not near any neighbors or roads, and a couple monuments nearby that I can go through every couple hours.
I think you are actually my favorite Rust youtuber now. I'm a quiet person, so it's nice to not hear people screaming about loot and raging over deaths
Haven’t gotten back into rust since legacy, the game is intimidatingly different. This solo strategy and chill mindset you’ve shown is by far the most motivated I’ve been to get going again. Awesome video. Thank you
i know u did this video some time ago but this strategy really helped me. playing solo is my favorite way to play rust and i was a mediocre player, not always leaving primitive and usually being unsatisfied with my wipe. but with a little bit of experience and this strat u teached ive been getting some really good solo wipes and now im always at tier two guns sometimes even end game. thank you willjum!!

Willjum is a great and relaxing rust person that i can just listen and watch his videos as well as learn from them. He's a overall great TH-camr and a awesome personality.
Just got my external harddrive so I have the storage space for Rust and can restart my solo adventures. The more chill farm episode you had a while back was good inspiration for a more relaxed experience.
I'm a little bit late here, but thank you for the solo guide. I'm playing Rust on a slower PC, so it takes about an hour to load, and sometimes I experience FPS drops which cause me to get killed. I don't know why, but I still really enjoy playing Rust, even if I lose everything or have to wait for many hours when my game crashes. I also enjoy watching Rust movies and videos, such as yours. I like your editing style, music, humor, and gameplay. In the future, when I can buy a better PC to play Rust, I will remember how I watched your videos and tried to play the game on 40-50 FPS :D
I have been a solo player for a couple hundred hours now, and I find immense joy in this playstyle. The biggest part of it is just as you say: one must be able to let go of your loot and accept loss. Getting sniped at random is Rust. Getting jumped by two dudes while smacking barrels is Rust. Winning a battle only to get murked by a bear while healing is Rust. This game is losing often, but when you prevail it is truly wondrous.
hey Willjum I've been playing rust for about 3-4 years now on and off playing with only about 800 hours, but i really took this video to heart almost every wipe i play, i play as a Solo and although I'm super crap at pvp i never get angry or toxic, this video really shared my experience with rust, so thanks bro and hope you have a great next wipe.
“I get a lot of sponsors but don't sponsor unless I enjoy it, that being said todays sponsor is raid shadow legends” never heard more bullshit in my life
omg u have no idea how long i struggled being grubbed constantly thank you so much i have about 400 hrs and im always solo because every person i meet just plays one day then never talks again and it is rough playing solo but tysm bro
Great video and great advice! I play solo as well. One thing ive been doing lately that i think helps is similar to your idea of farming after losing a fight. If i take a a big L sometimes ill just spawn in naked randomly and just roam around a bit. Helps you see more of the map and you may even find a decayed base or a good raid target. Keep up the good work Wiljum!
That was the most wholesome sponsor shoutout.💛 I usually just ignore those parts in Rust videos. Just the fact that you included your level and the time spent. Shows sometimes it’s not all about the money.
It's included in the script Raid gives to everyone they sponsor. It's about nothing but the money lol, Raid is a disguised slot machine that persuades children into constant micro-transactions. Nobody promoting it actually likes it. Raid dumps half it's profits back into marketing, paying a shit ton of money to their sponsors. They say they like it because that's the only way they'll get the massive amounts of money they're offered. I'm not saying this guy's worse for doing it for that reason, because Raid's the real problem. I'm just saying be careful not to fall for their extremely shady marketing and business practices. Not everything Is what it seems to be. :)
One thing that’s helped me a lot for being a solo if I start out on a new server with no bp’s I’ll try to build next to a harbor. Low grade/crude is insane for getting down plenty of furnaces to upgrade, and it’s a tier 1 monument so no one really goes there much. Can get some pretty decent scrap as well to make your way down the tier lists
O No not Raid Shadow Legends :(....... ......But But But ./sigh......you the only chill Rust player out there... so I I I..Gratz on the sponsor..You earned it.
i understand youre disappointment man, but bare in mind i genuinely enjoy the game and have been playing for over a year, not to mention raid actually support creators, unlike yt who barely pay anything, raid allows creators to keep doing youtube
Thank you so much for this video! I've been following for a while now and finally took the plunge to get the game on my PC. I've died so much, but your videos have given me so many tips and tricks that I am rarely frustrated at the losses! Great vibes, man!
I’ve been watching rust for 4 years now and i finally got a pc about a week and a half ago and I’ve been playing rust non stop since then and this honestly helped me out a lot Bc it makes me so mad when I die especially when I have a inventory of loot. Now I’ll start dropping loot off rather than running around with it and build farther from spawn points in the beginning & I’m gonna try to keep a positive mindset all the time but it is hard on such a toxic game 😂
Hey man another great idea is to turn off global chat and turn off voices I've been playing rust since 2013 and ive had to take so many breaks due to the toxicity tilting me but the second everybody is muted it doesnt feel that toxic it just feels like the way rust was ment to be played without the community being shit
I started playing Rust because o videos on youtube. But the game isn't very friendly with new players and I started to get frustrated. I was about to uninstall the game and then I found your channel. Now I'm really hyped to try again and learn to play solo. This video is so diferent from the other "guides" on youtube and it helped me so much, and for this I thank you. You deserve your channel's growth, keep up the good work.
Toxic feedback loop is the worst part of Rust. I wish people would remember "Is only game, why you have to be mad?" when they either win or lose fights. Poor losing is understandable, but sore winners are the absolute worst. Example: Wipe day, I attempted a play on a dude farming, he had a metal pick and I hadn't bped it yet, plus maybe some farm. Didn't see he already had a revolver, hit my crossie shot but he won. I say, from the ground, "gg, heard the pick and tried the play but you got me, nice shooting." He comes up and tells me my mother is a whore, I deserved to fucking die, and he hated me, and wished I died behind my computer as well. Now, I'm 32, so that shit doesn't usually phase me, but I respawn and just kinda sat in my base for a minute to reflect on that poor guy's attitude. Like, dude won, got a compliment from the guy he beat, and that was his response? Now I'm sure I'll get "get gud" and "welcome to rust" replies, but was any of that necessary? But, in this game, you gotta pick that bag, spawn back in, and get back to it. Welcome to Rust.
@@SturmVogel96 Oh I meant in no way to imply this is generational. I've heard men older than me completely berate children over stupid game stuff. Again, "Is only game, why you have to be mad?" really needs to be a firm gamer creed.
@@finn4kill429 To each his own, however I didn't cry. I was kind and complimentary, and he was a dick. You're allowed to be a dick, but it typically doesn't engender you any friends.
@DinkleDigeroo I fundamentally disagree. People get toxic for entirely circumstantial reasons that they personally could have chosen to act differently/evolve with the meta. As for losing boats, the whole point is to build a kayak. You can do rig easily with a kayak. Yes cargo costs 200 for a motorboat now, but considering what you can get in drops, not bad. Also it has a rhib on the back that you then keep or use to get your boat back. It's always been harder as a solo. As for scrap, grow some cloth, they literally added farm stuff, just sell it. Tea sells like crazy. Cloth, while nerfed, sells good too. Gotta evolve with the meta. I know it sucks sometimes, but that's life with a game that changes. Try being a longtime Magic the Gathering player when they added the planeswalker cardtype. You roll with the punches or you get knocked down.
3 years later and after 50 hours of solo accomplishing nothing, getting killed all the time, I finally managed to built and run a 2-1 base and got close to a furnace. all because of the tip to set a goal every time I go out and return every 15'. Thanks Willjum, love your content
Yo dude u like really blow my mind with ur content and ur mindset I realy appreciate that u take the time out of ur day to do this shit and make these vids and I hope u go far with the TH-cam thing
Damnnn its insane how you changed in that time. I only knew New Videos from you. But im pretty sure youve always been like that and just got more confident with speaking into a mic. Love your channel!
On point advices, and I really appreciated the part about "rage quitting" bit. I played with a lot of different people and when your partner rage quit and leave you hanging to recover, it really takes a toll to motivation and often made me go back to solo play. Maybe the older players just have more patience I suppose. :)
I am New to Pc, New to Rust and New to streaming on Twitch. Im looking for advice, strategies, tips/tricks etc on Rust, but mainly advice on Soloing in Rust. I will say this is one of the best Guides ive seen for Rust as a Solo. You were 100% honest and told it how it was. The first two times i played Rust, i did everything you pointed out about players going the wrong way about their gameplay, i quit both times. I did what you said and offered as advice and it went 100% different. Thanks yo!
There's one big factor you haven't included in your video: diversification. Building multiple small bases so you don't have to worry about upkeep is critical for successful solo plays. Door camped in one base? Spawn somewhere else. Got raided overnight? No big deal, I've got five more.
Thank you sir . Of all the videos and all the faqs, you sir, have enlightened me the most . Every morning all my shit is gone and I delete the game just to redownload it in a few hours . I shall follow this multi base path 🤙🏻
Good advice Willjum. Playing with a chill mindset and a purpose helps a lot. I've been adapting my gameplay to be more like yours and have been enjoying Rust more now. Thank you.
"There are no spawn points in the snow" I've been playing console version and this is NOT true. I've spawned in the cold and snow many times, it's very annoying because I had no resources to stay warm and there was no food. I also disagree with woods. If you are a NEW player building your first base the woods are great because there's lots of resources around. You just have to look out for anyone with guns and try to avoid building too close to other bases.
I would agree, console rusts smaller map size makes it hard to keep your base unknown so any concealment helps, plus door campers are pretty easy to deal with from my experience.
@@liammyers5903 well dont play console version of it sell ur outdated console and buy a pc and theres way more advantages if you need a pc for uni work aswell and if u wanna make videos

WillyJ, I've followed your channel for quite some time now. I play solo only, I'm a bit of a hoarder and hate when groups wipe my base and take my treasure. Seeing you progress from a shadow warrior o a pvp Chad gives me hope I can get up to a semblance of your level. Keep on posting your adventures, love your vids, love the music!
This is gold thank you for caring enough to explain the philosophy and yes I found it different from most. Thank s again. First time player of Rust and definitely needed those tips as I already raged quit from the server...lol and was called a neuro divergent for it lmao.

i know u did this video some time ago but this strategy really helped me. playing solo is my favorite way to play rust and i was a mediocre player, not always leaving primitive and usually being unsatisfied with my wipe. but with a little bit of experience and this strat u teached ive been getting some really good solo wipes and now im always at tier two guns sometimes even end game. thank you willjum!!
Additional tip: When running to your start location, place some bags along the way so you don't have to run the whole way again if killed.
I don't know why, but every server I've been on finding hemp is near impossible. I'm lucky if I get enough just to make the one bag for my base.
"As a solo, constant surveillance is critical" now I know why im so paranoid IRL LOL
As a new console player, this guide was incredibly informative.
Both for strategy and mindset.

So glad to see your channel growing up man! I've been watching for a while.
this was the best guide ive watched, the 10-15 minute rule and especially the mentality and mindset portion of the video, that really spoke to me
I literally just discovered you yesterday, and you are already one of my favorite TH-camrs.
Thx for the guide , Unfortunately i don 't play rust but i am enjoying with your vids

You deserve your channel's growth, keep up the good work.

new to rust, finding myself constantly back on your channel. subbed!
You're just right. I'm 23 and i see a lack of respect in the young generation. It's sad that ppl get mad over a video game....
@@SturmVogel96 Oh I meant in no way to imply this is generational. I've heard men older than me completely berate children over stupid game stuff. Again, "Is only game, why you have to be mad?" really needs to be a firm gamer creed.
I'm the sore winner here; I do it cuz it's funny to see people like u cry lmao
Man this guys voice is so therapeutic. For the lowly solo rust player who's just been raided this vid really helped.

Yo dude u like really blow my mind with ur content and ur mindset I realy appreciate that u take the time out of ur day to do this shit and make these vids and I hope u go far with the TH-cam thing

Ok now I see why your always talking about those good vibes. It really is mental and key to not getting mad and quiting.
