word of advice: don't buy the game if you enjoy this aesthetic. willjum is incredibly good at the game, most rustubers are, and they make it look easy. Most of the time you experience will be: spawn in > start farming anything > get maybe enough for a TC > get oneshot or just sprayed down before you can react by a fullkit AK when you're literally just a naked with 2k wood and a stone hatchet. repeat 10 times before you are able to place the TC. the good moments are great, of course, winning a fight feels incredibly good and once you start getting better you win more, but the first 400 hours are just naked hell with no escape except pushing through. it does sour the experience of watching these videos at lot, seeing the guy just winning. he deserves it of course, but you wouldn't win against the tunnel rats, and the past hour is just gone to some kid with a pump shotgun.
I've been watching your videos for a long time and i love your vibe. I work overnights and when I'm having a stressful night i pull up a wiljum video and just listen to it on my head phones. You have a very calming voice and i could totally see you reading audio books or something. Keep up the 🔥 content bro!
I just look at outpost and this particular strat of the metal detector as another avenue to farm. Some people just aren’t good at PvP or would just rather not participate in it as much. Or could just be so down bad (base is destroyed, motivation shot, no help, solo player, etc…) that doing outpost at least gives you a shot to have another start. It’s powerful yes, but it’s one facet of a multitude of ways to get resources.
Bro this is shit i tried and it's a waste of time yes its safe but its a waste of time.. you are better of running roads, doing DOME or out in the water or just dont play on high pop servers . 43:23 I love this whole sequence where you are staking out the Zerg, must’ve been extremely fun to spectate that battle, those heli’s were nuts for divebombing that fortress 😂.
I am not very experienced in rust but been watching WIlljum vids for a long time, what are all those structures outside of the zerg base? All the triangle rooms on top of one frame and foundation? I was curious and looking for a comment about this fight. Is that just a million external TC's or what? I loved watching this segment as well.
@@piercemccauley7079 Gotcha. I spent some time doing my own research on it and saw that a lot of times people create them so that raiders do not have cover behind outer TC structures. They are technically weaker to softside but for large groups worth the cost is what I read.
The ending was a nail biter. I legit felt your pain in the end. I was routing for you and you were going off. But if theres one thing willjum has taught me, its, theres always one more.

I believe the advantages of the metal detector - and even more, of Outpost - are just a way to play. That's, I believe, the great thing about Rust: there is no "way you are supposed to play", as you can play just as you like. There are those who choose a server based on their style (more or less populated, vanilla or modded, and so on), as there are players who prefer PvP over other things, while others are more farmers than anything else. At the end of the day, as long as we have fun, isn't it all right? And about the videos, dear Willjum: I love your content and I must say, one of things I like the most is the variety. So, seeing you purchase a SAR with crude oil is not only "not bad", but it's actually appreciated, for a change. Keep on being great, thank you for this video too!
I think the implication was that the Outpost meta is too powerful compared to the other methods of play, (ie. farming, building, etc). If you can buy guns day 2 of wipe, then the "survival" style of play just becomes irrelevant if you want to keep up with the overall server's peak level of progression. Survival-style play seems to only be more efficient at the very beginning of wipe. Once the player shops start opening, the most efficient strategy becomes "buy things at Outpost". Even moreso now with the metal detector, which gives you tradable/sellable items for free.
@@michaels.3709Yes, right. Then again, what’s the “end game” in an official, vanilla server? Some play to reach AK, and that’s what they do, one way or the other. Others want to raid, and although you can do it also thanks to purchases from Outpost, it’s then up to you to manage it and actually win the raid, right? It’s also a matter of adapting to what the game has to offer. Sure Outpost is safe and powerful, but then what about all the roof campers just outside of Outpost? Isn’t that a more serious threat than Outpost perks themselves? Thing is: whenever parts of the game are nerfed, it means forcing players to behave otherwise. On the other hand, having more possibilities enhances the chances of playing with our own style :) just an opinion
@@yulaiho43 I get that whatever a game offers should, at the end of the day, be fun. Whether it's grinding for an AK or buying one from outpost to do a few hours of raids, it should be the player's choice. To be clear, I've never played Rust. I've only seen it played, so there's a good chance I've missed something. But, from what I understand, I think some game mechanics work against each other here. If someone wanted to jump into a server and grind an AK full-kit from scratch (ie. play through the crafting and research progression), it'll be a very different play experience on wipe-day than on day 2 or beyond. Once the majority of the server has AKs, that's the dominant meta and anyone without one essentially is playing a stealth game, (or gets to build out in the middle of nowhere). Without Outpost, you'd need to get an AK from a player via pvp, get lucky enough to find one, or get far enough along the game progression to make one. That would slow down the rate at which AKs entered the hands of average players (ie. those who aren't on 24/7 from the start of wipe for the grind, or can't 1v1 an AK geared player with a crossbow and a dream). But with players able to buy AKs at outpost, essentially anyone with scrap can get one. This speeds up the server-wide adoption of the AK ("endgame") meta. If this happens within *a day or two*, then your server is "over" within a day or two, since actual crafting/research progression is considerably more expensive than just buying. Sure, you can still go out and grind for the endgame, but you can't grub for resources with prim weapons when half the server is running AK full-kits. It's just not the same game. Now the metal detector makes it so you can get AK without even leaving the safe zone, which feels like it will only speed-up the AK meta adoption further. I don't know the economy on a typical official Rust server to say for sure, but it almost feels like, unless you join minutes after wipe, the new, best strat is just: 1) go to outpost, 2) get a metal detector, 3) get AK full-kit. Even if you want to work on other progression, this has to happen first in order to defend yourself from other players. This just feels like... not much of the game is left after a day or two from wipe. It just becomes a PvP FFA FPS with crafting and base-building elements. Again, just an outsider's opinion. But from a game design standpoint, it feels like it's making the expiration on the crafting/progression on each server even shorter. tl;dr - Metal detector makes getting AK easier, so everyone has AKs faster, which means everyone needs AKs faster as an entry to play.
@@michaels.3709thank you for your detailed answer! My perspective is the one of a “good Rust player wannabe”: I play the game and I have fun, but in my own way. I suck at PvP, so Outpost and the metal detector give me a chance to get an AK. Which is kind of useless, as I’d lose it quickly by dying during a PvP skirmish :) but it’s fine, at least I would have got one and tried to use it. And in the process, by maybe buying it at Outpost, I would have “helped” the economy of that server; and helped a player (good at PvP) getting one from my corpse. Sure, if I spent some time safely “grinding” scrap in the Safe Zone, got an AK, and got killed by a roof camper just outside of Outpost, I wouldn’t be too happy :)
@@yulaiho43 Thanks for your perspective as well! It's always great to see some well thought-out replies! I think I see your point now. I don't really play FPS games, and so I'd probably be happily grinding right there with you in Outpost if I were to ever play. Usually I play solo crafting/survival or resource management games, and those usually have some kind of exploration aspect to them where it's actively advantageous to explore the map and build your base/bases in unique areas. To have a game where you have such an interesting game progression and aesthetic, while also having some admittedly pretty powerful automation options (with the pipes and furnaces), essentially "happen" right around Outpost, and reach "peak progression" with 24-48 hours makes it feel like there's a lot of space for improvement. "Revy fights between solo farmers mining sulfur for an auto-sachel shop" is a thing that's only going to happen on, or shortly after, wipe day. Either because by that point they will both be AK, some huge clan already has sachels on the shop by then, or both solos stopped playing once the AK full-kit clans pushed them off the server. You can confirm or deny if this is the case, but it really feels like the experience of playing on official servers get pretty "same-y" really quickly. And I think the presence of Outpost and now the metal detector probably only makes the "sameness" happen faster. Maybe I'm wrong and it *is* possible to play on official Rust, several days after wipe, and have a unique play experience as a solo or a part of a small crew. But to me it really feels like you need to be part of a huge clan to play in interesting (and likely non-optimal) ways, or you need to me happy restricting your play to just grinding in/near safezones or only playing on the fringes of the map away from monuments. Either that, or only play right after wipe.

spawn in > start farming anything > get maybe enough for a TC > get oneshot or just sprayed down before you can react by a fullkit AK when you're literally just a naked with 2k wood and a stone hatchet. repeat 10 times before you are able to place the TC.
the good moments are great, of course, winning a fight feels incredibly good and once you start getting better you win more, but the first 400 hours are just naked hell with no escape except pushing through. it does sour the experience of watching these videos at lot, seeing the guy just winning. he deserves it of course, but you wouldn't win against the tunnel rats, and the past hour is just gone to some kid with a pump shotgun.

I thought for certain you were going to leave us with a cliffhanger! Love how much effort you put into your buildups with the music and everything!
Willjum: I don't think I've ever bought a gun from outpost in a video.
Spoonkid: ......
Bro this is shit i tried and it's a waste of time yes its safe but its a waste of time.. you are better of running roads, doing DOME or out in the water or just dont play on high pop servers .
People, don't do what this guy is doing he does it for content, but it's not practical what he does if you play rust in order to survive the whole wipe
- first trick is not to go on absurdly high pop servers especially official where everybody is cheating
- second only play solo servers if you are solo
- and third metal detector is a waste of time

@@Sucrose__ Can you face your doors where there can't be a good line of sight?
It's definitely not fullproof, but having to protect an armored door or two from someone who can't reliably satchel rocket is a lot easier than doing so outside of a safe zone.
Also, raiding someone IN a safe zone is kinda scum shit. If you're staying in fishing village, only ever using the metal detector and fishing, nobody's going to have a grudge against you strong enough to want to target you unless they're a real piece of shit.
But I don't know the community THAT well. Like I said, I've never been able to play Rust, myself. All I know is from watching a few TH-camrs.
