I know, right? I dunno, something about it feels so... genuinely old. You have fall damage, but some areas have cushions, leaves or ponds for you to land on. Not always tho, so you should be on your toes and be _intelligent_ about where you should take a risky shortcut back down, or play more sloppily. The weird minigames in some of the mirrors, especially the one with the garbage bin, it feels like something you'd see in Banjo Tooie really. I've noticed that many of the games from those days always have _that_ part. The bullshit. The stuff that always makes you groan and say "ok, here we go, it's this part/stuff now". And Corn Kidz 64 has that in moderate amounts, always something to make me groan a bit, but never in a way that makes me overtly frustrated. Heck, it makes the game feel legitimately like it was released in 1999 to me. In big part thanks to the writing and art style, honestly - it looks like it's promoting a real life Canadian cartoon from back then! Something about it all makes it feel like Seve and Alexis are very well established characters with a clear dynamic that anyone could recognize. It feels like a high quality licensed game, except there's no license, that's just how the game is. It genuinely went beyond my expectations, and I had a blast with the whole thing.
Oh yeah, when I learned about the clear screws, that's when I started losing some of my own screws really 😅 those secrets are kind of insane... yet I did manage to find some on my own! Heck, I think the ones in the tutorial area are genuinely more cryptic and unthinkable than most of the other ones.
Pseudoregalia feels sooo good to play, it's insane! Such a vibe sliding, jumping, wall-kicking through the levels. I first played it before the map update and didn't even mind it that much because of the shmoovement. Several replays ensued.
If the dev made a sequel with the same groundwork but just larger and more bosses I’d be so happy, everything about the game feels very tightly put together and cohesive it’s a shame it ends so fast.
In the same year (2024) I was the Indie Dev of a game called "Randy & Manilla", but in Early Access and is not a fully 3D platformer, but it has 3D platformer sections.
Corn Kidz 64 felt like I was playing a licensed game from back then, except it stood up above the norm by actually being fantastic, and the license was actually a fever dream someone had. The art style, the graphics and effects, the writing (which I adore, got me snickering a lot), even the small amounts of bullshit (never too much for me, I've genuinely dealt with worse in games I love to pieces), it felt like a game released in 1999 to promote a canadian/french cartoon! Don't ask me why I think it's specifically french or canadian, the artstyle just gives me that vibe. The remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap also feels the same way to me, and I'm starting to think it's due to the characters' big eyes. Kinda reminds me of Rayman 2. And the moveset, super satisfying to get a handle on and master. The way you can link moves together in some challenges makes you feel like a master, and it's very versatile while also being very focused. Not to mention, it has _secrets!_ Meanwhile, Cavern of Dreams felt like a beautiful dream someone had, one a those super memorable ones that you will never forget which then got translated into playable format. Everything about this game is endearing, charming, puzzling, deep, headscratching and even horrifying at times! A beautiful and really interesting world, with equal focus on not just platforming, but puzzle solving as well! Another game with a surprisingly compelling story, except it also has a deeper backstory you can dip your toes into, and played more straight instead of for laughs. It's just fun to mess around as Fynn, see the beautiful and/or dark landscapes, finding all the items and solving all of its riddles! They take the multi-world visiting aspect of Tooie and actually make it work in a way that doesn't feel cumbersome! Even tho thete are no enemies, the game doesn't need them, as the platforming can shine in being the main source of challenge, no health bar needed (you're launched towards Nowhere, Middleof when you take damage, but have a chance to recover) and it feels satisfying to accomplish. Not to mention, it has _secrets!_ I have Pseudoregalia, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. But I wanna, trust me! And it deeply saddens me that some folks are off-put by what's definitely one of the best 3D platformers out there, simply cus of the more risque furry aspects of the game. Yes, Sybil has hips and you can choose to not let her wear pants. Well then if that upsets you so much, give her pants and look at the environments instead! You kinda need to in order to platform around! She doesn't even have enough polygons for whatever dirty detail these people's minds come up with to actually be there anyways.

Yellow Taxi is one of the best platformers i've played in years. It's so much fun, movement feels fun to play, tough to master. And it's just so damn beautiful
The important thing the taxi game gets right is that its okay to play around with modern effects and retro graphics, or even combine styles. It doesn’t need to be “authentic”, unless you literally make a modern game for the actual old system.
Pseudoregalia was one of the stand-out indie titles of this year in my opinion, it just felt like a perfect platformer to me and I loved every second of it. My only gripe was that one week after I finished it, they added the minimap lol, I even used steams overlay feature to overlay a minimap over my game at one point while 100% it, anyone who played it after it was added definitely had a better experience. Yellow Taxi is another one of my favourite games this years.
Duuude Pseudoregalia is an incredible game. I remeber checking the newly released games on Steam seeing it and being addicted beginning to end. I just wish there was more to it.

I have such a fondness for dk64. Growing up and realizing most people shit on my childhood is very disappointing lol. It has huge flaws but the personality, music, and sense of atmosphere is incredible.

I got Corn Kids 64 on steam and it is fun. I haven't gotten around to fully beating it, but I'd like to think my playthrough of it is unique in that I don't use the controller it says I need to play. I basically use the arrow keys on the right side to move and keys on the opposite side of the keyboard for actions. Makes the game feel even more surreal and dream-like.
Another good one to check out is PsiloSybil. It has a pretty accurate PS1 aesthetic and is inspired by the simple, hard platforming of Crash Bandicoot 1.

As someone who really doesn't have nostalgia for those types of games, as a platforming fan I thought Corn Kids was infuriating to play, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. Cavern of Dreams actually was the one that saved from this thought that retro like games were all bad and many more. I haven't gotten to play Pseudoregalia or Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom yet. But while I'm excited to try out Pseudoregalia one day, I can't play Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom cause just looking at gameplay hurts my eyes and makes my head hurt.
Great video! It is amazing how many of the best sellers for 5th gen consoles were 3D platformers, but after 6th gen, not many aside from Nintendo were made (excluding cheap shovelware for 7th gen consoles.) For PS1, Crash 1, 2 and 3 were all in the top 11 best selling games for the console, with Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 in the top 13, and all 3 Spyro games in the top 30 best selling. For N64, Mario 64, DK 64 and Banjo-Kazooie were all in the top 10. I'm not sure if it was other genres improved their quality for 6th gen, or if some really bad entries in previously loved franchises (e.g. Crash, Spyro, Sonic) turned people off the genre. But it's still odd, as Jak & Daxter 1 (new franchise) was the 17th best selling game on PS2 (a console with a massive library and tons of competition), and Ratchet & Clank (another new franchise) was 22nd. Little Big Planet (new franchise) was 19 on PS3, and Ratchet & Clank (#14) sold 7 million copies on PS4. Supposedly Astro Bot has been selling really well on PS5. Obviously the exact ranks are unknown since not all publishers report their sales and sales of physical releases aren't tracked in all countries (and digital sales are even harder to track, except for on Steam where you can get a general idea of a game's success based on active player counts.) Regardless, it is strange the lack of games in the genre. AAA studios definitely seem to prefer high-risk, high-reward (expensive to develop live service games) or low-risk formulaic games (e.g. many Ubisoft games), but I'm surprised more indie and AA studios haven't gone for 3D platformers, especially since a fair number have tried out 2D platformers. In any case, excellent video! You cover 4 different games, spending about 2 to 4 minutes for each one, covering important parts that could decide whether someone enjoys it, and have timestamps in case you're no longer interested in getting one of those games after hearing a bit. I also thought your intro and summary were great: I agree, I love many retro 3D platformers, but I think trying something new is a much better path forward for future 3D platformers vs. trying too hard to appeal to nostalgia.

I was the right age to grow up alongside around this genres peak in the early to mid '00s and I think the market just got saturated and there was a massive push for games as a medium to 'grow up', like think about the negative response to Wind Waker's graphics. I think the genre had its limits somewhat, if you look at Rareware they were the masters of this genre and arguably pioneers with Banjo-Kazooie but they were even clearly getting frustrated by how far they could take it with games like Conker's Bad Fur Day aiming to buck trends that they were into. Also games like DK64 and Banjo-Tooie becoming arguably too convoluted for their own good. Maybe platformers mostly drying up for Ps3 and Ps4 era generations was good for the genre though since now we're getting some really innovative ones like Yellow Taxi :)! Glad you agree on the value of innovation over retrospection!
Never understood why platfomers practically instantly died out with 7th gen consoles. The PS2 platformers especially, which still have a cult following (look at the Jak and Daxter OpenGOAL project).

Surprised you didn't talk about the music too much. I feel like music and sound design are huge factors, at least for me, in retro platformers. If there's anything that stuck with me the most about them it's gotta be the music. Never knew about Cavern of Dreams or Yellow Taxi though, great video and thanks for the showcase! Pseudoregalia is one of the greatest platformer i have ever played. I played it before the map feature was added, i think wothout it adds to the atmosphere of dreamlike..not knowing where you are but feels familiar based on the nostalgic look. The movement is the best ever on any platformer.. beautiful game with a story that isnt in your face. Anyways, great video..your take on the games are very insightful...got yourself a subscriber.

Almost never played 3d platformers, but after astrobot want to continue this genre. Thats how I found your video. Subscribed. Very informative and well made content. Almost finished pseudoregalia.. I think) fantastic game , very addictive and fun. And some nice contrast after Astro , dark soulsy vibes)
As someone who didn't have access to these "older" game generations until their late teens, I fell in love with the first Spyro game. It's still my favorite game of all time for the sheer joy of exploring its many levels. Sadly I've never gotten to own N64, nor the library outside of ports. I personally don't agree with the thought of Corn Kidz being a novelty, I think it packs a lot of dense exploration into even its tutorial, and that one "proper" level feels like it has the complexity of at least 2 SM64 worlds, especially with the little mini-zones and the new places you can explore with the game's big upgrade ability. I also personally didn't struggle too hard with the platforming outside of the walljump tiles, the Boss, the final platforming gauntlet, or the *secret* final platforming gauntlet. I actually went and found all the secret collectibles too! Mostly down to just enjoying how the game felt to play. I can fully accept that might just be me though. And a note on Cavern of Dreams, there's actually some postgame! Once you finish the game with your new power, you can go explore outside the boundaries with it! There's usually one hidden sign in every single room, but some have a hidden challenge, too! I have YTGV and Pseudoregalia in my library already, haven't gotten around to playing them yet, but this vid has made me even more excited for when I get to it! Just installed Pseudoregalia, might try and test it out tomorrow or the day after! Also a note, glanced through the other comments, glad you already know about Big Catch! So for a different suggestion, if you want something with a more Crash Bandicoot feel, look at Psilosybil! And for a more out-there 3D platformer, Orbo's Odyssey!
Hello and thank you so much for watching and such a thoughtful response :) The first spyro game just rules so damn much, I'm really interested in making a video about it's general vibe and my nostalgia for it. Like the how the Stewart Copeland soundtrack is perfect, the weird kinda quiet feel of the levels and beautiful pastel skyboxes. I love it's sequels too, but the original has such a strong resonance with me that I'd love to explore and share with others. It's also one of the very first games I really got into as a kid. Ty for you take on Corn Kidz, I perhaps come off too harshly on it in the video since it is a lot of fun to sink into and explore, it just isn't totally for me. I wanted to get across the point of why for me, innovating is more exciting than chasing nostalgia, but I am absolutely not immune to pure nostalgia trips either! Hope you enjoy Pseudoregalia and YTGV, both two of my favs I've played this year. I've looked into Psilosybil and that game looks rly cool, I am a big fan of Crash 1-4 so of course looks up my alley. Orbo's Odyssey I have on my steam wishlist so will def check it out one day!
Nice video, however I disagree with the idea that Pseudoregalia not including a map at launch was a mistake, I think that getting lost is part of that game's intended experience as it leans into that feeling of being lost in a dream. I'm slightly disappointed that so many people playing the game aren't willing to meet the game on it's own terms because of inconvenience. The full game's not out yet but I'd recommend trying out the free prologue of The Big Catch 'The Big Catch: Tacklebox', as it's honestly the best Platformer I've played recently.

A few others have told me the no map build of Pseudoregalia was preferred and it did make me rethink my stance on it, specifically me calling it a "mistake" was ironically a mistake. But I think I still personally prefer having the option. For the most part of my playthrough I didn't need the map, but at the end where I was collecting the last couple keys I definitely preffered having the map to help out! Big Catch seems like it might be amazing I loved the demo, it was even better than I expected!
There's something about indie games and goats, man. - Goat Simulator - Escape Goat - Undertale and Deltarune - Two examples _in this video alone_ in Pseudoregalia and Corn Kidz I also recall putting a trade quest where you give a goat to a troll in exchange for passage across a bridge in a game I was making, which is either sadly or gratefully lost forever due to a combination of a computer bricking and the site I used to upload my screenshots to being taken down forever.

I’ve been trying these out as well this year! Another I played that’s short but extremely smooth controlling was Kiwi 64. I also tried Valkyrie 64 which was OOT like, but didn’t enjoy these as much as Korn Kidz and Cavern of Dreams. Cavern of Dreams was hands down my favorite; it really hit me in the crossroads of Banjo-Kazooie and ESPECIALLY Earthbound. There was soooo much Rareware style mystery to it, and that last level and its aesthetic… boy, did that elicit some unexpected emotion in me. Really enjoyed this, and would love to hear more of your thoughts on any of the 3D platformer recommendations coming through these comments (or other games!)
my main nostalgia for 3d platformers was sonic adventures. a lot of these games definitely feels like diving into the deep end before learning to swim. except pseudoregalia. that game feels like warframe.
im really happy about the 3D platformer resurgence. Corn Kidz 64 is peak and im still trying to beat that final platformer section haha. 3D platformers are genuinley my favorite.
I already bought and quite enjoy Pseudoregalia, but when I saw Cavern of Dreams show up here, just by the gameplay you showed I was sold. Now Ihave two games to lose tons of time to.
Another Platformer from this year is "Plushy from the Sky". It's a shorter Game, but also on the cheaper side. It got this early 3D level creations vibe, which is on purpose.
1:47 WOOO Pseudoregalia, I remember loving this game as it came out and beating it in around 8 hours(?). The movement was so awesome, and I remember seeing the movement tech going off early on- gotta watch the speedruns now cause it was wild starting off
Edit oh you pointed that out, nah I don’t think no map is a mistake. It made you have to really remember layouts which allowed you to get movement down well too

I kinda had the same issues when playing Corn Kidz 64, but I mostly passed it off as a "oh it's being THAT faithful to retro games" deal so it didn't bother me that much. I saw Nitro Rad's review of the game and he was soyjacking the entire time, so I'm glad there's someone who shares the same sentiment as me. Really liked the game's art, though.
You spoke about the exact four 3D platformers that I played this year! I agree about Corn Kidz 64, which is disappointing given its hype. I'd rank them a little differently though: 1. Cavern of Dreams 2. Pseudoregalia 3. Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom 4. Corn Kidz 64 I liked Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, but I think it is marred by many of the same frustrations as Corn Kidz 64: few checkpoints, finnicky jumps that make you have to repeat a whole gauntlet if you miss, etc.

I really never understood why platformers died out that quickly, its like every single dev suddenly went "oh no, we cant make those anymore" when the 7th gen came out. There are still PLENTY of fans of those genres and the IPs that were created on 6th and 7th gen (look up the Jak and Daxer OpenGOAL project, those people revived a propietary programming language to port a PS2 game to PC), you would think they would finally make new entries for those. But for some reason we have companies like Sony going "we dont have many good IPs" while having a literal boatload of them and blowing half a billion dollars on failing "As A Service" games... I just dont get it.

I love platformers but I can see why they slowly began to die out. For every Crash or Mario, there was one that was just plain bad. There were so many that it over saturated the genre and trends died out

If you want to play a very nice and FREE platformer that will test you platforming skills then play a game called "The big catch: takle box" it's seriously one of the experiences that i got with a platformer
If you ever want to make a part two, I'd recommend checking out Yooka-Laylee. It really does feel like a modern Banjo-Kazooie game. I didn't even really like Banjo-Kazooie all that much, but I loved Yooka-Laylee. It got rid of all the things I disliked about Banjo-Kazooie while improving on what it got right.

The remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap also feels the same way to me, and I'm starting to think it's due to the characters' big eyes. Kinda reminds me of Rayman 2. And the moveset, super satisfying to get a handle on and master. The way you can link moves together in some challenges makes you feel like a master, and it's very versatile while also being very focused. Not to mention, it has _secrets!_
Meanwhile, Cavern of Dreams felt like a beautiful dream someone had, one a those super memorable ones that you will never forget which then got translated into playable format. Everything about this game is endearing, charming, puzzling, deep, headscratching and even horrifying at times! A beautiful and really interesting world, with equal focus on not just platforming, but puzzle solving as well! Another game with a surprisingly compelling story, except it also has a deeper backstory you can dip your toes into, and played more straight instead of for laughs. It's just fun to mess around as Fynn, see the beautiful and/or dark landscapes, finding all the items and solving all of its riddles! They take the multi-world visiting aspect of Tooie and actually make it work in a way that doesn't feel cumbersome! Even tho thete are no enemies, the game doesn't need them, as the platforming can shine in being the main source of challenge, no health bar needed (you're launched towards Nowhere, Middleof when you take damage, but have a chance to recover) and it feels satisfying to accomplish. Not to mention, it has _secrets!_
I have Pseudoregalia, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. But I wanna, trust me! And it deeply saddens me that some folks are off-put by what's definitely one of the best 3D platformers out there, simply cus of the more risque furry aspects of the game. Yes, Sybil has hips and you can choose to not let her wear pants. Well then if that upsets you so much, give her pants and look at the environments instead! You kinda need to in order to platform around! She doesn't even have enough polygons for whatever dirty detail these people's minds come up with to actually be there anyways.

Yellow Taxi is one of the best platformers i've played in years. It's so much fun, movement feels fun to play, tough to master. And it's just so damn beautiful
The important thing the taxi game gets right is that its okay to play around with modern effects and retro graphics, or even combine styles. It doesn’t need to be “authentic”, unless you literally make a modern game for the actual old system.
Pseudoregalia was one of the stand-out indie titles of this year in my opinion, it just felt like a perfect platformer to me and I loved every second of it. My only gripe was that one week after I finished it, they added the minimap lol, I even used steams overlay feature to overlay a minimap over my game at one point while 100% it, anyone who played it after it was added definitely had a better experience. Yellow Taxi is another one of my favourite games this years.

"Spring off to a sequel" I see what you did there
I got Corn Kids 64 on steam and it is fun. I haven't gotten around to fully beating it, but I'd like to think my playthrough of it is unique in that I don't use the controller it says I need to play. I basically use the arrow keys on the right side to move and keys on the opposite side of the keyboard for actions. Makes the game feel even more surreal and dream-like.

Another good one to check out is PsiloSybil. It has a pretty accurate PS1 aesthetic and is inspired by the simple, hard platforming of Crash Bandicoot 1.

As someone who really doesn't have nostalgia for those types of games, as a platforming fan I thought Corn Kids was infuriating to play, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. Cavern of Dreams actually was the one that saved from this thought that retro like games were all bad and many more. I haven't gotten to play Pseudoregalia or Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom yet. But while I'm excited to try out Pseudoregalia one day, I can't play Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom cause just looking at gameplay hurts my eyes and makes my head hurt.

Great video! It is amazing how many of the best sellers for 5th gen consoles were 3D platformers, but after 6th gen, not many aside from Nintendo were made (excluding cheap shovelware for 7th gen consoles.)
For PS1, Crash 1, 2 and 3 were all in the top 11 best selling games for the console, with Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 in the top 13, and all 3 Spyro games in the top 30 best selling.
For N64, Mario 64, DK 64 and Banjo-Kazooie were all in the top 10.
I'm not sure if it was other genres improved their quality for 6th gen, or if some really bad entries in previously loved franchises (e.g. Crash, Spyro, Sonic) turned people off the genre.
But it's still odd, as Jak & Daxter 1 (new franchise) was the 17th best selling game on PS2 (a console with a massive library and tons of competition), and Ratchet & Clank (another new franchise) was 22nd. Little Big Planet (new franchise) was 19 on PS3, and Ratchet & Clank (#14) sold 7 million copies on PS4. Supposedly Astro Bot has been selling really well on PS5.
Obviously the exact ranks are unknown since not all publishers report their sales and sales of physical releases aren't tracked in all countries (and digital sales are even harder to track, except for on Steam where you can get a general idea of a game's success based on active player counts.) Regardless, it is strange the lack of games in the genre. AAA studios definitely seem to prefer high-risk, high-reward (expensive to develop live service games) or low-risk formulaic games (e.g. many Ubisoft games), but I'm surprised more indie and AA studios haven't gone for 3D platformers, especially since a fair number have tried out 2D platformers.
In any case, excellent video! You cover 4 different games, spending about 2 to 4 minutes for each one, covering important parts that could decide whether someone enjoys it, and have timestamps in case you're no longer interested in getting one of those games after hearing a bit. I also thought your intro and summary were great: I agree, I love many retro 3D platformers, but I think trying something new is a much better path forward for future 3D platformers vs. trying too hard to appeal to nostalgia.

I was the right age to grow up alongside around this genres peak in the early to mid '00s and I think the market just got saturated and there was a massive push for games as a medium to 'grow up', like think about the negative response to Wind Waker's graphics.
I think the genre had its limits somewhat, if you look at Rareware they were the masters of this genre and arguably pioneers with Banjo-Kazooie but they were even clearly getting frustrated by how far they could take it with games like Conker's Bad Fur Day aiming to buck trends that they were into. Also games like DK64 and Banjo-Tooie becoming arguably too convoluted for their own good.
Maybe platformers mostly drying up for Ps3 and Ps4 era generations was good for the genre though since now we're getting some really innovative ones like Yellow Taxi :)! Glad you agree on the value of innovation over retrospection!
Never understood why platfomers practically instantly died out with 7th gen consoles. The PS2 platformers especially, which still have a cult following (look at the Jak and Daxter OpenGOAL project).

Pseudoregalia is one of the greatest platformer i have ever played. I played it before the map feature was added, i think wothout it adds to the atmosphere of dreamlike..not knowing where you are but feels familiar based on the nostalgic look. The movement is the best ever on any platformer.. beautiful game with a story that isnt in your face. Anyways, great video..your take on the games are very insightful...got yourself a subscriber.

As someone who didn't have access to these "older" game generations until their late teens, I fell in love with the first Spyro game. It's still my favorite game of all time for the sheer joy of exploring its many levels. Sadly I've never gotten to own N64, nor the library outside of ports.
I personally don't agree with the thought of Corn Kidz being a novelty, I think it packs a lot of dense exploration into even its tutorial, and that one "proper" level feels like it has the complexity of at least 2 SM64 worlds, especially with the little mini-zones and the new places you can explore with the game's big upgrade ability. I also personally didn't struggle too hard with the platforming outside of the walljump tiles, the Boss, the final platforming gauntlet, or the *secret* final platforming gauntlet. I actually went and found all the secret collectibles too! Mostly down to just enjoying how the game felt to play. I can fully accept that might just be me though.
And a note on Cavern of Dreams, there's actually some postgame! Once you finish the game with your new power, you can go explore outside the boundaries with it! There's usually one hidden sign in every single room, but some have a hidden challenge, too!
I have YTGV and Pseudoregalia in my library already, haven't gotten around to playing them yet, but this vid has made me even more excited for when I get to it! Just installed Pseudoregalia, might try and test it out tomorrow or the day after!
Also a note, glanced through the other comments, glad you already know about Big Catch! So for a different suggestion, if you want something with a more Crash Bandicoot feel, look at Psilosybil! And for a more out-there 3D platformer, Orbo's Odyssey!

The first spyro game just rules so damn much, I'm really interested in making a video about it's general vibe and my nostalgia for it. Like the how the Stewart Copeland soundtrack is perfect, the weird kinda quiet feel of the levels and beautiful pastel skyboxes. I love it's sequels too, but the original has such a strong resonance with me that I'd love to explore and share with others. It's also one of the very first games I really got into as a kid.
Ty for you take on Corn Kidz, I perhaps come off too harshly on it in the video since it is a lot of fun to sink into and explore, it just isn't totally for me. I wanted to get across the point of why for me, innovating is more exciting than chasing nostalgia, but I am absolutely not immune to pure nostalgia trips either!
Hope you enjoy Pseudoregalia and YTGV, both two of my favs I've played this year. I've looked into Psilosybil and that game looks rly cool, I am a big fan of Crash 1-4 so of course looks up my alley. Orbo's Odyssey I have on my steam wishlist so will def check it out one day!

Nice video, however I disagree with the idea that Pseudoregalia not including a map at launch was a mistake, I think that getting lost is part of that game's intended experience as it leans into that feeling of being lost in a dream. I'm slightly disappointed that so many people playing the game aren't willing to meet the game on it's own terms because of inconvenience.
The full game's not out yet but I'd recommend trying out the free prologue of The Big Catch 'The Big Catch: Tacklebox', as it's honestly the best Platformer I've played recently.

A few others have told me the no map build of Pseudoregalia was preferred and it did make me rethink my stance on it, specifically me calling it a "mistake" was ironically a mistake. But I think I still personally prefer having the option. For the most part of my playthrough I didn't need the map, but at the end where I was collecting the last couple keys I definitely preffered having the map to help out! Big Catch seems like it might be amazing I loved the demo, it was even better than I expected!

I’ve been trying these out as well this year! Another I played that’s short but extremely smooth controlling was Kiwi 64. I also tried Valkyrie 64 which was OOT like, but didn’t enjoy these as much as Korn Kidz and Cavern of Dreams. Cavern of Dreams was hands down my favorite; it really hit me in the crossroads of Banjo-Kazooie and ESPECIALLY Earthbound. There was soooo much Rareware style mystery to it, and that last level and its aesthetic… boy, did that elicit some unexpected emotion in me.
Really enjoyed this, and would love to hear more of your thoughts on any of the 3D platformer recommendations coming through these comments (or other games!)
my main nostalgia for 3d platformers was sonic adventures. a lot of these games definitely feels like diving into the deep end before learning to swim. except pseudoregalia. that game feels like warframe.

1:47 WOOO Pseudoregalia, I remember loving this game as it came out and beating it in around 8 hours(?).
The movement was so awesome, and I remember seeing the movement tech going off early on- gotta watch the speedruns now cause it was wild starting off

I kinda had the same issues when playing Corn Kidz 64, but I mostly passed it off as a "oh it's being THAT faithful to retro games" deal so it didn't bother me that much. I saw Nitro Rad's review of the game and he was soyjacking the entire time, so I'm glad there's someone who shares the same sentiment as me. Really liked the game's art, though.

I liked Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, but I think it is marred by many of the same frustrations as Corn Kidz 64: few checkpoints, finnicky jumps that make you have to repeat a whole gauntlet if you miss, etc.

I really never understood why platformers died out that quickly, its like every single dev suddenly went "oh no, we cant make those anymore" when the 7th gen came out. There are still PLENTY of fans of those genres and the IPs that were created on 6th and 7th gen (look up the Jak and Daxer OpenGOAL project, those people revived a propietary programming language to port a PS2 game to PC), you would think they would finally make new entries for those. But for some reason we have companies like Sony going "we dont have many good IPs" while having a literal boatload of them and blowing half a billion dollars on failing "As A Service" games... I just dont get it.

I love platformers but I can see why they slowly began to die out. For every Crash or Mario, there was one that was just plain bad. There were so many that it over saturated the genre and trends died out
And yet still, some trends persist for some reason. FPS games for example.

If you want to play a very nice and FREE platformer that will test you platforming skills then play a game called "The big catch: takle box" it's seriously one of the experiences that i got with a platformer
If you ever want to make a part two, I'd recommend checking out Yooka-Laylee. It really does feel like a modern Banjo-Kazooie game. I didn't even really like Banjo-Kazooie all that much, but I loved Yooka-Laylee. It got rid of all the things I disliked about Banjo-Kazooie while improving on what it got right.
