I allways thinked Jet was a parrot because of his voice acting. I'm not native english speaker so to realize he was actually a Hawk was stunning. Also a game with hovering skateboards and a Hawk character who isn't called "Tony the Hawk" was a huge missed potential. 😂

I remember playing this game on the ps2 without a memory card so I would always replay the same levels TILL THIS DAY I HAVEN'T BEATEN THE BOSS. I'M SO MAD

It always bothered me that Shadow and Rouge were not in the story. It would have been interesting to see Jet compete with the ultimate life form and the Babylon Rogues interacting with a professional jewel thief. You know, before Free Riders, when we were already deep in the Pontac and Graff era.

I feel like I waited forever for this exact video.

Grew up on this game along with Halo I and II (among other games), and hard agree the game is goated. I actually have a copy, along with a gamecube, but I think it's got a scratch or two so only like half the game works without crashing. Cool video!

The original Spyro games are nostalgic nectar but if I'm honest I prefer to play the Reignited Trilogy just because thats what the games felt like when I was a kid.

The thing about the Gnorcs is, they're meant to be a cross between Gnomes and Orcs, so they're supposed to be "ugly". I do have a personal gripe with Toys For Bob removing the guns though, since throughout the game we see the Gnorc's weapons and threat progress through different stages with the guns as a final "things are serious now" means of show, not tell.

Toys For Bob elected to make them look more simian-like to avoid offensive stereotypes.

Loved the video! Spyro 1 was the first game I ever played when I was three years old. Wish I could go back there so bad.

Spyro 1 was one of my first games ever when i got into gaming. Absolute classic and more chill and more fun levels overall than 2 and 3

The original PS1 games have such good vibes, the reignited trilogy whilst playing well just feels like a spyro in unreal engine 4 tech demo in vibes imo

As someone who never owned a Nintendo 64 or played BK, Corn Kidz felt like a boring game with jank controls and a hard to read level design.

Spyro the Dragon was my first fully 3D experience in gaming that I can remember. Wouldn't have it any other way. Literally felt like teleporting to a different world and living a dream. It's honestly insane how often people casually whipped up material so magically unique and inspiring from old hardware.

The important thing the taxi game gets right is that its okay to play around with modern effects and retro graphics, or even combine styles. It doesn’t need to be “authentic”, unless you literally make a modern game for the actual old system.

Vindicated. I love the first game. It’s just so…. Atmospheric. No one telling you what to do, no NPCs aside from the dragons. You can complete every level as soon as you get there, and there are secrets abound. I appreciate what Reignited did, it made the individual dragons more interesting and exciting, but I had memorized the delivery of the dialogue and some of the changes in Reignited just didn’t hit the same way (the Parappa reference isn’t the same).

Spyro 3 is my favourite

My first experience with Spyro was the reignited trilogy. The only thing missing from these games for me is unlocking cool new abilities like in banjo kazooie.

These past few years, it seems like with the rise of liminal imagery, we've collectively realized how liminal the OG Spyro games were. Makes me wonder if it's influenced why I like the feeling of liminality so much. Even when drawing backgrounds it seems like I subconsciously seek to replicate the same feeling of a Spyro level. Artisans, Summer Forest, Autumn Plains and Sunrise Spring really look like ideal places to live.

Great review! I love Spyro even as a 31 year old dude. The music absolutely bangs and I'm glad you touched on that first. I've been bumping Dark Hollow and Ice Caverns since the year of our lord 1998.

I will say one thing I wish Reignited kept from the original, was how different the Dragons looked in appearance without clothing. My favorite Dragons were always the Peacekeepers because the fur stood out vastly to me. Not to mention just how massive they were, the fact some chose to stand on all fours, and how epic they felt due to their larger than life presence. In Reignited, the fur was completely removed and only clothing exists to differentiate them. Not to mention the size difference was also taken away. I was really excited to see them, only for them to feel as samey as the Artisan Dragons. They just have different clothing now instead of varying features that did wonders for the world building. Like you never, NEVER see fur on Dragons anymore in media these days. I'm not the only one who thinks we should've gotten giant, fluffy, Peacekeeper Dragons right? Anybody?
