  • I recently found out about Corn Kidz 64, a fairly new 3D platformer on Steam that looked EXACTLY like the kind of thing I'd like to play...!
    So I did, and here's my thoughts!

    I got this this a day after it arrived on steam. Contemporary indie games usually don't grab me but this one did almost immediately. No other game brought me back to an era where me and an older cousin were figuring out donkey kong 64 bit by bit. Sadly, that cousin is long gone but while I played through this I just imagined what he would've thought and that brought a level of comfort to my soul that I haven't felt in a couple decades.

    I was very impressed with this game. Even though it only took me about 6 hours to beat, it was some of the most fun I’ve had with an idie game in awhile. It perfectly captures the fun and vibe of 3D platformers from the n64 era.

      Sometimes the indies are actually worth the money. Few dollars and 6 hours of gameplay? We pay 60 for the same thing now a days

    Man, can't believe we're now in the N64 Phase of Indie Game Renaissance. Good to know a game like this exists, and for cheap too!

    I like to imagine this is some cancelled N64 game from 2000 that became lost media until it was found on an old hard drive and finally released 23 years later.

    • @commentarysheep
      @commentarysheep 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I feel like this game has the feel of a cancelled Rare game that they were working on alongside Star Fox Adventures for the Gamecube, as some sort of last hurrah to the N64, but then it got cancelled because of the lack of resources and motivation to support the aging N64 hardware and the Microsoft buyout.

      Yeah this game's graphics & artstyle have a distinct French vibe to them. Is the game's developer from France?

    I want to take a moment to praise the visuals in particular. This game gets so much more than just the visuals right, and I absolutely 100% recommend grabbing this game to anyone who's a fan of games of the N64 and PS1 era, or even just 3D platformers in general. However, something I really want to put emphasis on is how much technology has changed since back then. We didn't always have HD screens to view things on, the old CRT screens we played games on back in the day were physically incapable of showing as much detail our modern monitors and displayed visuals in a completely different way, all culminating together into a very particular look that developers were absolutely taking into account when designing games.
    Low quality textures and low poly models looked higher quality than they really were just because of how everything kinda blurred together. Consequentially, games of that era physically looked better than they do when we play them today with our HD screens that make it easier to see every single pixel and just how low poly the models are. The filters present in this game manage to wonderfully and beautifully recapture the look of how those older games looked to us on those older CRT screens back in the day, and it's clear that the entire game was designed with this in mind every bit as much as retro developers were designing their games to be seen on those older screens.
    They really committed above and beyond to capturing the look of those older games though. This game is absolutely brimming with details and personality. This is far more than just your typical nostalgia bait, it's readily apparent that the developers have a huge passion for how old games looked back in the day and wanted to crank out as much detail as possible without betraying that art style. It's similar to how Shovel Knight looks like an NES platformer but does things visually that wouldn't be possible on the NES. Take Corn Kidz and show it off side by side with genuine games of the era such as SM64, Banjo Kazooie, Ape Escape, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, etc. and you'll notice quickly how visually appealing the game is. Indeed, if this game were to have come out in late 2001 for the PS1 and/or N64 I don't doubt for a second that reviewers of the time would be praising the visuals as being pretty top notch for a game made for previous gen hardware in a time when the PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, and Dreamcast were on the market with their next gen graphics as a major selling point.

      my brother is really into retro hardware (so much so he's been learning how to write an N64 game from scratch and run it on hardware with a flash cart) and this game nails the vibe of that era so perfectly i actually tricked him into thinking i was playing an n64 homebrew game running on real hardware lol

    • @yupazestru5189
      @yupazestru5189 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah actually, plenty of GCN games look better in Dolphin by a good margin. The quality of progressive scan is often just like HD but blurrier, and HD makes it better with a few crummy texture being the exception.

    • @Crow_Rising
      @Crow_Rising 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yupazestru5189 If you're playing games on Dolphin you're playing Gamecube and Wii games. They're games that were made with a higher fidelity of quality, and with certain art styles absolutely still graphically hold up even when upscaled without filters. Wind Waker is a noteworthy example.
      I'm talking about games with graphics from the previous generation hardware. N64/PS1 style, not Gamecube/PS2 style. These games are noticeably more low poly and have much lower quality textures, causing them to look much better on retro monitors that did a better job of hiding the lack of detail because of how small the screen resolution was and how blurry the screen itself was. The filters present in Corn Kidz 64 do a good job of replicating how these types of games looked on these older CRT screens. It's not 100% perfect but it feels genuine enough to invoke just the right nostalgia response and looks great.

    I had a blast playing this game, and while it definitely feels exactly like playing an old N64 platformer, that comes with good and bad. There were definitely more than a handful of moments where it felt like my greatest enemy was the controls/camera itself. The Anxiety Tower has no right to have impermanent checkpoints considering how inconsistent certain actions can be. I’m all for insanely challenging final levels e.g. the final secret ones in Mario 3D Land/World, but so many falls and losses of health in this one felt like a roll of the dice as to wether the game felt like I jumped well enough or was allowed to grab the next ledge. I got every single experience cube and loved the journey there, but I might never find the motivation to best that final level until they release an update which allows those checkpoints to stay past losing your entire life bar.

    Y'know, regarding the XP collectables, I was trying to be as thorough as I could... and it reached a point where I realized I was missing three single cubes I would definitely miss without a guide. One in the Attic area of the Monster Park, another in the ceiling of the Ma Spider grave, and the final one... was the second of the two cubes on the church's windows. For some reason, I grabbed one but completely missed the other. Took me a solid hour or even more to find it, but hey, apparently it unlocks a really secret final area, so it's worthwhile.
    Those Void Screws were complete news to me halfway through the game tho. I missed all three of them in the Park, and the same was gonna happen in the Hollow too if I hadn't checked a guide to find some of the XP I was missing. These are damn well hidden, in ways you don't expect too! They're like the Anti-Cubes in FEZ, only with less codes in the mix - there's three XP cubes and a crystal locked behind those.

    This game is THE perfect “fuck you” to Microsoft for burning Rareware to the ground.
    It shows a ton of potential to what Rare could have been, shall Microsoft let them iterate on their pedigree and not force them into the Kinect Mines, or even if Nintendo kept Rare all to themselves. But as Tamarin is being developed by Playtonic (the new studio of the OG Rare team) and Microsoft heavily in talks with Nintendo right now to share their IPs to them, I still think there’s hope left that justice gets served to Rare and the OG Rare dev team one day.
    By the way, I like how you have a style similar to Nitro Rad’s reviews. These kinds of indie platformer reviews are why I still have passion for gaming, after the modern AAA landscape has started focusing on penny-pinching instead.

    4:31 Subtle? I definitely don't agree about that. Don't get me wrong, I love the filter, but I love it for being so obvious. It's a heavy 240p filter, not exactly something I'd call subtle lol. I've experienced with many CRT filters for emulation, but this is one of the heavier ones I've seen. I really like it though.

    • @Petronious

      I suppose I should have said natural, instead of subtle tbh.
      I was basically trying to mention how other new retro-styled games have tried it.
      I've played a few that go way overboard with the CRT effect whereas Corn Kidz just nails it.
      I appreciate the comment though! Nice to know someone is listening to my ramblings 🙂👍
