Knitting Help - Pinhole Cast-On

- The Pinhole Cast-On can be used when working just a few stitches on double-pointed needles, and it is unique in that it can be tightened, leaving no hole or gap in the very center of your work.
The pattern for the square swatches I show in the video is as follows:
CO 8 stitches, divide between 4 double-pointed needles, then K around all stitches.
Row 1: KFB all stitches
Row 2: K around all stitches
Row 3: *KFB, K2, KFB*, repeat on other 3 needles
Row 4: K around all stitches
Row 5: *KFB, K to last stitch, KFB*, repeat on other 3 needles
Row 6: K around all stitches
Repeat Rows 5 and 6 to desired size, BO normally.

I use this all of the time in crochet, but I had no clue I could use it in knitting too. That's amazing!

This is like... perfect for top down hats. My newest obsession is hats worked from the top down. then continued and knit like a top up hat - then turned into one double thick hat. Perrrfect for winter, and reversible

This is called the "magic loop" in crochet - but it would be totally confusing to call it that in knitting!

Ok this looks so much easier with this method. I have given up on a few projects in the past that had you start in the center and got too frustrated to keep going. This is before utube haha!!
Can I just say that I've been searching for this cast-on method online for two months? My pattern (Persian Dreams on Ravelry) calls it circular cast-on, so that's what I was looking for. None of those videos were helpful to me, and I may have been one of the people who sent you the email asking you to please PLEASE make a video because you are far and away the best teacher I've been able to find. Now I can finally make my blanket!!! It could be that the circular cast-on and the pinhole cast-on are slightly different since the other videos did not utilize a crochet hook, but this method will work perfectly. You are the best, and thank you so much!
I'm so glad I saw this video! Not long ago I tried knitting a dishcloth that started with just a few stitches in the center. I just jumped in & followed the directions, but when I got a few rows done (read: "almost to the end"), it would not lie flat - looked more like a flattened cone shape or something, because I'd somehow gotten too much yarn into the first few stitches. DPNs and I are not friends. Can't wait to try this & see if it helps!

When I pull the tail through the center, I use the crochet hook; poke up from the bottom, grab the tail and pull through.This is assuming I have not lost the crochet hook by now. But I have probably lost my tapestry needle, too. While looking for either, I find the other. Along with a couple of M&M's and stitch markers.
I did this for a hat pattern I designed but I didn't know the name of the cast on and didn't know there where patters that use this cast on I was just playing with my yarn and needs thanks for this now I know what to call it

Very good idea
As a crocheter, I've used the magic circle many, many times. Just an FYI to knitters; until the tail is woven in, the hole can reopen. It's no big deal, just pull on the tail to close it again.

1. This is GENIUS. I had just started a project that needs this and found this by chance, I had only done three rounds so I'm starting over this way! What good timing! (And I can't believe I didn't think of it myself, don't we all wonder how we didn't invent things like this though ....)
2. Do you need to use the same mm size hook as the needle you'll use to not have wonky gauge, or is close enough close enough? I ask because my project is super bulky with 9mm needles, lol, but I figure others will also have the same question and thought I'd ask.
as a crocheter, make sure to weave in that end really well!
Love it! As many said, I've used it in crochet. I continue the yarn tail on through another stitch or two (first stitches that were cast on) not backward through last stitches) to make the circle look more finished.
I don’t have any problems casting on. Where I suffer is joining the round & starting round one.

Hi Staci, I was just wondering if you know if this cast on is sometimes called "Emily Ocker's Circular Cast On" (& please excuse me if you do mention it in the video but I watched a few times & never heard you mention it). If not, have you heard of that cast on & could you possibly do a video on it if this is not the same as that cast on? I absolutely LOVE your tutorials, I think you are the greatest teacher & I'm always so bummed when I can't find a tutorial for what I'm trying to learn made by you. Thanks for all your help!

I use a similar cast on (disappearing loop by techknitter) but it leaves a much longer tail. This might be a better option.
Since I use this for stuffed animals, I always tie off the tail as it can work back open.
BTW, you said you would show the link for working small amount on DPN, but I didn't see the link.
I couldn't find my DPN's, so am magic looping it. Just have a different color stitch marker for your first side so you know where your first side is..
I've seen other such squares where the increases are securely placed in the middle of the row and I wonder how you work this square with the increases at the ends.

I love this - I used DPNs for socks...got kind of tired of socks...can you tell me where to find pattern or technique to make the square you showed at the beginning? It's a different look that mitered square, log cabin, and the 10 stitch blanket - I would like to learn how to do that technique! Can you keep going larger into a blanket? Wouldn't your needle eventually become too small? Or do you make a bunch of the smaller squares and join? I have done this look in crochet, but would love to do that square you showed at the beginning in knitting. You are a great teacher - thanks so much!!

Would you recommend using a crochet hook smaller, larger, or the same as your needles? I'm worried that my beginning loops would be too loose.

Does doing the square in garter stitch affect if it lays flat?
Is there a technique to cast off w/o leaving a tight edge? I’m finishing a baby blanket and hate the thick tight edge it leave when I cast off. Hopefully you have a trick in that bag of techniques.

Which stitch do you knit first? My cast-on looks fine, but when I start working, it looks like I'm working on the wrong side, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

yes, i actually did this. just put stitch markers in the four corners so you know where to increase.
I am making barn raising "quilt" it uses this. Can I do this method on magic loop. I really don't use dpns
You can do this using magic loop, but I think it's actually easier to do it on DPNs, which is why I demonstrate it this way. But if you prefer magic loop, that's totally possible.

Has anyone tried this cast on to make a top-bottom hat? I guess we should make more incs then? Any thoughts?
There are hat patterns out there that are knit top-down and use this cast-on. You can find these patterns on Ravelry, using the advanced search feature, and filtering for "top down".

What keeps the hole from stretching back open?
+deeannmariee - when you weave in the ends, you fasten it down. But unless there is pressure working to loosen the cast-on, there really isn't any reason for it to come loose.
+VeryPink Knits Ah, okay. I was wondering because I've done the magic loop in crochet on a polka dot afghan and the some of the centers came loose when it was washed and dried. (Oops!) Guess I didn't secure the tail good enough. Thanks for answering! 😊.

No - you really have to use double-pointed needles to get started with this cast-on. You can switch to circulars once you have a little fabric created.

Hi Stacey, I have a question that may sound strange. I understand how to cast on for the pin hole cast on, but the example you got in grey of the pin hole cast on can you tell me how you did that. I mean how many stitches did you cast on, did you increase every stitch on first round n knit plain next round, then how many stitches did you divide them up into, I mean like for example after every 4 stitch did you place a marker. N did you increae before every marker one round n knit a plain round. The reason why I'm asking is I like the small flower looking design and want to create lots of small ones in different colours and pattern and join them like granny squares for the project I'm doing. Hope that makes sense. Many thanks.
