The biggest factor impacting how much you earn in your 30s is not your education, but how rich your parents are…
In fact, if you were born in 1991 instead of 1990, even that impacts how much you’ll earn in your 30s because folks graduating in a recession year, go on to earn lesser than the folks who graduated at the boom just a year or so earlier for easily 10-15 years because their base salary and increment thereon kicks off from a shorter pedestal…
One of the largest indicators of life expectancy is the pincode you’re born in, and can bring variances of 30 years in average life, even if two people come from the same city but different pin codes…
But no one who went to a privileged school, or college, or has made it to a top job or started a successful business will tell you that they got a great start compared to 99% of the world…
They’ll tell you the rags to riches story on how hard they worked, coming from a modest middle class family…
Because those stories help glorify the effort and show how the protagonist worked against all odds to make it happen…
That’s possibly why Ranveer Singh was shown as a Bollywood outsider despite having grown up in the inner circle of the who’s who of Indian entertainment…
And of course because no one wants to discredit their effort in favour of pure privilege.
Regardless, the point is not to say that you shouldn’t work hard or hustle, because no matter where you start, you have to work hard to go higher
But some stations require you to work exponentially harder than the folk who are above you…
Which is why, it’s the first million which is the hardest, and then it begins to get easier…
So here’s the thing. There are way too many above you, but if you’re on this social media platform reading this, in all probability you’re in the top 2% of all other communities…
And that is worth being thankful about.
Because you don’t know what the remaining 98% will have to do to get to the blind luck of the family, pincode and resources you were born into.
