- In this video I share some tips on how to help clients out of 'double binds' or 'no-win situations'. While many of these 'catch-22' situations are very real, others will be found to be psychological constructs.

Thanks, I suffered from double bind, so I listened to your video three times to understand it. Staying awake is superb technique to sleep.
Really good video, thank you for that. The only thing that I really, really would discourage is the "try to stay awake"-tactic for sleep problems. I believe, this is actually quite dangerous. While it might work short-term, the effect will flatten and then the Problem will likely be getting a lot worse. A person who keeps doing this, would bind a suggestion "i have to be awake" with being able to sleep. The result long term is likely to be a erratic and uncontrollable sleep patterns. For example, the result could be that a patient wakes up in the middle of the night and is constantly tired during the day etc. "I should sleep, so I should try to stay awake". That is a worse double-bind now, one that could easily spark psychosis. It pretty much requires self-deception and is likely cause confusion and feel manipulative. Better don't try to "trick" the subconscious.

Instructing a person to "be spontaneous" is a double bind.

Double binds confuse me? The only way to make any sense of a double bind is like putting your foot on the gas and the gear is in neutral the harder you press the more you stay still how the hell are you going anywhere?
