What my therapist told me to think when I have anxiety. Okay so, think of anxiety as a lady that comes to your house (mind) and hits your door. Most of us we will not open because we are trying to fight those bad thoughts right? I am telling you, open the door. Let the lady come in, the lady in black I say, and be friendly with her. Make her understand that you don't care anymore. Make her afraid of you. Please try and never ever give up❤

Brilliant. Thank you. I really like the mind searching for the reason for the feeling of anxiety, which is why even positive events can be a source of great fear and anxiety for the anxious person. Very useful.
I feel prayer helps: "O God! Refresh and gladden my spirit. Purify my heart. Illumine my powers. I lay all my affairs in Thy hand. Thou art my Guide and my Refuge. I will no longer be sorrowful and grieved; I will be a happy and joyful being. O God! I will no longer be full of anxiety, nor will I let trouble harass me. I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life. O God! Thou art more friend to me than I am to myself. I dedicate myself to Thee, O Lord." ~ Baha'i Faith Prayer in Part
I apologize for an attempt to comment earlier that was overly long and perhaps was scrapped before reaching you. What I wanted to say was that I was truly impressed with your presentation: for the clear depth of intellectual background, commitment, and sincerity.
I’m anxious almost 24/7, worrying about everything. I start feeling dizzy immediately after going out in public. Especially in supermarket, malls or restaurant. Sometimes it just goes away but there is times when it’s very very persistent. I found that magnesium helps so I usually always take big amounts.
I've become the same this year due to the lack of social interaction and what's going on in the world. Dizziness non-stop, upon waking to going to sleep. Exercise, meditation and accepting the symptoms as they are tends to help. I hope we both heal soon.
It's good to actually have some light thrown on what is making me feel the way I do. The anxiety starts within a few minutes of waking early in the morning and continues throughout the day.
Sometimes it gets so bad. I feel that I can't do this anymore. I am so tired of surviving. My dream is to feel comfortable and calm inside. Seems simple but it sure is difficult.
Wow I’m so thankful I found your video about anxiety! I was in a abusive toxic relationship with an addict and ever since I left my anxiety and panic as diminished! I would get panic attacks in the car. So now a month has gone by I am afraid to drive because I am fearing a panic attack where it is difficult to escape if I need help. Something I need to work on... thanks for this!!
Hi Amanda. I just wanted to say that I had a terrible problem with panic disorder/agoraphobia some years ago so I know something about the condition. I was fortunate enough to get CBT (congnitive behavioural therapy) . I'd just like to say it worked really well for me and I was back to normal in a few months. I recommend you read Aaron Beck - CBT, it'll give you a head start . Panic disorder is very curable. best wishes and good luck
Glad I found this video. You could be talking specifically about me! I'd figured out that my constant anxiety was a kind of pathological condition but I didn't know what to do about it other than get a prescription for anxiety medicine from my GP. Your analysis of the anatomy of GAD helped me gain many insights. Thank you very much for this video.
That second step for dealing with worry: after 24 years I finally realized this while talking with a friend who also has GAD. The key thing for me was to first realize that I was agitated (and had been for 24 years) and needed to calm down (I found humming the Taylor Swift song with those lyrics strangely comforting at that moment). Now after 24 years I am finally starting to feel a change back to what it was like before this happened. It took 24 years to realise: it destroyed a career, countless friendships and relationships and led to a life on constant Turbo charge. Feeling some sense of relaxation after 24 years...can't explain how good. Thanks Mike for your work. Good counsellors are hard to find in my experience, glad you're out there.
I had a SEVERE generalized anxiety disorder and can't believe how it went away. Now I have normal anxiety that's easy to shake off. At the peak of my GAD, there was absolutely nothing that would help. I got on medications, which helped to a certain extent. Then I added daily cardio. Then I started doing CBT on my own (all you need is a workbook, no need for an expensive therapist). Learn how to set boundaries, especially if there is a toxic relationship in your life. But to be perfectly honest, I think what cured my GAD is just letting time do it's wonders.
Yes makes sense thank you!! I'm having all kinds of fears about my little girl's safety and it's all coming from her daddy passing away two years ago and me not having help with her. Hopefully soon I can get the help and support I need for her.
Sir you are a God man. The psychiatric establishment in my country - India is greatly devoid of psycho-therapy and it's miraculous benefits. I treated patients with Antidepressants and Benzodiazepines.. only to meet addictions and withdrawals.. I encourage all people to watch your videos if they speak english.. even I couldn't appreciate the wonders of psycho therapy until I saw your videos.... A million thanks..a million thanks... You have opened my eyes to this domain... That some of our traditional books and teachers never talked about. I am utterly confident that by teaching meaningful and healthy self expression we can cut down lines of 1000s of patients in our psychiatric clinics...... Most of them are on powerful cocktails of psychotropic drugs with doubtful indications.... You have sparked my interest in perhaps studying a masters in psychology after my medical degree...
Went to seek for help and found out I am indeed diagnosed with anxiety disorder. It is truly depressing. To get your day ahead seems very stressful, waking up everyday is putting me into a lot of worries and stress. Even though some of my family members aware of my anxiety they don't seem to fully understand how it works. All I hear from them is 'you have to go to work', if only it was that easy. Even if I wanted to, if the anxiety comes and attack me right then there's nothing I can do about it. The hardest thing for me is to explain what I feel when I'm having this anxious feeling, even after explaining to them, no one actually understands.
Very helpful video. I have forwarded information to my therapist so she can watch it as well as some of the others. My GAD is complicated further by Major Depressive Disorder, Agoraphobia and a bunch of other fears. Due to hyponatremia in the past, I cannot take SSRIs or SNRIs, so all my meds are only partially effective. I agree with the prior comments about never thinking about emotional trauma in the past being relevant. My parents were very overprotective, I'm an only child, and they taught me to fear almost everything, and never untaught me as I got older, so my fears are still stuck in a child's mind in my head. Thank you for the insights you provide on the TH-cam channel.
Sometimes, just thinking about the death that I'll end up one day makes me under control the worries and calm down that there is nothing to anxious about...
Sameeeeee. I realized I had this when I was about 25! I thought that it was normal to be like that (on high alert, anxious all the time...) I cried when I knew. It all made sense. The inner feeling of not being normal was justified. It was strangely liberating because knowing what's wrong is a major step in fixing/healing it.
Dr Tyrell, thank you for providing so much help for therapists as well as those of us with various conditions who are looking for help. Your TH-cam channel and website are full of information, kindly and gently expressed.
Thanks for these great tips. I teach relaxation techniques to my clients who are anxious about horse riding. It makes a world of difference. Without so much anxiety, they are able to enjoy riding again.
Some of these insights are truly helpful. Growing up in a hard-core religious environment with end-of-the-world scenarios and lots of punishment...there are some things here that really explain some things for me.
Very well said, very insightful information about Anxiety, I cannot tell parents enough to keep a close eye on their teens, who are going through Anxiety during this pandemic etc…❤️

@@jerryjones1344 thanks so much for reaching out Jerry. I have been in therapy for about a year and have been dealing with panic disorder for about two. CBT has definitely been apart of my therapy but it doesn't seem to be helping me as much as other say its helped them. I've also been diagnosed with PTSD so maybe that has something to with it. I will definitely look that book up. I appreciate it. Thanks again.
Thank you for making this video. I sometimes suffer from anxiety and this video helped me see anxiety in a more specific way and how to treat it. It's very helpful to me.
But why does it happen to us , like i still don't know why and how I got GAD , I've been struggling for 3 years , since i was 19 and i can't find the reasons to it , from a normal life to a chaotic abnormal life it's so sudden, my mind keeps on worrying, and the physical pain i feel on a daily basis is unbearable.
Agree, many of us have had trouble minded parents. Verbal and physical offence were seen as "educational" tools. They did nothing else apart leaving miserable wounds and scars in the mind and the body of innocence.
Thank you for touching on all aspects of GAD. Your explanations and solutions to overcoming Generalized Anxiety Disorder are right on the mark in this video.! Fantastic knowledge, advice and solutions in this video. Extremely helpful. Thank you Mark.
Very good video. I get a tight throat and pressure in my head and nose, it's a bit scary, anyone else get this? All the best to everybody reading this.
Past week I've had severe and random anxiety just plaguing me, can't even sleep without butterflies in my stomach. I was prescribed beta blockers to help with the physical effects of anxiety but they are not that effective as I can still feel the anxiety in my head. I've always been an anxious individual and suffered greatly my whole life, I also find this month incredibly difficult
Thank you. I got fired about 6 months ago for something that wasn't my fault and I am just discovering that anxiety is what is wrong with me. I am not about to tell my life story on all the contributing factors, but my punch line is that I am still not working, mind is going everywhere. It feels like i cannot breathe 90% of the time but there is no way a shrink can physically change someones life(style). Such is life, its shit but its what we have.
Its curable just keep hustling plan a long weekend with friends and family and at the end of the trip you will be free of it for sure... It's my personal experience I had over come severe anxiety with this I was having anxiety of death fear loss 10kg in month but now rocking and back in life🤘😎
It’s a horrible vicious loop. I’ve had long term health anxiety and it’s cardiac phobia for me unfortunately. I’ve been checked out numerous times so it’s a habit now. Any feelings in my body of sensations and I’m afraid. It’s crippling in many ways and exhausting.
I have health anxiety too! And particularly cardiac, I don’t sleep, my heart is racing know it’s bad for my health to be this way and it’s bring more anxiety
@@olgaitz2553 Hi, how long has this being going on? Firstly the best thing is to get checked out by a GP and then a cardiologist to rule out any medical issues. Secondly I’d get help in the form of CBT, exposure therapy, to build confidence and accept you have health anxiety or cardiac phobia. Once that’s taken care of remember you are NOT your thoughts! You can think the world will end tomorrow but that’s just a thought, you have no proof! You might think “what if I get a heart attack?” But that does not mean you will, I mean you’d know if you did I’m sure. Don’t live in fear. Live every day fearlessly because the one life we have is every day. Just say no to your thoughts, let them wash over you. Anxiety is like an airplane flying through turbulence, it may be uncomfortable but it generally doesn’t harm you! I hope this helps!
@@KRAZEEIZATION thank you so much!! I am going through tests with cardiologist rn it’ll take couple weeks... my problem at the moment is insomnia, I sleep like 5 broken hours even with medication 💊 (( It’s make me feel drowsy and tired all day and triggers anxiety. Do you have any advice about sleep 🙏🏻
@@olgaitz2553 You’re welcome. Sleep is important! I never had sleep problems thankfully. How long is this going on? Do you exercise daily? You look very fit, do you drink lots of coffee? Smoke? Have you a lot of worries? All can affect good sleep! The best thing is cut out stimulates, wind down in the evening by talking a 30 min walk, stretch, have a shower or bath, avoid TV, phones and internet. Read a book, try deep breathing and muscle relaxing exercises. Go to bed early and get up early. Keep hydrated. Sleeping pils are not good because they eventually become a bad habit or disrupt natural sleeping patterns. I’m no expert but excessive worry, stress and lifestyle can cause sleep problems. Get a partner to massage you at bedtime and listen to soft music or try yoga! I hope this helps!
@@KRAZEEIZATION sleep problem for 3 weeks. I am very fit, exercising daily ( not now as much because I feel tired and afraid of heart attack;) Don’t drink alcohol or coffee. I am walking at least 40 minutes before bed. Basically everything is good in my life, nothing happened, I don’t know how to get back to normal. Dr gave me pills that help with sleeping and anxiety I’ve been on it for a week, but so far it’s not working 😭
I told my boss where to stick his job, sold my house, and downsized to a cheaper lifestyle. Then I was beholden to no one, and while the stress never disappears, now twenty years later I'm happier than ever. Booze, drugs, and therapy are a waste of time. Just liberate yourself and follow your instincts.
Listening to Kay’s story is similar to mine and in a way I believe some of my anxiety comes from my fear of also being like that unconsciously after being in such an environment for a while.
And to think, I've been treating my GAD with booze, pot, and suicidal thoughts that come from my inability to hold a job, fit into society and be a functional human being.
Minus the weed, same here. Weed makes it worse and alcohol makes it good for a but then bad next day. Lost my job a month ago and every day is hell. Man I'm only 24 I feel like my whole life is ruined and I worry it'll never get any better
I live in Connecticut in the U.S. and i do not trust psychologists after years of just absolutely the worst people in the field. I refuse to have my esteem, energy and more demolished from those people. I really really wish i could work with you!
Thank you Mark. Id just like to say that your advice on exercise as aid to lower anxiety is spot on. I hate exercising but it's only thing that helps with my GAD. You do a wonderful job with your advice on youtube.
7:51 "the trouble with too many rules as a child is that it can then be hard to live in a more ambiguous reality. Much of adulthood doesn't have rules, or so sharply defined rules, so [someone with generalised anxiety disorder] may define their own rules, then worry that details aren't accounted for when planning or having things to do"
I know where mine is coming from.. I was paralyzed for no reason...I'm recovered now but iv become so self aware of my body its always on my mind. I especially since the doctors could not find out what caused it.. What's worse is that drinking takes it away.. Makes you want to drink but I almost never do.

As for me, I lost my father when I was 11 and a lot of pets in the way too. I feel anxious all the time, I think I’m gonna lose my younger siblings or my mother, I’m always checking out if they’re breathing,I even dream about it. It’s so scary, it makes me anxious, makes my breath and heart tight, it’s awful. I’m 17 I don’t drink, don’t smoke, exercise, I don’t know what else I can do. Any tips ?
I enjoy listening to your presentations. Your knowledge and experiences add so much insights to your topics. Thank you for this contributions. I am a retired School Psychologist and a Guidance Counselor, National Certified but I am not in practice right now. I have a wife that I suspect is a victim of GAD and a son that is Bipolar. I have health anxiety disorder. What do I do about that? Have had all sorts of tests done; all came back negative. But still feel worse by the week. And become more and more anxious.
inwas suffering with it for last 2 years,...jst go through a health checkup, and be sure there is no phisical issues about your symptoms. when u realise the symptoms are just the manifestations of ur anxiety, and u start to accept it,it ll become milder with going of time.and do breathing exercise ,exercise, walking regularly.stay hydrated. and pray always.god bless you
it negative feed back loop. you get anxious though which makes more sensitive to anxiety even smaller thing you react to. also negative anxiety can grow just like snow ball. You have get your mind on some thing that does not worry you to break the negative feed back loop. once break the loop you still anxiety because with g.a.d it take more time for fight flight response to wind down. In engineering it would called positive feed back loop. in machine if positive response is to strong you get device that over reacts. in amplifier if put mic to close you get squeal. antidepressant help reduce the strength of the positive feed back.which means it easier to break the loop.
Liquid iodine on one's wrists helps slightly...first thing in morning... Breathing in through nose to a count of 4... hold to a count of 7... then let breath out through mouth to a count of 8... Do quite a few times throughout the day... Breathing in oxygenated country fresh air is the best...
Great insight on this in depth subject and delivered professionally in a refined manner. Excellent work and look forward to using these tools in my own life. I thank you for your excellent dissection of this broad civil ailment that many suffer from. G J
Exercise used to make me feel better and happy, but recently it’s make me feel even more anxious I feel like I am having heart attack. Plus sleeping maybe 5 broken hours

I will not dwell on the unpleasant things of life. O God! Thou art more friend to me than I am to myself. I dedicate myself to Thee, O Lord." ~ Baha'i Faith Prayer in Part
Amen!
Thank you for this❤️
Amen.
Amen.. please pray for me 🙏 to be free from anxiety and my son
Agoraphobia is tough! It’s an issue with brain chemicals and IMO usually needs medication/therapy to cope with it
@Isaac Eow meds / therapy
For once, an alternative way to think about GAD!! Many thanks. I took notes.
This dude has references on a youtube video... solid videos thank you!
Been like that for almost a year, I have no hope anymore. How are you now three years later ?
This happens to me as well.
Take a drink everytime I say 24 years, haha 🍻.
This is brilliant… Thank you for your work and for sharing it so openly. You have a huge heart and a generous spirit.
Such an uplifting comment! Thank you for sharing!
how do I set boundaries with my father (who doesn't respect my boundaries, physical emotional etc)
How would one go about using/trying hypnosis? Where do you start or find guidance on what to use?
Could u pls share the cbt workbook u used
Yes makes sense thank you!!
Hope you are well
Same here☹️
Very helpful video.
Shirley Kaye same
Sometimes, just thinking about the death that I'll end up one day makes me under control the worries and calm down that there is nothing to anxious about...
really? death is one of the things that makes my anxiety spike the most actually so that’s interesting
Yeah I understand that but fuck being like this while alive. I want my love for life to come back and don't want to be like this at all.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Your helping tons of people in this pandemic. Me included.
E safe and healthy. Thank you so much
Thank you this is exactly what I had for many years and I didn't know it, it is really horrible living with this.
How are you right now is your anxiety already cured?
What about now
Sameeeeee. I realized I had this when I was about 25!
I thought that it was normal to be like that (on high alert, anxious all the time...)
I cried when I knew.
"The problem with too much rules as a child is it gets hard to live in an ambiguous reality as an adult " .. wow ! 😔
great therapeutic insight as usual Mark, missing needs have never heard before very revealing
Great video. This gave me so many ideas on how to help my clients. Thank you.
Would you please do a video regarding treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Thank you for this video. I just want to stop thinking something terrible is about to happen or that I'm going to fail and let everyone down!
I'm surprised you didn't mention specifically the (chronical) need for money. Which is the reason for more than half of the GADs.
Nice one Mr Mark, well done. Thanks & God bless
Thank you so much for this, it has helped.
My anxiety symptom is lightheadedness. Started with an illness, Coeliac disease. I still have it after 20 years.
Thanks Mark You are doing a terrific Job helping cope
Very good video. I get a tight throat and pressure in my head and nose, it's a bit scary, anyone else get this? All the best to everybody reading this.
Very smart therapist and this video was highly informative. I really want to see a therapist soon for my anxiety and insomnia
Same situation here doctor prescribed Me propranol (inderal) still very anxious though and still cannot sleep
How are you doing now
how are you now ?
This is great, Hannibal the cannibal explaining how to treat anxiety.
Do you have a video of your relaxation techniques?
I am going through tests with cardiologist rn it’ll take couple weeks... my problem at the moment is insomnia, I sleep like 5 broken hours even with medication 💊 ((
It’s make me feel drowsy and tired all day and triggers anxiety.
I am very fit, exercising daily ( not now as much because I feel tired and afraid of heart attack;)
Don’t drink alcohol or coffee. I am walking at least 40 minutes before bed. Basically everything is good in my life, nothing happened, I don’t know how to get back to normal. Dr gave me pills that help with sleeping and anxiety I’ve been on it for a week, but so far it’s not working 😭
Thank you SO MUCH for these wonderful, insightful videos! You are genuinely helping people! Thank you!
I'd love to but the misses won't do that
👍
Good for you man 😃🤘

Medication and therapy can help. It’s simply a chemical imbalance
Listening to Kay’s story is similar to mine and in a way I believe some of my anxiety comes from my fear of also being like that unconsciously after being in such an environment for a while.
Wonderful video!
And to think, I've been treating my GAD with booze, pot, and suicidal thoughts that come from my inability to hold a job, fit into society and be a functional human being.
Dont try to fit into society
Everybody is unique and has right live uniquely
Ughhhh same
I'm right there with you I hate just feeling numb sometimes.
Minus the weed, same here. Weed makes it worse and alcohol makes it good for a but then bad next day. Lost my job a month ago and every day is hell. Man I'm only 24 I feel like my whole life is ruined and I worry it'll never get any better
Dont buy to the race of social media and company put on us....
We are unique in our on way
Where can I find more readings about the missing needs you mentioned?
Very informative, thank you
Hi Mark
and thankyou kindly for sharing your deep insights 🙏
I live in Connecticut in the U.S. and i do not trust psychologists after years of just absolutely the worst people in the field. I refuse to have my esteem, energy and more demolished from those people. I really really wish i could work with you!
Thank you Mark. Id just like to say that your advice on exercise as aid to lower anxiety is spot on. I hate exercising but it's only thing that helps with my GAD. You do a wonderful job with your advice on youtube.
Great video! It covers a lot. Thank you
7:51 "the trouble with too many rules as a child is that it can then be hard to live in a more ambiguous reality.
1mg of Klonopin a day and 1 hour of heavy exercise per day got rid of about 85% of my general anxiety disorder.
This is the first time I hear of someone almost getting rid of this disorder!
Yeah but you get heavily addicted to the clonopin
*I’ve found that singing ones thoughts in your head, thinking thoughts backwards and finding anagrams in the words, transliterating them into sign language, Morse code, and Braille to be helpful*
I enjoyed this video. The English/British accent if so soothing. Reminds me of Harry Potter as a child.
Very helpful. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you, you have helped a lot.
Any tips ?
@prashant osho Thank you, I will get help.
Thank you very much!!! You really helped me!!!
I enjoy listening to your presentations. Your knowledge and experiences add so much insights to your topics. Thank you for this contributions. inwas suffering with it for last 2 years,...jst go through a health checkup, and be sure there is no phisical issues about your symptoms. when u realise the symptoms are just the manifestations of ur anxiety, and u start to accept it,it ll become milder with going of time.and do breathing exercise ,exercise, walking regularly.stay hydrated. and pray always.god bless you
it negative feed back loop. you get anxious though which makes more sensitive to anxiety even smaller thing you react to. also negative anxiety can grow just like snow ball.
