    Many people forget just how radically anti-slavery Marquis de Lafayette truly was, especially for his time. Even though he could not convince Washington and the rest of the US to end it's practice, he managed to convince his compatriots. Their main argument was economical, mainly that a sugar plantation wouldn't be profitable unless been worked by slaves. Lafayette bought a large estate in Haiti in order to prove them they were wrong. He only used paid workers to run the plantation, and took great care in ensuring that they worked under humane conditions, and got property treated in case of an accident. The plantation turned in a healthy profit, and the abolition of slavery was later included in an official document (The deceleration of the rights of man and the citizen) for the first time in history.

    • @marquisdelafayette1929
      @marquisdelafayette1929 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Thanks for this! Most people don’t know about how he bought the plantation to prove some naysayers wrong. He also never gave up on the slavery issue, even with Washington (who we know he loved like a father). He was probably one of the only ones to call him out over the hypocrisy.
      They found letters he had in an old house of his and he was writing all over the world to support freedom and revolutions. Like writing Bolivar, Toussaint, Thaddeus Kościuszko, etc and he encouraged and gave whatever support he could, even going broke from it. Even after he was imprisoned, he got out and refused to pledge loyalty to Napoleon. They call him naive in some publications for sticking to his values no matter the cost, but it is a rare quality and should be admired IMHO. My other favorite historical person (they are tied for me), Grant, was the same way.

      As a teacher, I love hearing this. It can be a little frustrating sometimes when only one student wants to participate, because we have to try to coax a little interest out of the rest of the class, but you should always feel comfortable to answer a question when you know the answer (or even when you don't, and want to just guess). When I was a student, I sometimes felt self-conscious about being the only one volunteering to talk, so I wouldn't do it all the time and in retrospect I wish I'd had the confidence to not care about that. Kudos to you for being secure in your interests. Enjoy your summer, and keep up the good work, I'm sure your APUSH teacher was thrilled to have you in their class.

      An underrated general who doesn’t get credit of the civil war next to sherdian,Sherman and grant. His name was George h Thomas. He was a Virginian who owned slaves but taught them how to read which was illegal. It’s disputed that he would hate slavery as the war progressed. He was in a difficult situation when Virginia succeeded. He did the unthinkable and stook with the union. His family disowned him for this and jeb Stuart his student wrote he wanted Thomas hung. Thomas would prove to be a great general in the west to the point that grant and Sherman would get a rivalry with Thomas. Thomas aka the rock of chickumaga wasn’t given too much credit by the south for being a traitor or by the north as a southern spy. He’s the only general to destroy an army in a battle in the civil war, he’s didn’t lose a battle in the civil war. He was complete opposite of grant and Sherman for being a defensive general and grant and Sherman took it as cautious. In one incident grant was gonna fire Thomas for advancing too slowly on general hood but Thomas was having his men ready and it paid off where Thomas destroyed hood. When Thomas died Grant went to his funeral and was shocked Thomas family didn’t go to his funeral. Grant said Thomas was one of America’s best in all times

    The Anaconda Plan was actually increasingly problematic for the Federal Government's political battle. Despite being logistically expedient, it is normally held that a country cannot blockade itself. While the Union government still held that the South was still a part of the country, just in rebellion, the blockade betrayed that, and kind of showed that the Southern Secession was unfortunately more than just a small rebellion led by a ruling minority that could be put down with popular Southern support.

    In my opinion it does matter to know how slaves were sold/taken from Africa. I think it's important to know how things like that happen so us as a human society don't repeat the sins of the past. It's important to know how events led up to slavery in the United States. Just like it's important to know how Stalin, Hitler, and so many others came to power and what they did. It's important to know the little things in history that led to major and catastrophic events in history so that we don't make the same mistakes.

      It’s all wrong and all important to understand. You can’t look solely at the U.S. as the only people that were doing bad things. You won’t learn from that what you are supposed to learn, and history will repeat itself. It all matters and it’s all repugnant

    • @spiderman9140
      @spiderman9140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think he's addressing the way that some people use that fact to deflect some blame from US slave owners. When we're looking at the history of US Slavery it's pretty shitty to say "we tolerated the slavery of millions of people." then say BTW they were originally sold by people of their own color. as if that excuses the first fact.
      It is absolutely important to learn about all the worst historical atrocities so we keep a record of who the shittiest people are and how they fucked over the human race, so that hopefully we select against that kind of stuff as we make more of ourselves. But when we're talking about US slavery, the fact that American slaves were suffering horrible shit at the hands of white slave owners is not offset morally by the fact that other Africans sold their ancestors 200 years ago. Which is what I think VTH was getting at.

    • @Ironica82
      @Ironica82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@spiderman9140 From my experience online, the point of slaves being sold to Americans is usually brought up because of the constant image of how evil we are and how nice Africa was beforehand. So, mostly, we bring up that fact to show that their lives were not a peaceful utopia before taken onto a slave ship and that slavery is not just a white man thing (tiss one of the oldest things to do with the losers of any battle). Of course, people also need to learn the difference between US slavery and other types of slavery throughout history (as a lot of times, it was a way to pay back your debts instead of throwing you into the street and having you defend for yourself).
      Also, people keep forgetting that there were slaves of all type (Irish slaves were actually cheaper than African slaves).

      That's exactly correct, and I think he mentioned it in his previous reaction to these videos; I'm not all the way through this one yet, so I don't know if he mentions it again. But the articles used to refer to the US absolutely did change from "these" to "the" after the Civil War, which reflected a more "American" identity, rather than a confederation of "New Yorkers", "South Carolinans", "Virginians", and "Rhode Islanders", etc, which had developed in the wake of the Civil War. You could say that the Civil War was America's forging-fire, where we went into it a bunch of states, and came out as one nation.
