No one mentions this in civil war videos but an underrated general in this war that was viewed as a traitor to the south and suspicious in the north was George H Thomas. George H Thomas was such a great general. Wasn’t respected like grant or Sherman because he had no political support. From the north and was hated by the south. Jeb Stuart wanted to have George hanged. George was highly effective in the west. He’s the only general in the civil war to not lose a battle and virtually destroyed a southern army in the west in Nashville. Great general. The rock of chickamarra. He accepted blacks into his army while Sherman refused them

My mom's side is southern and my perspective my whole life is how tragic it was that Lincoln passed away prior to reconstruction. He would have done so much more for black Americans first. Also though, he didn't hate the south, he literally fought the war to keep the south as he felt them important. Why he stands as one of the greatest presidents in my opinion is he is one of the only men in history that could fight a war on principles he believed while loving those he fought. Doesn’t surprise me, he wasn’t the type to ever complain. Dude wrote his autobiography after finding out he had stage 4 throat cancer and only because the 18th century Bernie Madoff had ripped him off and he didn’t want to leave his family destitute. He hung on, in excruciating pain I must add, just long enough to finish it and died days later. He was a truly remarkable person.

General Grant became the first person since George Washington to hold the rank of General of the Army in 1865, retaining it until he became President in 1869. He was succeeded by Sherman, who himself was succeeded by Sheridan in 1885. The most recent person to be General of the Army was General Omar Bradley, who received that rank in 1950, shortly after Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur.

I watch a lot of these Civil War videos because I enjoy the history and whenever they reference the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, they never include even so much as a sentence to make it clear that these amendments weren't nearly enough to bring Black Americans into freedom. Some history reactors even fail to mention it. "It was clear the fight for equality would continue" is doing sooo much heavy lifting. The army has definitely simplified ranks over time. No more tech-sergeants for example. But they still have some tricks. I couldn't be made Sergeant at one point when it was desired by the powers that be, so I was laterally promoted to Corporal. Other E-4s were above me in time in service, but now I was technically above them as a Non-Comissioned Officer E-4. Lincoln just using the system to get his boy Grant where he wants him. Tech Sergeants stopped being used before you were born in both the Army (1948) and Marine Corps (1958), and you weren't Air or Space force, as they don't use plain old corporal. Getting promoted to SGT of any kind from PFC is impossible in any condition but combat, and I doubt you saw that kind of action, if any at all. I think it is actually very important to fill in any gaps or misconceptions and expand on popular history content with more detail or context in the popular history scene on TH-cam. Your channel is a great example of how reaction channels contribute to the discussion and help people put things in perspective. If you can engage kids and some adults to learn and love history than it is very valuable. I would say historical education is at an all-time Peak in terms of quality and engagement. Keep up the great work.

My great great grandfather was in one of the union regiments in the area, and he told my grandfather that if anyone every tells you that they were at Appomattox that afternoon they are lying to you. He said that Grant and Lee went to a house that was away from all of the soldiers to have the surrender and that 99% of the soldiers were elsewhere, including him.

As a fellow Ohioan (Columbus) I had the privilege of doing a project on Sherman back in school years ago. I still say one can certainly make the argument that Sherman is one of if not THE most influential people in US history in determining the flow of our countries events as much as other figures such Lincoln, Grant, Washington etc… Not only did he talk Grant out of quitting like you mentioned prior but without his capture of Savanah and Atlanta, Lincoln very likely looses the re election bid and his successor cuts a deal with the Confederates. Crazy to think about how out timeline changes if either of those events with Grant or Lincoln play out. Just my opinion but pretty neat to think about. Nice to see ya give him some well deserved recognition. Keep up the great work!!!

As a native myself I can say I agree and respect how Parker replied to Lee. Yes technically We were “Americans” first I guess but at that point there were natives who believed in the colonization of the lands and others who were just happy enough to at least be civil with the colonies, obviously some never wanted anything to do with any of the colonies but that’s a whole other story! I put my hands up to you sir, osiem❤️❤️🤲🏼 also love the content Chris, if you see this I’m currently trying to watch all of your videos!!!

If you have more resources of course you’re gunna look like you know how to supply your men better. Grant was fantastic, but better than anything Lee did? I’d argue winning outnumbered pitched battles is more impressive than strategically supply and movement outside of battle

    • @TheUndyingCrystal

@@fredbarker9201 At the same time, you also have to consider the stance that a lot of Lee's victories weren't necessarily because of great manuevers or anything Lee did.
The Union's incompetent leadership hurt them far more than Lee ever did, and one wonders if Lee would've ever truly distinguished himself if someone like Grant had helmed the northern offensive in the first place.

Oh, we'll rally 'round the flag boys, we'll rally once again,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
And we'll gather from the hillside, we'll gather from the plain!
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
    Chorus:
The Union forever! Hurrah boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitors and up with the star!
While we rally 'round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
Oh, we're springing to the call of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
And we'll fill the vacant ranks with a million freedmen more!
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
    (Chorus)
We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true, and brave,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
And although they may be poor, not a man shall be a slave.
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
    (Chorus)
So we're springing up the call from the East and West!
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
And we'll hurl the rebel crew from the land we love best!
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
For Lincoln and Johnson! Hurrah boys, hurrah!
Down with the rebellion and on with the war!
While we rally 'round the cause boys, we rally in our might,
Singing the holy cause of freedom!

      Confederate Version:
Our flag is proudly floating on the land and on the main,
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
Beneath it oft we've conquered and we'll conquer oft again!
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
      Chorus:
Our Dixie forever! She's never at a loss
Down with the eagle and up with the cross!
While we rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again!
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
Our gallant boys have marched to the rolling of the drums.
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!
And the leaders in charge cry out, "Come, boys, come!"
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
      (Chorus)
They have laid down their lives on the bloody battle field.
Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!
Their motto is resistance - "To the tyrants never yield!"
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
      (Chorus)
While our boys have responded and to the field have gone,
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
Our noble women have also aided them at home,
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!
Jeff Davis and the Confederacy, they're never at a loss!
Down with the eagle and up with the cross!
While we rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again!
Shout, shout the Battle Cry of Freedom!

This is random, but what the hay.
    Top Three Presidents of All-Time.
    1) George Washington - He turned down a monarchy, and set the presidence for all future presidencies.
    2) Thomas Jefferson - Not only did he spearhead the Declaration of Independence, he also played a huge role in forging modern American politics for generations to come. Oh. And he doubled the size of The United States, on the cheap. (Napolian just needed some $$$!)
    3) Abraham Lincoln - Despite all odds, he helped us finally tackle the 800lbs gorilla in the room. Since 1776, it had been kicked down the road.
