"No Taxation Without Representation" was such a brilliant rallying cry.
Firstly it rhymes, has a poetic rhythm, and is easy to remember.
But each class heard in that what they needed to hear. The poor, who were needed as cannon fodder, heard the "taxation" part.
The wealthy elites, who would have to bankroll and organise all this, heard the "representation" part. They wanted a seat at the table... which they'd use to carve out tax loopholes for themselves and enrich themselves further like the nobility in the motherland had done for centuries.

John Adams' defense of the Boston "Massacre" soldiers is one of my favorite parts of the Revolutionary War narrative. Even those accused of the most heinous crimes are entitled to presumed innocence, effective counsel, and due process in America.

Liberty's Kids, a children's historical cartoon, actually had a surprisingly in-depth explanation on the horrors of being tarred and feathered. In particular they visit a victim whose bedridden and in horrible pain after the tar burned his clothes onto his body.😬

As a Brit, it's nice to hear you giving us a shout in this topic properly. Even being British, what we learned about the Revolution was surprisingly pro-American. Obviously we were out of order in places, but we were trying to be more reasonable than I think most people realise

    • @Superhero18
      @Superhero18 ปีที่แล้ว

And as an American, I don't think the reasonableness applies. For starters, they're the ones who created the colonies in the first place, and then gave them the autonomy. They didn't have to send troops to defend the colonies, nor did the colonies ask.
And then they want to tax the colonies, but not give representation as well? Talk about having their cake, and eating it too. We were 200% justified in the revolutionary war, and the victory is one of the greatest victories in human history.

There’s often an assumption that the Americans knew the ground better because they’re local, but the British were successful at Brandywine because they did know the ground better than the Continentals, and were able to make use of fords over the Brandywine that Washington didn’t know were there. Most of the Americans fighting were just as unfamiliar with the ground as the British, just depended on who best utilised the intelligence

As an American currently taking APUSH, I’m mildly surprised, but also really glad you encouraged us to look at this from Britain’s point of view, because I can confirm that we were only taught from the colonies’ point of view. What you say actually does make complete sense. I never tried to consider that the British were actually kinda right with their intentions, just… their execution of the taxes could use some work. Thanks for that :)

Well I think the main issue was Lord Nord an the people in Parliament at the time bout sides wanted a better outcome it just wasn't going to happen with those kind of people weilding power. And from recent history I think we can all agree some people do not need to be in a power position whatsoever. Now we may disagree on who those people are but I mean it's pretty damn clear throughout history you got people who take advantage in America just had enough of them people.

I like watching these kinds of reactions, because there's so much more to history than what I learned when I was in school. I only learned the basic things but was never told anything more that showed both sides of the story, so to speak. Some of the stuff I learned was instead through history TV shows, or videos like these. I also watched the musical 1776, which I find is a great started to how America began away from the battlefield, and how they just talked about issues like the declaration of Independence and other issues. I don't know how historically accurate it is, but it gave me more of a human view of the founding fathers, rather than the myths we're always told they were.

@@kirancox6123 Hi, you are quite right Louis XIV is the longest reigning monarch. I should have said I was talking about British Monarchs, Elizabeth II then Victoria then George III are the longest reigning British Monarchs. Hope that clarifies this.

Regarding the taxes: Brandon F. did a great video on it. The TL;DR version: The Americans were basically expected to help fund the troops stationed to protect them... which was basically a non existing force (~8k people for all 13 colonies I think)

in regards of the Olive Branch... I think part of the reason the british went "nope", was that not long after, and before a call was made, just that call to arm the volunteers was made, which made the Olive Branch feel quite insencere.

I have been rewatching WW2 in color on Netflix, and one part stands out to me. The decision to relieve Paris by the allied forces. I am very grateful to have been born in America. I am of the opinion that we as a country had to save Paris, as we may not have a country if the French hadn't cleared the Chesapeake and assisted during the Revolutionary War.

Something that Christopher Columbus can be given credit for as a first, he was the first person in recorded history to sail across the ocean without being within view or quick access of land. Everybody else prior in the recorded history of sailing had always been in view of or never more than a couple dozen nautical miles of land.

not to mention his re-discovery marked the first time any permanent european settlement was formed in the americas. While Leif Erikson did land up somewhere in canada he left after a few weeks to months max. And Thorfinn Karlsefni another viking from iceland heard of his travels through Leif's father, Erik the Red, and attempted to actually set up a village there but after about 3 years and increasingly frequent battles with the increasingly less friendly natives they decided they would rather live back in peace with their kinsmen in greenland than try to permanently take over "Vinland" (named as such because its said they arrived at a forest in which every tree bore grapes). But hey, Thorfinn's son Snorri became the first person of european descent to be born in the America's which is cool at least

@oldeskul I think that depends on how you want to define "recorded history".
If we're talking about events we know for certain happened, I'd argue that the Austronesian exploration and settlement of the pacific islands outranks Columbus' journey in both earliness (Beginning well in the thousands BCE) and in impressiveness (They sailed just as far as Columbus did in small canoes, memorised star maps that changed with the seasons, could triangulate the locations of islands that they didn't know existed by observing the behaviour of birds, could take bearings by dipping their hand into the water and checking currents, etc).
Of course, if when you say "recorded" history you literally mean history of which we have detailed records regarding specific expeditions, then I think you're totally right that Columbus was the first.

Dawes and Revere were also not shouting the entire time during their rides - as that would have drawn undue attention to them. They were going to safe houses that they knew to alert the militia and trying to warn Adams and Hancock and others.
