Poor Fabius. The only Roman leader intelligent enough to not play to Hannibal's game, the only leader to be a genuine threat to his campaign up to that point... humiliated for being "cowardly".
To be fair the reason the Romans disliked him were understandable. His strategy was situationally sound but just not doing anything as your lands are destroyed and your enemy runs rampant will never sit well. It was the best plan in a terrible circumstances but it was impossible for the romans to stomach.
Having limited terms while playing waiting game is not helping him at all. The best impossible strategy
But right after Cannae Fabius was back in power and this time he had more support as he now seemed to be the only one to actually have any idea on how to deal with Hannibal. Well until Scipio proposed to strike Hannibal where it really hurts

Fun fact about Cannae; in terms of casualties per day, the number incurred by Hannibal would not be surpassed until the Battle of The Somme, in WW1. This means that in the odd 2100 years after Cannae, in the continent of Europe, no one managed to kill as many men in one day as Hannibal, and it would take inventions such as the machine-gun and the howitzer to inflict them.

@@mnxs Imo its a mix of being one of those corny motivational speeches hannibal gave from time to time(the general he was talking to was named gisco, so its like yeah they have many people, but they dont have YOU), and sure there are many romans but none of them have our civilization and our name(gisco was a common name because it was after a great carthaginian general). The fact that Hannibal and Napoleon were both defeated by the enemy running away says something
Defeated is a little strong of a word in this case
A wise man knows when to flee and when to fight. Beside that, shame and the desire to regain your honor might also be a factor. Plus sometimes life itself is just poetic.
Both were great tacticians, but both had strategies that needed fighting, because that was what they knew, their enemies, under pressure, always realized they needed to adapt to survive, Napoleon and Hannibal always tried winning wars by winning the most battles, however, when they encountered a counter to their "strategy", ( guerrilla warfare, hit and run, buying time, scorched earth) both struggled, since their strategy was actually by the most part just using tactics to win, and if you can't count on that as a fact, their time always ended up running out
While that's fairly true about Napoleon, Hannibal did lose to Scipio in a 1v1 at Zama. So he wasn't untouchable, just really good at planning.
Well, Napoleon didn't win 5 decisive major battles against his enemy (trebia, trasimene, gergovium, x2 for cannae) , decimating a third of their adult male population. He only managed to win a pyrrhic victory at Borodino, in which he abstained from any tactical pursuits and just threw his men at the enemy.
To all those asking why it takes so long for Oversimplified to make a video, bear in mind that he does everything; the writing, animating, editing, voice acting etc, all by himself. And it still comes out this good.

the Character of Flaminius is an interesting one. Yes for the purpose of the video he's only mentioned as the consul that got killed in battle with hannibal, but in the time he was consul he was also responsible for many of the first reforms in roman society to improve the quality of life of the lower classes and limit the power of the roman upper class. Despite being an arrogant hot-head, he was a pretty based guy
Napoleon and Hannibal both being troubled by enemies that 'ran away' showcases how 'fight or flight' is truly valid. Both are good responses.
Napoleon was hugely invested in military tactics. He knew everything about Hannibal, Julius Caesar and possibly Senator Maximus' cautious warfare too

The fact Hannibal’s tactics are still taught today at places like West Point truly puts into perspective how much of a genius he was
He was a great general despite some mistakes
But at the end of the day, Rome still stood
And Carthage fell one day before it ever did
That's the tragedy of a military genius practically raised to hate Rome and to want to completely destory them
Despite all the wounds he left on them, he helped them learn and become even stronger
The Roman strategy was insanely easy to play around. I’m sure these tactics were inevitable. Good on Hannibal I guess.
Ultimately he also serves as an example of the saying "Amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics."

What’s funny is that despite Cannae being a colossal military defeat for the Roman’s, the death count still wasn’t as bad as the storms in the first Punic wars
It worse, because those that died in battle not only lost their lives to the enemies, but also all their equipments, armours, weapons, money, supplies,...... All very valuable stuff in the ancient world.
With 80.000 dead heavy infantry, their enemies could raise and arms SEVERAL new armies. As oppose to loss of men to natural disaster, in which at least their enemies wouldn't have such an upperhand because all valuables were lost, not fall into their hands to use against you.
So yeah, i'd say Cannae was worse for the Romans.

Also , I can only guess that, even if the storms killed more people, not all deaths were soldiers. Many of them had to be common rowers.
Meaning that, from a strictly military standpoint, Hannibal's carnage was far worse.

@@Nobody77246but Hannibal was stuck in Italy without a proper base. The loot they had might have been a burden rather than blessing. They would have to allocate more resources to protect their baggage train. Not to mention since the Romans were defeated in their territory, they had the opportunity to recover the remains.

Try to write 30 minutes of a well researched and entertaining historical video in 3 months. After you fail that, try to animate it in 3 months. After you fail that, try to properly voice it in, let's say a few weeks. After you fail that also, go ahead and edit it all together, music, effects, transitions, and other editing effects in 3 months. After you once again fail, come back and tell everyone how he's "taking too long".

Many authors have written classics in such times or shorter. It's not like his videos are all factual, a lot of it is speculative or putting the most saucy possibility in as fact. Remember Regulus returning to Carthage to get killed? Almost certainly didn't happen. But it makes a fun story. No one asked him to do better animations, we don't care. Do more content, keep it in his style, and a video every 3 months would be great for his level of success but even twice a year is fine. Maybe a Christmas in July and Christmas release would be fine. Reminds me of Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History series, “The Celtic Holocaust” about how traumatic the Celtic raids were, even many centuries later.
I don’t know if it was related to Hannibal, but when Roman had to pay them off, the Celtic Chieftain demanded a specific weight of gold and/or silver placed on a scale. When the Romans complained, the chieftain threw his sword on his side of the scale and said “Woe to the vanquish”.
Also Romans viewed the Celtics as terrifying barbarians because they were “less civilized”. Sure they were less disciplined and tactical, but the unpredictability, size, strength, and lighter hair/skin was scary to the Romans, and even more so when dealing with Germanic tribes.

Imagine being a roman soldier in the middle of that formation. You run forward with the rest of the legion, then suddenly stop. You can't tell what's going on. You've been standing for a good while now, barely moving forward or backwards. You're sweating and tired from exhaustion. Then you notice that your fellow soldiers are slowly getting close to you that there's barely any breathing room. Then you find yourself getting squeezed on all sides. There's some commotion from your fellow legion, then thats when you hear it. Screams and panic getting closer and closer.
Really more of a Bloodbath of Cannae.

Dan Carlin has a great trilogy on the Punic Wars on Hardcore History where he talks about some of these aspects of the human experience. It’s absolutely wild when you stop and think about it. Don’t get me wrong, Oversimplified does the best job of anyone I’ve ever seen at making history fun and engaging while clearly doing his homework on historical accuracy. However, it’s easy for us as viewers to get caught up in the flow of the story and never stop to consider what it might’ve been like to experience some of these things first hand.

I like the fact that Oversimplified makes the Second Punic War look like a true movie with incredible cinematic values. It is so engaging and serious, unlike his previous funny and lightly toned clips
P/s: I guess when it comes to one of the most devastating one-day battle casualties of all time, you cannot treat it lightly in any way.
I totally agree, though it's still really funny and the comedic timing is perfect.
IMO he does that regularly, not just with this series. He did it even better with the American Civil War

Fun fact Flaminius was famous for his brutal victories against the Celts and before the Battle of Lake Trasimene Hannibal told to his Celts that they were fighting against him and they couldn’t wait to get their hands on him, so much so that after the battle Hannibal wasn’t able to find ANY PIECE of his body to give him a proper burial
Despite the propaganda about Hannibal the Romans invented, he usually gave the enemy leaders a proper burial. He couldn't find Flaminius's body due to it likely being cut up for trophies by the Celts. Still pretty honorable despite how brutal ancient warfare was; thank goodness we're modern.
