Mage is that class I secretly wish I'd mained for most of the last 6 years I've played. This guide was excellent! Your voice is really relaxing too, you've earned my sub :D
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I was in that same boat as you through MoP and again through WoD, wishing I had mained a Mage. Then when I finally gained access to Legion's Beta, I tested out most of the classes/specs and ultimately decided to (finally) "main" a Mage in Legion because I enjoyed all three specs for numerous reasons. It was a fantastic decision that I'm still glad I made! Of course, I get bored of Mage every now and again, leading to binge-playing an alt of some kind, but I always come back to my Mage at the end of the day. Thanks again! :)
I'd like to give you a BIG thumbs up for this guide - the FIRST one that is ACTUALLY helpful for real beginners (not people who've played fire mages for 12 years and are just looking for ways to optimize their DPS further). I've boosted a mage to 100 having never played one beyond level 20 before, and this was just amazingly helpful and explained everything so clearly and logically - now I feel ready to go! :-) This video made me sub by the way.
Thank you so much for this! I just started playing WoW 2 weeks ago and decided to use my mage boost. I wanted to learn how to play fire mage and my friend sent me this video. I learned so many things within just the first 10 minutes. This has been incredibly helpful and informative. You've earned my subscription. I'll be coming back to watch the rest of the videos too. Thank you!
Keep up the great videos! I love how you provide in depth details that most guides dont have, but still find a way to be concise. I subbed and look foward to more great content, thank you :)
Thank you very much compliment and for the subscription! I'm really glad you like the videos! Being concise while still providing the information I'd really like to convey is a battle that I constantly struggle with, so it truly means A LOT to me to have someone say that the info I'm providing is "concise". If turned loose... I'd ramble on for hours about minor details that mean very little xD Thanks again!
I dont mind u babbling, this, and the 2 other mage vids, is the best out there. im back after 4 years break, and wanna get my loved mage going again. this gave me all i needed and more. u made me get back in the game with the precise idea on what mage is all about in all 3 specs, plus a few hints that really made a diffrence. love and kisses. STAY STRONG
Thank you very much for the kind words and I'm glad that you liked my Mage guides! I only just recently reached the 1,000 subscribers milestone and I was pretty stoked about it (still am) because when I released my Frost mage guide over the summer, the channel had something like just 500 subscribers. So, things seem to be changing relatively quickly, which is very exciting! :)
Hey there ! i just wanted to thank you for youre clear video and youre calm voice. Also for not moving/jumping arround all the time when you talk like you see in many other vids, its realy irritating to watch :) This video has been very helpfull to me ! i play frost and i want to give fire a go, and this vid is making it a lot easier ;) Thx and greetings from the Netherlands !
Greetings, to you in the Netherlands! What an awesome compliment; thank you very much! It's always pleasing to hear when someone likes one of my videos, but it is orders of magnitude more satisfying to hear that they're also finding a legitimate/functional use out of my video to apply to their own game-play (as opposed to wasting time for entertainment purposes or just being background noise). I must say though, you're the first person to mention my lack of "fidgeting" movement from my character during my videos and I'm glad that someone has finally noticed! I know that whenever I used to look up guides, I'd often find myself watching the person's character flying all over the place. When that happened, I was still hearing what they had to say, but I was rarely actually *listening* to what it was they were saying because of the visual distraction - a waste of the creator's time and the viewer's if the time spent viewing is worthless (in my opinion anyways). So, I sort of make it a point for myself when I make these guides to keep my hands away from my keyboard and only using my mouse as a sort of laser pointer. haha xD Anyways, thanks again, and good luck with Fire! p.s. Fire currently is my personal favorite mage spec in Antorus :)
Thank you very much! At the moment, I unfortunately do not have any guides for other classes. BUT, I certainly would like to create some in the near future and I have the intentions of doing so!
IronStar Gaming I really wish you would create more guides. Trying to find something useful on any class without it feeling rushed or only about “ how to do this raid” is very difficult. The nature of YT I guess. But if you play any other classes a guide like this would be most welcome! :)
your guides are really helpful to a returning player that has never played a caster. Thank you, subbed. Which Mage spec do you regularly play or recommend to new players for mostly Mythic dungeons/LFR raids? I'm only level 14 atm but have heirlooms and looking to learn a spec all the way through. I have been playing arcane but it's mostly due to one shotting so Basically i don't know what i like yet.
Thank you, and I’m glad you like the guides! Right now, I’m playing both Frost and Fire a pretty even amount. I would probably recommend Frost to you to level as and to at least get you started once you hit level cap. But, Fire is also a very good choice if you decide that you like it more. Arcane is gonna get a little bit more difficult to level as once you reach higher levels - due to ramp up time and mana usage. But, it also can be a good choice if you prefer it over the other two specs. Hope this helps!
I would have to disagree with the stat priority, as mastery is a solid top slot pick for all the high end / end game fire mages. Where crit falls below even haste in priority.
I would have to agree with your disagreement about stats. The value of crit definitely falls off and begins favoring mastery (even versatility) as a character’s gear improves - especially when using talents like firestarter and kindling. My own Mage currently favors more mastery at the moment. However, this guide was created with newer players in mind. That being said, I’m assuming that those “new players” aren’t in high end gear pushing top-level end game content. In that case, the odds are that crit will be better for them, both as a high priority stat and as a sort of crutch to lean on as they’re learning the basics to the spec’s rotation. Thank you for the comment though! It’s quite possible that others may come through with a question/input similar to yours, so I hope this helped to clear things up for those people.
really helpful video, I have just started playing wow as a fire mage and I am really enjoying the spec and this video helped me. but is it important that you buy legion so you can get the artifact weapon? because i have only bought a 6 month subscription. So do you recommend I buy legion aswell?
Firstly, thank you! I love hearing it when people find my videos to be helpful! Now, as far as me telling you whether you should buy Legion or not, it's easy for me to sit here and say that you "should" or "should not" spend your money (because it isn't my money). But, because you've already got a six month subscription, I do recommend that you buy Legion, yes. Because the current game was built to be played at max level 110, you're basically playing an incomplete game until you reach Legion's content - and that could potentially cause you to get bored with the game (or at least, I know I would get bored). As it stands right now, most specs were developed with Legion's "endgame" in mind - that being players upgrading, filling out, and utilizing their artifact weapons is an integral component to how each spec works. So, a very large part of the gameplay for each spec is dependent on the artifact. In my opinion, if it weren't for the artifact weapon system, a lot of the artifact weapon traits that you unlock would have been passives in your spell book or talents already built in to the specs by default. That's mostly why I would suggest purchasing Legion - it'll feel like a more complete and polished game. But, if you're new to WoW and just aren't sure if you want to sink more money into it yet, then there's certainly no harm in taking it slow without Legion for a while! If you're not new and are just coming back, then I would definitely suggest buying Legion because you probably already know what the game is all about. Actually, what I did when I first started playing WoW as a mega noob (back at the start of Mist of Pandaria) was I played around for probably 3-4 months before buying the newest content. I started on the free starter account trial version thing and hung out there for a while just trying to wrap my head around what I could. Then, a month or two later, I took the plunge and bought a 1-month sub and the "battle chest" (included Classic, BC, & WotLK) and I played through that content for a while. But, after another month or so(when I capped at level 80), I caved in and bought Cataclysm and Mist of Pandaria. These days though, now that I'm a full-out WoW nerd, I don't wait quite as long to buy the new stuff... I pre-order the new expansions immediately when they become available... :) Reading back through this, my story there really wasn't of too much relevance to your original question... but I'm too lazy to go back and delete it now. haha In conclusion, because you've already got a 6 month subscription, I do recommend buying Legion if you don't already have it. But, you can still do a lot of stuff in game without it if you choose not to buy it right away. Then you could see how much interest you really take into the game before you decide to buy Legion. Sorry this reply grew so long.... I don't know how I get so long-winded sometimes... But, I hope this helps. Good luck!
IronStar Gaming thanks for the advice and I have bought Legion now and I am really enjoying the new quests and the new weapom as a fire mage but i think its a bit overwelming to be lvl 100, al the new gear and to have al the abbilities is a bit difficult i think. But i am quiet new to the game so I have to learn a lot of things
Good to hear that you're enjoying it so far! Yeah, it can absolutely be overwhelming with all of the new stuff. Just try not to let yourself get overwhelmed from trying to understand everything at once. Focus on the very basics at first, get super comfortable with them, and then the rest of the stuff will just come by practice! But, it's gonna take time. :)
You're welcome! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! That addon that's showing buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns in the middle of my screen is called 'TellMeWhen'. I semi-recently released a video that is Part 1 of 2 about your User Interface in WoW and the first part covers my main UI which is the addon 'ElvUI'. In the coming weeks (following the holidays), I'm hoping to release Part 2 of the series which will specifically cover the addon 'TellMeWhen', so stay tuned for that! :)
Thanks, and I'm glad you liked the video! As for the audio, right before I made a final render of the video, somehow the project's master volume was dialed down a few decibels... but, because of the length of this video and how long it took to render, I was too lazy to fix it. haha xD
So, what I am wondering now, lt's say I get to level 70 or whatever (long way to go but whatever) can I just swap to arcane or frost any time I want? Or am I stuck at fire if I go with that?
Thanks so much! Just a question on single target rotation. If you get a heating up proc with a fireball, you're supposed to cast fire blast (to generate hot streak) and finish ur 2nd fireball cast with an instant pyro. I get this. What if after u get a heating up proc with a fireball, but u have no charge of phoenix flames or fireblast?? Do you just cast another fireball hoping that it will crit? If it doesnt its going to much up ur heating up.. right? And since u have to save these charges for combustion, u will have quite a long window where ur left with no option but only to cast fireball...?
These situations are shitty, but with good enough gear you should be having about 60 to 65% crit. You are more likely going to crit the second cast too. Do not save too much for combustion, phoenix flames not on Cd is a loss of damage, i usually start preparing for combustion 30 sec before it and have 4 insta crits going into it.
To reiterate most of what has already stated in the other reply, the situation you've described is definitely a possible one, but it's not as likely to occur as it might seem (thanks to things like Enhanced Pyrotechnics). In the case that it does happen, you just have to take it on the chin and keep going. Also, with regards to saving Fire Blast and Phoenix Flames charges for combustion, try not to dwell too much on that concept. The idea of "saving" some charges to go into combustion mostly just means "don't blow everything you've got right before combustion and then have nothing instant to cast during combustion". Sitting on 3 Phoenix Flames charges (or even 3 Fire Blast charges) could hurt your damage more than something like having only one charge of each ability when going into combustion. Hope this answer helped clear up any confusion!
The fire orbs floating around Fire Mages' heads are due to the Artifact weapon. They're supposed to represent charges of Phoenix Flames given by the artifact ability. When you have the weapon, you can toggle this visual effect on or off by talking to the NPC who's located directly to the right side of the mission board in the Mage order hall.
Rob Heller So, unless u really like the challenge u might want to get closer to 900 or over before starting Argus content. That and using Frost there will help significantly as it will slow most mobs while u deal damage. A little more survivability than Fire. However, once u get up around 930+, FLAME ON!
Master Zhao Master Zhao thanks for your comment. I've toughed it out as fire. But brought the frost guardian with me. Ilvl909 now starting to get a lot easier.
Can you tell me which mage spec is the best this patch?I mained arcane for 3 expansion but in legion it feels so weak.I am 925 iLvL and in my basic rotation i do 500k-700k dps for some reason.Am i doing something wrong or Arcane is much weaker than the other specs????
It's still too early to tell which mage spec is "best" in this patch. But, for a way-too-early guess, my guess is that Fire will outpace and outscale the other two specs. However, Frost still remains very powerful in single target scenarios while Arcane has incredible single target burst and an unrivaled ability to on demand mass AOE nuke (via Rune of Power, Arcane Power, and spamming Arcane Explosion as fast as your fingers and latency will allow). Already in Antorus, logs are showing that each mage spec has at least two fights where it's far superior to its two sister specs. So, I suggest that you play the spec that you enjoy the most - not the "OP" spec simply because it's supposed to be OP. That said, an iLvl 925 Arcane mage should probably be able to sustain higher dps than what you've listed. Obviously, Legendaries, set bonuses, trinkets, artifact levels, etc. will all have varying affects on your damage output, but I'd still guess that you're current damage isn't quite where it should be. If you haven't already seen it (incoming shameless plug), I do have an Arcane Mage guide posted on my channel and it is up to date with the most recent patch. I recommend you check it out to see if there is actually something that you might be missing. Just don't get too discouraged. I played Arcane and Fire throughout much of WoD and became very very comfortable with Arcane towards the end of the expansion. And then everything changed with the new mastery. I remember hating Arcane at first in Legion because I kept trying to play it like it used to be played during WoD. But, once I forced myself to try and figure it out, maximizing the number of spells I cast with 4 Arcane charges by mastering my mana usage in between cooldowns, it all started to flow much more smoothly. Soon, my cooldowns began naturally aligning with one another, I wasn't running out of mana, and it all just "worked" together very nicely. Once that happened, I sat Fire on the bench and Arcane became my main spec for something like 5 months throughout Legion (through most of Emerald Nightmare and halfway through the Nighthold). If you do check out the Arcane mage guide, please let me know if you were able to solve anything or not in the comments to that video! Good luck!
Wow i wasnt expecting an answer so quickly and that detailed so i thank you a lot for that.I have seen your Arcane Mage guide its the video i first watched on your channel and it was so good i checked the others too.Maybe i pointed out my dps wrong so i am sorry for that.Following your rotation and your guide(which i do since i watched your guide) when i burst i get 1.26m dps but after my burst which follows the basic rotation for some reason it falls off so much like from 1.26-900k-800k and goes down to 500k sometimes which is really bad.To be honest i think i am doing something wrong myself and its not the spec but fire seems a lot more reliable and i want to contest other dps classes that's why i asked.Note:(I have only 1 legendary which is the the ring that says when you counterspell it gives you some haste).
I'm hoping to release a video dedicated entirely to ElvUI and TellMeWhen (including strings and profiles to import) in the near future, so stay tuned for that! :)
Sure is! Though, I still wouldn’t recommend using Pyromaniac to players who aren’t using the T21 set bonuses - but it’s still not a bad choice anymore if your crit level is decent.
Yeah, I find Firestarter a dead talent after 90% obviously, its just like Cindaria's. Good while questing though. The middle talent is amazing for aoe or M+ too.
Probably still too early to tell. But, so far it is definitely looking like a solid contender to be the top mage spec in Antorus. However, at this time, Frost's single target damage still appears to be superior to Fire's.
It was a visual effect caused by the Fire Mage Artifact weapon that was used throughout Legion. They indicated the current number of charges of Phoenix Flames that were available (0-3).
If you really want to play fire, then play fire! It's true that you'll definitely do less damage than fire mages who do have the (situationally) BiS legendaries, but unless you're pushing top tier content where it's imperative that you be doing as much damage as possible, it really wont be a huge deal. I always recommend that people play the spec that they find to be the most fun! The damage will come naturally if you truly dive deeply into the spec.
In the video description, you'll find a link to my website (it's in development). Once there, navigate to the "interfaces" page and the information that you find there should at least get you started. You'll find links to download the AddOns and even my own personal Mage's profile strings for the addons ElvUI and TellMeWhen. I'm working on creating an instructional video and also applying some final touches to the website to make this process easier and more straightforward, but this is what we've got to work with for now. Hope this helps.
You need to script what you're going to say in the vids, a lot of erms and ahhs and just pointless talking. Go watch Preach to use as an example, doesn't waffle on in his guides, just get the info out in the clearest way possible. This could have been 15 minutes long.
Using erms and ahhs is a pretty hard habit to break. Even with a script it can be difficult. For many people they're pausing words becuase your brain is just working to fast and you try to slow it down. I used to be really bad about this but did break the habit. That being said its still a good guide and could it have been shorter? Sure but the guide has character and is very informative.

Thank you
I'm glad the guide helped you! :)
This was helpful, even for a low level FM like myself (30s). I'm finally getting the hang of it. What would you use for BG? Any set rotation?

Reading back through this, my story there really wasn't of too much relevance to your original question... but I'm too lazy to go back and delete it now. haha
In conclusion, because you've already got a 6 month subscription, I do recommend buying Legion if you don't already have it.
Hello Friend! Thanks for you Guide. Can u tell me what addon you use for showing you spells so big in the middle of the screen during infight?
You're welcome! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!
That addon that's showing buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns in the middle of my screen is called 'TellMeWhen'. I semi-recently released a video that is Part 1 of 2 about your User Interface in WoW and the first part covers my main UI which is the addon 'ElvUI'. In the coming weeks (following the holidays), I'm hoping to release Part 2 of the series which will specifically cover the addon 'TellMeWhen', so stay tuned for that! :)
Great guide for a noob fire mage like myself. Audio seemed quiet to me, even when turning it up. But lot of great info!
What addon is that for the buffs/debuffs? Basically the entire HUD lol
What's that melody at 14:00min ?
Hey thanks so much for the reply!!!! Really helpful
I'm new to the Fire Mage, love the spec so far, but how to you get those fire orbs around your head? I see everyone have them..
Hey how can I show the tick dmg number on the tmw ignite thing ? I don't want to download the hole tmw profile I only want this xD sick video btw
Is Phoenix Flames not in the game any more? I don't see it.
p.s. I'm new
edit: oh, I need Felo'melorn
Is there a way I can get your ELVUI string and social security number? Looks so good!
Yeah sure! Lemme just put it in the mail! And are you talking about the UI that looks good or me?
What is the soundtrack playing at the start of this video please ?
It's part of the "Canticle of Sacrifice" music from Legion - it can be heard at the Lion's Rest memorial in Stormwind.
Ilvl 840 returning player struggling really hard in Argus. Wish I had a tank follower to tank these mobs for me..
Good luck!
Wow i wasnt expecting an answer so quickly and that detailed so i thank you a lot for that.I have seen your Arcane Mage guide its the video i first watched on your channel and it was so good i checked the others too.Maybe i pointed out my dps wrong so i am sorry for that.Following your rotation and your guide(which i do since i watched your guide) when i burst i get 1.26m dps but after my burst which follows the basic rotation for some reason it falls off so much like from 1.26-900k-800k and goes down to 500k sometimes which is really bad.To be honest i think i am doing something wrong myself and its not the spec but fire seems a lot more reliable and i want to contest other dps classes that's why i asked.Note:(I have only 1 legendary which is the the ring that says when you counterspell it gives you some haste).
whats the addon you use to show ilvl?
It's called "DejaCharacterStats"
what addon do you use for timers
volume?
How does your Blazing Barrier auto cast/recast?
It doesn't. It's sort of just my "fidget button" that I press all the time. :)
dude you head 3 falme orb ski,ll ? plss help me
you head 3 flamer orb name dude plss
Thanks M8
You're very welcome! I'm glad you liked the video! :)
is it possible to get your elvui string :)
I'm hoping to release a video dedicated entirely to ElvUI and TellMeWhen (including strings and profiles to import) in the near future, so stay tuned for that! :)
Pyromaniac is actually good and great for T21
Fire king in Antoras?
Probably still too early to tell. But, so far it is definitely looking like a solid contender to be the top mage spec in Antorus. However, at this time, Frost's single target damage still appears to be superior to Fire's.
Is this still viable for bfa?
The basic idea of how Fire works is largely the same in BfA as it was in Legion. So yes, it is still mostly viable for BfA.
Why is There 3 fireballs on your head?
It was a visual effect caused by the Fire Mage Artifact weapon that was used throughout Legion. They indicated the current number of charges of Phoenix Flames that were available (0-3).
i really want to play fire mages, have 5 mages legendary but non is the wrist or waist, im fked
what to do?
If you really want to play fire, then play fire! It's true that you'll definitely do less damage than fire mages who do have the (situationally) BiS legendaries, but unless you're pushing top tier content where it's imperative that you be doing as much damage as possible, it really wont be a huge deal. I always recommend that people play the spec that they find to be the most fun! The damage will come naturally if you truly dive deeply into the spec.
shard and prydaz are good too. If you got no waist jsut stack crit, use kindling and you will be ok.
lol ramble away ty for the vid
how can i download your addon
