  • CHECK OUT MORE DETAILS BELOW!
    This guide will provide you with the information that you need to play your Frost Mage in Patch 7.2.5, 7.3.0, & 7.3.2 with a high degree of competency, no matter your skill level!
    Yes, the video and the thumbnail say Patch 7.2.5 while the title reads "7.3", but frost did not change whatsoever between 7.2.5, 7.3.0, or 7.3.2, so everything in this video is 100% as accurate as it was on the day of the video's release.
    The voice over and video recording of this video were done "off the cuff", rather than with a script, in order to keep it more conversational, so don't give me too hard of a time! :p
    Hope the guide helps you!

    -----------------------------------
    TALENTS
    Single Target - Very Low Gear:
    15 - Bone Chilling* (or Lonely Winter)
    30 - Shimmer
    45 - Incanter's Flow
    60 - Frozen Touch
    75 - Frigid Winds
    90 - Unstable Magic
    100 - Thermal Void
    Single Target - High End Gear:
    15 - Lonely Winter
    30 - Shimmer
    45 - Incanter's Flow
    60 - Frozen Touch/Splitting Ice
    75 - Frigid Winds
    90 - Unstable Magic
    100 - Thermal Void
    Multi-Target/Cleave - All Gear Levels:
    15 - Lonely Winter
    30 - Shimmer
    45 - Incanter's Flow
    60 - Splitting Ice
    75 - Frigid Winds
    90 - Arctic Gale
    100 - Thermal Void (both Glacial Spike and Comet Storm can be viable in niche situations)
    * Pet usage was not covered in this video, so if you're not comfortable using your elemental, Lonely Winter is a very good alternative.
    ------------------------------------
    STATS:
    1. Crit (while less than 33% - the "shatter cap")
    2. Intellect
    3. Haste
    4. Versatility
    5. Mastery ~= Crit (while greater-than or equal to 33%)
    * This stat priority is a very general set of guidelines.
    * * As with nearly all DPS specs in Legion, secondary stat values/priorities tend fluctuate very frequently. That is why I ALWAYS recommend that players become familiar with and utilize tools like SimulationCraft and "raidbots.com/simbot" in order to determine their specific character's stat weights based on the gear that they are wearing.
    ------------------------------------
    MACROS:
    BLIZZARD
    - Casts Flamestrike or Blizzard (depending on your currently active spec) at the location of your cursor. Combines two identical @cursor macros into one (saving space in your macro window).
    * Note - select the question mark icon. It will dynamically adjust the icon that's displayed:
    #showtooltip
    /cast [spec:2,@cursor]Flamestrike; [spec:3,@cursor]Blizzard
    ICY VEINS
    - Casts Arcane Power, Combustion, or Icy Veins (based on your currently active spec) and also activates on-use item effects (ring and trinket slots):
    #showtooltip
    /cast [spec:1]Arcane Power; [spec:2]Combustion; [spec:3]Icy Veins
    /use 11
    /use 12
    /use 13
    /use 14
    GLACIAL SPIKE / COMET STORM
    - Casts Glacial Spike or Comet Storm if either is talented into:
    #showtooltip
    /cast [talent:7/2]Glacial Spike; [talent:7/3]Comet Storm

      You're quite welcome! And thank you very much for the kind words! I'm happy that you were able to find the video to be so helpful!
      When creating these videos, I always try to break it down as simply as possible to the very basics and core mechanics and then building back up. That way, there's less chance that I ever leave completely new players hanging out to dry. So, that's one reason I spend so much time going over and explaining the little details, why they're important, and how they actually impact what's really going on. And I think that a lot of people really miss that kind of information in most guides. Also, I think that learning the logic and the understanding the reasoning can help both new and more experienced players; so it simultaneously broadens the audience that my videos might appeal to.
      Not that you really needed or wanted to know any of that... I just started typing and typing... haha xD
      Thanks again though!

    I have to say I have watched 3 of your beginner mage videos (fire, frost, arcane) and the amount of instruction and detail is top notch. None of this "let me jam all of the info into 4 min" crap. Please continue the good work! If you play any other classes please make beginner guides for them, if you haven't already. I have learned more from watching your vids than any other WoW youtuber. Nice job!

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! What an awesome comment to read! Thank you very much! I cant express how satisfying it is to receive feedback from viewers that they were able to learn so much from my videos! So, thank you again! :)
      Regarding making other class guides: I actually play every class in the game (or at least have every class leveled to 110) except for Demon Hunter and Paladin - I don't specialize in every spec, but I've at least dabbled in most of the specs. It get's to be WAY too many alts after a while... haha But, I have considered making an Affliction Warlock Guide as it is the spec that I feel next most comfortable with playing - so that I can provide a guide that's up to par with my mage guides.
      But, at this point in Legion's life, the demand is really dropping (quickly) for class/spec guides like my mage guides here. I think that much of the more casual/beginner-oriented player base is just sort of shrugging their shoulders with how things play right now and are simply looking ahead to BfA. Unfortunately, because of the time and work these guides take, I'm not sure if I can justify creating another class guide at the moment.
      BUT, I still might get bored some day and put together another class guide or two before Legion fully runs its course! So, stay tuned, I guess! haha

    The kind of video you're always looking for but practically never find. Mostly you end up with some 14 y/o bashing you 4 minutes with several talents you haven't even heard of and give up on respeccing your alt. But this here is gold, excellent job mate!

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the kind words and I'm really happy that you found the guide to be genuinely helpful! :) It takes me forever to find the time to make these videos but then once I do set aside the time, it takes me even longer to put it all together (because I'm too particular - I think I recorded three different versions of this guide). So, it really means a lot to hear such positive feedback and that the guide is helping people!

      Thank you for your kind words and feedback! When I first started playing WoW (Panda-Land) and the few years after, I always felt like video guides either left too much info out, OR went too far in depth for their audience (people looking for information about a spec that they're unfamiliar with). So, I try to make my guides find a balance between high information density and just the basic info. I usually end up trying to do that by including a lot of the little nuances that you pointed out. So, it makes me very happy that people, even if only a few, pick up on those things (because they cause the video to require numerous recordings and forever to finalize)!
      The down-side to my strategy though is that it tends to push the length of my videos out beyond what many people are willing to sit through. For example, the Arcane Guide I just recently posted was the 6th version that I recorded, and every single one of those 6 recordings was within (+ or -) 4 minutes of the final posted video - an issue I'm hoping to smooth out in the future.
      Anyways, now that I went off on a tangent, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it to be helpful!

    yeah this is great thanks at first i was pressing all the buttons that light up and i did not think thermal void would be better but with thermal void i dont have to worry about slower cast times with frost bolt as much. and the ebonbolt shatter is great however you need to to far away which in raids is annoying cause of tanks running away boosted my dps by 10k

      Thank you! I'm glad you're finding my Mage guides to be helpful! And yes, *spoiler alert*... Fire is coming. Gonna be dropping that guide like it's HOT real soon ;) haha
      The Fire guide is just taking me a bit longer than Frost and Arcane because I don't have the Fire legendaries that the spec more/less functions around (at a top level) in order to test everything that I'd like to - which is frustrating.

      I know what you mean. Legendaries are a very big annoyance especially for alts.

      Btw, Frost seems to be my favorite specc too. =)

  • @Scarage21
    @Scarage21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some critic: opener is always ebonbold... some guys in the discord simed the different openers and plain eb>flurry>il>orb was siming the highest. Also micromanaging chain reaction usually leads to a dps loss. Always prioritize brain freeze over fingers. So if you have both procs and are already casting fb just shatter flurry and munch the fof proc. For that reason splitting ice (the talent) is actually scaling way better. Even on single target you get more dps from the extra 5% il dmg. And bc u usually munch some fof with brain freeze, getting more fof loses out with higher ilvl and set bonuses.

    • @AswollAlpaca
      @AswollAlpaca 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not necessarily true. The ebonbolt opener is a pretty basic opener that gives you immediate burst. Building chain reaction before going into eb-flurry-il-orb will give you more consistent damage. You can also argue that getting chain reaction rolling then using frozen orb first then into ebonbolt combo would be a dps increase. The reason being is frozen orb is on cd much faster (assuming you have at least 2 set t20).
      Also you should avoid munching a fof proc at mostly any cost, some top raiders, for example rikh will cancel a frostbolt cast if he gets an icelance even when he has bf proc. Having your bracer buff continually going will always be consistent damage. while maybe you get another bf proc, which won't be much difference since you will being using the bf regardless, you are guaranteed to not munch a FoF proc.
      And gaming chain reaction is a damage increase if you properly know how to do it, same thing applied to incanter's flow. It's a little more complicated to pull off and you need to know when or not to do it.

      Haha This is the first I’ve been told that I sound like Bob Ross, but I’ll take it. ;p
      I’m glad you were able to learn a lot from this guide! Also, I’m happy to say that this guide is still up to date, so everything here is accurate carrying forward through The Burning Throne and into patch 7.3.5! There are some tiny nuances that affect Frost due to higher gear item levels and set bonuses, but this guide was never meant to cover those sorts of things but instead focus on the basics. And the basics of Frost still are the same. :)
      Thanks again, and good luck!

    It's 100% better to always have Splitting Ice because:
    1. Ice Touch is a random and no matter 40% you still can experience long periods without procs.
    2. Splitting Ice is a permanent Ice Lance damage bonus and what's more important you will never forget to switch talents because without Splitting Ice you lose a lot more when it's needed.
    You are right about stats but I would list it like that: crit up to 33% > haste up to ~26% > vers (near 26% haste vers is equal, with more haste, vers starts to gain more weight) > mastery > crit after 33%.
    Relics.
    Item lvl is a priority only if it offers you +4-6 ilvl then you can ignore the trait it provides. But after that you should take into account the following: Claritr > Let it Go > +3 ilvl > Obsidian > Ice Age > Veins > +2 ilvl > Caress > +1 ilvl > Orbital...
    It's before netherlight crucible traits though.
    Moving forward.
    You NEVER.. i repeat. NEVER wait for the flow or chain reaction holding procs for "better future". 100% you will munch procs doing that thing. If you don't fail hard with rotation you will have chain reaction ~70-80% by default. To have it flurry (with BF) combo most of the time. Incarnation's flow is the same.
    Opener.
    The only situation you start with FB is when you play with GS build (which is probably weak atm, playable but weak). Your buffed with orb ebonbolt doesn't outweight overlapping procs. Just to make it clear, my critical ebonbolt deals 2.03m damage without the orb, with it damage is 3m. ~1m difference. But. You will have high chances to munch FoF procs and you will 100% overlap FoF lances with Winter's Chill. Every lance is 1-1.2m damage. Imagine if you lose 3-4 such lances during opener (including munching FoF and overlapping it with Winter's Chill). That's why you do opener like this: pre pot > pre cast ebonbolt > flurry > veins > lances... Also worth mentioning is how to deal with the situation when BF and FoF proc at the same time. It's still pretty controvesial what has more priority - cast fb + lance or fb+flurry. In both cases you have chance to munch procs but BF is kinda more important to NOT munch especially with the fact that critical fb reduces veins' CD. So, it's better to fb>flurry most of the time especially if you have 1-2 FoF. There is 1 exception though: if you cast fb with already bf up then consume BF and follow with lances plus another bf procs then you can do flurry - lances without casting FB IF you need to perform some movement. Or you can first consume FoF with lances and then do fb > flurry (BF) combo and in this case you won't overlap anythihng. And once again - Do not keep your procs for better flow and chain reaction. Munching it is way worse than casting it at 5 stacks and 3 stacks of the flow and chain respectively.
    Peace.

    • @Zaes223
      @Zaes223 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree munching procs is such a decrease in damage versus waiting for incanters and flow.

I know there are a lot of pay-2-win kids playing now w/twinked out gear and heirlooms but anyone have tips for lower-level mages on what kind of DPS they should expect? I am trying my hardest on burn-down single targets to get past 10k using blizzard frostbolt, frost lance and and procs when they happen but everyone else is usually 15k-25k!?! Please halp!

    they cant really call any other class "boring" i have played them all and theyre all easy to play mechanically once you get used to it and all classes have their own small things you can do to get a bit more out of it and most comes from how you react in situations during raids. currently im enjoying frost as an alt, im finding it more fun to play than fire or arcane.

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I didn't even play then (I was a Panda-Land baby), but I absolutely love the WotLK music so I use it every chance I get (especially the Howling Fjord/Grizzly Hills music).
      Also, I strongly encourage you (and anyone else) to give Mages the old college try. Personally, I have been so satisfied with my choice to main a Mage throughout Legion. All three mage specs are fun, have different play-styles, and have their own strengths and weaknesses. If your mage's main spec starts to get boring or stale, just swap to one or both of the other two for a bit. I actually just did exactly that (literally last week), where I was getting bored of Frost (from overuse) and simply losing interest in the class. So, I put solid effort into relearning, testing, and practicing both Arcane and Fire. As a result, I fell in love with my mage all over again - which is ultimately what led to the Arcane Guide going up last Friday and (spoiler alert) a Fire Guide on the horizon. ;)
      Anyways, glad you enjoyed the music and especially glad you enjoyed the video! :)

    i don't understand what i'm doing wrong but i'm sitting at 935 with 33 crit, 30 haste, 12 vers, 48 mast. but i can't sustain dps above 850k, i open really hard, at around 1.8m, 2m if i'm lucky then drop like a rock after 30 or so seconds. I don't have the bracers nor the trinket but i don't think my dps should be this low or am i wrong??

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's difficult to say what DPS you should or should not be pulling without combing through your combat logs, but my guess is that 850k DPS is definitely lower than what your character is capable of at your gear level & stats. That being said, if there's something your missing, it's probably something very simple and easy to fix.
      My best advice, as shameless as it may seem, is simply to watch this video from the beginning, paying attention to the details, and treating the information as if you were learning Frost for the first time (so you don't ignore and skip over things that you might "think" you already know). Doing so may, at the very least, refresh what you know about the basics but it also could solve whatever issue you're encountering. In my experience of helping people's DPS in WoW, it's often the basics that players are less familiar with so that's what I try to tailor these videos to focus on.
      I'm sorry that I couldn't provide more specific help or help to pinpoint whatever is causing this issue for you. But, if nothing else, I hope that the video can help correct anything you might be doing wrong. If not, just walk up to a training dummy and practice practice practice - increasing your muscle memory, improving the effectiveness of your reactions to various combinations of procs, reducing the number of procs that you "waste", and managing your cooldowns. Good luck!

    *Glacial spike* needs more attention. It's a lot more fun than the boring Icy veins and can pump out more damage. I don't consider it a lesser talent. Missed oppertunity here.

    Whats your opinion on raiding with Gspike? I've been playing around with it because all the upper ilevel gear have been giving me master (I have 80%)

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, 80% is definitely a lot of mastery. My first suggestion would be to sim yourself. If you've never simmed before, I highly suggest using raidbots.com. To do so: talent into glacial spike build, go to "raidbots.com", select the "Top Gear" option, use the simulationcraft addon in-game to copy/paste your character's info into the textbox on the website, and start simming various combinations of gear. Record the best simdps that you get with Glacial Spike (and the gear you got it with - I usually take a picture with my phone), and then repeat the same process using Thermal Void. Once it's all done, compare your results between Glacial Spike and Thermal Void and you'll know which is better for you and your gear.
      As far as play-style goes, Glacial Spike complicates the rotation a bit - giving it more room for human error. Additionally, it is (usually) much more inconsistent with it's output (higher dps variance) when compared to Thermal Void. So, with that in mind, I personally would still recommend running Thermal Void unless the % difference between your Glacial Spike build is substantially higher than your Thermal Void build. However, keep in mind that if you prefer the play-style of Glacial Spike then, by all means, use Glacial Spike! Because this is a game that's played for fun, after all. :)

      yeah, its crazy. I was trying to keep my 33% crit while gear up from ilevel 890, but now I'm 923 and ALL the gear I have is mastery, but the intellect of the pieces was too good to pass up, but I'll defiantly try and sim my character to see what goes down, thanks!

  • @michaeladamson1729
    @michaeladamson1729 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ironstar, you mentioned ray of frost isn't necessarily viable because you can't often stand still for 10sec, however you can shimmer during the cast to "move". Is there a reason you didn't discuss this?

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if you could cast and channel Ray of Frost while moving for 100% of its duration, it'll still be inferior to Lonely Winter (and even Bone Chilling). Also, I've found that many mage players (especially newer players) aren't good at the whole "cast > shimmer > re-position > and finish the cast" thing, so I left it out of this guide. This way, people are less likely to spend too much time trying to figure out shimmer-casting when they could be focusing on nailing things like the Frostbolt > Flurry > Ice Lance combo and/or how to minimize wasted procs.
      I create these videos specifically with newer players in mind and it can be very easy to overwhelm someone who's jumping in to a new game or spec. So, I try to only go into detail about the basics, allowing the viewers to focus on what's important when learning a new spec and not getting hung up on bits of information that are potentially less important. That's why I generally try to stay away from mechanics like that in my videos: so that my viewers can focus on the basics to playing the spec.
      I hope that this helped to clear things up! And good question, by the way!

    So I just started playing this game and as I've never managed to like a MMO and my friends convinced me to play this game, can anyone suggest a STRONG OP CLASS for me to start? I got it down to ranged, but wich one i do'nt care. I just wanna make sure once I start playing the raids (or dungeons, idk) I won't feel like a useless shit compared to the rest of the pt and give up on the game.

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ** I started responding to this and, somehow, my response grew and grew into a short essay... so bear with me. :)
      Hello! First off, welcome to World of Warcraft! As someone who's played the game for quite a while now, my advice to anyone who's choosing a class or spec to play as their main character, is simply to choose something that you find fun to play and a cool/appealing in fantasy - disregarding the community's current perception of how "OP" it is. It is important to know that each spec will have it's own strengths and weaknesses. For example, the spec you choose could boast having incredibly strong sustained-single-target damage but also be very weak (relative to other specs) in situations like multi-target-burst damage. It is also important to understand that, as a new player, some specs are more difficult to play than others, so if you aren't ready to handle that more difficult spec, you will be doing way less damage with it than you would with an easier spec (no matter how "OP" the more challenging spec is). And that's perfectly OK! Each spec is close enough in performance that if you are really good at a "weaker" spec, you will be better off playing that spec (in most cases) than you would playing the flavor-of-the-month "OP" spec that you're terrible at. To clarify, everyone has the ability to play any spec in the game at a respectable level (if they choose to do so) but for new players, there is A LOT to learn just about the game itself and trying to play a complicated spec on top of all of that could be overwhelming. That's why I generally recommend "easier" specs to new players.
      That being said, I was a new player once too. During that time, I changed from playing a Balance Druid to a playing a Survival Hunter (survival was ranged back then) because I thought hunters were OP, that my druid was trash, and because I wanted to look more "elite" on the damage meters. Later on, as I became much better at the game, I realized that they both were very strong dps specs and that it was just me being a terrible Balance Druid that led me to think the spec was bad. That's why I said earlier that you're better off playing something you can more easily handle (you'll perform better as a player, making your character perform much better). Fun fact though: once I was a better player, I went back to play my Balance Druid as an alt and I fell in love with it. To this day, that particular version of Balance Druid (during Mists of Pandaria's Siege of Orgrimmar raid tier - Tier 16) was my all time favorite spec ever in World of Warcraft - and I started out hating it because I wasn't good at it.
      Keeping all that in mind and going back to your original question, if you really just want someone to recommend a spec for you to play, my suggestions would be Frost mage (guide seen above), Affliction* or Destruction Warlock, and Beast Mastery Hunter. Each of those specs offer a straight forward style of gameplay that is easy to pick up and understand, can perform relatively well with just a minimal understanding (pressing the buttons that light up), and also offer more advanced techniques/nuances for you to work towards mastering once you're much more comfortable with the spec. Warlocks and Beast Master hunters are also "pet classes" that use pets not only to deal damage but also to tank their enemies (hold threat) by taunting the target to attack it instead of you. Pet classes are always a good choice for new players who are spending most of their time out in the open-world leveling and completing quests.
      *A potential outlier among the specs I've listed is the Affliction Warlock. It can be slightly less straightforward to simply pick up and play due to its basic mechanics, it is relatively weak while leveling (very slow to level), and then at max level it's damage is very gear dependent and requires the use of extra addons to play at high level. But, it has the potential to be the "OP" spec that you're looking for, so I listed it.
      Hopefully, after reading this essay I just wrote (Idk how this ended up being so long), you have a better idea of what spec you might want to play. In general, I think if you choose a spec because you really want to play it (not because you've seen it doing a lot of damage), you'll do just fine! Just try to consider what looks to be the most cool & fun to you - the damage/performance will come naturally over time as you get better! But, no matter what spec you choose, don't get discouraged WHEN you make mistakes because you're going to make them! I've logged more hours/days/years into this game than I care to admit to and I still am making mistakes, learning new things, and challenging myself in different ways all the time in WoW. That's part of what makes World of Warcraft so great.
      Good luck!

      Perfect reply.
      I would definitely go with BM Hunter if you just want to get stuck in and see big numbers right from the off.
      I would also add that you can now jump straight in down another avenue; DK's.
      Death Knights are ridiculously OP at their lower levels (they start at lvl55 instead of lvl1), Blood especially, and tanking is so much fun. And you really need to follow that advice; do what you find fun. It's not worth the effort if you're not enjoying yourself.

    You say not to use blizzard single target but I have Zann’esus so my damage can stack up to 135% on blizzard so wouldn’t I still want to use it even though I lose cast time.

    • @IronStarGaming
      @IronStarGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're using the Frost belt, then you'll be taking talent Arctic Gale talent and, yes, Blizzard will be part of your single target rotation. However, you'll only be casting Blizzard (on a single target) when you've reached 5 stacks from the belt. Hope this helps!

      IronStar Gaming it confirms my rotation! I was just wondering I pretty much knew the gist of being frost but I didn’t know flurry could also shatter ebonbolt frost bolt and glacial spike. Has really helped up my damage. Tired of getting beat out by damn wind walkers 😂😂
