    One situational benefit to long range weapons is if it's a projectile weapon, your shots travel faster. Which can alleviate Force Shell's shot speed nerf.

    To make targeting easier just target a subsystem (how 'bout that tasty power plant with a focused weapon ;) ) and you'll get a nice target reticule.

    Umm, no. The gimbaled G5 long range thermal vented beam lasers on my Corvette mean that my opponents don't have any shields by the time I'm in range for for my MCs to start eating their hull, and because their thermal vented I pretty much never turn them off. They also mean that when someone tries to run with less than 10% hull they aren't going to get away.

    Yesterday, i outfitted my Krait MK2 with all gimballed burst lasers (got tired of refilling ammo and wanted to try it out). "Focused" engineering on the 3 large ones (which gives higher "armor piercing" rating than the rail gun), and "long range" on the 2 medium ones. "Scramble spectrum" as experimental on all of them. The medium ones did not do that much damage, so today i decided to change them out with 2 medium sized railguns (with "short range" and "plasma slug"). Very happy with this build :P

      If you're going to use scramble spectrum only put it on one laser. Putting it on more than one does not provide any benefit as the effects do not stack. This is the same case with corrosive shell on multi-cannons and frag cannons. For rails it's better to put feedback cascade on one and super penetrator on the other since you can just synthesize more railgun ammo.

    target a module in the center of the ship like the power plant and use night vision. the targeted module will give you a pin point box around it making it easier to aim at your target in general.

    Long range beams are amazing, if you can support their power requirements. You only need grade 1 LR at any level, because your after the falloff making your beams lethal at any range, ontop of the perk of being able to mazer down enemies even if they try to flee.

    Good vid but I have to disagree with your opening comments re long range weapons being ineffective due to gimbal jitter. I also found this view to be prevalent on the forums.
    This vid was made a while back so perhaps things have changed but my recent experiments with Long Range Gimballed Lasers have been very promising and definitely viable especially for the slower ships in the game that are vulnerable to NPC kiting tactics.
    Please see my Long Range Gunship vid for proof.
    Anyway still a great vid this is one of my fav ED channels keep up the good work CMDR.

    Pro tip, target a module of small ships at a distance so you can use the targeting area to know exactly where the ship is.
    Also I tried throwing focus fire on a turreted pulse laser on my Anaconda (small one with emissive) it's surprisingly accurate at range, awful damage but good enough to draw ships to me instead of flying to them.

      The problem with selecting a subsystem with fixed is that your weapons divergence will only lock onto that subsytem. Unselecting a subsystem allows divergence to lock onto the nearest subsystem, usually allowing you to get all weapons onto target a bit easier. But it is something I will try next time

      Targeting the powerplant(which is usually near the middle of the ship) at those distances you fought at would certainly only have benefited your hitrate. But in normal fighting range, your point stands strong.

    Try selecting a subsystem. The small target icon helps you see ships from distance or low vision situation.

    I found it helpful to always target a subsystem when firing fixed weapons. The small red square helps a lot when aiming even if you're just targeting the hatch.

      True, I should have done this on the really longer range stuff.. Reason why I didnt was that I have found each weapon will more easily lock onto a random subsystem if you dont select a specific subsystem, and it makes it easier to get all weapons on target, but your possibly right, if I had done it at much longer ranges, it might have helped. I might test it a bit later. Cheers

    I think you've overlooked the most important aspect (in my opinion) of long range weapons: no falloff.
    I play PVE, so penetration to target subsystems is pointless now that you can't gib an NPC with a subsystem destruction. By using long range and eliminating falloff, my weapons are much more effective between 500 and 1500 meters, so when range opens up I'm far more effective. Not being the best pilot, I find most of my combat is around 1000 meters or so.
    This also negates the "don't use long range on gimbled" aspect, because the point is - still stay close, but you're more effective past point blank range.

      I have 2 gimballed grade 5 long range beams on my python and they hit eagles about 75% at 5km distance.
      Yes it takes sometime but its funny to 'snipe' enemy's whilst they can't even get a single shot on me :D

    Use sub-targeting of modules at long ranges to get your fixed weapons to have a mini "Gimballed" effect as the reticule sticks to the box.

      They have this effect anyway. They adjust to be on target when slightly off, re-watch the video, you can see them doing so.

      works the same with all weapons, and they always have the microgimbal effect. Targeting a specific subsystem can slightly reduce it, because they no longer microgimbal to the nearest subsystem, they only attempt to do it to the targeted one.

    i was always curious about these mods... thanks for that video. i kinda wish focused would reduce the gimbal/turret sway as well, as i could see focused turrets at least somewhat effective in bigger ships as support weapons handled by your crewmen. i mean, if that will be a thing xD

    I took Long range weapons to the next level. Flying an Anaconda. You are huge, big and easy to hit. I stacked resistance boosters, hull and bi weave shields. I went full turret Pulse top & bottom with huge long range gim beam weapon with heat vent mod. Pulse range 5.2k+ Heavy beam 3.5km. The turrents had no problem hitting targets @ over 5kms. usually the npc would come straight at me in a line and of course they would be dead or getting into my beam range and dead x2.

      side effect I discovered. None of the NPC had long range weapon mods, go figure? So when I engaged, it was 4km to 3.5kms. Shields hardly got a work out. Change my play style. I either tended to park and pretend Im a battle ship or hit reserve and just pick away. Made solo massacre missions easy. So @ anyone time, I had up to 8 weapons firing constantly, from 5kms, no heat issues, doing full damage. I think its a little hidden op.

      Adventures Of A Koala Farmer I think of the Anaconda as a destroyer a naval vessel I believe it's ridiculous to have it in close-quarter combat it should have long-range weapons and a strong hole and be protected by other members in the group

    Great vid! Like you have commented below the Time To Kill was very long, but you suffered no hull damage. It looked a lot more juggling distance and seemed "boring" from the position of an onlooker, the close up dogfight would give me more satisfaction. I was surprised you didnt reverski into a clump of opposition in that Combat Zone and get shredded.

      It was weird, I kinda didnt mind this kind of combat, it was a refreshing change and a lot more precise than usual combat. Watching it as an outsider I can understand why it seems boring, but it is actually quite a bit of a challenge, just in a very different kind of way. Personally, I prefer in close dogfighting, but it was refreshing to change it up a little. The combat zone was strange, there is a LOT of footage that I didnt include, but there were times when I would wander into a spawn location and get myself into trouble.. but a few quick boosts, and a 180 flip managed to negate the problem.

    Wish you could either engineer a Tracking computer or buy specialized ones that give you a better HUD for where to shoot and track long range targets. I understand the fixed nature of the weapons.. But we aren't playing CS:GO here trying to hit a headshot across the map. We are playing a Game in the year 3303 that would hopefully have intuitive tracking displays that match even Current Fighter helmets, tracking data and displays on f-35's and SU-35s's.
    Even having the ability to zoom in with a hotkey controlled display Similar to a Sniper style gameplay for a FPS would make this gameplay style relevant.

    What am I missing? How can you reverse through an asteroid belt without hitting any? Lol. Are you just trusting luck and shields or is there a way to actually avoid them?

    From patch note: "Link Gimbal weapon tracking to the sensitivity of ship sensors. Does not affect CQC/Fighters/Non-main-ships" I about to invest heavily on my conda with 2L + 2M gimballed G5 long range pulse laser with A-Grade Sensor. I really hopes that'll work ^^ since I love piloting the fighter my crew piloting the conda can be a long range support sniper :p

    Got to be careful though.. You get to far away when the target pops and you don't get credit for the kill even if you did 99% damage to him. I think the tag reset is between 7 and 10k. Maybe the quality of your sensors affects this as well.

    When flying in reverse do you have to have FA off or can you fly FA on with engines in reverse? Can you FA off, flip 180, reverse engines full throttle, then FA back on? Or can reverse FA on only reach a certain speed? The reason for asking is I'm new to FA off. I've tried to fight a Cyclops FA off in reverse to flack the swarm but i couldn't keep it steady. It did not end well for me. Lol

      I would recommend messing around near and inside of a station turning fa on and off to understand how it works. Experience is the best teacher!

      All of the above. Reverse in FA on max speed depends on the ship. For many, you are limited to 50-75% reverse speed, but sidewinders can hit the same speed forwards and back. If you are comfortable aiming FA Off, you can do a boost, flip and just drift while you aim with a zero throttle. Even in FA off, your speed will naturally reduce from boost speed to standard full throttle max speed, but it should be your forward speed instead of typical reverse speed.
      Edit: In this case, you can see he is FA on and full throttle reverse by watching the line on the throttle. If that horizontal line goes across the speedometer, its FA on. That bar disappears and you use the little bars on the left to judge your thruster power in FA off

    Best use for long range and focused weapons are on the PA. Couple those with some thermal vented efficient beams and its the perfect combo. Over and out.

    After seeing this vid and thinking about a FDL or Courier loadout I think that focused + phase sequence should be a nice combo , shouldn't it ? In this kind of ships I should stay close enough to benefit from focus rather than LR . However my cutter beam turrets will get LR . Thanks for this vid.

    have you checked out efficient weapons by chance?
    I've run rapid, oc, and efficient on my Vulture. and I gotta say even at efficient 3, I've seen a nice improvement overall with my burst lasers.
    they're a bit slower.
    but pip management is more forgiving, and I can have pips in engines or sys longer.
    same with overall power output too.
    it's a nice mod for sustainability

    So far I really dig having a long range huge beam laser (fixed) on my anaconda. Having long range means I have no damage falloff until about 4.6 km, which is fantastic when the weapon normally has a falloff starting at 600 m. All of the dps is, thus, preserved when fighting at 2+ km range along with multicannons, and punishing foes who try to run. :) My only regret is putting regeneration beam effect on it, which I now know decreases damage by 10%. At least I have the ability to quickly heal my fighter when it gets focused!

      Maybe you could get away with this on a corvette, but due to its low reverse speed, enemy ships would be able to close the distance very fast, so maybe this wouldnt work so well. As for Kornelius, I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago. Hes fine, but he is giving Elite Dangerous a break for a while.

    did they change long range? Didn't it just increase the distance where damage falloff start from 500m to 1000m?

      Long range makes falloff and max range the same, which functionally means 0 falloff.

    I have yet to engineer any of my laser weapons. Didn't even know they had long range modifications. Nice to know, heh. Working on unlocking Qwent at the moment.

      The best way to get revenge is either taking them on in a combat ship, or engineering an eagle for max speed and an interdictor.. Interdict them in supercruise, and then just boost away.. keep doing it over and over, and they will get REALLY angry.

      If you want to be left alone, then best thing to do is play solo, or join Mobius, a private group where commanders are strictly PVE only

      No, missiles only have Sturdy Mount, High Capacity Magazine, Lightweight Mount and Rapid Fire

    Seems like too much work for little reward. You surely would've killed them faster from being able to land more shots closer in. Still, good to conduct the experiment for our benefit. Personally, I would've preferred one of these mods to be designed to work with turreted or gimballed weapons. Y'know, like increasing the range, but severely axing or eliminating the wobble while also hampering damage as a trade-off.

      Indeed.. its why I said they are not really practical. But it is something I have always wanted to test, and I am actually glad I took the time to do it. Its really helped my fixed weapons training as I then went in my FDL with fixed rapid fire pulses and completely wrecked anything I came across just as fast, if not faster than with gimbals.

      It certainly was interesting to try out. I definitely don't think I could handle them, though. I play E:D on Xbox, and when I play it on my laptop I use a controller as well. As sensitive and precise as the control sticks have the potential to be, it would still be a hassle to aim at those ranges. Even I'll admit that for something like that you'd need a mouse or proper joystick.
