    Frontier still has to learn that most of the community can help them design/refine game features, but unfortunately, they persist in keeping things secret with the inevitable consequences. Yes, there are trolls who will always mock regardless of what happens, but Frontier really need to learn to consult the community. This review by DEA is a very good example of how constructive comment would be beneficial.

      That would presuppose that Frontier Developments was an organisation not at all given to ego. As we have seen in the past, all to many times, this is not the case.

    I would have liked to have a controller that is blank and you buy modules that can slot into the blank controller eg you buy a size 3 controller and can fit two collector and a prospector limpet modules, or a repair , refueller & colloector limpet modules. Just like you can with the srv bay or fight hangers.

    Limpits should only need one type of controller. The idea that the limpits themselves are universal, but the controller must be different, is absurd. Instead of balancing the universal or multi-roll controllers, eliminate everything except a single, universal controller.

      I've thought the same thing.
      I would even be okay with;
      1 limpet controller, available in different sizes/grades.
      And multiple types of limpets to stock up.

      im more a fan of multiple types of limpets who all talk to the same controller, you have one type of moduel and have to take the limpets you need for the operation you want to do - simple enough more than enough room to fuck up and just boil it down to cheap, medium and premium limpets - easy enough to make i guess but on the other side i have no idea how to make a game

    Another case where Frontier don't even understand their own game. I don't know what kind of staff changes have been going on there in the past few years but the current team truly comes across as completely incompetent of doing anything well.

      Most of us know they have abandoned ED...just riding out any goodwill they have left. Seems they more focused on dinosaurs and rollercoasters. Does not help that Lord braben lacks leadership and skill.

      @@juan-pierreleroux8323 Braben has skill, but whether he has a hand in developing elite, or any interest in nurturing elite or is simply milking it and us for all he can grab off of us, I genuinely wonder. The strange thing is there is huge money to be had out of a premium space sim, if you look at star citizen's revenue in pre-order and ship sales alone, it's nine figures. Elite could have the same sort of revenues. The shady practices are now biting DJB in theballs though, as he still owns ~1/3rd of FDev, and after the financial reports this quarter showing piss poor reception of Odyssey and a similarly bad response to JWE2, the company's shares dropped 40%, wiping ~£120m off Braben's net worth. The directors are cashing out of FDev, as of November they have sold 46,574 more shares than they’ve bought.

      Well, there are people on the project that were there from just after kickstarter finished. The guy who designed how the new Scorpion SRV behaves is one of them. But as D2EA say, there is no real point in using class 3 mutli-controllers for mining, since there is no A variant. Well, in a small or medium ship, they can be usefull as collectors though.

      @@juan-pierreleroux8323 Most of you have never played ED. What THEY do is not what YOU do. They don't PvP. YOU do. They don't want an explorer that has a universal controller or they are not that worried about RANGE. Especially when fleet carriers can do a single 500ly jump. RANGE is not an issue for explorers.

It’s still way waaayyy faster to use an anaconda and the neutron highway. You don’t have to wait 15 minutes to jump and 5 to cool down on a conda, lol.

    It's like they had no idea whatsoever why we've been asking for multi-limpet controllers all these years. They designed them all wrong. It's baffling.

      I imagine they know exactly why. I imagine they deliberately implemented multi-controllers this way: They get to say "we gave you the multi-controllers" but they're so stupid to use that players end up essentially forced to continue playing the game the old way - Frontier's way.

    It's so clear that they design this game with tables,charts and numbers, and no one that is actually playing the game on a regular basis is testing it afterwards. I've been playing for a year and have had some of the best gaming experiences ever (trip to Colonia onboard D2EA Northstar ftw), but the future doesn't seem bright for the Elite

      They really could have quick beta tests with some select players on these new additions, and it would improve them so much. I honestly can't understand why they don't do that. I would test this stuff for free, if it meant a good release with a well thought out product, and I bet most long-time players would too.

      the future is dead for Elite. They are putting out crap no one ever wanted, farming it for what they can get left out of it. The mass majority of the player base that actually truly cared about the game has already left. It is only a matter of time before it enters life support mode.

    Midway thru a mining session the prospector simply stopped working for me. That was it, enough time had already been lost to the reduced yield. Took the multi-controller off & went back to the original setup. Too bad such a good idea was so poorly designed.

      even back in the day CMs would stream themselves playing and when they brought up the right panel they'd have NO ranks, it was clear they didn't play the game. even without seeing the noob level ranks they played like a monkey fucking a football. it was obvious they had no idea what they were doing. and this was back when Frontier somewhat cared about the game, now they don't give a rats arse about it.

    I was so excited when I heard about the new Multi-Limpet controllers conking out, but after play testing them, they are just a big disappointment. This, along with all the issues that Odyssey has, plus the console players basically being abandoned, it all just shows the ‘quality’ that is going into this game these days.

    Sometimes I think I want to play Elite to see what's changed. I have 2500+ hours in. I want to put 2500 more in, but I can't even be bothered because honestly, what's the point? My actions dont' have value, and the only value frontier sees is whatever I can help them please investors with. They don't care about you, and they don't care about elite.

    The only one I found useful is 3C Operations Multi-Limpet Controller. Recon, collector and hatch breaker limpets in a single module, great for a salvage ship, I use it for HGE farming and Megaship Scanning.

      Most of the NEED for multi-controllers are fuel rats et al. NOT "explorers" that NEED that 10ly extra range from engineering.

      @@markhackett2302 you hit it dead on. I run a "rat ship" and i use the rescue controller solely because it lets me run both repair AND refuel off the same controller.

      Not that I am a fuel rat, I've just been a programmer long enough to have invested myself in "other people exist" because that is nearly 100% of a programmers job: working for the "needs" of custards, IOW other people.

    I replaced 7A collector by 7A universal in collecting mode in my miner T9 and that freed 1 slot of 3A collector too. Also put 7A universal in corvette instead 7A repair + 3A collector. No other uses found yet :D

    Nice video. The only one i have found useful as of now is the Xeno multi limpet controller. Normally i would use a repair and a decontamination controller. This just lets me save one slot.

      @@browski7655 Yeah, found that a few that's after using it. But since I normally fight interceptors in wing, we go repair on a carrier on at a time keeping the instance alive. 🙂

      i dont realy see the point of the AX controllers. Just burn off caustic with heat. One gauss/plasma/frag salvo in silent running does the trick and is way faster than any decon limpet.

    A universal controller with task-specific limpets (that players could synthesize with different material recipes) would be much better.
    Then I could stock the limpets I need (prospector, collector, etc.) in my cargo bay, and leave the computer in my build alone. That makes more sense.
    And you could make synthesis create only C-level limpets or lower, while stations sell A-level limpets. That way players would have incentive to buy the right limpets before they take off, leaving limpet synthesis for when you’re stuck and just need any limpet or two.

    Spot on analysis, thank you! I love your detailed look at things like this. Multi-limpet controllers are bad. I took a couple of minutes to look at them when they came out and went "Oh no way in...". They are basically click bait for new folks unfortunately - "multi" means better right? Except that is not true. The outfitting screen is so horrendous it further hides this. Again, thank you! This is a great PSA for any new folks!

      FDEV did say they are early game for those players who don't have multiple specialised ships. And yes I agree that the in game information is awful.

    The mining limpets are very good for combat looting materials (conflict zones or bounty hunting and for high grade emissions)

    This is what you get if you let developers with their implicit knowledge design this stuff. Frontier needs good UX-designers that help them to avoid these kind of issues. If they have UX-designers right now, fire them all and hire a couple of good ones.

      Believe me, you are usually better off with only developers than UX designers. The devs have to actually play and test these things over and over. Most of these weird behaviors come from UX designers who know squat about how things actually work. It's exactly the same in web development. Devs have to fight for things to make sense but get shot down because it's just their job to build it to spec, not make things work in a sane way.

    Nice to see a 'Down in the Dirty' style review vid. I have a couple of observations. One final method to 'purge' all your limpets (and nearby friend's too) is an ECM burst. Also, deploying all 8 as collectors is your choice. You need to manage your collector swarm to one-shy, so a prospector can be cycled. Put a size 5 collector on a different firegroup; or control, if you want 10 limpets at once. Forcing us to be hyper-aware of how all these things come together, as players, seems to be the goal for Frontier, as they seem to think micro-management is a key element to becoming 'elite'. 07, Cmdrs!

      The problem with that is you can reset/cycle prospectors by turning off the respective controller, if you turn off the universal controller you lose the entire swarm.

    Maybe if they were sub-units within the unit, like the SRV bays for example. You get the larger SRV Hangar and within that there are a number of bays for multiple SRVs. So, you can have a Universal Limpet controller "hangar", then within that are different bays, each individually controlled by fire groups. That way, you can have a set number allowed out for each bay.
    Collectors can have the most count, prospectors once deployed can still be only a count of 1 at any time, expire as soon as a new one is launched. If you have all of your collectors out, just switch fire group and launch your others, simple. Grade A gets you the max for that bay etc etc...

    From my testing, it seems the 7a multicontroller actually has the same limpet stats of the 5a specialized controllers. IE, Multi-7a repair is the same as a 5a normal repair. So far my testing with the others seem to confirm that but I might be missing something.

      This is good to know. Pretty sure the size 3 controllers are the same though, their drawback is the stupidly high tonnage. More tonnage than you can fit with cargo modules.

      For explorers, a single 3C multi-controller does Repair, Decontamination and Research... should be enough. The total weight for that is 10t. That lowers my jumprange from 64.76LYs to 63.31LYs. In my Krait Phantom exploration ship, I do not have any room to fit more than one controller, unless I go sheildless. So.. for one year LY penalty I can now have 3 different controlers in one spot.

    To be fair, it is correct that for Laser mining those mining controller are basically only a Class 3 with 2 extra active collectors (which you can only have one equipped at a time sadly), and you still need a dedicated prospector controller, but for Core mining you don't care about the grade of the prospector, you just need it to see there is a core and if you spend over 5 minutes to find your next core then all your limpets are already expired so you can freely shoot a prospector... I am not a core miner and didn't try them for that but on paper they seem more suited for Core than Laser mining...

    Seems to me there has been a duality within FDev for a long time between two hands not knowing what the other is doing. I'm still waiting for all of the inventory graphics to match with what the actual in game models look like. I'm looking at you, missile racks.

    I tried to use a size 7 universal limpet controller on my exploration Anaconda, it will shorten the jump of more than 12 LY, so I am not going to use it.
    now add to this all that D2EA just said, and the million dollar question is:
    How hard it is for Frontier to do the right thing with this game? after month of waiting for the miracle limpet they come out with this?
    this is what happens when the developers dont know their own game.
    if you never spent your time thinking witch limpet controller is better for exploration or mining or any other use...you will know nothing about it.
    why a universal limpet controller must be a size 7? why not a size 3 or 5 that smaller ship can use.
    NO! universal limpet controller come only in size 7, and it must weight like a size 7 prismatic shields.
    It seems to me that Fdev cannot move on from their ED design dogma...the mould must never be broken.
    I think it is time for some firing at Fdev...

    THANKYOU FOR THIS EXPLAINAITION ! - As someone that had a go mining recently and after like 3hrs+ of trawling through overlapping hotspots and barely making 10Mil worth LTDs in my cargo of a CUTTER ffs. I didn't see the fun of it, when I knew I could have made far more money doing trips with Agronomic or Gold I was pretty deflated.
    I was using the Mining Limpet that gave me both Prospector and Collectors in 1 and let me have more room for my guardian drive so I could have long haul trade, had no clue about the A rating prospectors benefits...fml

    What always made me wonder why...out of the normal limpet controllers, the only one really usefull for explorers - the repair limpet controller - can't be engineered, while the others can.
    And making it light-weight would be the way to go for most explorers, right?

      To be fair, the 1D controller is already really light, and afaik you can't use more than one limpet at a time per target anyways.

      @@asmahasmalaria8596 But 1D has very limited repair capacity, when most explorers out there can't use restock service, they have no choice but to synthesis limpets, you need to consider how much more materials a 1D controller will need than a better one. I usually go with a 5D on my Anaconda, it's not too heavy and has a decent repair capacity.

      Or maybe so that it kills one limpet automatically for you if you fire another. Some considerations should be made on deciding which limpet to replace, but that shouldn't be such a big problem.

      Actually you can use ECM to kill all limpets nearby, but that comes with more time to deploy limpets and kill them, make things more complicated, I still don't see a reason to use multi limpet controller in mining.

    Why not just get rid off all the old controllers and just have multis that have different grades each size, then there wouldn't be any balance needed and AFAIK the controller only programms the same limpets anyway, but for some reason the the future we have very limited computers, just like data storage. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    About a millenia ago, I did some technical writing, which is basically a version of what it takes to write stuff like descriptions for modules in Elite. It's like they picked descriptions out of a hat, and used whatever one was closest. Just horrible.

    I can see what they did here. the question was asked "how can we make multi role limpet controllers but not give them extra equipment slots and not invalidate regular limpet controllers?" this had a side effect of just making them useless and they are not even honest about how it works. there are some nice trade offs if the stats were true. but as of now they are useless i feel.

    Well... the premise of this video is that every large ship should have at least 512t cargospace when building a large mining ship. That is not the case for everyone.
    As an example, I usually stick to 256t cargospace, which means that I will spend around 1h i the rings to fill up with Platinum. For that build, I found the Corvette to be a perfect ship. I replaced the 7A Collector with the 7A multi-controller and use it purely as a collector (+4 collectors). I also replaced one of the 5A collectors with a 5A prospector, giving me 4 active prospectors. (-3 collectors) I also replaced the 3A Prospector with a 3A collector (+2 collectors). The rest of the build stayed the same. This gave me a total of 3 extra Collectors and 2 extra Prospectors.
    This means that I have shortened the time I spend in the rings. I havn't clocked it yet though.
    That said, FDev should have added a 3A version for all multi-limpet controllers.

    Got on elite after a few months hiatus. Saw a blank limpet icon (I don’t know if it’s broken for horizons or because I use EDHM), and googled how these work for some help since there wasn’t even any details besides some stats which looked off.
    Well looks like I’m not changing my mining loadout much.

    The other issue is that the size 7 multi controller wastes a size 8 slot on my laser mining cutter. The smaller 5 size limpet collectors I can remove don't give me back anywhere near the same cargo space.

    The multi and universal limpet controllers should have been implemented as genuine low grade (i.e. only size 1 equivalents) types that allow players to dabble in gameplay features to learn the ropes and then decide whether to specialise in that career. E.g. I expected the multi controllers to be a bundle up to 3 of size 1 (and weight, e.g. be a total of 5 or 6t) equivalent controllers and would be fit in a size 3 slot. Same with the Universal one, I expected it to be a bundle of 8 size 1 (and weight e.g. 15-20t) equivalent controllers and should have been available to size 6 slots (so that exploration ships could take them). I thought the whole point was these were to enable players to engage in the widest possible range of gameplay, but there would still be a need for the dedicated modules if a player then decides, this is cool, I want to do X as a career so will outfit a dedicated ship for it.
    As it is they seem to have geared these at entirely the wrong non-existing audience, and managed to alienate everyone. Facepalm.

    I was excited when i heard that finally the multi limpet controllers were going to be added.... But once again FDev proved a new feature untested before release and disappointing.

    What I found out with the mining controller is that a prospector will always be replaced. So as long as one active limpet is a prospector, it will be replaced when firing a new one. So it can be used for mining but being C-rated you get only about half the number of fragments.

      A common setup is to have collector controllers on the same button as your lasers so you can mine chunks and relaunch limpets at the same time. In this case you would replace all your prospector limpets instantly if you didn't have a separate controller for them. So now it's back to a slower but higher limit collector.

    A second post. There's also an issue with the new Scorpion SRVs. Although this has been an issue for some time with the fighter bays, I only ever had one or two at any given time and those didn't get moved off the ships they were installed in. With the second SRV and three size 4 SRV hangers in my collection for various missions, it's hit or miss trying to find one that has two Scarabs, two Scorpions, or one of each. This is even an issue with size 2 hangers. I'd like to see the SRVs and fighters individually selectable when reinstalled into a ship. Right now a carrier can only supply the Scarab and not the Scorpion (unless I missed an upgrade?)

    My experience with the type 7 is 4 prospectors active max or 8 collectors active max. You just need to pay more attention to the number of collectors you have working. I have them set up in my fire control groups separately so I can control how many are out.

    I just saw these controllers the other day. Im hoping in the future they can be engineered. Even for balance purposes if they only cut the weight by half of what other limpet controllers would do that would be a great improvement and then make these more viable.

    A good look into the multi-controllers. Thank you! I've been using the 7A multi with a 5A prospector controller, in addition to a second 5A collector controller in my Corvette mining config. I came to your same results a couple weeks ago, same as you did. I like that the 7A multi controls more limpets and mining isn't constrained by weight (usually). That said, I hope we can engineer those soon. Another limitation is that you can outfit have a single of any type of limpet controller. Why not? That doesn't make sense. With the additional weight and power requirements, isn't that enough of a "buff"? I also agree all controllers should be available when a class A. And why aren't there any size 5's??? I testerd a xeno encounter build the other day and still had to have multiple limpets. Sigh... Maybe a good solution would be to make size 5 multi controllers add collector limpets where there are none? I hope they're still willing to make changes to these almost great modules.

    The ENIAC computer weighed 30 tons and was the size of a small house. Why would a glorified drone remote weight nearly 5x that, in the super far future?
    You'd think that in super far future times, the ability to remote control drones would just be a function of the baseline control scheme of any ship computer. It'd be more believable that a Supercruise and Hyperspace controller module would be an extra addon to leave the starting system and weigh these masses as the number of calculations to navigate at FTL speeds and then alternate dimensions is likely several orders of magnitude greater in number and complexity compared to what amounts to a glorified drone tech.
    Hell, if Amazon is figuring out remote delivery options via drone now, you'd think a 1000 years in the future that all the drones (*limpets sorry) you could possibly fit into the largest of ships could all be remote controlled by voice command on a wrist mounted comlink utilizing advanced pathing algorithms that don't see them splattering themselves against asteroids and megaships.

    Well said, and hopefully Frontier take note and do some tweaks. It's a good idea the multi-limpet controller just seems to have been implemented without too much thought. Just needs a bit of a think of how it is statistically applied into the game. I see the idea, the application does need adjusting.

    Yeah, it would been better if they listed the tasks that are associated with the controllers. Mining being prospector and collector limpets for example. I would bet at some point they will make them able to be engineered. What I do is keep the prospector and collector on a separate fire group from the lasers. I fire one or two as prospectors and the rest as collectors because prospectors when you fire another it automatically terminates one of your existing ones when you fire a new one collector limpets don't work that way.

    If all you want from the size 3 is as a collector, you have 3 choices; standard collector, mining or operations. Latter 2 gives double the limpets, but there's an additional choice; the mining is grade C whereas the operations can be grade B. Which if I understand this right:
    3A collector - 2 x 720 secs at 1320m
    3C mining - 4 x 510 secs at 1100m
    3B operations - 4 x 420 secs at 1540m
    So, which do you go for?

    Well, that was a waste of money then. I thought I was getting those stats with prospector and collector limpets. The one thing you get is the 4 limpets at a time, and saving one smaller slot. But I'm losing one class 7 slot, so idk man. I'm just starting to use it right now for mining.
    Update, it's not anywhere near as bad as I thought. Just had to manage my limpet use to make sure I had prospector limpet available, meaning just using 6 or 7 collectors at a time. Way faster mining. The class 7 slot hurts though.

    It's alright, I don't see why everything coming out as new would have to be the "next OP thing that makes everything else irrelevant", that would actually be worse. It has a narrow use case and more of an alright alternative than a replacement for everything. If this came out and the result would be that you never ever fit a normal controller again it would be more broken than what it is now... Kinda like most weapons are irrelevant, everyone just fits the same ones and ignore the rest... also bad design...

    I remember reading that they were going to increase the stats on the single purpose limpets for balancing. Did they get lazy, limit the new controllers to C rated, keep engineering off them and call it good?

      They never said that as far as I can recall - I think there was speculation from the community that the single controllers would be improved in order to still compete, but FDEV went the other way - kept the singles where they are and made the multi-controller have fewer benefits.. As D2EA himself said - the multis are a good choice if you are space limited and maybe don't have a fleet of specialised ships for different roles: exactly as FDEV themselves said would be the case.
      FDEV live streams clearly stated that they would be mainly for early game players who had a small fleet of multi-role ships, and once you get to mid/late game stages with a large diverse fleet then the individual controllers are the right choice.
      D2EA is normally on the mark - but here the main complaint is that FDEV have done what they said they would.

    the 7a multi is excellent for mining, other than that you're absolutely right, um, i've already been triple elite, and, limpets for exploration?? wtf? i've reset my account and doing it all again, out of boredom waiting for odyssey on consol, lol, not happening, so i've taken up weaponless hazres, good fun, best thing i've done in the game, just go into hazres and ram things to death, good flight training, lol, imperial clipper is excellent for it. i use an ordinary prospector controller, and a 7a multi, and still get 50 more cargo in a t10

    As always, great content Astro, that is for the info. Just what is going on with this game these days? I play on console and have taken a big hiatus since Odyssey as everything seems like such a huge mess, it's really wrecked any enthusiasm to play. In the meantime I keep up how Fdev are... erm... progressing (is that the right word?) With fixing Odyssey and hoping that any time we'll get at least some news of what's happening for us console gamers.
    However...
    What all of us are seeing is new content being added before all platforms are even ready and this content is a huge broken buggy mess?
    C'mon, when we can we have the elite we all love back? Sure loads of us complain but thays because we care, we are part of something absolutely vast and have (I know I have!!) sank crazy amounts ofnglurs into. Sure I hold out that someday soon I'll be back at my shipyard in Jameson and happily walking around, checking out all the new features. Just why though, why are we being told absolutely nothing?!?!
    Such a massive disappointment.

    I really can’t understand their design choices in regards to limpets. There should be one universal controller and you synthesise the limpets you need at the time. That would be perfect for emergent gameplay.
    I could be out in my mining ship and come across the distress signal from a ship needing fuel while on my way back to base. I would need a several different controllers on my ship to handle this simple situation.
    The way they have implemented limpets at the moment seem to add a level of complexity and confusion that really doesn’t help gameplay.

    All of the multi limpet controllers should have a drop down box to choose the configuration per limpet. The configuration for the type and its time and distance allowances. These time and distances allowances use 1x Sulphur for maximum time and distance, if not you'll get the default arrangements.
    There should be an ability to destroy it with self destruct like mines are for mining asteroids. Somethings at Fdev need to change and that's the staff, they obviously punching the clock and taking pay for bad services.

    Was some what interested in testing these out, tried the mining one shot 8 limets and then couldn't get prospector. Flew straight back to station to get rid of this junk. Like why not have 1/1 prospector and 3/3 collector? Or least try mining before making such a draft module lol... can't wait to see the failure of fc interior

    I couldn't understand why the multi prospector limit was dying after less than a minute lifetime. I gave up on them and just mined blind in my type 6. I thought it was great idea as I could have more cargo space and a shield gen..so disappointing..:(

      @@jadonx Yes, launching a collector from the mining controller will destroy the prospector. Good news is you still get the bonus if the prospector hit the asteroid.

      @@Xeridanus Since putting the limpet controllers on different fire group to mining laser it is now ok. You have to be aware that you can only have 1 prospector and 3 collectors out at a time with a 4 multi limpet controller. When you fire a 5th prospector limpet at a new asteroid, the old one dies off. Im happy now I found this out.Ta.

    i wonder, what explorer would take a 128t collector? only a cutter or t9 would need such a size, rather than 2 half size, giving more limpets overall.
    explorer has no need of such limpets, besides a class 1 hull repair limpet for the accident prone cmdrs.

      the benefit i see from just this vid, since i not had time to look into the new stuff,
      Infinite lifetime? well fuck me, that seems far better in the need of limpets in general, rather than a timespan. 5 limpets would do for a few hours of mining just as well as most would use 5 in 20 mins.
      what about prospectors? infinite lifetime is a useless feature.
      what the yield force spawn of materials for prospectors is the most import feature

    Basically.. if you do your job poorly you have to do it twice. It's way more efficient to spend 10% additional time into the thought/planning phase of any project than burst out rushing something. Unfortunately there's a lot of dumb management that can't understand that and here we are, living through this odyssey.......

    This game probably would die out without all the supporting websites. For PC dual monitor (not eyefinity or similar) it is "easy" if you enable borderless....
    For a combat ship a collector+repair what you need. For an explorer a repair and fuel transfer and maybe some research whatever type..

    In short group mining in larger ships is the fast way to make money now in mining - less you dont mind sitting in space mining for 2-3-4 hours. I went back to bounty hunting which is .... well more fun but still doesnt pay what it used too.
