DIY Puller- Remove a Gear or Pulley from Motor Shaft in 15 minutes

  • A quick and easy way to remove a stubborn gear or pulley off of a motor shaft. I sprayed PB Blaster between the gear and shaft first but it wouldn't budge and you have to be careful not to put too much pressure on the bearings if you were to pull both the gear/pulley and the shaft toward you at the same time. To solve this, I used the center bolt to hold the shaft back as the three outside bolts pull the inside piece of plywood toward you. Just a quick solution I decided to get on video as it happened. If this was helpful, consider a thumbs up or subscribing! Thanks for watching.

    Tried the same method on my boat steering helm. It popped like a gun went off, but came out! Thanks for the inspiration.

    very nice, I have an old 1/3 HP craftsman motor with a stuck pulley. Going to give this a try, thanks! (Have to go and buy some longer bolts, though! Or all-thread...)

    hi how did you cut narrow passage that is inserted behind the gear

    • @VintageWoodWorkshop
      @VintageWoodWorkshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a band saw but you could use a variety of hand saws, the best being a coping saw or a jigsaw would work also. let me know how you make out

      @VintageWoodWorkshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      also try drilling a hole just larger than the diameter of the shaft first in the center, then cut two parallel slots to meet the sides of the hole

    Why did turn the three screws instead off the center bolt?
    Wouldnt this have the same result?

      @@dimitrijekrstic7567 And just like you the people disliking this video.
      Didn't realize all the "little hex screw" does is LOCK the pulley from sliding in/out of alignment when in use. It's just like this on lawnmower's, snowblower's or small engine's. The pulley's don't just fall off after that "little hex screw" is loosened
      Wow some people are just know it all's damn.

      @@jasonstrout4502 that's how it should work, the screw should be the only thing holding the pulley in place.

  • @jonathansimmonds5784

    That's not how to use a puller, you wind in the bolt in the middle, the one on the shaft, that in turn pulls the gear off the shaft. That gear was so loose it could have been pulled off by hand!

    • @VintageWoodWorkshop
      @VintageWoodWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trust me it was really tight on there. Sure a commercial puller works as you described but obviously this is an alternative method that can work as well. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

      @@VintageWoodWorkshop Over the past 45 years of pulling all sorts of things off all sorts of shafts with home made pullers, often vintage British motorcycles, I think I've learned how to use them and I'm telling you again, the correct way, the most efficient way is to use the bolt in the middle on the shaft to do the pulling!

    • @jonathansimmonds5784
      @jonathansimmonds5784 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VintageWoodWorkshop And btw, anything really tight will wreck the wood before it lets go, ideally you have to use metal, apply as much pressure as the wrench will give you then give the central bolt a sharp hard hit with a good and heavy hammer, don't just expect pressure from the puller alone to free it up but seeing how badly you butchered the slot in the ply I doubt you're skilled enough to do the same in metal.

      @VintageWoodWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathansimmonds5784 “doubt you’re skilled enough” . Really? Haha, very cute. Obviously you’re not familiar with my work. This was a quick fix, using what I had on hand to see if it would work. It did not require precision.
