That's actually smart, because he could tell that his buddy is under influence of drugs(he was quiet and saw a cop smashing window with bare hands and a cop on a sunroof ) . He also said "I don't see anything" when officer asked him if he knows about busted taillight. Officer could think, that he was not aware about this problem because it happend recently.
