The Secret Arpeggios Of Racer X

- Here's the next episode of Breaking Chords with The Secret Arpeggios Of Racer X. As I mentioned in the video, we've looked at the music of Racer X and a lot of Paul Gilbert's fretboard wizardry several times on this channel, including two PG Three-For-All episodes, a Bruce Bouillet Three-For-All, Racer X & Mr. Big Chordplay lessons, and even a Paul Gilbert style Breaking Chords episode. But this time we're taking some of the string-skipping information we've explored in the past a little further by introducing some different shapes, sequences, and ideas from the mighty Paul Gilbert.
The examples in this lesson range from locating arpeggio fingerings using a string-skipped fingering shape/pattern that you can easily locate in Paul's music, not to mention the playing styles of other guitar greats - such as John Petrucci, Nuno Bettencourt, and Guthrie Govan (to name a few). Once we've declared a key and located an initial fingering for this lesson, we're mutating the arpeggio into major and diminished fingerings, followed by moving these arpeggios through various chord progressions and shifts in tonality.
If you're a fan of Paul's music or Racer X in general, you'll find plenty to sink your teeth into in this lesson that uses many of the familiar sounds and common elements found in Paul's playing style. PG is such a great accessible and fun teacher of so many rock,techniques and ideas ,never boring ,and always enjoys himself ,too,the octave ideas [re,arpeggios] is good ,too,to realise hes inspired some top players ,like JP too,says a lot about his approach,good one Dave ,Paul,is so inventive and no eltist attitude either ,just makes it enjoyable,you almost forget youre being taught such good info.
David when you said Harmonic Minor I immediately thought Uli Roth it would be so cool if you did something on him he's definitely in my top 10. Not that I play at all like him mind you. His solos are so well composed so many little melodies.

I had PG's 1st lesson on VHS back in the day. Learned quite a bit. This lesson brought back some of the things I learned from it. My issue was right and left hand syncopation. Never really could get the fast picking nailed down (enough to where it sounded great). Any chance on an upcoming lesson on sync? Always look forward to your lessons...and I'm an old retired semi-pro. You can, in fact, teach an old dog new tricks. HA! Keep up the great work Dave.

Paul is a total wizard. He's a super nice guy. And now, he dresses like Elvis Costello and he plays blues. Who woulda thunk it.
Yeah he really changed his style a lot in recent years but still he plays that style extremely well and I like his newer music. He still does some crazy alternate picking and shredding. I saw a video where he basically said he felt like he missed out on being able to play blues and decided to dedicate himself to learning that style. Honestly though he’s even better than guys like Bonamassa.
@@jb_50w78 He is. Paul is a wizard. He can do any style he wants to, at the highest level. He is a master. Blues is all about bends and feelz. Stevie Ray had it. BB King had it. Paul has it too.

Back in the day Saturdays and Sundays were when I could add another 8 hours to music. So in the mornings I'd spend time learning to read and write in standard notation and transcribe violin solos for the guitar or read theory books. This also kept me from playing 16 hours instead of the 8 I normally played each day. Too much can be too much, gotta do other things sometimes, lols (seriously, you can injure yourself though).

Loved the video. I'd like you to explain the picking pattern (right hand) at least once, though.
He did a string skipping arpeggio vid a while back that goes into more detail about using this shape. I'd have a watch at that one. If not, go check out some of Gilberts early vids. He illustrates his outside picking technique he uses for this sort of thing. Keep in mind a technique does not always translate so well to another persons body. I have much shorter fingers, so my technique for this is closer to Marty Friedmans, sort of.
Anyone struggling with this for either or both hands, I suggest trying this one first by eliminating the notes on the D string, just to get that skip under your fingers. Then add the lowest root note back in after your fingers have the skip memorized.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 I watched all of Dave’s videos (I’m a subscriber for more than one year, and a Patreon too, so I get the transcriptions), and I noticed he very rarely explains his right hand pattern. I don’t need full details, just need to know whether he goes away from standard alternate picking (starting with an upstroke, using economy picking, that sort of things). That would be a great addition to an already excellent lesson.

Question for you. So you're basically staying in the key of D major, but making the D major chord - the one chord - D minor and then your five would still be the A. Because in the key of D major you have two accidentals - f# and c# sharp. A is the five chord. We're not taking the 6th step of F major, which is D Aeolian?
