Jimmy, YOu really need to make 2 easy changes to your build here. You need to add a diagonal stringer to the support walls so they don't just fold over. The wall anchors you used wont be strong enough for more than 1 person. The stairs are a DEATH TRAP and not for the reason you think. You really need to cut a notch out of the riser and sit it on TOP of the edge of the deck, because the way you have it now, those screws will shear and those stairs will collapse. Theyre 2 really easy fixes, please take care of them before you or one of your friends gets hurt.
You need the grounds... tie all the grounds together on the copper post in the boxes, or twist connect them, they are grounded through the panel and go to earth. You should also run 14/2 Armoured cable (steel cased cable) up the wall to your first box.
2 things 1 plastic boxes do not need to be grounded to but yes he should tie all the grounds together with a wire-nut and 2 he did use 14/2 Romex (non metalic) what he should have used for the wall part is 14/2 mc (metal clad)
Twizz Yes your right I meant armourd cable ( Nomex here in Canada) auto correct I guess. There is a grounding post on plastic boxes...you can use it, or twist connectors, dealers choice.
jeremy rowe maby the grounding post is in Canada I've used this same boxes from lowes/depot here and never seen a post eather way just want jimbo to be safe and not loose all of those cars to a big fire!
just going to say this before hand. I am not a fully licenced electrician, BUT i went to college for an electrical pre apprenticeship course and have 1000 hours of my apprenticeship done and i graduated with an 82% average so im an electrician but not really. Youre going to want to connect the grounds because if something does go wrong and it shorts or the circuit pops from accidental overload youre going to have a bad time, the ground is there for a reason, and even if you twist the wires together and put a marett on them youll be fine, its one extra step that takes about 10 minutes tops, just use a needle nose to twist them together and itll go by so much quicker and easier.
HO CHI MANE 😂 why was dom up there hopping with his big ass trying too wreck jimmy hard work , jimmy was like fuck nigga if you demolished it your paying me back every dollar spent
I'm a carpenter by trade and I must say, good job bro. This is like every car guys dreams, to have a loft in the garage. The handrail even turned out alot nicer then I thought for being 2x4s. Props oakes!
Not sure how you feel about the soft white bulbs. If the yellowish light bothers you some 6500k daylight spectrum bulbs are closer to natural light. Easier on the eyes I think.
0laZz Kinda funny that you would say that. I've always had a problem with reoccurring headaches. I've found that they've diminished quite a bit since I switched to the 6500k bulbs. Could just be me. I just wanted to weigh in on what you said.
I love timelapses over before/afters because its always fun to watch stuff get done and also adds more content to the video. When a youtuber adds their own taste of music over timelapses instead of the typical vlog music, it makes it even better but i know that can be difficult with copyright stuff. Also, love the vids, keep up the great work!
I commented some wood lattice. That's what I did to keep my old dog from falling off. He was going blind and walked off the stairs but landed on a stack of paper products
Bro idk about everyone else but I LOVE these videos. The lights and loft look sick. Garage updates are as cool if not cooler than car upgrades. Keep em coming!
I love the loft and the change in content, I have been thinking of doing this project in my shop to add a little real estate for a while now, this video was so helpful for pricing and to see how sturdy it is using the cheaper stuff. Not trying to be an ass here but as for the welding area, you created a chamber to trap the gases created during welding. Probably not that big of a deal to some but it wouldnt hurt to get a vent for that area. Shops looking dope
Put some washers under the screws that connect the vertical railing to the beam. Also drill out the holes bigger in the rail than the beam so you get better clamping force. It doesn't take very much to split a 2x4 in that direction with so much leverage. Actually ideally you would use nuts and bolts with washers on both sides, but just under the screw heads would be a good improvement.
It definitely needs some good Tucker protection up there but it looks awesome! If you could get some cooler bulbs for under the loft I think it'd look better, it'd match the rest of the lighting.
Now you need a light in the loft! You should use a fluorescent light like the other stuff and put some color changing led strip lights around the ceiling and under the handle rail then it would looks so dope!!!
You should ground your boxes. There is usually a set screw inside the box for that purpose. Also those stairs need a notch at the top and to be lag bolted in with washers. Wouldnt hurt to put a toe board on your railing.
railing note as i just had to build one :) no more than 4 inches gap on bottom, no more than 4 inch space between balisters, must be able to take a 200lb moment force height should be something like min 36 for residential and 42 for commercial minimum.
Nice video, 2 36" led light strips would have taken 1/5th the time to wire and given more light (prob last longer). You can buy them for $36 at most hardware stores. I love the loft video, will be doing mines before it gets cold.
The moment you see the pause and hesitation on Don's face lol (big guy problems)You said what about these stairs lol. Definitely need to revise the framing approach just like draggonhedd mentioned. A useful tip I'd always recommend to customers is if you go to Menards they have a kiosk you can go build whatever it is you are building on it with the recommended materials and it will print you out the plans for it step by step piece by piece and the end cost of completion. (Not sure about Home Depot and Lowes)
Thank god u started something else. I think I haven't watched the last 3 or 4 episodes cause they looked like a bore. But I'm back. Thanks for the new content
I'm so jelly you have 2 of my favorite car. Just found your page and I'm subscribing just for the Fairlady footage! maybe one day I will be able to buy one. Keep up the good videos!
Why not go with white/daylight LED's to match the rest? I don't know if you have any Ikea's around but the LED assortment they have is pretty good and not expensive. The cheap remote controlled LED strips they have are a nice addition on the back wall of a possible work bench. Looking pretty good otherwise!
There should be padding planned into the max. allowable wattage you can load onto the circuit. Although the max calculated of a 15A circuit is 1800W, that’s using the entire breaker capacity. If you use all of the breaker’s capacity, you’ll trip it all the time, or even worse overheat the insulation on the wire and possibly burn something or cause a short. I read somewhere, 80% is a rule of thumb but don’t take my word for it.
Hey you ever seen clean welding bay? They are always covered in metal and grinder dust. Those lights will fill with conductive dust and you'll only find out when you get zapped. Good luck.
On the topic of time lapse, I’m a HUGE fan on natural sound timelapes. Also I know it’s too late now, but I would have made the railings taller so A) someone could lean on it comfortably and b) tall guys like you could still very easily fall over top of it. Just my 2 cents
I love how this popped up into my recommended and I thought it was the new loft and was excited . clicked on it then realized this was in the old garage. Mind blown
A tip for stripping the romex is to take a razor blade and score it on both sides at the length you want and it should just pull off, just make sure you dont press very hard as to not nic the wire :)
Loving the loft. If it was mine, id put some waterproof underlay and some carpet tiles on top of it though... Worried about spilling beer near live electrics. Also, dude rip out that janky-ass tin wall bathroom! Worth the extra $250 to replace that and have the loft over the full span. Get some drywall up and tile it, maybe cost you $400 max. Know its a lot of money but it's investment and futureproofing so..
If you want more light try using Daylight bulbs, the ones you have right now are a Soft white. They won’t be as Yellow as those, they’re more of a bright white light
You definitely need some cooler (as in color temp) bulbs for the new lights. The mismatched lighting color between them and the rest of the garage/shop is ticking my OCD a little lol. Not to mention it'd probably be better on your eyes if it was all one color.
Jimmy the ground wires you can connect them together and connect it to the ground that’s on the switch and it’ll be fine like the ones that you didn’t connect to nothing in the lights
Jimmy, YOu really need to make 2 easy changes to your build here.

draggonhedd some grade-A knowledge right there
I agree I added another thought but was going to say the same.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed!!
jimmy's community impresses me more and more, nice advice draggonhedd
^
this.
Jimmy Oaks, engineer, mechanic, carpenter, & electrician. What can’t this man do lmao
LivingKV slap a gnome within a month of saying so.
Fit in a miata :)
He fits in a Miata... but driving one is an issue.
Lol this man is none of those mentioned...
Wire something in parallel
You need the grounds... tie all the grounds together on the copper post in the boxes, or twist connect them, they are grounded through the panel and go to earth. You should also run 14/2 Armoured cable (steel cased cable) up the wall to your first box.
jeremy rowe big facts. They go on the light socket.
Nick Latronica
The ground leads can be twisted together, or screwed onto the box...the fixture has no ground provisions.
2 things 1 plastic boxes do not need to be grounded to but yes he should tie all the grounds together with a wire-nut and 2 he did use 14/2 Romex (non metalic) what he should have used for the wall part is 14/2 mc (metal clad)

If the stairs and loft were able to handle the stress test aka Don, i think were mint boys. 👌🏽
Hell yeah jimmy lights came out great can't wait to see the welding station once it's all set up! 200k here we come 👍🏼
Tylar Cobb he deserves at minimum 1million subs! 😁
Not sure how you feel about the soft white bulbs. If the yellowish light bothers you some 6500k daylight spectrum bulbs are closer to natural light. Easier on the eyes I think.
Ae86 Hachi and will match the rest of the shop, I did lighting for a couple of years now mismatched colors are my pet peeve
6500k is WAYY to blue, 3800-4300k bulbs are better because they have more light output, also 6500k bulbs will strain your eyes more.
0laZz Kinda funny that you would say that. I've always had a problem with reoccurring headaches. I've found that they've diminished quite a bit since I switched to the 6500k bulbs. Could just be me. I just wanted to weigh in on what you said.
5700K daylight, nice white light
I love timelapses over before/afters because its always fun to watch stuff get done and also adds more content to the video. should put some netting or something in between the railings would look cool too
and you literally just said what I thought okay lit
I commented some wood lattice. That's what I did to keep my old dog from falling off. He was going blind and walked off the stairs but landed on a stack of paper products
Yah i would hate to see a dog fall off , i dont give a fuck about people
Some plywood would look good too
This is amazing Jimmy!! For the welding station, make sure you have an air vent. Safety first!! Can’t wait to see it
Hey man I been doing electrical work for ten years and for your first time you did fantastic. Good job man
Bro idk about everyone else but I LOVE these videos. The lights and loft look sick. Garage updates are as cool if not cooler than car upgrades. Keep em coming!
200k real soon!!!
Keith Prince speaking of that... did Jimmy ever do that 100k special?
Hate to admit. I've been more excited to see the rest of the loft build then I've been in a while.
Super stoked on this build!
been really enjoying the different style videos the last couple of days, you're really putting in some work on the shop, keep it up man
I’m really digging the way you do time lapse. The loft was a great build btw.
Shop mod vids are lit the only thing car guys dream about as much as their cars are the garages they want for them . Keep it up great vids !
I love the loft and the change in content, I have been thinking of doing this project in my shop to add a little real estate for a while now, this video was so helpful for pricing and to see how sturdy it is using the cheaper stuff. Better wiring than I’ve seen qualified electricians do mate the fact u clipped it is great.
Get some cheap mesh to make sure nothing falls on the cars and of course Tucker’s safety is #1 priority XD
Todd Brown yeah I suggest the wood lattice. I used it for my old dogs safety when he went blind.
You NEED TO ADD THE GROUND. THE GROUND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. Or earth wire as you called it
Carsen Oden no ground on the fixtures. Unequal loads carried though the neutral. However those boxes need to be grounded.
Carsen Oden calm down brother!
It definitely needs some good Tucker protection up there but it looks awesome! If you could get some cooler bulbs for under the loft I think it'd look better, it'd match the rest of the lighting.
Nothing wrong with a time lapse for the boring stuff love the vids dude easily my favorite person to watch on youtube
DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR GROUNDS! TIE THEM ALL TOGETHER AND GROUND AT THE SOURCE! DON'T BURN DOWN THE SHOP!
DUKE YOU ROCK! IT LOOKS AMAZING! WORTH EVERY MINUTE SPENT ON IT!
"JACK OF ALL TRADES"
I love the shop mod videos it is something new
love how evenly you spaced and mouted the lights was very satisfying for my ocd lol.
Now you need a light in the loft! You should use a fluorescent light like the other stuff and put some color changing led strip lights around the ceiling and under the handle rail then it would looks so dope!!!
Can’t wait to see this channel grow. Hard working guys like you deserve it!
You should ground your boxes. There is usually a set screw inside the box for that purpose.
Also those stairs need a notch at the top and to be lag bolted in with washers.
Wouldnt hurt to put a toe board on your railing.
Lol I love when him said that he needs to prop up the stairs and don stopped and hesitated so hard and the look on his face was priceless
railing note as i just had to build one :) no more than 4 inches gap on bottom, no more than 4 inch space between balisters, must be able to take a 200lb moment force height should be something like min 36 for residential and 42 for commercial minimum.
Get flags for the railings, Japan forsure and 2 other ones
love jimmy's filming lol, all the in between stuff is funny af!!
5:33 “if you’re an electrician sorry if you’re cringing” 😂🤦🏻♂️
Exam in 20 mins. 13 min video. We're good
Joe Taylor you pass?
Matt White 87% mate pass was 70%
Joe Taylor Nice
I like the timelapses. It helps tell the story of your day👍🏼👍🏼
Throw some AC/90 or BX armored cable for the jump between the wall plug and the first light. Lumex (nmd90) is a no-no for metal installs.
Nice video, 2 36" led light strips would have taken 1/5th the time to wire and given more light (prob last longer). You can buy them for $36 at most hardware stores. I love the loft video, will be doing mines before it gets cold.

Ayye dat 360p squad always here for my boi jimbo
Loving the garage mods content :) keep up the good work!! shop and cars are looking good as always!
Dream set up there, chill on the couch casting couch playing PlayStation whilst looking at the dream builds 🙌🏼👌🏽
Just think. The extra cars you picked up and the other shop mod stuff you could have gotten a lift!
Another enjoyable video never disappointed. Funny how there are always professional builders and carpenters in the comments lol.
James Ireland not that hard of a trait to learn...
Carpentry and electrical are must know trades man.
Anyone else notice the "Engine Oil" message on the Saturn? Time to hit the auto parts shop! Great video.
"I did not anticipate this taking as long as it is". Is the title of every renovation project I've ever done. Awesome vid my dude
Jimmy this is so sick. Looks great and added space win win! These shop mods been cool.
Jimmy please look up floor joist blocking, its really simple and it will make the whole structure up top more stable and sturdy.
Should you consider giving the wood a coat of varnish to stop moisture affecting it down the road?

Use metal brackets to hold the boards that support the ply wood floor for extra strength support
Great job man! Such great inspiration to get out there and make something cool!! Keep it up!!
I love what your doing it the channel and keeping it fresh, keep up the great work and keep killing it jimmy!
"This old garage", starring Jimmy Villa. Nice.
I love how this popped up into my recommended and I thought it was the new loft and was excited .
clicked on it
then realized this was in the old garage.
Mind blown
Seriously impressed lol. For someone with no experience, it's really good
A tip for stripping the romex is to take a razor blade and score it on both sides at the length you want and it should just pull off, just make sure you dont press very hard as to not nic the wire :)
Yung OSHA in the cut, comin thru with that safety boi
Brooooo that looks so dope not just the lights but the whole loft thing... You should definitely go all out with the loft tho haha
I’m actually really enjoying the shop upgrades
You could always go round the railing with some steel angle brackets afterwards to reinforce it. Great build though Jimmy!
That’s coming alone nicely Jimmy 👌🏼 keep up the good work mate.
This came out fantastic. Good shit guys.
Loving the loft. If it was mine, id put some waterproof underlay and some carpet tiles on top of it though... Worried about spilling beer near live electrics. deff digging the new content
You right about the grounds don't really need them older houses no such thing all they do is help with surges good vid
Seeing those 300zx/z32 makes me really get one soon.
Timelapse are cool man, they keep the flow of the video going 👍
Great job dude!!! A+ on making it Tucker safe.
You may need a center support under that floor, Or some sort of way to distribute the weight.
Let's go, way to build that loft Jimmy O
If you want more light try using Daylight bulbs, the ones you have right now are a Soft white. They won’t be as Yellow as those, they’re more of a bright white light
When Jimmy hit that light switch, it went right to an ad. Haha
Joe Saunders nine too....like I'm going to buy a new Ford....I'm watching a guy build jdm, drift and tune cars and a countryside Ford ad....yeah.
Window screen mesh would look good for the railing and is pretty cheap
You definitely need some cooler (as in color temp) bulbs for the new lights. The mismatched lighting color between them and the rest of the garage/shop is ticking my OCD a little lol. Not to mention it'd probably be better on your eyes if it was all one color.
Hell yea good job jimmy looks good, best shop mod EVER
JimmyFIx , new channel! You're welcome! haha
time lapse is sick and keep on it, dope ass loft
Jimmy the ground wires you can connect them together and connect it to the ground that’s on the switch and it’ll be fine like the ones that you didn’t connect to nothing in the lights
Congratulations Jimmy this was a great idea, today I just noticed that you have three red cars and three black cars, how funny, good job
Jimmy , you’re such an inspiration ❤️
Yeoo Jimmy you should put the TV on a swivel wall mount so its easily pushed to the wall!
Jimmy, the man with many talents
How has no one commented on that line he quoted at the end “So much room for activities” ..!?
Favorite line from that movie haha 😅
Jimmy you got the sickest garage
3'-6" is Connecticut building code for guardrails. Good job bro.
I'm a electrician and you did a dame good job 👍
Lovin the shop mod vids and the time lapses are dope✌
The time lapses are better than just skipping ahead, the shop looks sick tho!
Jimmy saving the day with a new video
Should totally get some cheap sign board (korflute we call it in aus) and zip tie it to your railings as a cheap fill in for the rails
