  • Dennis Deep Cuts #39 is an excuse to dig into The Clash Discography. I am ranking the albums from best to worst and I'm talking a bit about what the band meant and still mean to me.
One of the most important rock band of the past 50 years The Clash creativity and output is pretty unparalleled. See what album I like the most and find out if Cut The Crap is really that bad.

The Clash has always been such an important band to me, ever since I stole their self-titled from my older brother as a kid. Still one of my favorites all these decades later. Sandinista is still a masterpiece. Great list!

Sandinista is a very good record. Charlie don't surf should be a main theme song on Apocalypse Now soundtrack. I agree London Calling is their best album ... It's a masterpiece!

One of my favourite bands of them all! They didn't only change my perception of music but also my view on humanism and politics.
    My 2 cents:
The Clash - there's really nothing more to add - a classic, but not every song is up to the insanely high standard(Cheat, Deny etc) - 4th best
GEER - pretty much the same, but in my opinion the production is a bit too bombastic..lets also not forget that this was followed by the Cost Of Living EP - one of the best british punk 7" ? maybe along with the Damned - Friday 13th and Buzzcocks spiral scratch? - 5th best
London Calling - well...almost perfection? I am surprised you hate Brand New Cadillac, I think its a banger. I personally hate Lovers Rock though... - subjectively the best, but only my 3rd favourite
Sandinista! - Insane, I like to compare it to the White Album, even though its probably even more out there. I love to listen to it back to back, its a gift that keeps on giving and theres always something new to find. - my fav
Combat Rock - a lot of potential was lost by streamlining it, but I love it - 2nd best
Obviously Cut The Crap is a bit of a trainwreck, which is a real shame as the second Clash lineup was really good, theres good demos and bootlegs from that era. Make sure to check out "Mohawk Revenge" - you can find it here on youtube as well as discogs...

I do love Dirty Punk and This Is England from Cut the Crap, and This Is England was included in the band assembled The Essential Clash.

For a second there was a twinkle in your eye like "I'm going to put London Calling at #2" and I thought you were going to as well. But that is the thing about rankings, yours aren't going to be mine, and mine aren't going to be someone else's. Great video, Dennis!

Wow, I must say I'm pretty shocked to see Give Em Enough Rope so low. Obviously its all subjective, even as far as the B side goes, Stay Free is a fantastic track. In terms of production I also think its a major upgrade over s/t.

I would move combat rock to 3, but otherwise very similar feelings. I asked about Cut the Crap in one of the first videos. I sometimes wonder if rerecorded (by whomever) there might be something in it that the awful production is hiding, but I'm afraid that the only thing that actually works on that record is Strummer's voice, which is irreplaceable. It has a few things in it that I like but the bump in quality is just incredible for a band of that stature, specially at that particular time. Maybe it was Strummer's attempt to getting back to basics but I think it was Rhode's desire to burn it all down that succeeds. It is fascinating, everybody has tried to erase it, even the fans and critics seem to be willing to rewrite history for the Clash, on the testament of those other (great) five albums, but this one is a story of madness.

You're brave. I wouldn't rank Clash LPs, because there's too many good songs on too many collections. I don't really see the Clash as an "LP" type of band- like, say, Black Flag. Black Flag, you sign up to listen to a mood for 45-60 minutes, whereas with the Clash, it's more like you just listen to whatever songs you like. In 40 years, I don't think I've ever just sat down with the Clash record, and listened end-to-end. It's more like, hmm, I wanna hear Bank Robber, then Guns on the Roof then, White Man in Hammersmith Palais. Or, I wanna hear London Calling, Clash City Rockers, and Guns of Brixton, you know?

I was so certain the order would be identical to my choices, in the end I had the top 2 reversed. Both brilliant, but London Calling sounds like the band trying on different genres like clothing, Sandinasta sounds like they started trying to make their own clothes.
