On this episode I'm doing a new segment called Fair Shake where we take a poorly recived, hated or problematic album and give it a listen with and open heart and an open mind.
I am joined by my good friend and Swedish rockstar Peder Stenberg from The Deportees and we dig deep into this fascinating album.
One of the most hated albums in Metal.
But is it really that bad?
Is it and avantgarde master piece?
What is the album actually about?
Find out on this fantastic episode.

Bra video Dennis! Jag vet inte hur mycket koll du har på Death Metal, men Morbid Angels Illud Divinum Insanus skulle passa in i detta tema!

for me Lulu, or any album of this nature, an album that throws curve balls in order to make you stop, an album to be enjoyed deeply by but a few, is meant to be listened to and maybe even enjoyed with a very strong intent to explore it. Obviously not for everyone. Nothing is for everyone, except maybe air, (and even air isnt equal anymore). For me i listen to these weird conceptual albums while drawing or sitting with friends on the porch late at night, where we laugh and discuss moments as they come up and maybe we ignore the music for a bit and then get absorbed again.
I dig those albums that push you and challenge you to rethink what you know and expect from musicians and music in general.
So im down with the album, not an important album, but cool and weird and fun to pull apart.

Haha, I love that Petter says:“ I like more to talk about Lulu than listen to it!“
I was just listening to Mistress Dread for the first time as I was ignoring the album, but it definitely doesn’t work for me. It just like Petter says it‘s a mash-up that doesn’t fit together. Still a very enjoyable episode 👊

I agree that Metallica's best work was their first 4 albums. They definitely blended my love of punk with metal and blew my mind as a kid. The first proper guitar solos I ever learned were the intro and outro solos to Fade to Black. I didn't get into and appreciate Lou Reed until later in life, though. I'll have to check this one out with an open mind, lol. Great episode!

Lulu is probably my favorite Lou Reed project after the two first velvet records. Probably my favorite Metallica album with ride the lightning at second place. It’s sometimes a laugh out loud, hilarious comedy album and sometimes an actually quite dark and spiritual experience. Sometimes it’s even both! I always kind of imagine Lou Reed just choosing Metallica as a back up band because the combination is probably the most stupid idea. Especially for the type of album he wanted to make. Like it wouldn’t be the first musical joke he’s ever done. But I guess we’ll never truly know and I’m okay with that

That’s such a spot on assessment. Love that weird album.

Just Started watching so I dont know what you will say about it but my opinion on this is a bit divisive. I Like Metallica and I Love huge chunks of Lou Reeds Work. I can See what Lou was going for. I read he wanted a massive and uncompomising heavy Sound but I dont think Metallica were able to Deliver that. I think the slick sound and especially Hetfields vocal contributions Just dont Work. Can you Imagine how this album would have sounded with a band Like melvins?or Swans?
Still, I Sometimes listen to Lulu and I am still fascinated with it

Song X ... I love this album, but can you give it a Fair Shake? "Pat Metheny confounded fans and critics alike with this opening salvo for his new label, Geffen, delivering among the most uninhibited, collective meltdowns ever released on a major pop label. Song X served notice that this was one artist who refused to be pigeonholed. In joining forces with jazz maverick Ornette Coleman, Metheny midwifed a compelling declaration of principles on behalf of experimental musicians." --Chip Stern

OK, you convinced me- there is an argument that "Lulu" is a worthy piece of art, but, like Peder said- it's better to talk about than listen to. Then, again, I've never been a Metallica fan. Like, even back in the 80's when I liked thrash, even of the "crossover" type, Metallica seemed "second rate" to me. Slayer, Exodus, and (later) Sepultura, Testament, and Kreator were better, if you ask me. Still, you're right, there is an art to this.

How about, Kiss' 'Music From 'The Elder''.... i couldnt stand it when i first heard it, as a younger guy wanting something very serious and profound in my music.... but now.... i kinda hear the intention behind it and laugh at all its choices, and enjoy it for the Kiss that it is ....but.... not my fav album of all time still....
OR ...Love you George!.... 'Electronic Sounds', by George Harrison.... I have listend to this pretty high and it was just..... unsettling.... not necessarily bad....
But more seriously, 'Union' by Yes. LOOOOOOOOOVE Yes, unbeatable classic prog, Close to the Edge is incredible......'Union'..... not so much.... A bizarre concoction of an album that is full of 'session musos' that needn't be there....and serve only to distract and boggle the mind of your ears..... though.... it has some charm. It's still Yes.

The Elder is a good call. And I like that George Harrison album in all its weirdness. Not a fan of Yes at all so… haha.

@@Dennisdeepcuts Georges album is full of great ideas that’s for sure, and it’s bold to release such thing.
And is it the synth noodling and the vocals delivery and perhaps the endless wandering of the music that doesn’t sit well with you with ‘Yes’?
I feel you have a distinct ‘edge’ in your own music, which is also apparent in your music taste, that Yes really does not have.
      So I get that. 🤘

I've always loved this album to death, when it came out I had it on repeat for weeks. But I believe instead that the heavy riffs and the dark noisey soundscapes go very well with Lou's off-key chants and outrageous poetry. I knew right away that most metal fans would've hated it. Metallica is one of my favorite metal bands, they were never afraid to experiment and change and there's a lot of great material even in their most hated albums like "Load" and "Reload". On the other hand I consider "Velvet Undergound & Nico" and "Transformer" two of the greatest pop albums ever made.
Bowie is my favorite artist of all time and I believe that he was absoutely serious when he call the album a masterpiece.
