My university had the same program! I taught a class on Fandom culture, using anthropology journal articles based on fandom and online communities as our readings. It was 1 hour credit to teach and to take. These courses were good at filling in that last hour to stay as a full time student when your other courses added up to weird numbers, or helped break up the stress of all your other courses. They also came with an oppotunity for students to learn how to teach a proper college course.
I also took an improv class, a class on Bollywood, and an ASL class this way; other classes I saw involved wine-tasting, beer brewing, the history and culture of Black hair and hairstyles, and Batman.

I was a language major, so I only needed two semesters of science. I took a course in the Astronomy department called "Extraterrestrial Life: Are We Alone in the Universe?", taught by an astrophysicist. A quarter of the students dropped after the first class, when it was revealed that it was going to be a deep dive into what exactly had to happen just right from the Big Bang onward for life to evolve and NOT about Area 51 and UFO sightings.
(I hung in there. It was fascinating, but completely useless, skill-wise. Spoiler: According to the Prof, we are almost certainly not alone, but we won't get proof in our lifetimes.)

I don't understand your college education system! IT MAKES NO SENSE! I'm British, at high school we study like 10/12 subjects, most people go to college (which is something most 16-18 year olds go to) where we pick 3/4 subjects to study and then some people go to uni to study 1 subject and they take classes within that field. It blows my mind that american's seem to major in psychology and they take classes in everything but psychology. How did you major in it when you take so many other courses in other departments? But seriously Joanna, We have a degree (3 years of your life on one subject) on the subject of GROWING GRASS! literally! This is for people who want to tend to football pitches at Man Utd etc. 3 YEARS ON EXCLUSIVELY STUDYING GRASS JOANNA!

I like to learn; I'm a curious person. But I don't want to take the course and dedicate my life to it for four months. I'm a linguistics major why do I have to take CHEM 100? Why couldn't I have just done that in high school? And why is it so encouraged to go to a four-year?

I love Joanna, but in my college at UT Austin, we have been getting more about the real world to the point right now my professor of Intro to China told us " I dont want you memorizing dates of Emperors or their names but I want you to understand how the past is influenced/marked present-day China socially and politically. The test is not multiple choice but open-response answers."
I feel like colleges are adapting to these changes and all the courses I have taken - even though I am a Pre-Med Chinese Language major- are SO USEFUL and interesting and I am loving it.

One of the coolest courses I took in college (albeit one that I totally didn't need to take) was called Reaction to the Past. Basically the entire course was a game in which we all received characters from a certain time in history (ours was immediately after Caesar's assassination) along with the respective character dossier that explained our motivations, alliances, enemies, etc. and we had to play out events as though we were those people. We were certainly allowed to deviate from what actually happened (or it wouldn't be a game) BUT we had to keep it realistic, and throughout the course we had small history essays to submit. It was so much fun.

We talked about artists from all genres on how they pushed boundaries or what made them iconic and we had to incorporate their art style in our selfies. Got an A in that class 😂😂

Here in Spain, you cannot choose subjects that aren't in your degree syllabus. Well, in theory you could choose "free study credits", but since other degrees are taught in different buildings, and sometimes buildings are lot of kilometres away, or even in other cities, people normally never take them.
I would have liked to learn Far East languages when in college, but those were taught only at a different university 35 kilometres north. TOO BAD.

As a person who climbs trees for a living at times, let me say that If your in forestry or planning to become an arborist or utility tree trimmer then a course in tree climbing is useful...Why you may ask? Because lots of trees don't have low hanging branches or at times are more then a meter wide in diameter. Also it's useful to help you learn climbing and rigging knots and rope use so you don't fall out of said trees.

First of all UABC is the public State-sponsored university in Baja California. And has a system that you can take any class form any faculty in the state to get credits.
So aside the engineering faculty (where i study) there is an arts faculty where a lot of classmates take clases because the entre university is full of weebs.
There are courses going form manga drawing and voice dubbing (fair enough) but the one that takes the cake is called "Análisis estético y sociocultural del anime" (AESTHETIC AND SOCIOCULTURAL ANALYSIS OF ANIME).
In a nutshell, that courses prepares you to become in an anime reviewer and i shit you not: you get more credits taking a clases where you watch and review seasonal anime than taking a mandatory calculus courses.
