That's rough =/ While I wish she'd take more care of herself while sick (because that can potentially cause more severe damage down the line), I admire her commitment to her group and her audience to still go out there and perform as best as she can. She takes the phrase "the show must go on" quite literally here and I respect her choice to push through it.

That's how Phantom should be performed, imho. Symphonic metal and a bigger, heavier sound really suits it. I don't think I'll ever hear another version that tops this one. Kind of with now the entire thing existed with a Marko and Tarja version. Haven't heard anything else that felt that right. Not a vocal expert or a student of opera as a style, but regarding the commentary about the sliding, I think its possibly a difference between being overly formal and more openly natural. I understand of course that coming in with an onset directly on pitch and nailing it there every time is viewed, at least in the operatic world, as "correct", but I think stylistically, making choices that deviate sound more inviting. It only works when the singer has the ability to land the onset when they want. Obviously sloppy singing would be far less impactful or impressive. Not sure I'm making any sense, but, for me, I love her choices here.

Thank you! This is THE version of the Phantom of the Opera for me. I love it so much!
Tarja is Finnish, so part of the reason why she pronounces her words the way she does, is because of her Finnish accent.
Like in the word "opera," the r was rolled like it is in Finnish. It's rolled the same way like in her name, Tarja.
Nightwish was at the forefront of creating symphonic metal. When they started, Tarja had to learn how to change her voice so that it suits the metal she is singing. She didn't want that the audience couldn't understand what she was singing.
So for years, Tarja had to teach herself how to modify her voice to do that... to suit the metal.... since there was no one who could teach her.
Now, almost 20 years later, Tarja and Marko are touring together and singing this song again.
I highly recommend listening to Tarja sing now. She has trained her voice for almost 20 years since this concert here.

I read so much in the Comments about this Concert, about Tarjas Flue, abouther being Finnish, but what I don't read is. This Song ist from the End of an Era Live, what means, it was the last concert of Tarja with Nightwish. I was there this Night, and the Emotions, the Feelings, the Tension, We cry, we don't understand anything, the Atmosphere in the Hall was just intense. And when i have it right in my head, Phantom of the Opera was the last Song she sings with Nightwish. So to be honest, it was one of the baddest Versions of Phantom of the Opera in the Tarja Era, but the most intense and it was so full of Feelings. It was the best Nightwishconcert for me and the last I watch, because Annette Olson and Floor Jansen was not the Nightwishsingers for me

She did not know about the open letter during the concert. She even described the separation later on as bunch of misunderstandings. And open letter later after the concert was sort of crude way to oust a member and timing was big part why it caused such an upheaval in fans. During the concert it's unlikely Tarja knew she'd be singing no more with the band. Old stuff that has been talked over and over. Nightwish is Holopainen's project and as brilliant as the man is musically, socially he didn't handle this maturely at all.

Worth noting that Tarja (the singer) is singing in what for her is her 4th or 5th language. She speaks Finnish and Swedish natively, speaks German and studied in Germany, is married to an Argentinian, and lives in Spain, so speaks Spanish. I think she deserves a little latitude for some pronunciation/diction issues when singing in English. You try singing in your 5th language and see how you get on...

    • @pmHidden
      @pmHidden 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@Somm_RJ That's just bullshit. Sure, if you've been learning singing English songs from the very beginning, you learn to sing in English without an accent, but if you've spent most of your time singing local music and opera, you'll keep your accent when singing as well and it takes time and effort to get rid of it.
Singing doesn't "transcend language differences" (in the way you're suggesting it does), it's simply a different area you can learn in a different language from your native language. Give a typical English singer a non-English song and they'll also have an obvious accent because they've only ever learned how to sing in English.

The contradiction between Marco and Tarja is what makes this my favorite version of Phantom of the Opera. They play there parts so well. But then again, I love songs were a female singer sounds like a beautiful angel and a male singer sounds like an ugly beast. At the beginning, I Bellerive that Tarja was intentionally creating the sound of a woman in a haze or dream. She was creating the mental image of a woman who's sleep is interrupted by a man who enters her dreams every night. At the end, I again believe that she intentionally made it sound like she couldn't hold her note. I believe that she wanted to create the visualization that her character is exhausted from being forced to sing the last part by the Phantom. The reason I believe this is because it matched the movement she made at the end. Her throwing her head and arms back as if to pass out. Marco and Tarja not only acted out their characters very well in this performance, but they matched the vocals of the character and what the character was going through. This isn't only a song sung by a band on stage, this was a performance by very good performers.

Over all there is one thing which is very important. It's a Heavy Metal Band playing their version of a musical type of song. And, even if I whatched the german version of the musical twice, I like this Nightwish version more because of it's Heavy Metal roots.
While Tarja is classical trained, but is in no way an opera singer, Marko is just a "Heavy Metal Guy". Ok, he is one of my favorites for sure and a great singer/performer/entertainer, but he stays in his vocalrange, which is phenomenal. I just watched these two singers nearly two weeks ago performing this piece, it's magic what happens with their voices together.

Thank you for this interesting and informative reaction! About the R in “opera”. You are the second one I hear commenting about it. Iis so fascinating that you are commenting it as a strong R! To my Finnish ear there is no R whatsoever in that “opera” 😄 My ear just can’t get how it could be softer without dropping it out, and my tongue can’t produce a softer R. So, I don’t know for sure, but I assume it’s totally an accent thing for Tarja. As an expert of phones and pronouncing (from perspective of singing) you can draw your conclusions about how the fact that Finnish is a phonetic language (with harsh and clear sounds) can affect on Finnish singers’ pronouncing other languages.

Everyone who pointed out that Tarja was sick, I have a different point of view regardless of that fact. I remember her saying that after years of singing in opera style she felt more confident singing in her rock/pop vocal style in which, at that time, she had no directions or training, she was just experimenting in that style, looking for comfort. This happened when Once came out. And I remember listening to that style, and in this particular performance she was still inexperienced in switching from belt voice to chest voice, and when you see her without the fanaticism and devotion that we Nightwish fans have, it becomes quite obvious; it was still at that time an immature voice on many levels, which still felt fantastic because of the novelty of the genre, her voice was somehow cleaner than the singers of Therion and more powerful than Theatre of Tragedy or Tristania, they were heavier than The Gathering, so we were captivated by them. But I do recognize that her voice has matured, she is an incredible artist. I am not a big fan of her solo career, but that does not mean that i should ignore her enormous talent. She will always have my respect.

Honestly, I didn't find this reaction negative, he was quite respectful and made a very valid constructive criticism. It's funny how the Nightwish fans react when people don't say what they expect, which is "they're perfect and immaculate" and suddenly those criticisms turn into something negative. On the other hand, I heard when he said the part that he thought was beautiful, the several times he said that Tarja has a good technique even though he didn't understand her choices. He was also complimenting Marko! None of this was really negative.

Even though I'm over Nightwish, Marco still the best Phantom!
Part of the peculiarities you've found in Tarja (she's Finnish, so the j is pronounced as an i) are just the style she adopted in her transition from opera to metal, part is that she plays Christine not as an ingenue, but as an ambitious and naive girl seduced by the Phantom. Marco was leaning hard on the grit in his voice, he can go much cleaner, even to the top notes.
The play between very lyrical and soft and gritty and powerful vocalizations is common in metal. The best example is probably Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian in Valhalla, where he keeps transitioning between those as the song goes between the outer and inner voice of the characters. The live versions of the piece are also perfect to illustrate the spirit of heavy metal and the relation between musicians and audience. I could write reams about it, but it's better shown. Blind Guardian are also another of Dan's favorite bands (and mine and almost every power metal fan's) and Valhalla is always asked in reaction channels, most end up doing it. The Wacken version with The Bard's Song is the favorite, but any live version will do. th-cam.com/video/i-IcX_bccFc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ygfinjnAwJ2K00YV

Its actually interesting to hear how the pronouncing striked some people since my Finnish ears never caught anything out of the ordinary :D

These are my favorite final notes she's done: th-cam.com/video/7o6MLEWDO_4/w-d-xo.html , th-cam.com/video/6ruRqu-Wa40/w-d-xo.html. Her vibratto sounds a lot more consistent and faster in the 2019 performance tho we can't see her jaw, in the second video its visible she doesn't shake her jaw as much, the movement there is mostly for pauses and vowel changes, as you've mentioned. As a spinto, she have a naturally very dark and heavy voice tho, and those notes are on the very top of her range so it's really probably not so easy for her.

Not for the first time, your reaction leaves me with a very mixed reaction. Beware of rash judgements - go listen to Tarja singing Mein Herr Marquis or Song to the Moon and you will get an idea of the quality of her technique and her vibrato. Her interpretation (confusion, fear) at the beginning is exactly in line with Christine's character, same with the slight distortion on "beware the Phantom of the Opera". In my opinion, your criticisms of the last note are excessive and unjustified. Tarja always has excellent breath support (you can see with your own eyes her breath support at work in her beautiful rendition of Pie Jesu). She may have been a bit apprehensive at the final run, given that she had no voice to sing at the rehearsals the previous day, that she still had over a dozen songs to get through and that this was the band's biggest show to date, in their own country and being filmed for a DvD. It can't have been easy doing these runs with Marko screaming in her ears either. But she approached it confidently and delivered. One reactor stated that, in theater performances, the final note is never sung live these days but pre-recorded. Tarja did an entire world tour singing this every night, which she wouldn't have done if she was struggling with it. This was the last concert of that world tour and her last concert with Nightwish. And it got the thumbs up from Andrew Lloyd Webber himself.

I disagree - I thought his comments were perfectly fair and objective. He clearly said that there was subjectivity in every listener but was careful to be extremely respectful and, as far as I could see, gave the benefit of the doubt to Tarja at every opportunity (in the sense of assuming everything was down to a choice rather than any vocal shortcoming).
I suspect that if he listened to more of Tarja in this era, he might privately realise that what he heard wasn't entirely down to a specific interpretation of character. Tarja has a lovely tone but I predict he will be more impressed when he hears Floor.
I'll just offer one other brief comment (as I sense it may be a touchy area for you) but wrt your views on breath support, that is obviously also all relative - there are songs where Tarja uses multiple breaths where others apparently don't need them so be open to appreciating others as much or more than your favourites.

@@qman2261 : Floor/Henk version might be technically more precise, but don't make him expect too much of it. But you certainly can hear the wear and tear in Tarja's voice. Nightwish female lead sings *a lot* more hours per week than your average classical singer, and this was the last concert of the whole tour. Tarja having trouble keeping her voice in shape with their then frantic tour schedule was one of the things that increased friction in the band.
Well, they have learned and are now on a multi-year break from touring to get enough rest.

I think there's something else to be said about the context of the genre when it comes to their contrasting vocals. The studio version of the song was released in 2002, and in gothic metal, the late 90s and early 00s were the peak of this "Beauty and the Beast" vocal approach (check out Liv Kristine in the first two albums of Theatre of Tragedy). Nightwish definitely chose an excellent song to cover and adapt this approach for, but I feel like some of the choices they made definitely also falls into this wider context of where gothic metal was at the time.

The initial 'slide'... you mention it could be a vocalist being lost'... how about the character being lost? Christine is trying to figure out her relationship with The Phantom... that'd make me a bit lost.
Anguish and confusion reigns... the dry punchy pitch-perfect notes always sounded to 'on-point' for the emotional content of the piece.
The sharp cutoff : Tarja was sick that night. Pulmonary/sinus issues, that inevitably affect the performance.
Over dramatized diphthongs : Her native language is Finnish, and her more intense training was in Germany. Pronunciation clashes are inevitable.
The "Opera" throwaway : I always thought this was to contrast this song with the staid environs of operatic performance.
If it was Floor on an attitude-day, she might have growled it out.
Cuz in metal, anything can be done... and this is bringing the Phantom into a new performance arena.
Vowel shapes : again, cuz Finnish. Listen to spoken Finnish and grok what happens to vowels when they are stretched out.
    "So grungy" ... yes, precisely what I'd expect from a cellar-dwelling mind-worm.
A clear baritone sounds like a court barrister, to me (in typical Phantoms)
But Marco sounds like a voice-stealing Phantom should... sinister-at-the-edges is necessary., again for my tests.
The initial singing-in-unison gives me the feel of two characters who have not yet merged.
"Room for interpretation" viva the Room !!
The Jaw Shake - I've always thought her health condition may have given cause for a moment of self-doubt as she entered the 'operatic phase' . To me, the worst of the shake occurs when she is doing the initial drop-position of the lower jaw... the feeling of casting that power out through a sore naso-pharynx is something I probably can't adequately imagine. I bet my jaw might hesitate a bit on the way down. By the third sustained note, the shake is (as you noted) nearly imperceptible. Either it's "confidence-regained' or 'numbness-attained' ... not sure which.. I just know head/neck anatomy.. not a singer.

Tarja's English pronunciation was not very good in the first Nightwish albums. This is her last concert with Nightwish, and she got a bit better at that during the years, but there's still some of if that very Finnish way of pronuncing English. We Finns call it 'rally-english', because Finnish rally drivers are well known for their poor pronunciation.
Tarja sang quite purely operatic way in the beginning of her Nightwish career. Later she started experimenting with a bit more pop/rock style singing, including pronunciation. And I think she took some influences from Marco's singing. And since they are singing a duet, she is maybe trying to match his singing a bit, including pronunciation.
I think all these things add up, and there are some bit weird pronunciation and vowel choices. I think her singing is not yet ready in all aspects at this time. But somehow quite many people like that bit weird way of pronouncing, it gives her a distinct sound.

Tarja never sang fully classical with NW. She did a Wikipedia interview where she explains why. She says she sings “classical adjacent”. She does do concerts where she sings in her full classical voice and you can tell a huge difference. It doesn’t even sound like the same person. That’s why I always think it’s funny when people critic her opera singing. When you criticized her sliding, she definitely chose the latter because her fans are metal fans. They don’t want to hear full on Opera during a metal concert. If you listen to the version with the new singer, she does a more full opera sound at the beginning and it doesn’t fit.

One of the most favorite versions of Andrew Loyd Webber. I belive there are a lot of brilliant singer that sang the part of Christine. To pretend Tarja did the best wouldn´t be right. She did a pretty good especially at the end of a metal concert. When it comes to Marco I don´t belive any male part ever sang better than he did in this version. Both did later other versions but never as goog as this one. It doesn´t mean Marco has the best voice on this planet although he has e pretty good voice. But if you take the charecter of the phantom ... It´s an ugly creepy murderer who kidnapped and brainwashed Christine. Do you really want a clean straight voice for that character ? It´s a good but also creepy voice with grid that is really able to come into someones mind like the lyric says.

In rock and metal music Tarja never used full operatic technique, she mixed it with more... ugh... I don't know english word for it... I mean with techniques that are used in not classical or operatic music. So it's not full operatic technique, it's something between, because she said that full operatic technique would sounds bad with metal music. From Nightwish years with Tarja, I really recommend song "The Siren" from the same concert The End of an Era. But if you really want to hear what Tarja can, I recommend her solo stuff, rock and metal songs, classical pieces, dark christmas music, everything is amazing.

I'm curious what would you say about vocals by their vocalist Sono, in my personal opinion he's really amazing, so I would love to hear something about him from professional singer. :)
Also I really want to hear something about my favourite vocalist Ruki from band The Gazette, I personally think he's using some classical techniques in his singing, but I don't have any music education, so... Please react to their song "Dim Scene" live from 2014, it's on TH-cam with title "the GazettE - DIM SCENE (HD live)". They ate playung rock and metal, you can find many different styles and genres in their discography.
Both bands I recommended are from japanese movement calles Visual Kei, it's as music, fashion and subculture, in both bands all members are guys, but western listeners, when they aren't familiar with Visual Kei, often think that musicians are all female, because they are weating makeup etc, and some of them have that feminine stage image. Visual Kei is in some point connected with kabuki, traditional japanese theater where all roles were played by men, so Visual Kei is like full package, both music and visuals are creating art. And in most of cases lyrics and emotions are very important, it was created to show japanese people that it's ok to be different, to talk about what you really think and about difficult topics, and to show your feelings and emotions. There are some theatrical elements in it, in music, vocals, behavior, especially in Ruki's behavior you can see that (vocalist of The Gazette). I think it can be interesting for opera singer, I think in some point it's connected. :)
I would also love to here your analyse of japanese artist Kokia, she is classically and operatically trained, but it's not her main technique she's using in her music. But in song "Il Mare Dei Suoni" she's using it, I really recommend live performance from History concert tour 2012, such amazing performance. To be honest, Kokia is the best singer I've ever heard and I think you would like her as well. :)

She said “classical adjacent” actually. These people don’t know anything about that.

Part of Tarja's vocal style has a lot of vocal slides.

And of others have mentioned, her thick Finnish accent shapes the pronounciation and dictation. It's not why she and the band parted ways. She was going to quit to pursue a solo career and her husband/manager was being disruptive, so the band preemptively dismissed her (the day after this show). Some fans tried to make it bigger than that but that's the nutshell of the issue.

I would like to hear your thoughts about Tarja singing a classical song, like Mein Herr Marquis or Vilja Lied.
Also, from Woodstock 2016, her cover of Supremacy by Muse.

Thank you for this recommendation and kind sentiments =) and while I know some Italian, I'm more well-versed in the diction and flow of the language than knowing the actual language itself.

TuomAS DECIDED THE BIG VOICE OF tARJA NEEDED TO BE mATCHED BY mETAL. He wanted to start a mood band at first but he had to natch his friends voice in his writing.
