This was FANTASTIC 🔥Such an awesome marriage between rock and operatic vocal techniques, and they go together so well in so many ways! Hi Peter. Learn how to belt healthy? You could ask Floor, she tought Henk Poort (Dutch actor and opera/musical singer) how to sing with a healthy grit too (Floor is/was a voice coach). Henk did a nice job covering 'The sound of silence' in the Disturbed version ( th-cam.com/video/q_BJaM-UrXc/w-d-xo.html ) and Henk and Floor did 'The phantom' too, be it a bit closer to the original ( th-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/w-d-xo.html ). Henk played the phantom for many years in The Netherlands.
This is Tarja Turunen, the original/first lead/femal vocal for Nightwish, Anette Olzon was second and Floor Jansen the third. But I consider this a Marko track, he completely runs away with it in this, his Phantom is so much more than the classical one - he will be missed though I've still haven't give up the hope that he might come back. Other good Marko tracks are The Islander Live in Tampere and their High Hopes cover (Pink Floyd), the latter is Marko only on vocals. All their three female vocals has been Sopranos but they're still very different, Tarja was very classical, Anette was more pop/rock and Floor is somewhere in-between but is a bit of a cameleon and can sing pretty much anything - very useful trait when having a back catalog with songs written for both Tarja (first 5 albums) and Anette (next 2 albums).
I've seen dozens of reactions to this song. Funny how they all start serious and analytical and end up banging their heads with a huge smile on their faces, and can say nothing but "...amazing!"
Just for your statistical record, I'm a 73 year-old guy from northern most Michigan, currently watching around 14 to 16 inches of new snow come down. I just discovered Nightwish a couple months ago, I'm a singer guitar player ballad crooner, who done a ton of 60',70's and 80' music. I LOVE this band. What damned fun!
That must have been amazing. As I watched this reaction, I was thinking to myself that I'll never have a chance to see this performed live ever, so those that saw it were witnesses to an amazing performance. I definitely envy your experience.
Marko is without a doubt the best Phantom. And yes that is Jack Sparrow on the keyboard stand. Tuomas became very influenced by movie scores and composers like Hans Zimmer, who wrote the Pirates score. (Actually they lifted most of that score from his score for Gladiator due to reasons) Hence why he wrote the Ghost Love Score 🙂

I actually *love* the unusual vowel and consonant sounds from Marko in this performance! I think it gives the character of the Phantom a creepier vibe than he would otherwise have. It almost sounds like the words don't want to come out of the character's mouth and have to be forced out through sheer willpower. That's honestly a terrible description of the vibe I get from it, but it's the best I can come up with.
just a small correction, phantom was written by an English composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the original singers were also English, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, so it isn't. as you stated an American song.
@@TheRealRedAce you are correct, i didnt realise that the single was released just before the stage show, still an english singer though (p.s. I loved the Psychomodo album)

Agree 100%. To me, what made Nightwish stand out from the rest was that combination of the symphonic metal and the sound of her voice. Absolutely fantastic. After that, all the others sound too average. Having said that, I totally respect Annette and Floor, they are both very good singers, just nothing special to me.

Yes, when listening to Nightwish the word "epic" always comes up. They are a very epic band. This was the first Nightwish song I ever heard, so it introduced me to what is now my favourite band, along with Rammstein!
Tarja is the original singer of Nightwish. Of the band's 9 albums, the first 5 were recorded with her, the next 2 with Anette, and the last 2 with Floor. A curiosity of this show that you just saw is that Tarja was sick that day. She had a throat infection and was on medication. I'm curious to know what your vocal classification. Are you bass or baritone? Your voice has a beautiful timbre.
Oh my gosh I am so glad you did an analysis on this one. The first time I heard it I was blown away by the entire production of Night Wish doing Phantom of The Opera! Thankful for your unique and professional insight.!

That ending is just INSANE!!! So damn amazing. This is literally my favorite version of this song!
I love your voice - both speaking and singing - and have been enjoying your reaction and analysis videos. In this video you made one small error - you claimed that Phantom was originally done by American theatre, however, it was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and first performed in London, long before it was picked up and began performing on Broadway and finally surpassed the record for longest running show, outlasting Cats - another Andrew Lloyd Webber creation. Keep up what you do!
Now you've done the big reaction standards, Nightwish (Floor/Tarja), Dimash, and Diana Ankudinova. I would suggest checking out Lara Fabian who happens to be a great inspiration for both Dimash and Diana for her emotional connection while singing. Lara Fabian - Je suis malade (From Lara With Love version) is highly suggested I'd say it qualifies as raw, powerful and intense in its emotion if that helps 😁
It is definitely a jack sparrow on the front of Tuomas's keyboard, and if I may i say, they do have some similarity's in their looks to. :-P Tarja was the O.G. Symphonic Metal Queen who brought symphonic metal to the masses, or at least it became more socially acceptable to listen to, i remember we had songs like "Nemo" and " I wish i had an angel" playing on mainstream radio here in Norway when they launched, quite a few female vocalists have been inspired by her career, including a certain Floor.. :-)
Stupendous comments. Congratulations. I am sure you can enjoy, and add to our appreciation, “High Hopes”. The Nightwish version of the original Pink Floyd Classic.
I was delighted when I found out you were doing a R & A of this song! I went searching for more Nightwish music on my streaming service after your first R & A on them, found this one and had to add it. I didn't realize how alike how hard rock and opera are until you talked about it. It makes perfect sense! Thank you!
If you love rock singing, you need to check out the Northern Kings. It's Marco Hietala, Jarkko Ahola, Tony Kakko, and JP Leppäluoto. They do metal covers together and they're glorious. Another thing to check out for metal and opera together is Dark Sarah's Dance with the Dragon. Heidi Parviainen and JP Leppäluoto are the singers. Symphonic metal tango.
Amazing reaction! I had to come back and check out your Nightwish reactions. Love Nightwish. This is absolutely my favorite version of Phantom of the Opera, and your comments were fantastic.
Tuomas he was rocking it for long time he is the mastermind and everyone's favorite member he is the guy who created Nightwish writes and composes 80% of the songs.
Saw Nightwish live (their last tour before they fired Tarja- the same from which this video was taken) in England and they were freaking amazing! Thanks for your input, keep the great work 👍
Would love to see you react to the band Poets of the Fall and their song Carnival of Rust (their most well known song and the music video got voted as the best Finnish music video ever back in 2006 when the song was released). Truly an underrated band from here in Finland. Also a band with many different sounds all the way from slow melodic songs to full on rock. Although if you want to immediately hear a song that showcases how crazy good the lead singer Marko Saaresto's voice can be (and while his vocal range might not be the most dynamic out there he is an amazing example of what you can achieve by having absolutely perfect control of your vocals especially the raw emotion that his voice is able to convey) then i recommend listening to their song Daze. His vocals on the chorus are something out of this world. I just think that so many more people would love their music if they just ever heard them but since their from Finland it rarely happens. Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control (Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it) also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them :D
I'm an instrumentalist mainly, guitar, piano and other stringed instruments but am continually fascinated by the mechanics of vocal expression of all styles, and love your analysis of it. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and perspective!
Tarja, Tuomas and Emppu formed Nightwish 1996 in highschool, they made 5 albums before Tarja departure from the band! ❤️ You should check out Tarjas solo opera album's/song's.
Love the end of an era live show I cried when I got my copy loved it so much and was so sad that it was the end of an era with the band and that I was unable to make it to any of the gigs on the tour, while I appreciate the singers who came after I have such an emotional attachment to the first era of nightwish
Great analysis, thank you! I knew about the difference between operatic and musical theatre styles, but hadn't thought about the similarities between opera and rock before, but it made sense - I knew about Rob Halford's admiration for Pavarotti (and, if some articles are to be believed, vice versa) but just hadn't made the connection. If you want to try Annette, don't go for the same type of song - her strengths are different. If you prefer live performances, I'd recommend Slow Love Slow from Montreux Jazz Festival 2012 or Scaretale Official Live. She also shines on any of the Imaginaerum studio tracks (less so Dark Passion Play in my opinion, where Tuomas was learning to write for a voice other than Tarja's and hadn't quite got there yet). One quibble - The Phantom of the Opera is English rather than American. But I know what you mean about the vowels, anyway!
Tarja was the first singer. Anette is 2nd and Floor 3rd. FYI Nightwish is Floor's 3rd band. You should check out Tarja's solo stuff and some of her classical songs. Tarja has studied classical music most of her life. You should react to Floor and Henk singing Phantom. Nicole Scherzinger singing a song from the Phantom. Marko has a video of singing a duet All I Ask of You . You should react to Tarja singing Supremacy from Muse.
Oh yeah you should check out hair metal Marko from the early days of his own band Tarot. There is a TV performance of their song Wings Of Darkness from back in 1986 I think 😁
Hey Peter, awesome reaction!! You just HAVE to listen to Marko sing the Pink Floyd cover "High Hopes." It's from the same concert (End of an Era). His voice also truly shines in that too. Liked and subscribed.
Tarja was their first singer and sang in a mostly operatic style. Annette was their second singer and was more of a pop singer with no classical training. When Nightwish fired Tarja they wanted a complete break with their previous style and so went with in a completely different direction. Yes it is a Jack Sparrow doll. Tuomas, the keyboardist and main composer of Nightwish, looks a lot like him and I think someone sent it to him, he loved it and placed it on the keyboard stand. You also should checkout Floor and Henk Poort's version of teh Phantom from Beste Zangers . They use the Nightwish arrangement and Floor absolutely kills it. Henk was the original Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical. For Floor singing some more operatic style vocals, Stargazers live from Buenos Aries and one of their masterpieces, Poet and the Pendulum. The last one is long and deeply emotional for Nightwish fans so recommend a little research into it's background if you do it. Last there is an older video of Floor singing O Mio Babbino Caro on a Dutch TV Show that is quite lovely. th-cam.com/video/UeTyAZtV5wI/w-d-xo.html
Found your channel today and liked the reactions because like some other opera singers you also explain a lot what makes it more interesting to me that just listening to it like "yea, nice...great...cool".. Did you already see "The greatest show on earth" by Nightwish? As an opera singer who also tells some kind of story you could like it.
I wish you had been around for the last two or three years. Most of the coaches who have reviewed this don’t seem to understand what Tarja is doing, probably because most of them are contemporary-based. But even the opera based people don’t want to go into it, because they don’t want to alienate the people who don’t seem to like TARJA.
Tarja will always be the mother of nightwish. There are songs I love her way and others I’ve loved floors way. It’s like comparing apples and oranges and I hate when people do. They are both top notch just diff. Floors not trying to be tarja and tarja is an opera singer. Diff but great.
On a similar vein, symphonic metal band 'Dark Sarah' have a Bass Singer, JP Leppaluoto, singing operatic duets with female lead singer, Heidi Parviainen, in a similar style to this. Check out 'Dance with the Dragon' as a good example of their style.
It's just chaos at the end & I love it every time. Marko is rock honestly. He's been doing it almost longer than I've been alive. His band Tarot kinda paved the way for the bands not in England or America to get in on that sweet 80s hair metal. What's their song.... wings of destruction iirc - it's history Lol imagine trying to do the chandelier at a gig? Could be dangerous! IMHO Amaranth showcases Annette best. It's a great song
When doing a critical review of Tarja's voice, it's always helpful to remember: a) she is Finnish, which informs many of the vowel choices and positions and b) her opera training was in the German tradition, which (so I have heard) offers a somewhat different twist on phonation, etc .... sorry about the 'etc'... I am just parroting something I heard over on TCV. I am decidedly NOT a Voical Nerd.
Huge fan of Phantom of the Opera. I think Nightwish does a phenomenal job on this song.Tarja is fantastic and nailed the E6. Marco is a bit sinister, as the Phantom (Eric) likely is written. Not to be picky, but that song was originally done by two Brits(Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman). I was in London in September and saw it at Her Majesty's Theatre. We were standing outside, waiting to enter, and someone asked me if this was my first time to see this opera live. I told them, yes, but it wasn't an opera, it was a musical that takes place in an opera house. They told me I didn't know what I was talking about, stuck their nose up and walked off. Oh, well, I still had a great time.

Tarja is the One and only greetings from Finland 🇫🇮😷❤
Great reaction dude! Keep going with the NW..... Really enjoyable and different to the usual reactions!
Best wishes from Namibia
Tuomas, keyboards, behind all Nightwish music, our metal Mozart 🤘💕
Watching people on the internet fall in love with Marko is one of my favourite pastimes. 😛
Lovely reaction and analysis Peter! Thank you 🌷
Stupendous comments. Congratulations.
I am sure you can enjoy, and add to our appreciation, “High Hopes”. The Nightwish version of the original Pink Floyd Classic.
Fantastic analysis, Marko can really get up there he has a wonderful and expressive voice. -
Marko is the best! I am really sad that he left Nightwish.
I’ve gotten to meet Marko and he’s so nice
Imagine watching Phantom on Broadway, but with Nightwish in the Orchestra Pit? Would be insane 😍
She did great on this song!💯
Not to forget the group “Tarot”. There is rock…. And Marco’s voice….. Puh….. Love from Sweden 🇸🇪
Not my favourite!!
Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control
(Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it)
also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs
sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them :D
You need to react to their Pink Floyd cover "High Hopes", really, Marco's voice will blow you away.....haunting long notes....
Your reaction and analysis is awesome! Yay!
I'm an instrumentalist mainly, guitar, piano and other stringed instruments but am continually fascinated by the mechanics of vocal expression of all styles, and love your analysis of it. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and perspective!
Wow, just you talking voice sounds amazing Mr. Barber. ❤️❤️❤️
Watched many of your videos and I wanna hear you sing...feel like your voice is absolutely beautiful
awesome reaction.... pretty much the same as I felt after listening. Best cover of this, they made it their own.
I love your voice and how explain your way of speaking is very particular kisses from Argentina Buenos Aires 🇦🇷🤘 Aguante Nightwish!!!
My favourite Nightwish performance.
I wish to watch you doing more reactions from them, your insights are always so interesting, plus I just enjoy listening to your voice lol
What a voice You have!!! GREAT REACTION!
Peter, You are getting quite the rep around the music reactor community. I am starting to hear Peter Barber said on several reactions.
Tarja, Tuomas and Emppu formed Nightwish 1996 in highschool, they made 5 albums before Tarja departure from the band! ❤️ You should check out Tarjas solo opera album's/song's.
Agree! Tarja solo career is amazing and sooo underrated
the voice of this TH-camr is very beautiful. Tarja Perfect
Love the end of an era live show I cried when I got my copy loved it so much and was so sad that it was the end of an era with the band and that I was unable to make it to any of the gigs on the tour, while I appreciate the singers who came after I have such an emotional attachment to the first era of nightwish
Waiting for that Rock/Belting Peter😁
Superior review. Just excellent.
The crying girls in the front row always makes me smile!
Haha, i've watched this so many times, never noticed the jack sparrow doll! xD
Love to see you react to either Storytime or Romanticide by Nightwish live at Wacken 2013 😁 will knock your socks off.
Couldn't agree more, everything is better when it is metalized
Tarja was the first singer. Anette is 2nd and Floor 3rd. FYI Nightwish is Floor's 3rd band. You should check out Tarja's solo stuff and some of her classical songs. Tarja has studied classical music most of her life. You should react to Floor and Henk singing Phantom. Nicole Scherzinger singing a song from the Phantom. Marko has a video of singing a duet All I Ask of You . You should react to Tarja singing Supremacy from Muse.
I would recommend checking out Nightwish cover of High Hopes from this same concert to hear more singing by Marko.
Big thank u!!!
Great reaction!! 👌😊 Love your voice ❤️ Saludos desde México 🇲🇽
Fun to watch and very educational. Many thanks for the detail. The vocal pairing you need to hear is Floor and Marco. It'll blow you away.
If you enjoyed Marlo’s voice check out “While Your Lips are Still Red” from Wembly 2015 or The Islander” from Tampere 2015
Subscribed to hopefully get to see more Nightwish reactions! :) Great reaction :)
I'm here now and always happy to nerd out about vocal technique 🤓
Tarja will always be the mother of nightwish. There are songs I love her way and others I’ve loved floors way. It’s like comparing apples and oranges and I hate when people do. They are both top notch just diff. Floors not trying to be tarja and tarja is an opera singer. Diff but great.
Great reaction and analysis !! Keep up the good work.
Yes Peter it is a doll of Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. I went back and watched the full original video. You have a good eye.
Best analys of this song, and i have see them all. Tarja was first singer, and best.
On a similar vein, symphonic metal band 'Dark Sarah' have a Bass Singer, JP Leppaluoto, singing operatic duets with female lead singer, Heidi Parviainen, in a similar style to this. Check out 'Dance with the Dragon' as a good example of their style.
Great reaction❤ Ilove how usually reactors come to listen to Tarja or Floor and end up fangirling over Marco 😂🤗
Best reaction ever
i did read somewhere that tarja is classically trained but was a chamber music singer rather than opera ...
It's just chaos at the end & I love it every time. Marko is rock honestly. He's been doing it almost longer than I've been alive. His band Tarot kinda paved the way for the bands not in England or America to get in on that sweet 80s hair metal. What's their song.... wings of destruction iirc - it's history
Lol imagine trying to do the chandelier at a gig? Could be dangerous!
IMHO Amaranth showcases Annette best. It's a great song
Your voice😮😮😮🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍 wow Tarja sing this aria like a Queen. Is the Queen
Marko, Marko, Marko. ❤
Your vocalizations make me wish this aria was written for bass and baritone, lol! \m/
When doing a critical review of Tarja's voice, it's always helpful to remember:
a) she is Finnish, which informs many of the vowel choices and positions
and
b) her opera training was in the German tradition, which (so I have heard) offers a somewhat different twist on phonation, etc
.... sorry about the 'etc'... I am just parroting something I heard over on TCV.
I am decidedly NOT a Voical Nerd.
"Voical" 😅 Is that a cross between "voice" and "vocal"?!? What kind of nerd does that make you 😉 Good points you've made, though.
@@MisterHowzat ? A nerd who cannot spell properly ?
