  • Mitchell guides us through the installation of AM Solar’s first 24V Dual Victron Energy 3000VA Multiplus II Inverter/Charger system for a 2023 Grand Design Reflection. He explains some of the benefits of this robust off-grid power system, which includes the potential to run multiple high energy use appliances at the same time. This Grand Design 5th Wheel power system will be perfect for boondocking.
    Key solar system features include a 24V 600Ah Victron Energy (VE) Lithium Battery Bank w/ VE Lynx Smart Battery Management System (BMS) and VE Lynx Distributor, a Dual 24V 3000VA VE Multiplus II Inverters w/ an AMS Cerbo Touch 70 kit, and a 1400W solar system featuring a 100A VE MPPT Smart Charge Controller and Rich Solar 200W solar panels.
    AM Solar was founded in 2002 and has performed thousands of RV solar installations. We offer several products, including RV solar panels, battery banks, solar charge controllers, solar roof combiner boxes, mounting hardware, and more. We are industry experts when it comes to installing solar on your rig.

    I have the exact same year and model RV. I know this model came with a single solar panel, charge controller and inverter prep. I would be interested in seeing how you ran the second 120v leg to the RV circuit breaker box and where you connected it. I know that second leg powers both AC units as well as the fireplace. I'm retired now but I installed many grid tied home solar systems and also built various solar powered battery back up units for various needs before lithium batteries became more affordable.

    Are you not worried about the neutral overloading? 30A shore power + 6kVA of powerassist (~40A @ 120V) would push 35A through L1 and L2 which would result in 70A on the neutral.

      This is a valid concern and does point to some of the shortcomings with the current state of the art in RV electrical architecture. When we get a project like this, we assess if the client has loads in their RV where, through negligence, they could overload the neutral. If so, we recommend a split-phase configuration, where L1 would cancel out L2, and a balanced panel would mitigate the risk. If full output power assist on a 30A shore connection isn’t going to happen, we use a parallel configuration. This shared high current on the neutral in a 2x120V configuration isn’t ideal, and we anticipate as more and more loads are added onto RVs the factory balance of systems will get more duty-rated, but for this specific project, when consulting the NEC and ampacity tables, we felt that we were in the tolerance range of the cable used in this project, based on the end user's use case.

    Any wiring diagrams you can show to explain how you wired up the AC side into the inverters? That's where I am lost at. Hard to get any information on how to wire up dual inverters in parallel.

      Also can you post a link for what you used for the AC side? I'm liking what I'm seeing here. If you were just installing dual multiplus/quattros (AC, ground, neutral), couldn't you use the same setup, but only put one hot to each inverter and then combine them on the output connection which re-joins them to go to the breaker box?

      mortons on the move have a great explaination of one inverter and transfer switch for shore. best way to do it but i would use a autotransformer too

    you are better running one inverter then connecting it to a autotransforer to 240v. more control when you connect to different sources. Also a manual transfer switch for 50amp shore dont need inverter for that. nice setup but lots of flaws.

      That is definitely our preference too, and we have done several of those, but it really just depends on the particular customer's requirements and lifestyle.

    So you split the AC 2x120 out to each inverter and then combine the outputs to run to ac panel? Will shore power pass through at the full 12kw?

    • @GarretTowneAMS
      @GarretTowneAMS  ปีที่แล้ว

      The inverters are run in parallel, you can't get 240V AC, unless you plug into 50A shore power. The outputs are combined at the AC panel. You do get the full 50A x 2 legs x 120V when you connect to a 50A shore source. Does this answer your questions? If not, I’m happy to go deeper.
