4T65E, No Forward

  • In this video, i talk about the most common problem with the 4T65E Transmission, that is no forward due to a broken 1-2 band. I also go through what i do to prevent this problem from happening. Another not so common issue is the actuator feed limit valve getting stuck in it's bore, i go over that as well. Thanks and enjoy

Hey Gary!! I'm the guy that sent you an email about installing my reverse band on my4t65e. I was able to get the band retaining bolt back in, and my "partial rebuild" was a success. I installed 3 new raybestos bands in the transmission because I heard from you and others that they tend to break. It took 11 quarts of dexos vi, and I installed a rare earth magnet In the pan next to the factory magnet.
I can feel a difference when the van switches gears in that the grab is a little more sudden with all new clutch plates, and more aggressive. Before it was a little slippy, but in the 17 years of us owning the van, we must have slowly gotten use to it. Thanks for your reply and your videos!! After seeing the inside of a 4t65e for the first time, I think they are well engineered.

So with your help via the videos you post I rebuilt a 4T65E-HD. It's now has 28k since the rebuild with no issues.
I now have a problem when transmission is hot, starting from a stop it kinda pops into first but not a hard pop. However when you accelerate you can feel a little slippage in 1st gear.
I did install the sonnax extended length forward band servo pin kit and the sonnax tcc relief valve during rebuild.
No transmission codes when I checked, and only when hot

Thanks for the info Gary! My 2008 Chevy Uplander just did this last week . Initially no Drive and 3,but 1 and 2 still work so I tried to drive it home about 5 miles or so at a traffic light the 1rst and second gear also went out, but reverse still works. So I reversed to a safe location by the road and called a towing company . I am now trying to decide whether to get the transmission fixed by a mechanic since the car still drives fine and has no other problems or junk it since it might cause me more than it's value. Thanks again for the info.

Hello, I remember writing to you not to ling ago about losing first gear in an 08 chevy impala. I stated that there were no codes present. No codes ever popped up. I saw it was low of fluid and added a quart plus some trans seafoam. Tonight I drove it around manually. Upon waiting I heard a knock that was felt in the steering wheel. Well I now have first gear back. Hell it even downshifts on it's own. Now that first gear works. It shifts from first to second and now hangs up in second and gets into 3rd. The car will take off in drive. While it's in drive and shifts to 3rd the rpms go up and then it pops outta gear. I have never experienced anything like this. Its is so bizarre and wondered if you have ever in your career heard of anything as wild as this. What is happening with this unit?

Hi, i have a 2006 Buick Lucern 3.8 V6 that is giving me fits. I purchased it as a "run and driving" car from the auction to give to my stepdaughter. Car has a 120k ez miles on it, starts right up reverse and drives fine. in fwd and reverse, you can feel the gears change ect. Once warm however the trans feels like it is slipping and that gets worse and worse til you are stopped with no motion. Any ideas? does this car have a TCM? i can't find one...

I’ve got an 07 Grand Prix GT- left work last night, reversed, shifted to drive and accelerated. Heard a pop of sorts and then drive and third wouldn’t work.
I have reverse, 1,2, and if I get to about 30 in 2, I can manually shift to 3 and D, and feel it catch.

Yesterday she called me stranded and I drive the car home for her and it was doing exactly as this person described theirs. If you shift manually you can get her going and strong in reverse. I thought it must be a rule that car TH-cam videos had to start with "Hey, guys, what's happening?" Thank you for not, first clue someone smart was doing this video.
I think, repeat, think that the broken band is no forward in D or 3 but 1 and 2 work. And reverse, of course. I think you imply that below in the comments. That's the situation right now in my 2000 Regal GS and I derive my conclusion from the official GM shop manual. When I drive in 1 or 2, there are also some "bangs," hard moments as it tries to make nice, up and down shifts. Attempts at getting the right line pressure with the messed up band servo?
What's weird is that for several months I've been monitoring and analyzing some noises. A bearing like noise in D, drops when in N. Drove fine, no increase in noise with increase in RPM. But the bugger was an intermittent bad noise in reverse, almost "clanking". Now with the presumed front band bad, no noise. Or, maybe it's just in a behaving good boy phase.
As this car has 187,000 miles on it, the previous and only owner obviously never changed the fluid (I did not long after buying in May) I'm thinking of just doing a factory rebuild swap like from Rock Auto. Dyno tested, 3 year parts and labor warranty. I lean this way also because my extended family history of shop rebuilds on 3 vehicles is 0-3 success rate. Obviously, this reflects poorly on the likes of you, but that's where I'm at.
I grew up in Huntington. Have a good holiday, sir!

Hello, I have a 2008 chevy Impala 3.9 about 94,000 miles. Winter is here in NY. I jumped my car, battery died. Drove to the store trans worked great. A couple days later dues to having kids. I swapped the dead battery to a new one. I go to take my impala to the store and it acts like the E-brake is on. I get it on the highway. It takes forever to accelerate with one shift into overdrive. I shifted the car to 1st, it took off in second, moved the shifter to 3rd then to drive and it performed normal once moving. I tried to downshift into 1st going slow of course, does not go into first gear. Did me changing a dead battery really do this to my transmission?

@@GaryFerraro Wow Thank You so much for replying this fast. I live upstate in Johnstown NY. So going over the problems. Reverse works as it always has, no issue there. Even from drive to reverse its fast and functional. When shifting to Drive/Overdrive that's when the car is struggling. Rpm range hangs in the 2,500 to 3,000 range while putting a lot of effort getting up to 30 to 35 mph, when you hit this speed you can hear that the engine is fully locked with the gear in the transmission and the power brings the car up to speed as it should. Now, if I start out in Drive/Overdrive and accelerate it's that struggle. When I took my foot of the petal and dropped the shifter down to 2nd, The trans did shift right to second, you could hear and feel it, pushing back on the petal and the car will accelerate faster the being in drive. I should state that while I placed the shifter in 2nd, as the speed increased and rpm range I manually shifted the car into 3rd to which it then shifted as it should, from there up to 4th etc and it runs as if there is no issue. I did start the car in the 1st gear setting, it took off in second. If I accelerate in 2nd and move the shifter to Drive, not only will it slow my acceleration but also the rpms drop and vibration can be felt. While down shifting with the shifter, my foot was off the accelerator on an open road. As the car slowed I down shifted in a safe rpm range to not make the car jerk forward because of the speed. It dropped to 3rd, 2nd yet will not acknowledge that 1st gear is there. This just happens after changing the battery. Never had an issue prior. I truly am both frustrated and baffled.
