Best part of this story is that her and Porter Wagner, whom she wrote this song for, had a falling out afterward and he was pretty terrible to her. Years later he was in major financial trouble and the IRS seized all his property, including his entire song catalogue. Dolly went to the IRS auction and purchased the entire catalogue, then gave it back to him for free. Shows that she truly meant every word of this song!

She wrote this for Porter Wagoner. She didn't know how to tell him she was leaving the show, so instead, she sang it to him in his office. Throughout the years, he sued her, to which she just responded by giving him a million dollars and continued to care for him. He blew all the money by partying, and tried to sue her again for a catalogue of music she owned. Instead of getting mad and fighting it, Dolly just said, "You can have it all for free". She took care of that man for decades, despite how awful he was to her, and she even went to his death bed and sang to him, holding his hand and keeping him company. This is the essence of unconditional love and the story of her great character. When she said, "I Will Always Love You", she meant it. No matter what he did, no matter how much he failed, she continued to love him until his dying day. Dolly Parton is an incredibly wonderful person.

In my opinion, Witney sings this song with passion and power, wich is great because shows her vocals strenght, and thus makes the song more remarkable, but on the other hand, Dolly sings with such tenderness that made the lyrics go much deeper. I love both versions equally - they're both interpreted in such different ways they feel like two different songs. Whitney's version is almost a bold proclamation with confidence while Dolly's feels more personal and vulnerable - like someone broken. How amazing that we have two amazing versions by two incredible women to represent different emotions depending on where we all are at a specific time in our lives. We should just be grateful rather than bitch about whose is better.

I Always preferred this one to Whitneys. She made 50 million with this song - thanks to everybody who has covered it. She wrote it in one evening together with Jolene. It just poured out. Now - that's talent.

To those who gave it a thumbs down must remember that without Dolly writing this song Whitney would never had the chance to sing it.... just saying... both have their own styles and do a great job of singing it.... however Dolly that was fantastic

the power is IN her subtlety.....dolly can belt it out, and her range is awesome, but its not about how loud one can sign....I love Whitney's version, not doubt about her power...., but I love Dolly's more...classic......

Absolutely right. And unfortunately, there's not much subtlety and nuance in music anymore. I blame those awful American Idol shows for making young people believe that you're not singing unless you're screaming. THIS is true singing, putting your heart and soul into a song. Dolly is a master at that. Thank God we have artists like her. I think Kacey Musgraves is also an artist in this same style.

it's like having a highlighter. What's the whole point in highlighting the whole paper. Just use it where it has meaning.

Heard about the origin of this song in the strangest place - "Drunk History"! But it's a beautiful composition and performance. From everything that I've heard about her, Dolly sounds like a truly wonderful person.

If you want to hear a different dolly version, she partially redid this song for the 80s movie 'the best little whorehouse in texas' starring her and burt reynolds

Whitney Houstons version is powerful and lovely in its own way, But Dolly Partons evokes a deep longing and melts my heart.

This is Dolly's lasting gift to the world: a song that will be cherished forever as long as we love deeply and hold love in our hearts regardless.
