  • Guitar Virtuoso Don Alder gets the crowd to rethink the possibilities of the Acoustic Guitar
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Believe it or not but Don used to come to an open mic jam in Vancouver "every Tuesday" around 16 years ago and we would all play a few songs. He was already in full beast mode as a guitarist. The name of the restaurant was Malarky. Great memories and a few very talented people stand out when I think of that time, Mr. Alder is one of them. Don was humble and very supportive.

    Just saw this tonight, but the guitar is definitely a Dyer Harp guitar made famous in the sadly short life of Michael Hedges. Michael experimented with a bunch of pickup configurations that brought out the bass strings more or less. Sometimes the bass string act as "drone" strings which vibrate sympathetically as a sitar does. Michael tried both approaches, but this person does a great job as well.

    • @DA-ti6pc
      @DA-ti6pc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly, in fact it wasnt really a performance they had me play to welcome people coming in off the break, so there was tons of noise, also sound check we had problems with the harp guitar so the performance was pretty bad. I do have lots of good videos on youtube that i hope people go seek out. My job on the particular wasnt to be about breaking new barriers and redefining, just to play welcoming music. I did ask for the title to be changed.

      What, because it doesn't have lyrics or doesnt follow a simple verse/chorus/verse structure? Like thats perfectly fine if thats what you like, but that first one especially was very musical, lots of changes in dynamics and a really intricate melody. I wasnt a fan of the second one, but Im sure a lot of other people found that to be very musical to their ears.

    • @matthias18gr
      @matthias18gr 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Simon music is in the eye of the beholder . me , as a professional guitar teacher with a trained ear , just said my opinion . it doesnt mean that everyone must agree with it

    • @TheChimneySwifts
      @TheChimneySwifts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to slightly agree. The second song has some nice resolutions, but for the most part these songs just have so many suspended chords that I just feel like I'm floating around without anything really interesting going on dynamically or melodically. Great skill, but kind of leaving me underwhelmed.

  • @Hue_Nery
    @Hue_Nery 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First thought is that the bass strings need a peizo pickup because they are really hard to hear. Yeah, it's sloppy but it's musical. He recovered from his mistakes pretty well. I usually give a visual sign that I did something stupid. Sign of an amateur. Andy McKee, Don Ross and of course Tommy Emanuel have been doing this for years. Now there are innovators like Pino Forestiere and many others. Don Ross pioneered a lot of this style but he's far more musical. Don Ross doesn't seem to be bound by the key of the open tuning either, which is very cool.

    • @DanielleMuscato
      @DanielleMuscato 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hueseph The bass strings do have their own pickup; otherwise you wouldn't be able to hear them at all - the magnetic pickup for the normal strings only pickups up what's directly over it. See the two output jacks at the endpin, each with its own cable coming out? One goes to a channel tailored for bass frequencies and the other goes to a channel tailored for guitar frequencies.

    • @Hue_Nery
      @Hue_Nery 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Danielle Muscato Seriously now? Please. No need to condescend. I see the plugs. I've been recording music, playing guitar and repairing electronics in guitars for over 20 years now. It looks to me that he has a transducer in the soundhole near the pickup. I transducer underneath the bass saddle would make more sense to me. Magnetic pickups will pick up residual noise from the bass strings.

    • @DanielleMuscato
      @DanielleMuscato 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not trying to be condescending of course; your comment made it sound like you thought the bass strings weren't being amplified, and I was simply pointing out that indeed, they are. It's kind of strange that you jumped to that conclusion though. Actually though, you've got your second commend backwards. Magnetic pickups, especially with individual pole pieces, will always isolate better than a saddle transducer, which picks up any vibration on the whole saddle and also secondary vibrations from the soundboard at large, regardless of which string those vibrations are coming from, or even if they are coming from another set of strings mounted on the same soundboard elsewhere (as is the case with a harp guitar).

  • @Lewis---
    @Lewis--- 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    it's a shame because this could be a decent idea, but the low strings are so quiet compared to the main 6 that they aren't adding anything. you don't even notice them unless you're specifically trying to listen for them.

      I think it might be what's known as a "Sympitar" but I can't tell without seeing how it was constructed. All the snide remarks (not that you made one, but to comment on them) are amusing. It's funny to see those without talent try to take something from someone with talent. No, it really is funny. The anonymity of the Internet makes 'em behave like silly children who would ruin someone's snowman because it was built better then their snowman and then whine when they got a bloody nose because of having done so. It really is cute, there's surely a psychiatric journal's paper or two in there somewhere. At any rate, I think it's a Sympitar - see Wikipedia's entry and some Google pictures.
