Marina Alexandra has established herself as a dynamic performer with a powerful stage presence. Finger Style Guitar Magazine described her as an “amazing player that commands the guitar with world-class technique and musicianship that is uncommon.”
She has received awards in several guitar competitions including the Music Teachers National Association State and Regional Competitions and semifinalist in the 6th annual Edwin H. and Leigh W. Schadt National String Competition for classical guitar.
I play Electric Guitar and I play Acoustic Guitar. I know skill when I see it. She's good. Guys, this isn't meant to sound like pop music! Don't expect it to sound like it.

There are two things I really dislike about this video and what she i saying/playing:
1. Us classical guitar players (or any musician for that matter) shouldnt have to include crazy techniques in a song to make it entairtaining for poeple who dont share the same passion, love and feelings for classical music.
2. In my opinon, the first song didnt even sound like music, it really did seem like all she was doing was showcasing different "cool" teachniques on the guitar. It was like playing the guitar for the plucking of the strings, rather then plucking them for the sounds they produce.

On ne devrait pas toujours réagir en absolu , mais apprendre soi-même respecter son public en fonction de ses difficultés et tres vite , les barrières sont rompues , testez si le coeur vous en dit , c'est magique !

WOW, these comments below are quite moronic. Seems like not a lot of ppl (and bunch of dilettants) understand the point.
The piece she plays by Koshkin is quite exceptional from the Classic Guitar world. It explores different effects that can be achieved with Classical Guitar. And there is story behind it as well, which is another point of the melody. Composition itself is very chaotic (broken rhythmical structure) and atonal which makes it beautiful in its own special way!

Even though she had a ruff spot at 7:40, I hope people understand that out of five thousand notes right she only got four wrong. That's an A in any other subject.
Marina has wonderful tone, phrasing and excellent technique. Performing for such a large audience and knowing that hundred of thousands (or possibly millions) more will see this video demonstrates her professionalism and poise under great stress.
signoguns "Size of the audience is irrelevant?" As a "modern artist" myself, size of audience and venue completely has an influence on performance. It is completely relevant. Conversely, historical artists also played the same music "every night."
Look at her hand position... her technique is good (not perfect, but still excellent - you can see the stress/tension). Are you trying to say her musicality is "stilted and dull?" I always judge a performance by situation. If you're trying to compare it to a CD, then you have no idea what goes into a recording.
When I've record Grammy winning artists, it takes about 2-4 hours to get 1 minute of music, plus another 2-4 hours of editing after that. Only the 1% of 1% of the very best can record a live performance without "error." And I say "error" since there is always something that could have been done better: phrasing, clarity, articulation....
signoguns No problem. I think whenever I write something, it comes off abrasive and rude - even if it's not supposed to be. I think I lack charisma with the written word. So, I apologize for that. It's not the best performance I've seen (and on some concerts, I've performed Sunburst better than this one), but I'm sure her consistency way beyond my ability. If there was any defensiveness in my post, it was to counteract all the other negative comments on her playing.
Those were some consciouss responses! For me, it was good Besides the kind of tunes she played (which are not of my prefference) classical fingerstyle is a not a simple technique, it requires some practice and discipline to master it. And that's the reason why I clicked on this video. I'm also a guitar player and surely it was an amazing experience to her, to be heard by a big crowd. At least, I would be pretty scared :P

Sean Emmett Her hand shifted to a wrong position on the neck (wrong fret) at one point, which caused the "wrong notes." It happens. If you look at her face, she didn't show it emotionally. That's professionalism.
She could have made mistakes the entire time or played the piece flawlessly and nobody would ever know the difference.

Thankyou so much. Two things were very well demonstrated; 1) that classical guitar can go beyond music and create an imaginative landscape if the listener is willing to close their eyes and 'feel' the scene (what is happening? Who is saying/doing what in this scene?) and 2) that classical instruments are always relevant in the modern world. Having recently returned from sound and body movement workshops, I found Toy Soldiers fascinating as a pure sound piece. Experimental music/sound seems to demand more from the listener, I find, because it asks us to arrive at the 'scene' and be more involved, rather than being handed something beautiful, that fits a regular 'shape' and formula, to appreciate and admire. Interesting!

Really interesting compositions. The first one unique the second stunning.
She really is very good... It's sad to see that people are insulting her. However, I think this would have been received better if she had changed the order of the pieces that she played. The second piece was expressive and melodic, like I would expect from the classical guitar. That one should have been first. The other piece (with the drum sound effects) is interesting, but maybe this wasn't the right context for it. Or, at least if it had been played second, the first one would have given a better introduction to the guitar's natural sound. I play the classical guitar (not professionally, just as a hobby) and I'm glad that people like her are trying to introduce it to the world.
She definately isin't the good person to show the bests feels of classical guitar. She is not playing with her soul even though she is a decent player.

I actually don't see any insults. I see very reasonable feedback about the quality of the talk. It was not about the strange pieces, it was about her presentation, that was boring and mundane. I mean, before playing the toy soldier's piece she decided it would be somehow interesting to talk about the plot of some story for children.
All of this sounded like a very boring music theory class. She is clearly a very skilled player and not a very skilled presented.

The first piece is unique and strange. Some would find this piece bad or so. If it is listened the way mainstream pieces are listened, then it can be annoying to ears. But I find this interesting and quite entertaining. Because it tells a story and is meant to break limitation of classical guitar.
The second piece is normal, not like the first. It is a nice and simple piece. And she plays them both well.
I personally don't like the first piece, but I think you're right. One would probably enjoy the song more if they listened to the first piece like one would listen to classical music

Music is my place to rest. The performer gives me the gift of not thinking about the things that troubles me. While writing this, my troubles do: broken car, unhappy wife, children struggling, money being short, my performance not good enough.. I could go on!
But listening to music gives me peace of mind!

1:47 I have a classical and am no stranger to it, but I can't get that effect she's doing with just one finger. I have to use two fingers to pinch the strings together and raise them off of the fretboard. If I only pinch them together it just sounds like I'm playing both strings together at the same time but very slightly bent.
Also, I can't imagine anyone would say the classical guitar is boring but the acoustic isn't. They're essentially the same instrument except the classical uses nylon strings while the acoustic uses steel strings. So the acoustic is a bit louder and more twangy but I think most people would say that a classical guitar produces a prettier sound than an acoustic.

If people like this and this kind of I guess out of the ordinary guitar playing, I advise you to look at the youtube channel called Candyrat Records. It's full of all kinds of guitarists leaning towards fingerstyle mostly I guess. It's a must-watch for people who think acoustic guitar playing is just boring and playing 4 chords in repetition ;). And there's a lot more stuff you can find there too since Candyrat supports any music they classify as excellent!

Agreed. I discovered Candyrat records about 10 years ago and since then they've gotten a ton of great new (and old) guitarists under their umbrella.

Now... I can criticize her playing because she's performing to the Internet. If I was at her level of playing, I would not have performed because if be EMBARRASSED to perform so poorly. Music has to move you. And she fails to do so due to her lack of technical skills.
I think it was pretty good. Yes the first song will not give you goosebumps but I don't think that was why it was written. I'm sure when she thought to add that to her presentation she knew there would be some critique coming her way but then again that is always the cause when you do something "different".
It was simply presented to broaden people's perception of what could be done with a classical guitar. I'm sure in a few years time, someone will write a very impressive piece and incorporate some of those sounds produced.

Marina is a skilled guitarist. I don't understand most of the criticisms of her. I can only conclude that those people have never played guitar and really don't understand the level of virtuosity she demonstrates. She is really good.

Don't be so disingenuous. The first piece was avant garde and almost by definition unlikely to be popular. I play guitar myself and love guitar music but while I can recognize skill and technique I'd be lying if I said it gave me pleasure.

Beautiful playing and technique. An interesting presentation that will certainly go over some heads. Like anyone too hung up on disproving a video title to enjoy the beauty haha. Very interesting and fun, I wish the mic was a couple inches closer to the guitar!
I think for anyone to appreciate this you need to go listen to asturias and malaguena and realize she is trying to show off its diversity.

Deer Low I have lot of classical guitar music on CD and I have to admit that only a few of the pieces in these CDs are really worth listening to. I love the guitar. What she played at the beginning was exactly what I run away from. I lean particularly to the Spanish/Latin sound. Western music for the guitar may have its unique sound. I simply don't relate to it.

What she was playing is not "Western music for the guitar". Flamenco is western, arrangements of any of the great piano sonatas are western, and they are not boring like the shit she was playing.

I thought this was pretty interesting! The first piece would be a little odd without an explanation beforehand (or after) but I'm of the opinion that all classical/art music have some back story given. The second piece was definitely more enjoyable, not exactly the easiest either.

I'm surprised on the backlash on this. I mean, the argument that "Toy Soldiers" is not a good audience piece is valid, though oftentimes what a musician finds "exciting" is not an audience piece, but I'm surprised on how many classical guitarists or enthusiasts are close-minded to anything that is not dripping in honey, especially since there are many, varied pieces that utilize nonstandard timbres. One that comes to mind is another Koshkin "Usher Waltz." There are plenty of piano pieces that aren't "easy to listen to," which utilize varying tonal clusters, etc in order to create more of a percussive or timbre effect, so why not include an instrument that you can directly create those effects such as the (classical) guitar? Why not utilize the instrument to the fullest and be more avant-garde? I guess that I am glad that my teacher introduced me to the wide range of pieces available.

I think both pieces perfectly capture their subject, which makes them interesting to listen to. They both tell a story. Maybe I'm biased because I really like contemporary music, but I think these are two very interesting pieces played by an expert guitarist.

None of those pieces were classical though. From around 1300-1900 are the classical periods. renaissance, baroque, classic and romantic. I was very exited that she might play some cool classical pieces.

Scott Bakula Yeah no it isn't. They have no soul and are obsessed with technique but have no passion or originality. As a group, from what I've seen, no swing, no groove, no allure, no pain ever comes through. It's a style which is almost inevitable when not having any particular vision or message, but also playing the guitar obsessively all of the time. It's played by people who are unadventurous and predictable as listeners, but doggedly driven in terms of practicing. I don't know what you think is "phony" about that. really, I don't think you actually think it's phone either, but for whatever reason you wanted to undercut what I said.
Besides all that it's just the whitest guitar playing style in the entire world. and pretty much everybody doing it sounds like an uninspired version of Steve Howe or Leo Kottke. Or a combination of the two.

Which "teenage indie guitarists" have you interviewed on this subject again? I've never heard a single "indie guitarist" make "excuses" for being "underpracticed" from any band, in my life, it sounds like you're haphazardly applying cliches that you read in some out-of-touch magazine article on "indie rock" in 1996. That perception of the genre, especially today, sounds hopelessly desperate and square. "Indie rock" if there ever was such a thing, is easily the genre that attracts the *most* music-major types. We're talking about the genre of Sufjan Stevens and Sun Kil Moon. Tallest Man on Earth, Fang Island, the Dodos. These are guys who could run through just about anything without breaking a sweat, but they also have a message, they have an atmosphere, they have an attitude. A large percentage of the "indie" music community are not just well-practiced, they are some erudite motherfuckers. To attribute "sloppy and unpracticed" to this genre is to basically come out and say "I'm a doughy-faced dad with my shirt tucked into my pants and I haven't really 'tuned in' to what's going on in music in 15 years or more, so I really, really have no idea what I'm talking about."
And I wasn't talking about signed musicians, really. If you look back at my original post, I was mostly talking about youtube guitarists. Additionally, there are plenty of "fingerstyle" guitarists that I do like, even ones who favor virtuoso displays. I'm not talking about people who incorporate and utilize certain techniques in order to *accomplish a distinct and meaningful musical goal.* I'm talking about a very specific, very exhausting, and very very extensive trend in amateur guitar playing which seems designed to be complex while being mostly vacuous which is not doing the next generation any favors.
It's still not even remotely a "phony criticism." There is, indeed, a shitload of irony in your calling it a "phony criticism." This kind of music, overwhelmingly, has no primal element, it has no emotive element, which is indeed why I believe a lot of people love it. It's a clinical, asexual. It's depressing. The players mostly approximate detached, trite sketches of "happy song" or "kinda sad song" in the most rote fashion possible with a thousand curlicues and hammer-ons and unnecessary notes. Observe the piano technique of a six-year-old Japanese girl who started doing drills when she was 2. It's the KIND of style that a 2 year old could master, because it relies in absolutely no way on emotional maturity, or subtlety, or poetic expression. You don't have to be cool, or wise, or interesting, or eccentric, or charismatic, or empathetic to play it. You don't have to have anger, or sadness, or any emotion really. You don't have to have swagger. You don't have to offer anything as a person, other than the hours you spent memorizing patterns. It should be obvious why youtube nerds favor the style.
You know who can practice for four hours a day if they choose to? *Virtually any human person.* Do you know who can write music with personality, with intuitive and expressive melodies which are not just scale-wandering and convoluted elaborations on themes everybody has already heard a thousand times? *A very, very, very small percentage of the guitarist population.* And with that, we have stumbled on the difference between a learned skill, and a true talent.
Beyond all that? And regardless of all that? The most elite players are, overwhelmingly, the kind who want to make actual art. People in "indie rock" bands, who don't necessarily treasure laser-precision, or flashy superfluous playing, almost universally are making a decision about style, and prioritizing, not in any way covering up for a lack of ability. That is a deluded perspective, which itself seems to be preoccupied with making excuses. Your vision of the snotty "indie" player who makes excuses for not mastering their instrument is *fantastically* out of touch.
And "sappy love song"? What? Were you trying to think of the most ridiculous strawman that you could? Do you recall that you responded to me in the first place because I said *this* piece is superior to that style? How could you possibly go from that to "wat everything has 2 b a sappy luv song now???" What are you talking about exactly?

I feel like overpracticed isn't really the right choice of words. Technique-focused and by that losing sense of melody, harmony and soul, that I understand. There's definitely guitarists that lose themselves in showing off technique if that's what you're talking about, it's always a pity to see that happen.
1Joren Like I said before, I'm talking about "youtube guitarists" which are mostly semi-anonymous if not effectively totally anonymous. Go on stumbleupon and choose "music" as your interest and you'll see a teenager doing this style within a few clicks. I don't have a problem with fingerstyle playing. Sun Kil Moon, The Dodos and Tallest Man on Earth are all mostly fingerstyle players. But while they're all undeniably virtuosos, they play with restraint and economy and expression. When someone becomes as competent as some two-handed guitar players get - i'm talking about people who play nylon string guitars so they can slide around and fingertap more easily and do a ton of hammer-ons with both the left and right hand - it's easy to create a flurry of diatonic notes that makes the internet go "omg so amazing" which is just kind of irritating. More is said with a handful of notes by so many people, and too often those people are dismissed, often by fools like "Scott Bakula" because they don't willfully employ flashy technique to give the impression of musicality....when really....you're talking about a machine-like process of muscle memory and mechanical dexterity, which can be learned by anyone with time to spare and is nothing special. That's what I see in 90% of these players. They're playing all these overstated arpeggios full of hammer-ons and offs and meaningless tapping digressions in order to inundate the listener with notes that are technically all correct, allowing people who don't really care about melodic craftsmanship to sort of imagine any number of riffs or harmonies that are agreeable to them.
I wouldn't say "indie" is my style really, because I don't really think it is a style considering it gets applied to bands that have a classic rock sound, or a serrated dissonant guitar sound but no metal drums or screaming, or a power-pop sound, or an electro-pop sound, or a slacker or lo-fi sound, it's pretty meaningless. I do spend a lot more time thinking about how to craft melodies and studying music than running through exercises or scales, but the rough edges are more incidental than stylistic.

Classical guitar is a great instrument, but people nowadays want volume, they blow their eardrums off using their earphones. Too difficult for them to listen to a quiet and calm instrument

I've never heard anyone call "classical guitar" boring. Don't know where that woman has lived but is sure is a bad place if the people there say that. As for her performance although it is technically great and shows her skills with the guitar I find it too chaotic for my taste. It's obiously meant to impress musicians who have studied this instrument since in all my years of having contact with musicians (not self-tought but ones who studied music; and not being a musician myself) I found out that many them prefer such pieces and get an eargasm from the complexity of the performance and what it looks to me like a complete chaos. I on the other hand prefer Santiago de Murcia, Andrés Segovia, John Williams etc. that is classical guitarists with a more classical sound.

lol yeah i know what you mean i love the chaotic complexity with songs but it felt a little boring when she played toy soldiers like it just sounded like literally sounds effects and not enough actual playing ahaha idk ive heard much better pieces than that one that were more chaotic yet still kept it as a more interesting song. and honestly i love dissonance and chaos. my friends hate it most of the time. but yeah im not even a music theory dude idk any theory really. and yeah that first song was shitty. haha like id never wanna learn that shit or play that. lol

Also that was a pretty sloppy performance of Sunburst. Dynamics were good, but her tempo was kinda all over the place and had quite a few bad notes (including the dead ones).

Toy Soldiers was incredibly unpleasant to listen to. I am all for musical innovation, and I love to see instruments used in unconventional ways. However, there is a right and a wrong way to do this; the audience should still be able to appreciate the piece, otherwise its technical brilliance will simply go over their heads.
+IMakeThings listen to Schönberg or Wyschnegradsky, both made brilliant forms of playing "wrong". You just didn't understand Toy Soldiers.

However, it felt less like a song, and more like a showcase of unusual classical guitar techniques, loosely connected by a plot. My point is simply that a piece should not sacrifice musicality for technical ingenuity, otherwise it will fail to be appreciated by the audience, which in this case defeats the very purpose of the performance.
+IMakeThings How do you know how this song was supposed to be appreciated? Music is amazing because it can convay a lot of things, not just the things that you enjoy. Some music is ugly because the composer wanted it to, just as some music is beutiful because the composer wanted it.

The first piece isn't just a song, it's a story told using a guitar. Like she explained. You need to picture the story of the fight of the toy soldiers in your head, like reading a book.
