  • Few people would consider the ukulele a serious musical instrument. Until, that is, they hear Jake Shimabukuro play one. Jakes uncommon compositions and playing techniques defy labels and categories, and he lays down jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock with equal virtuosity. Occasional tours with Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band have broadened his experience and brought his talent and charming stage presence to crowds of up to fifty thousand people. Jake has also performed on NBCs The Late Show with Conan OBrien, The Today Show, and Last Call With Carson Daly, and been featured on NPRs Morning Edition and World Café, Public Radio Internationals The World, and others. In December 2009, he performed with Bette Midler for Queen Elizabeth during a special fundraising concert in Blackpool, England.

Magic! He is the master of his instrument. Once he starts playing, you forget the instrument, you're just completely absorbed by the music.

Jake! You are the master! My goodness. What a thrill to listen to you. Your love for your instrument is evident, too. I'm a 62 yr old grandma just learning to play the uke. I love it. I'm excited and I'll get there, in my dreams. Thanks for sharing your gift.

Some players need 12 or 6 strings for performance but Jake has just 4 strings and Wow a master on uke! God blessings for your life!

Everyone gets told at least a hundred times a week to go out and do this and do that because you only get one life so you have to make it memorable and amazing and imperfect. But the pressure and reality of that is not everyone is as free as most people feel you or they should be. People like Jake bring me back to the now and the simple joys of having simple passions and living and breathing the things you love to do most, there's no pressure in having and being the best of everything, but if one thing's the best to you then that's all you need :) he's amazing at what he does and i'm glad i came across this today, it was much a needed lift :)

There's Jake, and then there's everybody else.
I saw him open for Bela Fleck a few years ago at Wolftrap, in Vienna, VA, and my girlfriend said, "Who the hell is this kid and why isn't he a household name?"
I said, "He's Jake. Help spread the word."

We will never see anyone or anything like Jake again. See him as much as you can, as often as you can. We will be able, when we're old, to say "I saw Jake Shimabukuru play', and the children then will be wistful, and will dream.

Years ago, when I was in Honolulu, a little guy was playing the Ukelele on the beach.
He came and played for us in the PINK HOTEL. He was special, just like you. I like your voice. You could sing for us too! Well done, Lindsay Sidwell
