So much potential that just lacked that final execution for me. One thing I forgot to say is my 8 year old son loved playing this with me, so definitely a family game for the Christmas list! Love Reggie xxx
Mate, I say this a lot to lovely folks like you and I’ll say again, good for you and I’m glad you’re having fun! Mine is just one opinion of many, and your opinion is as valid as anyone else’s. That’s honestly all that matters and appreciate you sharing this.
@@muhammetzencirli2042 in my play through I never got to a spider fight. The game takes around 25 hours or so to complete the main campaign and there are a lot of missions. So I’m not entirely sure truth be told if that eventually appears as a boss battle later on, but it’s certainly not something that regularly happens.
Impressions from Demo: The RTS execution gives me Spore flashbacks. Just when things should be getting dynamic, it reveals to be have little depth to its strategy. So let's try looking at it through a different lens. The immersive simulation factor. Basic movement and traversal is actually, pretty great. Not in the refined precision platormer kind of way, but it's just intrinsically fun to climb plants, and leap to other surfaces. The RTS aspect supplements the exploration with casual challenge to maintain some sense of stakes, and extrinsic goals, without being overbearing. It's beautifully immersive when you turn off the persistent HUD, but it also deactivates your ability to interact with other ants, so you can't progress the campaign until you change it back. And that feels like a mistake, because the HUD elements don't quite gel with the core ant experience. It might have been cool to be able to somehow show/traverse the underground nests, have the plants bend/move a little, and have more of an open world that offers the sense of discovery. But this commentary is all just based on the demo. I hope it finds a good mod community to illuminate its missed potential.
I'm a bit sad about this, because I have been wanting a good ant game ever since Sim Ant became too old to play (if anyone even remembers that game anymore)
Surprising there haven’t been more games in general tackling the little insectoids with modern day gaming engines. There are so many avenues to go with it. As ever mate, appreciate your comment!
I think there are a whole lot of people who have been waiting for a modern Sim-Ant. I'd even take a remastered version with minor updates. It must be incredibly difficult to make an ant game that works because so few have tried since...
That was my impression from the demo, too, unfortunately. I love how the game looks, I love being able to control my own ant. But there's no depth to anything. Unlike you, I wish they'd go the other route: Drop the RTS part, go full-on "adventures as an ant". Like that Wii-game where you played as a spider or scorpion. I want to explore this world from the pov of an ant, it'd be so amazing. Will get this game on sale. Hopefully the developers make enough profit to give it another shot. They're SO close to something truly great, they just need to re-focus now.
Absolutely banging point about dropping the RTS to. Either way it works, and absolutely a full on adventure game that looks like this could be a winner.
Would love that. I spent an hour on that first branch area you spawn into, just taking in the fact that I’m an ant now. I love the perspective switch it gives you, and adventures as an ant is all I want now, even if it’s just an “ant that lost its way from home and has to journey its way back” thing
Funny thing is. Your review described exactly what I wanted to play! Thank you so much! I just preordered. I just want to relax, survive as an ant. I am not a can’t of RTS.
Would be interesting to see how it competes to the original game from 2000. But yeah, having the RTS part like this is a bummer. As you said, they wanted to keep it realistic, but even then there surely could have been some more unit variety, like having male ants as air support. or have some sub species like African fire ants as late game units. I don't know. The idea is novel and I'm kind of willing to give my support for the game just on the idea alone, but with the small unit variety, I don't really feel like it.
Game feels like it really needs so much more, would have been better to have different types of ecosystems from different regions of the world, and including various insects and vegetation from each region. So you can make an African based colony, USA colony, Asia, South America, etc. Kind of a bummer it is so contained into a good idea, and nothing more. I could see the potential missed which is sad.
Also, if they did regional colony choosing, you could have each species for each region have certain weaknesses and strengths, with access to certain units that other species do not, or upgrades (bullet ant in SA vs regular ant) with unique threats in each region
The game should have taken mechanics from SimAnt of all things with how the "camera" is an ant - SimAnt is honestly PEAK Ant RTS since you manage each "battlefield" can swap ants (even be a useless queen since.... its job is pooping babies), choose how much of the nest ratio is either workers, nest tenders, warriors... create pheromone trails to food to guide works - create battle rallies to usher in a siege against dreaded predators or assault the opposing hive that has either "paradropped" a queen ant in or your hive "paradropped" onto their plot. oh and actually battling as your ant helps... it just needs to merge the Snes variant ith the scope of the PC version and bam, perfect RTS/RPG Ant game
I completely agree with you on that one! I was only able to play the demo, but I constantly wished for a proper RTS without the 3rd person ant mechanics. A floating camera that zips around to enable proper unit and nest management would be so great.
Graphics do look sharp. Too bad they don't really do much. I noticed the leaves don't bend when you're on them. Wonder why they gave you that floaty jump animation? Seems like a great premise, hope to see more from this developer.
I was hoping this game would be similar to empires of undergrowth but in an open world where you can choose 1 of a couple different species e.g leaf cutter and you have to grow and survive in a open world getting resources to grow and expand while defending against various enemies and you can choose to love your base /nest and have to defend queen in transit e.c.t I strongly believe this game would have been better recieved if it was like that because empires of undergrowth is extremely limited in small maps and top down just that but first person and in open world would be a 10/10 game
Would love to hear your thoughts mate after the 5 hour mark. Genuinely, hope you love it. This is a review site so I’m always going to be critical on all aspects of games, so always take it with a pinch of salt. Enjoy!

The game looks beautiful but it manages to be even more simple than Pikmin. It's clear that this was designed for consoles. I didn't hate the demo but it's not something that I would put high on my wishlist or buy at full price.
Even from the gameplay videos on the store you could tell this one was going to look pretty decent but be dull to play. Sad that the reviews coming out are confirming this. Luckily we have Empires of the Undergrowth to satisfy our Ant based strategy cravings.
Thanks for the review, saved me time on buying & downloading a game that looks way worse than Empire of Undergrowth, I think the main problem this game has is the 3rd person view, dev has the same problem most do for the last 20 years , too much focus on graphics not enough on mechanics and tactics which makes RTS games flops, example play Dungeon Keeper an ooooold arse game you will loose lots of time on it because of the mechanics. That's an RTS!!!! Which BTW had an option (spell) to engage in 3rd person OVER 20 years ago! Actually forced you to think outside of the box and do it as some things we're designed unachievable without using that option. Sad EA killed it and the War for the Overworld focused too much on graphics so didn't have the same success. To finish off word of advice from a strategy fanatic to a strategy fanatic, if you know what C&C is and you don't know what Dark Reign is you haven't played all the good strategy games. What a wonderful comment, thank you! The truth is, every time I do a video the metrics are actually very good! The issue is I’m probably not doing enough of them. I really need to be pumping out 2 a week minimum but my own life is just packed (I have a 1 year old boy, job and mod course a wife to manage!). I’m still convinced if I just keep it up the TH-cam god will eventually just push this hard in the algorithm. One thing I can do more of is to verbally ask and push for subscribers and likes, but I personally cringe at that and instead just deploy those little graphics you see here and there. At the end of the day though, if you enjoy the videos and I enjoy making them, then that’s all that matters to me! Your support and kind words make it all worthwhile, and simply commenting or sharing videos in forums etc is the best I could ever ask for. Next review: planet coaster 2 (hopefully by weekend!)
Bummer. I grew up playing countless hours of SimAnt, and i have kept an eye on this game for years now. Why can't anyone just make an updated version of the old SimAnt game?
I think it mainly needs each BuG actually mattering and also having more phisics, also more variety of Upgrades Because I Have seen SO Many Variety of Real Lofe Bug~S
I will get it sooner or later because i want to support unique games like this. Hopefully they fine tune this with some time. I just want to walk around as an ant 😂
Seems like the basic idea has some potential. Open world ant rpg or a puzzle game. That could work. Even an rts or perhaps some God simulator a la Black and White if you drop the third person perspective. There is something there.
Absolutely mate. It just feels a bit undercooked in all areas. A stunning looking game which will bring people in but once you start going through the systems it feels like it’s a bit shallow, which is a shame because it has huge potential.
Yeah i thought this game was gonna scratch that ant sim itch, nah the only one that has still for me is empires of the undergrowth. this is just another rock paper scissors based rts with ants.
There are species of jumping ants, and the basic premise already seems to be that you are a multispecies colony somehow (including beetles for some reason?).
Your main problem then is that it didn't match your interpretation of the steam game description? I personally got Pikmin vibes from the looks of the game the first time

@cockneygamer hahahahah well shit, I'll have to hurry up and see if I can cancel my plane ticket then. While that's being sorted out; I'll be looking forward to more of your content sir.
This is going to be an odd question but-is there a bestiary in the game? Bestiary’s are one of those things in games that I actively seek out to complete
Sort of yes! Not an odd question… you collect stamps of things you come across. I wouldn’t say it was an in-depth bestiary but for sure it’s there. In fact there is a screen of it in the video somewhere for you to pause… let me try and find it…
I mean… I don’t see why them being ant’s matter? 😂 I have watched these ants talk to each other and leap incredible distances like a wolf spider so where do we end the realism aspect?!
I respect your opinion, but I have to respectfully disagree. I'm absolutely in love with this game, it's one of the best game s I've played in a while IMHO
It has an identity problem? Oh no, do the ants spend minutes on end discussing their gender identities and doing half the push ups required as pennance?
Came to say the same thing. It's so exhausting hearing people cry about this shit like they're original. It's so uninteresting and exhausting. Can't people stop fueling the culture war for 5 seconds and have an interesting conversation? @dinosaurb
I was loving the first hour of the game then I was forced to navigate a pretty big stage and look for 3 fireflies. Another hour in I havnt found the last firefly and just refunded the game. I work most of the day and my play time is very limited, I really dislike having to look at every nook and cranny for tiny objectives. I'll spend my time on something else
Ah, the old casual gamer reviewer. The game is actually excellent, if you're having problems platforming you just need to not be terrible at basic movement 😆 If you want all the glorious tactical depth of a simple yet deep fundamentally RTS then play the ranked 1v1 or 3 FFA. It's really terrific. You have your workers, warriors, archers, support units and super predator units. This is the only downside to the game, lack of units but it's fundamentally a rock paper scissors RTS where the terrain and timing for engagement is everything. You also have power ups, that's what your commander unit is for and yes you need to get into the thick of the fights to use some of them. 8.5/10 game 5/10 review
Why would this be a surprise of the year? It's a remake of the original 2000 version. No surprise its a terrible remake, like most remakes tend to be. Ditched nest building for playing as an ant general like in Sim Ant (which has an awful limited view) on a prettier surface. You are better off playing the original for the RTS experience. It's available on GoG. Someone bring back Sim Ant, but make it look this good.
Not sure where some of the big reviewers are plucking out 8 or 9 scores from truth be told. I wanted to like it more than I did but it’s just not good enough. Appreciate your comment mate, cheers 🍻

My wife is American so I’m totally onboard with you guys in my reviews and cultural references, so glad to have you from across the pond and join in!
EDIT: that sounded like an invitation for a threesome but I meant join the Cockney Gamer gang! 😂
@cockneygamer hahahahah well shit, I'll have to hurry up and see if I can cancel my plane ticket then.
While that's being sorted out; I'll be looking forward to more of your content sir.
@JFinker73 haha, appreciate it! Planet coaster 2 is my next one on the books for the weekend!
Is there a fidelity and performance mode for graphics
This is going to be an odd question but-is there a bestiary in the game? Bestiary’s are one of those things in games that I actively seek out to complete
Sort of yes! Not an odd question… you collect stamps of things you come across. I wouldn’t say it was an in-depth bestiary but for sure it’s there. In fact there is a screen of it in the video somewhere for you to pause… let me try and find it…
Just checked… pause the video at 01:40 to get the view!
Oh sweet-totally missed that. Thanks alot!
@GojoStiglitz you are most welcome mate
Tactical retreat, flanking lol 😅They are ants , what strategy are you looking for……
I mean… I don’t see why them being ant’s matter? 😂 I have watched these ants talk to each other and leap incredible distances like a wolf spider so where do we end the realism aspect?!
I respect your opinion, but I have to respectfully disagree. I'm absolutely in love with this game, it's one of the best game s I've played in a while IMHO
My friend, that’s all that matters. Your opinion. Not anyone else’s. Glad you’re having fun with it!
The most unrealistic part of this game is that the ants are smart and they can jump very far
They made it for console/controller which is not ideal for an RTS, sad
This game is fun as hell.
Ants in the pants :)
Wait you know what i do at swimming pools :)
Don’t get the negative reviews, it’s a brilliant game
it has potential but there is just nothing to do or work for.
Man i love this game but after 8 hours of me playing it crashed and won’t let me back in saying a EU error don’t know how to fix it lol.
It has an identity problem? Oh no, do the ants spend minutes on end discussing their gender identities and doing half the push ups required as pennance?
Hahaha… I mean it is 2024 after all so who knows!
genuinely: why can't I escape people like you even in an ant video
Came to say the same thing. It's so exhausting hearing people cry about this shit like they're original. It's so uninteresting and exhausting. Can't people stop fueling the culture war for 5 seconds and have an interesting conversation? @dinosaurb
Maybe you can play as a bee that is transitioning to an ant
I was loving the first hour of the game then I was forced to navigate a pretty big stage and look for 3 fireflies. Another hour in I havnt found the last firefly and just refunded the game. I work most of the day and my play time is very limited, I really dislike having to look at every nook and cranny for tiny objectives. I'll spend my time on something else
I'm sorry but: 😂
Ah, the old casual gamer reviewer. The game is actually excellent, if you're having problems platforming you just need to not be terrible at basic movement 😆
If you want all the glorious tactical depth of a simple yet deep fundamentally RTS then play the ranked 1v1 or 3 FFA.
8.5/10 game
5/10 review
Why would this be a surprise of the year? It's a remake of the original 2000 version. No surprise its a terrible remake, like most remakes tend to be.
Ditched nest building for playing as an ant general like in Sim Ant (which has an awful limited view) on a prettier surface.
You are better off playing the original for the RTS experience. It's available on GoG.
Someone bring back Sim Ant, but make it look this good.
I like your review, but the game is just rubbish.
Not sure where some of the big reviewers are plucking out 8 or 9 scores from truth be told.
I wanted to like it more than I did but it’s just not good enough. Appreciate your comment mate, cheers 🍻
I just wish I saw your video before I bought this game. I totally agree with all your saying. This game is not for me. Thx brother. 👍
@@HipHopGraffiti69all good, and hey, when you see the graphics I don’t blame you! It could have been amazing. I should be getting Planet Coaster 2 review out in a few hours for you all too!
this is just dynasty warriors ants. game is going to be boring as fuck!
