Off to Savannah... without a Flight Plan!

  • Well, THIS had not happened to me in a long, long time: I departed in the Bonanza without loading my flight plan into the GPS. Fortunately, the Garmin GTN 750Xi made this task easy in the air, even with the Tango and Victor airways in my clearance. From then on, Copilot Beckey and I enjoyed a beautiful flight to Savannah, GA.

    Thanks for another nice video, Martin. Good to see you back in the copilot seat again, Beckey! In mid-February I got the wife to go with me to the Buckey AOPA fly-in. It had been a very long time for her. We had a great time! Linda used to work at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick. After I retired, I worked for Gulfstream at their facility in Brunswick, too. On nice days, I'd ride my motorcycle up to Savannah and drive down Victory Blvd, with all those wonderful old mansions. Beautiful part of the country, and we both miss it. We almost chose to live there. But, Arizona called. Hope to see you two at Oshkosh. We'll be there again, as well as Cedar Rapids, this summer. So easy to miss after start items especially with distractions "oh there's a rainbow" or in a hurry. At work, we always have all that stuff done before pushback, but in the light airplane GA world most of us don't power on avionics before engine start. What I've done in my GA flying is after engine start, I have a pretty thorough "After Start" checklist that additionally captures all the essential steps for avionics setup. I don't taxi until those items are all done. Martin, I didn't see an after start check in your flow so maybe this is something to consider. I very much enjoy your videos.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are right, I do not have an AFTER START section on my checklist. I do want to give myself a little flexibility as to where and when I get the ATIS, program the flight plan, etc. In a jet with ground power or APU, you can do all that before starting the engines, but as you said in the light GA world it's usually all done after engine start. Sometimes it makes sense to vacate the spot where I was parked quickly and defer other tasks to when/where I'm not in the way of others. At other times I have plenty of time after start-up. Granted, that should not be an excuse for taking off without the NAV setup completed.

      Martin

    This is actually a hidden pro move! If you think you might get a re-route later, you can just enter the first waypoint or two and leave the rest out until you get that route change! You were just really ahead of the game for that!

    You flew right over Wassaw Sound, the suspected location of the “Tybee Nuclear Bomb” lost in 1958 when an F-86 collided with a B-47 attempting to land at Hunter Airfield. Hunter was a SAC base at the time. The bomb was never found and is still out there buried deep in the mud…. There were no lives lost in the collision. The F-86 driver parachuted into the woods and was picked up by a family who proceeded to get him liquored up…😬

You have the Bahamas close by with some of the most beautiful islands in the world an hour or two away. It is over open water. Even if you go to Palm Beach and go direct Freeport. I have a GNX375 however I find it much much quicker to whip together a flight plan on my phone, using ForeFlight and beam it to the Garmin even enroute. I always file direct and 99% of the time I get it so I don’t have to fuss around with airways and waypoints.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      You are right, I could have sent the route from Garmin Pilot to the GTN. In that "oh crap" moment, though, my first thought was "how do I get the first waypoint into the GPS that ATC will likely turn me to". So I entered MALET manually into the GTN. From there, it was pretty easy to continue the edits.

    29:03 Why would the controller offer changing from a longer headwind runway to a shorter crosswind runway? Was it for a more direct approach, or did he just mistake wind speed for direction? He sounded a bit confused.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The approach the controller offered was a more direct, straight-in path from where we were, but would have meant landing with a strong crosswind and briefing/programming a new approach. I felt it was easier to stick with what he had started, even if that meant five more minutes of flight time.

      @@martinpauly yeah this is working pretty good flight away. I would have to be real time I’m looking for something I can recover later. I was able to capture most of what the flight plan was and follow along as if I was flying it. It’s kind of a good technique, I’m able to practice, loading my charts, etc. evaluate different stuff. Yeah I was just thinking if you could just throw it in the comments maybe just what the plan route was there when you get changes could practice what you’re experiencing in the airplane

      @@padsliderfranco9561 Ok, maybe I am not understanding your question. The comments for this video do indeed include the planned route: Route of flight: KMLB MALET T208 SMYRA V3 KELER KSAV, altitude: 9,000' MSL. Is that what you were looking for?

    The bonanza Society had a TH-cam video that showed putting the flaps down first at the initial approach fix and not extending the gear until intercepting the final approach fix. Do you do that procedure or is that an option that they recommend? They were entering the initial approach fix at 120 kn and then extending the flaps brings it to 110. Extending the gear at the final approach fix automatically seem to allow the aircraft to descend at the proper glidepath. How true is this?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. Let’s start with the gear: yes, lowering the gear at the final approach fix works great in many airplanes, including the Bonanza.
      As for flaps, while I don’t see anything wrong with lowering them before the FAF, I don’t really see any advantages of doing that. If I want to slow to 110 KIAS, I reduce power. I bring out approach flaps sometime after the FAF (maybe around halfway to the runway). Full flaps only after landing is assured, so that in case of a go-around I don’t have to mess with the significant configuration change from full flaps to none.
      I’ve also flown with Bonanza pilots who don’t use any flaps on an instrument approach until landing is assured. With the gear down, Bonanzas slow down quite well, so there are many ways which work to manage speed and energy on an approach - including the ABS-proposed method, of course.
      I hope this helps!

      @@martinpauly Well I thought messing with configuration after the FAF upsets a stabilized approach? I extend my flaps around the mid scale of the glideslope or 1 mile from the FAF because I limit drag and increased fuel burn, then I hit the gear at GS intercept and by that time its small power changes to runway in sight. Then when landing is assured, I’ll use more flaps as needed. Guess it really personal preference. I saw this video on the Bonanza Society TH-cam channel. It was titled “By The Numbers.”

      @@aviatortrucker6285 It upsets a stabilized approach no more than it upsets level flight leading up to the FAF. Either one requires pitch changes to remain stabilized.
      Having said that, in the A36 it’s not a big deal to bring partial flaps out on an ILS or LPV approach - a gentle push on the yoke until the speed decreases a bit, and you’re all set. A good autopilot (like my Garmin GFC 600) will play through this easily.

    It goes to show doesn’t matter how much flight experience you have if we don’t take a breather and make sure everything is correct before takeoff. This is what happens. Question would be what if you forgot what you first checkpoint was suppose to be? Thank goodness this was just a minor discrepancy that did not lead to a bad ending. Pretty woman equal distractions!

      Comment is kind of dramatic! His not loading FP is a minor thing. It is actually good practice because we have to reload FP often. Martin is an excellent pilot. By the way if he forgot something he only has to ask. Not a big deal I the real world. But you are correct better to load what you can before takeoff. If you forget easy to,fix.

      @@user-iw3mr2lv6f suppose he or anybody else was taking off into hard IFR, or even worse hard IFR at night. Anything you got a fool around with after you takeoff because you could’ve done it or should’ve done it on the ground is dramatic. This is why we have all kinds ofgeneral aviation accidents. Even look at TN fly girl who didn’t load anything or didn’t know how to load anything. What did she do? She tried to do everything in the air when she should’ve done it on the ground. I have even heard on TH-cam of a high time pilot with five figure hours crash because he was busy changing or fumbling around with something that should’ve been done on the ground. It’s part of your checklist. It wasn’t that hard in IFR but where was his head? It was busy with the flight plan when it should’ve been checking for traffic. Just saying.

      So… not knowing what my cleared (or filed) route is would be a problem. I always write my clearance down on paper (on my clip board). I also have an email with my filed route which I can bring up on my phone or the iPad.
      Worst case: I can ask the controller what my cleared route is. Kind of embarrassing, but better than heading in the wrong direction. Another useful tool is to ask ATC for an initial heading, so I can go in roughly the right direction while programming the GPS.
