Big Ohio State fan here right outside of Columbus. I’ll never forget that night when we took down Alabama to win the College football playoff. We were on our 3rd string QB and most really didn’t think Cardale could get us that win. Love it, great video!
Thank you for the rewind on my home state Ohio State Buckeyes….for decades, this was the only Ohio sports team in the state that didn’t break your heart.
Well, its ok he played well during that short time. That entire team was special during that run and sometimes lightning in a bottle happens which it did. This is coming from a Bama fan. Just calling it like it is/was as that Buckeye team was special when it needed to be. And that's why (Paul Harvey voice) ...we love college football because anything can happen.
Honestly though, there's no sport that has the monster upsets that changes years quite like college football. Even when Bama is destroying everyone, it's still so much fun to watch the regular season games because of the chance of something wild happening
This game was pivotal for Bama too. After this, Saban realized he had to ditch the pro style offense and switch to a spread based scheme, and they got back on track after this winning 3 of the next 6 national titles.
I'm a Buckeye transplant who moved to Eugene in the 90's and watched the Oregon program grow into what it is now. So I have a soft spot for the Ducks. I'd gone to Autzen earlier that year and saw all the "We want 'bama"! T shirts. So the night after the Ducks had beaten Fl. St. and the Buckeyes had beaten Alabama I was walking into Matt Knight Arena with a friend to watch the Ducks hoopsters play the Beavers. A group of Duck fans walking in front of us were talking about the Natl Championship game and were quite disappointed they weren't going to get their shot at 'bama. I told my friend, unless they can stop Zeke off-tackle, they'd better be careful what they wish for. Of course revenge was exacted a few weeks ago and I havent seen a "we want bama' shirt since. Gotta love college football. cheers.
I find it interesting that the OSU Bama game ending up being remembered more than the actual title game. Just goes to show how forgettable Oregon and the Pac 12 are nowadays
Oh man, we get a new voice on this one! At least new to me haha. The scripts sound very natural coming from mr. Godfrey. Also good to have a rewinder highlighting the transition to the cfp. Great work
You know, as an Alabama fan, it makes me proud to see us on the losing end of several of these deep rewinds. Just goes to show the program that Coach Saban has built, when our losses have so much significance to the culture of college football. I love that Alabama is the Darth Vader of college football, it means we're doing something right down here!
After playing college football for over a humdred years it's good to see Ohio State to have one victory over Alabama. I can see why OSU's so excited about their single win.
Something that was really cool about this game to me was how so many of the key players for Ohio State were natives of the 17th state, despite OSU's new focus on national recruiting. Cardale Jones, Cleveland. Devin Smith, Massillon. Steve Miller, Canton.
This has to be the second best run in Buckeyes history, after the Maurice Clarett game saving td. Clarett also stripped the ball back from the defender after he fumbled and almost lost the game. That championship was the one that brought Ohio State back from the grave. Either way you rank them. These are the two most meaningful wins in Ohio State history.
Clarett didn’t fumble on that play. Sean Taylor intercepted Krenzel in the end zone and Clarett ran him down and basically stole the ball from him as he made the tackle
Last point is debatable for a program with such a rich and storied past. Bama game was among most satisfying and “necessary” ones for sure. But you don’t close the deal v Oregon some luster is lost. Don’t feel quite the same about last season. The glory of smacking Clemson down had a feeling of vindication for the season before, when OSU had a very good defense, and though badly banged up going to the CFP, was still better than Clemson or LSU before Fields got dinged later that season. The injuries (to Dobbins too)would have kept them from beating LSU though, just the same as they limited them badly v Bama
I'm a born and raised Bama fan with 44 seasons of cheering on the Crimson Tide under my belt. That Bama team had one of the best defenses I've seen them have in those 44 years and I felt pretty confident going into that game because of that defense, and the fact that Bama had pretty much owned Meyers while he was the coach of the gators. Needless to say that Ohio State game was one I'd like to forget.
WTF are you talking about? Prior to 2019, the 2014 defense was statistcally Alabama's worst defense since 2007. They were decent against the run, but were like 53rd against the pass. They had given up 19 points and over 300 yards per game....by far the most since 2007.
As a buckeye fan, it was such a great feeling to do this to bama right after everyone said that we didn’t deserve to be there. And then went on to beat Oregon 42-20
I was there and it is my favorite game of all time. The environment was electric and the outcome was epic. 1 OSU over Bama 2 OSU over Miami in double over time thriller (was there as well) 3 OSU come from behind to beat LSU in the last two minutes scored like 15 points with #2 making some great receptions. Hoping to add another to this list in 2025 vs Texas Go Bucks
Since this game the SEC is a perfect 9-0 in semi-finals of the College Football Playoffs in 7 seasons. I don't see the derailment of the SEC's dominance of college football from this OSU vs Bama game. 5 out of the past 7 National Champions are SEC teams with the last 3 in a row from 3 different SEC teams. The SEC became even more dominant after this game.
As an Ohio State fan that game brings me more joy than any other game ever has and that was the loudest I’ve ever screamed at the TV because not only did we take down Goliath at that point we were coming off a pretty disappointing decade of Ohio State football. We won the natty in 02 but lost start running back Maurice Clarrett then we had an okay 2003 where we lost to Michigan and won the Fiesta Bowl again. In 04 we went 8-4, in 05 we were super close to beating Texas who went on to win the natty but still not a horrible season going 11-2 with another Fiesta Bowl win. In 06 our best team in decades got curb stomped by Florida in 07 we lost again in the natty to LSU and we lost the Fiesta Bowl in 08 to Texas in 09 when it was supposed to be the year we lost to USC in a heartbreaker and got upset by Purdue but we won the Rose Bowl in 2010 we went 12-1 winning the sugar bowl but missed out on the natty thanks to an upset to Wisconsin and that’s when the tattoo scandal broke out and led to Tressel being fired. 2011 we went 6-7 in the aftermath of that scandal, in 2012 we went 12-0 but thanks to a post season ban we didn’t get to play for a natty against Notre Dame, in 2013 we went 12-0 only to lose to Michigan State in the big ten championship ruining another chance at a natty and we lost to Clemson and lost Braxton Miller to an injury. So when you add up those disappointments and being so close to a natty only to choke it away 4 times and have the opportunity taken away from you one other time beating Alabama and winning that natty just felt amazing and it was a relief because every other time since 2002 we choked when we got that close.
Thank you for bringing back joy. Ohio State fan here I found it ironic that Urban Meyer the person who wiped the floor with Ohio State with Florida Helped the Ohio State beat Alabama 🤔🤣🤣🤣
Respect for Saban after that game. After the game he congratulated OSU and acted liked Bama got beaten by a better team. Not upset at all about the huge loss. But that also gave the vibe that Bama has been champs previously and will be again. No big deal losing this game.
Great video! That was such a wild season for the Buckeyes. I went to two games that year. My first experience in Columbus to watch Virginia Tech and the Sugar Bowl. I still remember my pops booking our Sugar Bowl trip at halftime of the Big Ten championship without knowing if Ohio state would jump TCU. Great memories. Go bucks.
This was a big win for Ohio State, but it did not derail the SEC dominance. FSU did that to Auburn if talking about the NC streak. Plus Bama went on to win multiple championships after that year.
I was at this game. As a Buckeye Fan, this literally brought a tear to my eye reliving this moment. You guys are simply the F*&KING best at sports stories
In this particular situation, my interpretation of derailed would be completely stopping Alabama's reign of terror over college football for an ex-amount of years. So far, that hasn't happened.
To that point Saban and Bama were 3-0 in the BCS going for titles when they had a chance, not to mention Florida and LSU were 3-1 as well (LSUs loss was to Bama). So the SEC was 6-0 going for titles against other conferences. Following this run, Bama is 3-3 and LSUs win in 2019 makes it 4-4 (counting the Georgia loss to Bama in the 2017 season)
@@buckguy720 But the title says the SEC (not Bama) was derailed. You can’t really count those losses where the teams played each other in the playoffs. That’s even more of a dominance, and it could continue this season.
OSU Alumni and been going to games for 26 plus years, this one is my favorite of All TIME and I vividly remember watching this play from the stands. GO BUCKEYES!

I’m an OSU fan and the amount of times I’ve rewatched this game and the natty game can’t be counted and every time I get goosebumps watching them. Watching this video gave me goosebumps like never before knowing that miracle of a season is what brought CFB back alive and kept the SEC from dominating
Except this didn't keep the SEC from dominating. You know....since the SEC went on to play in the next 6 National Championship games, winning 4 of them
@@darthsaban8665lol 3 decades, 3 different coaching staffs, 3 nattys. Now the SEC cant keep up with paying players because their alumni dont have jobs. 😂. Suck my B1G dominance!
One thing everyone forgets is our starting MLB Reggie Ragland got a concussion earlier in the game and was replaced by true freshman Shaun-Dion Hamilton, who got absolutely shellacked to spring Zeke on this play
Godfrey! your delivery and the retro soundtrack just gave me goosebumps,I thought back to when I was actually this game! and the excitement I felt for OSU. to finally knock off AU.
This was only missing one detail at the end: this was then followed by another six years in a row where a team from the south won the national championship, even if two titles were by an ACC team. Every Midwest/Plains team that entered the playoff was destroyed by an SEC/Clemson team. So far in 2021, it looks more than likely that Alabama or Georgia will give the same dismantling to whatever unlucky team draws one of them.
Georgia is never elite. They'll get exposed in time. Alabama looks vulnerable. B1G looks to have 3 legit CFP contenders right now (not including Michigan, they're not actually good). Probably OSU will recover from the bad early loss and steamroll everyone with the best offense in the nation. It's literally just Alabama that's the problem, ever. The rest of the SEC is dogwater unless they get some rare generational talent like Burrow that can carry them. Otherwise it's a sea of very overrated teams held up by Bama. Also, including Clemson in the SEC just because of geography is idiotic. The two conferences, especially right now, hate each other. This is about the SEC, not the south, so grouping them in makes no sense
@@imafraidjumitebeeinnagang155 the video explicitly makes the point that it was SOUTHERN dominance- mentioning the fsu and texas titles in one of the map segments
Not to mention the fact that the cfp has only exacerbated the issues that were present with the bcs- we now have even more stratification between the haves and have-nots in college football.
@@gideonsochay.2098 That was so long ago, though. I mean, I'm a college student and I'm too young to remember that stuff. As far as I'm concerned that's all that matters for college football. They're both totally irrelevant now, as are the other non-Bama SEC teams. Literally the only contenders (outside of the LSU flash in a pan) have been Bama, Clemson, and OSU. SEC dominance isn't what it was because it's just one team and I don't think there's a single Bama or Clemson fan who'd want their team grouped together with the other under some nebulous "southern dominance" narrative
It’s October 1, 2021… we’re at the Urban Chophouse in Columbus, OH… we’re watching Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer at the restaurant’s bar We’re asking ourselves: how did we get here? Let’s rewind…
LSU fan here. It's not just about the rivalries. With so many high end programs (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU. Auburn), We have come to understand what we do to each other is our own thing but it's much better for our own school if someone we beat or beats us does well against another school, especially out of conference. Making the other leagues look bad on the national stage (Obviously LSU isn't doing that this year) boosts the SEC image, and that helps everyone (except Vandy who will always get a pass). We also have OU and Texas coming in so it's going to be even more vital to keep the perception of the other P5s limited. This brings better players not only to Alabama and LSU, but to MS State and Texas A&M.
@@JK-ce5lo a lot of your teams are over ranked and with the partnership your conference has with ESPN you get built-in promotion I watched after 1998 how ESPN dog the Big ten which by the way they offered the money first to. in order to prop up your conference the only team that I give any respect to is LSU because they're the only ones who would do a home alone a home and away game against legit power 5 team Alabama won't even come across the Mason-Dixon line y'all have every built-in advantage bowl games down south then when you do a non-conference game you do it in the southern field just check Alabama schedule it's ridiculous
@@andrejamison2723 pretty sure its OSU that has the overrated and easy conference. In the 21st century Bama has won 6 titles (1 vs OSU), LSU has won 3 titles (1 vs OSU), UF has won 2 titles (again 1 vs OSU) and Auburn 1 won. Has anyone else in OSU's conference even made it to title?

Well done video and glad to see it. One thing to note is that the disrespect for the Big Ten conference was out of control before this season. Many were saying it shouldn't have even been considered a Power 5 conference after the Buckeyes lost to Virginia Tech. It made this run all the more satisfying!
@@alexanderbuffington6711 So? His backup was the starter most of the year and scored 2 TDs in the game. You still had Fields and what everyone says is the best WR corps in the country this year. Alabama lost the Heisman winner for the entire second half, had WRs 2 and 3 playing on shattered ankles and still outscored Ohio St 17-7 in the second half with Mac throwing throwing ball to Slade Bolden. Hell....we dropped 52 in 3 quarters and could have hung 80 if necessary. Besides....if Ohio Sts only chance to compete hung on the production of one player, they never had much of a chance to begin with.
Most meaningful game I’ve ever been apart of as an Ohio State fan 1) Known Saban/Meyer rivalry 2) Ohio State losing NC in ‘07 and ‘08 to SEC 3) OSU huge dogs (almost 2 tds if I remember)
I grew up in Mississippi. I remember seeing Eddie George and the Buckeyes play Penn St for the first time. Instant Buckeye fan. This game was top 3 buckeye games ever played. The other 2 are against Michigan.
You mean the first time YOU saw them play? The first game with Penn State in the Big 10 (1993)? I don't think you saw their first game ever - your grandpa didn't see that one.
They have changed college football so much over the yrs. Bowl games are very different than they were when I first watched college games in the early 2000s. It's still good
I was at the Ohio state game when we lost to virgins tech earlier that season, and I remember thinking we would be lucky to win 10 games. I ended up going to that sugar bowl game in New Orleans and it was amazing how much of a turn around that team made since losing to VT in week 2
This season has a similar feel to it. Lost in week 2 against Oregon the team we beat for the national championship back in 2015. Started off the year shaky finish it off with a bang
Growing up out side of Columbus, this was during my senior year of high school. I remember everyone saying OSU was doomed when Braxton Miller was out for another season. Then JT popped off all season. Then I remember everyone being hesitant with Cardale Jones after he took over. Everyone, even OSU fans thought they were doomed but they just popped off. I remember being out to eat at a tavern in Columbus during the Big 10 championship and people were screaming about how bad we blew out Wisconsin. This playoff run was awesome, even the Oregon vs OSU Championship game. Felt good to be in Ohio when OSU won the first College Football Playoff Championship
Cardale Jones' role should NOT be understated, by any stretch. He showed real skill, prowess, talent and POWER - He even trucked an Alabama defender on at least one or two plays!
Thanks for this, it was awesome. As a European NFL fan (GO BIRDS!) im really thankful for the explenation in the beginning. Always wanted to follow college football, but the ranking thing is just so confusing and the whole thing messy. Think i will follow Ohio from now on even though Zeke played there once.
Hello! Welcome to college football! I went to Ohio State and I think we're a great team to follow! OSU is a great team to follow because winning it all is always an uphill battle for us, so it's worth a huge celebration, but one that's doable each year so there's a lot of hope and drive and no boredom with success. Just a side note, be careful about saying "Ohio" instead of "Ohio State", Ohio University is a separate team than OSU and they get very sensitive about the distinction. OSU isn't even allowed to produce licenced merchandise that just says "Ohio" on it, OU is very serious about that. Most Ohio State fans won't care much though.
That 9-6 game is a classic. Big offensive plays are fun to watch, but so are defensive battles. The tensions of who will score first and knowing that whoever does may win the game. Given credit where it’s due bro.
Nah bro you forgot to mention florida state won it the year before to a Cinderella story Auburn team. Then OSU wins but since that year bama has won 3 out of 6 and one of those was LSU.SEC is still dominating. IT JUST MEANS MORE in the SEC
Eh, I'm an Ohio State fan, but I'm not going to lie, I'm deeply disappointed with this Rewinder. Many of the previous ones were very emotional and threw-back to countless moments leading up to the final play. This one just kind of talks about it being the "first playoff" and "Alabama dominates" but completely misses the emotion and build-up to why this was so important. You could've touched on Braxton a lot more and the 2013 Buckeyes that missed the BSC title game in the B1G Title Game the year prior and Clemson breaking Braxton's shoulder. The heartbreak of getting pushed to #11 after only one loss and climbing back to contention, JUST for JT to break his ankle. The 59-0 game and still believing TCU and Baylor would be in front of us, to suddenly making it. The the torment that everyone said Alabama would roll us. We were the underdogs, by a LONGSHOT, and this video doesn't really capture that. It makes it seem like this was just a "Oh SEC lost a close one" moment, when this at the time was DEVASTATING to Alabama and the SEC. There is a reason this play is call "85 Yards Through The Heart of the South". Theres almost no emotion is Steven's voice, and that's something he can improve and nothing against him for sure, but this video just doesn't do this moment justice...
I don’t even watch college football, but your videos inspired me to watch next season. TH-cam help me pick a team to root for, if possible maybe a team with a lot of heart brake. I’m a Vikings fan so I love the pain of being so close, yet so far away
That run was just moments after one of the color commentators said the two best running backs in collage are playing and both of them play for Alabama, Wonder if he needed a little tabasco sauce to make his foot taste better. screw the SEC
I asked two years ago and I'll ask again. Where is the Rewinder for Dirk Nowitzki's game winner in game 2 of the 2011 NBA Finals? Hopefully there's one soon!

Big Ohio State fan here right outside of Columbus. I’ll never forget that night when we took down Alabama to win the College football playoff. We were on our 3rd string QB and most really didn’t think Cardale could get us that win. Love it, great video!
We didn't take down Bama to win the title, but I know what you mean
As an Ohio State fan, I love this play and I LOVE that the Buckeyes were the first CFP Champ.
Will they be the first champ in the new 12 team playoff too??????????????? how sick would that be?
Thank you for the rewind on my home state Ohio State Buckeyes….for decades, this was the only Ohio sports team in the state that didn’t break your heart.
I don't even like Ohio State but that run gave me chills. Taking down a monster like Alabama was unbelievable
Cardale Jones was so good that year, bless his heart
Well, its ok he played well during that short time.
That entire team was special during that run and sometimes lightning in a bottle happens which it did.
This is coming from a Bama fan. Just calling it like it is/was as that Buckeye team was special when it needed to be.
And that's why (Paul Harvey voice) ...we love college football because anything can happen.
Honestly though, there's no sport that has the monster upsets that changes years quite like college football. Even when Bama is destroying everyone, it's still so much fun to watch the regular season games because of the chance of something wild happening
I think those three games ruined Cardale. He wasn't ready to go pro, and really needed some more development.
This game was pivotal for Bama too. After this, Saban realized he had to ditch the pro style offense and switch to a spread based scheme, and they got back on track after this winning 3 of the next 6 national titles.
So right ,thanks for the lost Osu. Some losses make you better and some wins make you better.
changed the defense too. no more Trey Depreists lol
@@Nas-nl8hu LMFAO
He definitely changed that defense up and got a slimmer defensive front 7.
I hate Bama but I hope they win every year so people can stop watching college football! Let it get old!

@@Clay3613 found the buckeye fan
as an oregon fan and cowboys fan, i enjoy this run, but it also brings me pain
Oooh, now THAT's what I call conflicting emotions
Gotta love college football. cheers.
You got some revenge this season. Go Bucks!!
Your so called Heisman winner that year was a joke.
I find it interesting that the OSU Bama game ending up being remembered more than the actual title game. Just goes to show how forgettable Oregon and the Pac 12 are nowadays
As a lifelong buckeye fan, I can honestly say that this meant significantly more than winning the national title did.
I think it was more because the national championship game that year was mostly a blowout in Ohio State's favor
I know this is a dumb thing to say, but some REALLY bad turnovers kept that game from being a blowout. OSU really outplayed Oregon.
Yet the Oregon-FSU game will forever gift us with the Jameis Winston Yakety Sax fumble play. An all timer.
I loved how after the game media was like, oh well, the had their fun, but Oregon is a lock. Oregon sucks lol 🤣🤣. 0 Natty's
I can see why OSU's so
excited about their single win.
This Ohio State season deserves a movie. It was completely illogical and magical all at the same time.
Preach, bubba
The 2014 championship was better because it didn’t require the worst penalty in history to hand the game to tOSU.
@@JamesDB2 not the worst, but still a bad call.
I was only 10 years old but I remember it so well, me and my dad screaming at the tv as zeek broke free. a memory forever with me as a buckeye.

Cardale is a legend I'll never forget watching that season with my Dad. Go Bucks
I watched that game, and I cannot describe how gratifying it was to see Ezekiel Elliott thrust a dagger into the heart of the ‘Bama defense.
This is hands down my favorite football game of all time
One of the best days of my life as an Ohio state fan. To me, this game was even more memorable than the ensuing national Championship game.

The SEC became even more dominant after this game.

One of my favorite Buckeye games of all time
This is actually one of the best rewinders I've seen, Steven did a great job on his first video damn.
That whole season for Ohio State needs a rewind
Respect for Saban after that game. After the game he congratulated OSU and acted liked Bama got beaten by a better team. Not upset at all about the huge loss. But that also gave the vibe that Bama has been champs previously and will be again. No big deal losing this game.
Finally another football rewind I love these
Great video!
The point is it was southern dominance for 10 years
I was at this game.
Right, I’m not even an Alabama fan but fast forward 6 years and they just stomped Ohio state out for their 3 title since this moment
The title is inaccurate. It says the SEC was derailed, and that is very wrong. If anything it was a hiccup.
@@buckguy720 But the title says the SEC (not Bama) was derailed. You can’t really count those losses where the teams played each other in the playoffs. That’s even more of a dominance, and it could continue this season.

A lot of us remember where we were, who we were with, and the sheer ectasy of the moment. It was a great way to turn the Tide!
Turned the Tide? Literally won the very next year and OSU didn't even make the playoffs.
The way fans of SEC bottom feeder teams used to brag about the exploits of Bama or LSU was so annoying, like aren't y'all rivals?

85 yards through the heart of the South.
Most meaningful game I’ve ever been apart of as an Ohio State fan
1) Known Saban/Meyer rivalry
2) Ohio State losing NC in ‘07 and ‘08 to SEC
3) OSU huge dogs (almost 2 tds if I remember)

Has a diehard Buckeye fan that was one of my favorite moments in Buckeye history.
