- Do you ever think about how fortunate the universe is that Reggie's last name rhymes with the action he performed on that fateful day? "The Bush Push" is simply a perfect name for a moment that will last forever in our memory, regardless of what folks try to do to the legacy of its titular player.
But do you remember everything that paved the way to the push being so noteworthy? To appreciate everything that made it matter and just how wildly different things could've been had it not happened - we need to rewind.

I was at this game !! An 8 year old die hard Irish fan. Raised in the middle-class, my dad saved a good chunk of change to take he, my grandfather, and I up to South Bend for a huge showdown between two highly ranked teams.
I’ve yet to even begin this video. I simply had to comment and express my excitement for covering this game. Being such a big fan of this channel, its super awesome to see a break-down of one of the most vivid memories of my childhood.. with that said, let’s rewind.

I was 10 at the time and watched this on TV in Oklahoma. I specifically remembered every moment. was upset my team lost but was a grat game regardless
I’m a huge ND fan, I was 7. I’ll never forget it too. My favorite players to this day is Brady Quinn, Jeff Samarja, and funnily enough Reggie Bush.
As a die hard Irish fan, this game still makes my blood pressure rise. Notre Dame deserved to win that day.
That note on Carroll being against instant replay is interesting to note, seeing how it was the replacement refs watching the instant replay and making the wrong call that led to his Seahawks winning the Fail Mary game.
Yes indeed! I also found it a little interesting that, in the exact same way as his Super Bowl vs New England later in his career, in this game Carrol chooses NOT to put the ball in the hands of his unstoppable RB with the game on the line. Although it worked out for him here (partially thanks to the RB Bush for shoving Leinart forward haha!) it would not work out against New England as we all know

To put into context for those of you who may be too young to remember just how dominant 04-05 was during this time picture this: a team as explosive and having as many weapons and as great of quarterback play as today’s Ohio State, and as intimidating and stout defensively as today’s Alabama and Georgia (with possible even more talent and depth). Now combine that with the fact that USC was known for being HUGE, almost comically so across the line of scrimmage during this time.
I graduated High School in ‘05 (I’m 35 now). That USC team was UNREAL!!
that's why this result was so odd. USC was a team of men amongst boys, and ND was already physically inferior because of their strict academic requirements so SC's physical advantage was even greater. i still can't figure out how they ever managed to score 31 against that monstrous defense that was basically all future nfl draft picks.
@@oldfrend Absolutely, one of these reasons was ND used USC’s aggression against them, while SC was indeed far more talented, their defense did have trouble that year stopping more complex offenses, plus while his tenure there ending on a low note, Charlie Weiss was many times a very highly rated play caller.

@@WillyNelson-r2g Yup, they were easily the most popular college team ever, situated in media centric LA, they had back to back Heisman Qb’s, Matt Leinart played for one of the state’s most famous high school programs and now was the QB for a national champion, and let’s be real, the uniforms were pretty dope too.
An amazing game. Another wrinkle to this story was that ND instructed their grounds crew to NOT cut the grass that week in an attempt to keep USC's speed to a minimum.

Pushing a runner forward was illegal in college football at that point (the rule changed in 2013). Since there was no instant replay, it was not reviewable. USC got away with highway robbery on back to back plays!
Yeah but you can agree, replay or not that the clock should be stopped because the ball literally gets knocked out of bounds.

Reggie Bush in that period was probably the most impressive athlete I've seen in my lifetime (I'm 40 this year). The difference between his skill and his competition's skill was absolutely breathtaking at times. He looked like his speed boost/agility was on a whole different plane of existence.
As an ASU grad who watched him torch us more than once, I concur.
Second best athlete for me behind Barry. Reggie is the best college player I have ever seen (Mid 30's). Guy was electric running, catching, and returning. The UT-USC natty is still one the best ever played

It was a shame that the NFL really didn't know what to do with Bush. They figured out multipurpose backs eventually in players like Sproles and Westbrook and to some extent CmC, but Bush was too much for them to figure out

None of the Rewinders ever actually mention the thing that happened. They set up the backstory, say the catchphrase, roll the clip, and then cut to the outro. “Show, don’t tell” and such.
I was 4 years old when I watched this game. I didn't know much about USC or football, but my dad was obsessed. He went to USC and loved college football as a result. This game is one of my earliest memories. Thank you for an incredible video giving The Bush Push the justice it deserves.
If I remember correctly there was a huge controversy over this play because in NCAA college football rules players weren't allowed to "push the pile" or push the call carrier for extra yards. Many fans were outraged about the officials giving USC time back on the clock after Matt's fumble out of bounds on the 1 yard line and even more so for not flagging the "Bush Push" play.
How do you not bring up that this play was against the rules then because a player isn’t allowed to push him into the endzone

It's not against the rules. That is a myth that was perpetuated for some reason, but it was a perfectly legal push.
@@agoo7581 No it was illegal. At the time, Section 3, Article 2b of the NCAA rule book stated that, "[t]he runner shall not grasp a teammate; and no other player of his team shall grasp, push, lift or charge into him to assist him in forward progress." The rule was changed in the early 2010s.
@@cooljayhu that and he didn’t mention the question of if the all went forward or sideways out of lienarts hands at the end. I believe if it was backwards the clock should have kept running. Plus on Quinn’s go ahead TD he may have been down at the 1. If replay had reversed and they had to run another play to score changes end of game as well. No replay had a massive effect on the last drive
@@jennlalli5481 my question is why the refs made a call on the field that the game ended, then WITHOUT THE USE OF REPLAY, reverse that call and gave USC the ball back. It’s one thing to go to the booth to overturn the field, but to have the field overturn the field is insane.

If you watch the Trojan War 30 for 30, Leinart talks about the call. It was his choice, he saw the alignment of the defense, consulted Bush and decided to try the sneak.
Then it happened to the Seahawks and with the 49ers game he got a 5 yard penalty and had to pass.
It should be noted that instead of easily becoming the #1 pick by the 49ers in 2005, Leinart decided to return for one last season at USC taking a Ballroom Dancing class. Dropped him all the way down to 10th in 2006.
Had such a weak arm. He was probably the weak point of that entire team which is crazy lmao.
As a diehard ND fan, this is one of the most painful loses I've witnessed. To have been beaten by U$C the way they had leading up to this game(02, 03 and 04) and to play the way they did that day was just awful. Cheering for ND is just torture, especially the Weis/Willingham era's. God, those coaches were awful but I'm hopeful Freeman can continue what Brian Kelly started but take ND to the next level. I’m hoping that once Freeman gets his own recruits in their they’ll be able to win big games again. The biggest problem of the Kelly era was he could never win many big games.

People aren’t understanding that a coach’s first year is rarely ever good when it comes from such a chaotic situation like the Kelly debacle. Freeman will be a good coach who’s players believe in him once it’s truly his team. The teams has his back right now but you can see that he’s still learning to be THE coach for ND. As a Michigan fan I miss the rivalry we had, but I always root for you guys when you aren’t facing us

@@brycelandon6387 Freeman made the mistake of starting Buchner at QB to start the year. That QB sucks and made horrible reads. He’s undefeated with Pyne at QB. USC is still an inferior team to ND and I expect ND to win again this year. USC is the most overrated team in the top 10 am I think they lose this week at Utah.

This game had so much buildup and did not disappoint.
The Instant Replay thing is such an underrated and forgotten piece of this. I remember it so well and I'm glad this video documents it.

The worst: 2008 brickyard 400
Was at a wedding rehersal in Washington DC when this game was going on, my Dad left the dinner to find the closest bar and found the tv playing the SC game about 10 seconds before the Bush Push actually happened. He was so happy he started singing the USC fight song with some other USC alum that happened to be there.
You know what else needs a rewind. Duke vs UNC final four last year. Maybe post it in the March Madness season?
I think it’d be good to wait a couple more years to really let the aftermath of that game set in, especially since so much of it involves Hubert Davis’s rise and Coach K’s retirement. The narrative in hindsight will really depend on how Duke performs with a new coach over the next few years.

Except that would have actually been the smart move in a three point game on second down with 7 seconds left and no timeouts. If Leonard is stopped, the game is over and you lose. If a pass goes incomplete, at least you can run another play, either a second end zone attempt or a game tying fg.

Funny how Pete Carol's call for a rule change for instant replay was his saving grace in this game but not the rose bowl vs Texas.
I'm so glad Texas won that game and the National Championship. They were way more deserving of it than USC.

I remember watching the USC dynasty when I was a young pup. Those were one of the most exciting years of college football I've ever seen. Reggie Bush was a walking highlight reel. Doing things you'd think is only possible in a video game
Winning one championship is not a "dynasty".
Dude, you missed the most important part of the game. That final play was an illegal push and should have been called back. This push led to a rules change and helped paved the way for replays across the NCAA.

I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was in 5th grade and I was a huge SC fan. My first ever crush was a Notre Dame fan, and I remember the monday after this game I was talking so much crap to her. It probably ruined any chance of me ever dating her, but I didn't care. Truly a classic, one that I will never forget.

I was at this game with my mom. I'll never forget it. I was along the wall getting ready to rush the field and then Dwayne Jarrett makes that catch.
We actually got the tickets from a season ticket holder we knew before the season started and the hype for the game was insane. He actually tried to buy back the tickets from us when it became apparent how big a game it would be and when we refused he never gave us tickets again lol.
As someone who only really got into college football in 2015 or so seeing these deep dives are very informative to get up on the history.

I was a junior in high school in Edmond, OK, preparing for our homecoming dance when this game was on. We were all waiting for our dates to get ready, watching the game in my gf’s house in her living room. When the ladies all came out to show off we didn’t even turn our heads because we were transfixed by the drive and the events that led up to the Bush Push. Memories 😂
I've watched alot of these but this is the first one I've seen where I didn't know the ending and it hits WAY DIFFERENT
This was one of the best games I have seen to this day. Notre Dame should have won under the rules of the day. I hated that USC team and as we went on to learn they were no strangers to cheating
Right. In addition to the push itself being illegal under the rules of the day, Leinart's fumble on the previous play saw the ball go out of bounds 2 or 3 yards back without forward progress being stopped. So the spot should've been at the 3 or 4 instead of the 1.
Still though, despite the loss, this is still the most fun I've ever had watching the Irish at my favorite bar.

I was in end zone seats - row 28- watched it live. painful. But what a game! So many close plays went for USC. The IRISH outplayed them all night- or so it felt. I've never watched the game other than live at the "House" that night... and now this clip.
Watching this as huge usc fan in a room full of friends who hated usc i still remember all of us going crazy like 5 different times that final drive haha
It's such a shame Reggie's stats don't officially count anymore, because people forget he was the heart and soul of the USC offense for those teams.

A lot of viewers may not understand why this game was so infamous for the push. At the time, pushing the ball-carrier from behind to gain yards was a penalty. The refs missed that Bush shoved Leinart away from the pile and across the goal line. This was a history changing play that never should have happened, coming off the heels of the refs adding time back on the clock despite no replay, and committed by a team also notorious for breaking so many off the field rules that their season was literally wiped from the books and Bush's trophy was taken away.
I dont know why replay matters, they correctly made the call without replay. The game ending on an out of bounds fumble with 7 seonds left would have been ridiculous
The ball went out of bounds. It was the correct call. USC didn't break any rule neither. They never paid Reggie. I know what you're alluding to. Smh.

I remember watching that game and being so unbelievably furious about it despite having no connection to either school. I just didn't like Pete Carroll, since I thought he was a mediocre coach when he was with the Patriots and his success at USC seemed kind of suspicious.
