    3:38 I'm kind of glad they focused more on the base game's visuals. As impressive ray tracing may look, I'm glad they prioritized the 60 fps, gore and expanded levels instead.

      This game's art direction doesn't seem to need Ray-tracing implementation. Interestingly he mentioned interest for other use cases of Ray-tracing besides reflections, real time lighting and shadows.

    The thing that gets me so excited is how he's not talking up the "amazing game" he's instead ranting about how fantastic the people working on it are that really makes me think that they are trying their hardest to make another great game. It's gonna be GOTY calling it now.

      Witcher 3 is pretty damn janky, not sure what this quality is you speak of.

    I absolutely love id software. They have made some of the best FPS and game technology ever seen. I'm super hyped to get my hands on doom eternal, I'm as excited for the technical side as the game its self

      I love John Carmack, probably the person that is the closest to be an idol for me, but I think it was a good thing he left at some point. He is a bit like a crazy genius and at some point its not very good for a video game company...
      That being said, his influence and legacy still reign supreme and I think thats perfect balance. ID makes better games than ever and the technological part of it is top notch.

      To be fair I believe it's due to their legacy. Imagine you being a programmer who has the same passion for progress and going beyond what was done before. Where would you aspire to work at? ID software who are basically your dreamteam and your entire inspiration of doing what you do or work on new CoD game which was originally made on a modded ID Tech engine? I believe that people go to work for ID to carry on the torch and legacy of all the big names. They most likely grew playing original ID games and now it is their time to go beyond plus ultra. Maybe they will even make a real name for themselves. As in not even as a company but as individuals who worked in a company.
      Videogame market really needs more individual names, be it directors, artists (3d, 2d, animators), composers, programmers and so on and so forth. So far Mick Gordon stands out and imagine if we actually knew the names of people who coded ID Tech 7 and knew that they are out to work on some other project. I'm a fan of ID Tech engine in general, but I was never really bothered enough to find any info on people who worked on the thing. But what if we actually had an opening cutscene with a slide along the lines of "POWERED with ID Tech 7 made by Bob, Billy and Britney". You could see their name on some other game's engine or a piece of software and go like "Oh heck Bob made ID Tech 7, this game is going to look/work so good when it's released!"

      @@slavedemorto Indeed. But few companies are capable of retaining that kind of legacy. It takes time and effort to capture and preserve the knowledge that makes a company distinctive. Apple without Steve Jobs was/is a very different company than Apple with. Nintendo I can see preserving its distinctiveness even without Shigeru Miyamoto, because there's a lot of internal passing on of knowledge to new developers inside Nintendo. And it pleases me to see Id is the same. That is, until it gets fully digested by the ZeniMax sarlacc,

      ​@@bitwize ​ To be fair ZeniMax Online studio is doing stellar job with ESO. I am currently not playing it, but I always want to go back to it and will probably get into it next month. So I can't kinda hate Zenimax all across the board. Though Bethesda is burning garbage at a moment that's just the fact. It may or may not change with ES6.
      I honestly believe that if investors running ZeniMax know at least anything about how to make money they would know that burning down ID Software for a quick cash grab without future prospects would basically destroy Zenimax and it will be bought by some other company when stocks plummet. Currently the only game in the near future (2-5 years) that they can make a bet on is Doom Eternal. Everything else is either dead or dying.
      They won't make their main bet on ESO. The game is good but not a financial success, because WoW and Blizzard are not done killing themselves just yet. When Shadowlands expansion for WoW releases it will be apparent if WoW finally dies, but for now even after a disastrous BFA it still dominates MMO market so banking on that front is too risky. So ZeniMax only option is to nourish ID Software to carry them through several years until the "main crew" of Bethesda delivers. I remind you that Fallout 76 was made by some small division of Bethesda who's only job in last 4 years PRIOR making Fallout 76 was creating TWO ONLINE MAPS FOR DOOM 2016. So once I read who exactly is making Fallout 76 I didn't even care about it and I was correct in the long run. So my theory is that the real project is heavily developed by the main team of Bethesda Montreal.
      But like I said: ZeniMax needs someone to keep them afloat until Bethesda delivers and the only thing there is: would be ID software.

      Not many development studios admit to fan demand and say they are working on it. Whether they actually do or not is another story, but very few come out and say this. The only other one I know that does it quite a lot of recent is Sakurai with Smash Bros.

      But most of the time their ideas are absolutely terrible and shouldn't be listenned to
      A good rule in game dev is that most of your playerbase will actively find ways to not have fun for the sake of efficiency,and that they will not enjoy themselves unless you force them to enjoy themselves

      Doom Eternal will definitely not run well on Switch, the Switch cannot run high fidelity games and no before anyone mentions it, Mario Kart is not a game that requires much power to run, it's not a good example of the Switch running high fidelity games.

      hardware honestly isnt ready. 1200$ gets 1080p60fps? not in anything fast paced. they either need to drop RTX or go harder on it somehow

      @@bradhaines3142 you obviously don't have an RTX card. This was the case when you RTX first got released. Now with my RTX 2060 Super I can get 60 fps on almost any game with RTX on at 1080p.

      Both Necris (from UT3) and Sentinel architectures are inspired by Roman but are made much darker and decayed.
      So yeah they can indeed look quite similar.

      The only thing I've heard along those lines is in the noclip interview with Hugo Martin where he discusses how the game felt a bit boring at one point after they introduced all the new Slayer abilities - which, versus the old enemy AI, removed any challenge because the 2016 version enemies simply couldn't keep up with the player. He also said they solved that problem by speeding up the AI and giving them new abilities to match.

      With the new consoles supporting ray tracing it would be interesting if they used that tech to create a dark and shadowy atmosphere that would be perfect for a Doom 2016 style reboot of Quake.

      @@2yoyoyo1Unplugged Quake 1 had a pretty barebones story but had a good single player campaign featuring 30 levels. Granted I did get the feeling the original Quake was more of a tech showcase at the time and they just shoehorned a story into it.

      @@2yoyoyo1Unplugged Quake and Quake 2 have single player campaign similar to the original Doom -a serie of maps with the simple objective of reaching the exit without dying. They were pretty good for the time. But Quake 2 multiplayer is what made it really popular.
      Quake 3 Arena is a multiplayer only game, but it is also possible to play solo against bots. It is still played today by hardcore fans, but the skill ceiling is rather high and any newbie will get utterly destroyed when matched against veterans, which can be discouraging.

      This is how the head of a development team should be. He has confidence on what he is saying and states specific parts of the project that were doing great or needing more attention. He even shows that he knows what it will appeal the most to the consumer when he said that he liked what Ray-tracing can bring to tee future but what is really important at the moment is getting the base game running perfect (optimized, with great level design, and satisfying gameplay).

      I hope all Bethesda (Publisher) Studios use the engine next gen. Similar to Capcom does with RE Engine.

      Unreal 4 is a much diverse and versatile engine, and you can do anything on it from 2D side-scrollers to giant open world games.
      Id tech 7 is a more specialized engine that only works on certain types of games.

    I don't think Ray-Tracing is ready for prime-time at high frame rates yet. Can't blame the team for not including ray-tracing yet. They would have to sacrifice detail and world size/complexity to bring it to a playable frame rate.

      They also probably started to work onthe engine way before raytracing become a thing, they have benn smart not to force it in, instead they weill probably use it in the next itaration of the engine.

      Every ray traced game runs at 60+ fps at 1080p on the RTX 2060, so I don't really get what you mean when you say "not ready for prime-time".

      @@TexelGuy Which games though? They are usually modifications to old games or low polygon games like Minecraft. Even with a new game engine you are not going to get anywhere near 60 fps with high detail, poly count, and large draw distances on current GPUs.

    I know why I like the look of these games on Switch so much now --- It really reminds me of the feel of playing through Quake 2 for the first time on PC. It has a sort of soft look to the textures like Quake 2 had and the overall feel of corridor battles is kind of like that game too. Makes sense for me to get that similarity sense considering who made Quake 2 back in the day.

      @@theanimerapper6351 The difference being the switch has a 'canon' screen size that cannot be changed, and that's what they're talking about. A PS4 for example can look hugely different based on what kind of an output you're looking at, too big a TV and it won't look as sharp as someone playing on 24 inch monitor, causing highly different experiences.

    3:45 - you can always add ray tracing later. It's shiny, it's new, but honestly I 100% agree that the focus should be on pushing a polished product at launch. Bells and whistles can always come later. These guys do incredible work, so F'n pumped for this game.

      @@DenkyManner Most major console games these days have HDR. If anything, it would have been surprising if there wasn't going to be HDR for the consoles. PC is still up in the air though. Too many devs who assume that only a few people own an HDR monitor and don't implement it, not realising that PC's are easily hooked up to 4K HDR capable TV's.

    What I really respect the most and which has had a clear impact on the success of the franchise and id Software is that Marty seems to have an understanding of the technical work involved and seems to have huge respect for the development team. The fact that he knows what culling is just confirms that. I think this allows for adequate time to be allocated to the development and also allows for proper planning and time management. A manager of any industry should have good base knowledge and understanding of the different departments to ensure staff are motivated and looked after and to ensure the best possible outcome. I always knew id Software would stand the test of time ever since I first played Wolf3D in '92. So many studios have come and gone but id Software has managed to stay relevant and ahead of the curb in the FPS department.

    3:14 I miss this HUD, it looks so much cleaner, less distracting and just more appropriate. The new one reminds me of a mobile game or Quake Champions. At least there will be options to change the color and disable some elements, but i don't know how useful that's gonna be, considering you need to manage your resources here.

      There are tons of options to customize almost every aspect of the HUD. You can't get it back to the Quakecon2018 version, but you can mess with the color, opacity, sizes and toggle various elements.

      If it can run on consoles, your Rx580 will do just fine. Just don't expect to run higher than 1080p or medium settings.

    I like how this man discusses his game. He really brings a new insight instead of hype. He understands his game and he understands what he wants.
    In other video he goes into extreme detail discussing Doom Eternal and the resemblance of Quake 2. This man respects old school and implement it flawlessly in their new iteration of Doom Eternal.
    It makes sense when ID decides to focus on the story. That was their boldest move. ID wants to wrap the story up and increase the lore of their own game instead of being a mindless shooter. This time the game feels strategic, fast paced and of course fast.

      I agree - Mac is not really for games (to be honest).
      Yes - Apple has Metal. Apple want "their own DirectX". The difference is:
      * DirectX is used in Windows with market share about 88% (and in Xbox)
      * Metal is used in Mac with market share about 10% (iOS is much more popular tho)
      And yes - there is a thing called "MoltenVK" which translates Vulkan to Metal (because noone really wants to learn Metal, to be honest).

      You realize that most developers still make games on engines that are at least 15 years old, right? Bethesda’s engine is actually fairly new compared to what most of these other AAA devs use.

      True, Zenimax is the parent for both studios, but Bethesda Game Studios has wrung Creation Engine (Gamebryo) absolutely dry instead of borrowing ids tech. Gods I hope they’re building back end stuff now rather than shoving another Creation Engine game on us.

      @Anne riordon There is no such thing a Switch Pro, that's is just a unfounded rumor with zero proof to back it. Nintendo just release the Switch mini and the new Switch with a better CPU they aren't going to release a Pro version of the Switch just so they can get backlash from people saying they bought the mini and the new CPU Switch for nothing. So I don't expect to see any new Switch's this year.
