Most of my customers are confused and they think the broader market craziness is blown out of proportion or it's a bunch of fake news, things seem normal at the shop and I guess they believe it's the same at other places. It's not, and it's taken a lot of work to keep things running smoothly, and a lot of re-investing back into the shop. Fortunately, when one area of collectibles is suffering, like MTG, others are doing well, like like Silver and Bronze age comics, which are still doing well (but not great). I don't know how shops that haven't diversified into different areas of collectibles are surviving, and that's why many haven't, I guess they're burning through personal savings or borrowing against other assets.
The important thing is that we do not support these companies that do depraved and deplorable things. Buying cards they made 30 years ago does not support them.
@@CrosswaIk The prices that Wizards can charge are based on what the people that will patronize them will pay. If no one woukd patronize them, they couldn't charge anything. Also my understanding is that 30 bombed pretty hard.

Speaking as the person who sold this collection to Rudy a few months back, I can say for certain that Rudy does not pay the percentage he says he pays. He also doesn't give you prices on cards or even a range of price even after you send videos and pictures. The few things he actually gave me a quote on where a couple sealed sets of CE but then Wizards made their announcement while they where in transit and so he didn't honor his price on those. He gets you to ship everything to him and then sends a lowball offer and gets all weird when you simply ask about pricing. I was surprised at how strangely defensive he got when I asked about pricing. He said I was price shopping. I'm like, "dude, I'm not allowed to ask you what you'll pay for something before I ship it to you?!". I was previously a fan of his but he showed his true colors in this transaction. I had a lot more stuff I was planning on sending him but I decided to keep it after getting gouged on the first couple shipments. Believe it or not, these where my cards and this did happen.

I really appreciate all the good insight in these videos. The difference between disasters like Fallen Empires and now is back then WotC fessed up and said my mistake, we need to correct things. This time around, they are doubling down against the player base and even BoA. That arrogance leads to a vastly different environment than we had with missteps in previous years
Honestly, the only thing I don't like about your business is that you prevent the cards in your vault/basements/bathrooms from being played. Another very good argument for printing private proxies.

What are those "collection" cards useful for? They seem to me to be a bunch of unplayable fancy proxies, just __and precisely__ equal to the "30th Anniversary" proxies: rares, but utterly useless. Except for framing them as a family / holiday trip photo. But without the family nor the holiday.
Depending on how casual your commander group is really. A lot of them are welcome to run the collector cards and even other proxies. But that would be a "rule 0" conversation
As one of the 5 ppl left at 27min into the video ... and as one who originally had a crack at MTG in 1994 -> I enjoy seeing these cards on the table - though the gold texture border on the multicolour cards still irritates me. Art-wise, the Power-9 and land cards still hold up beautifully, as well as the trusty Birds of Paradise, which is effectively a land card -> Glad I pulled a hatful of those birds out of DMR boxes! For the general cards, the artwork has generally improved out of sight: Innistrad block, Khans, the Zendikar -> Innistrad blocks after Khans, Ixalan, Eldraine ... they're bl00dy fantastic themed cards!
WoTC said for years they would not do that and it was clearly breaking the spirit of the RL. Then they actually did it with a couple cards and when asked directly Mark Rosewater said they could make better then RL. Complete reversal of a 25 year position. Unhinged Magi made a video about it. Basically, yes you are right. Having said that it's not very likely brcause it would probably still trigger a lawsuit. Just look at the damage MTG 30th caused WoTC! Stock price dropped in half!
They have done this plenty. Compare Dauntless Dourbark to Wood Elemental, for example. There's a LOT of unplayable cards on the reserve list that can easily be up-powered and STILL be unplayable. If Nameless Race lowered its casting cost by 2 and drew you a card, no one would play it. Historically, there hasn't been any outrage from collectors when they have done this. But I don't think that's breaking the reserve list. For a start, even if the Better Lotus you describe was printed, it would have very little impact on Black Lotus' value - the card would still be historically iconic, would still be a status symbol for collectors, would still be played in every single vintage deck.
@@camipco A huge amount of the value of Black Lotus is because it's the best there is for fast mana. If a better then Black Lotus was printed then FOR SURE it's value would be crushed. It will always have values yes, but it would be a fraction of the value had that better card not been printed.

I think what I respect most out of this channel is the up front communication when products are not for you. I am in my mid 20s and have a good sum saved in my first Roth, and have a good amount saved to get my first house, and Rudy looks at guys like me and says this investment is not for me or anyone at this point in life, so keep saving and socking it away. I am staying the course- all sealed MTG draft booster boxes will always have value to my play group. We certainly don't support set booster boxes, collector booster boxes and secret lairs- because we actually enjoy playing the game! As collectors and players we love the chase and the flash and when you remove that element like collectors booster boxes, set booster boxes and secret lairs have you will lose money long term.
Your are mixing different topics, your own preferences and financial analysis. Where is no evidence that collector boxes etc. loose more money then draft boxes long-term, there is simply not enough data out. Your "analysis" then comes mostly from your own interest in the draft format. I don't say that draftability is not a worthy feature, but the other products also have features preferred by other customer segments. I as a commander player don't like the bunch of crap delivered by draft boxes i never use. There will be Commander players out that have a massive interest in "blingabiiity" of products.

There used to be a premium price on a foil sometimes around 5x the value now the difference in price is a couple of bucks on newer sets. Last time I gave a black lotus away it was world of Warcraft they're worth like a hundred gold which is a lot of time for investments and the guy's name was ponzer I instantly traded them because he told me where it was and I immediately was going to trade him it back but he did not accept the lotus so I kept it
Rudy has some very interesting points, but MTG, Pokemon, whatever is still an unregulated market, and anyone is allowed to pump and inflate cards. If someone really wants to talk about investment, and how these cards cant be replaced, which we just saw WOTC attempt to do with Magic 30, then be 100% transparent.
I don't like dividend stocks. They tie up capital which could be used to further grow the company, and also have tax implications. The real gem to me are bluechips that continually do share buybacks, which is like an invisible dividend, and still manage to create shareholder value. You can also get a good position on these and write out some really far OTM calls for additional income. Gonna be sitting really comfy with Walmart this year

I like MTG it is my favorite tcg. you have been very straight forward and i respect it, but your statement of "who are you selling it to" might be more relevant than normal. you are normally right. however this really does look like the end. I really hope you see this so that you take a second look. its not because magic 30. its because of the mentality. I do not believe that people will pay prices for cards if they cannot play them. eBay take 12.9% of everything it collects ….including taxes and shipping plus insertion fee, etc, etc, which means by the time you get your money…. It’s 20-25% of what your price. The call it Fee Bay for a reason

Normal price in FB groups is 65-70% when it's entire collections of mixed condition rather than individual cards.

I really hope you see this so that you take a second look. its not because magic 30. its because of the mentality. I do not believe that people will pay prices for cards if they cannot play them. eBay take 12.9% of everything it collects ….including taxes and shipping plus insertion fee, etc, etc, which means by the time you get your money…. It’s 20-25% of what your price. The call it Fee Bay for a reason
